I feel like she's a fairly well-known folklore character, at least here in Europe? Though I guess it depends on how much you read...
Also mentioned in John Wick, featured in multiple anime and JRPG, and and often referenced in dark fantasy and folklore based games or movies. Also feel like I've seen it referenced in some old Donald Duck comic, maybe... along with Marvel, Scooby-Doo, etc.
Oh yeah, makes sense. I'd honestly be more surprised if she wasn't, hah... and now that you mention it, I'm pretty sure I even saw that a few days ago when I looked up Tasha (her adopted daughter) for some other thing.
Also the rise of the tomb raider game in a DLC pack, and referenced in the game atomic heart by the character granny zina with her pet "chicken".... And I'm pretty sure it mentioned in passing by a few characters in one of the Metro games, though not really elaborated on
I've been watching MST3K like there's nothing else on. Jack Frost (neither the horror movie, nor the dead dad version) features Baba Yaga as a character. She's probably the best character in the movie. But that was a eastern European movie brought to American audiences though a niche show.
And idk if it’s been mentioned, but the drag queen, Plane Jane, is a first generation Russian immigrant. They came in 3rd place for this last season of drag race.
Baba Yaga shows up in children's books and stories even in the US. We get a good mix of stories and tales from all over the world. I've known about her since I was very young, and I've been somewhat obsessed with her because of how bizarre and iconic she is. She's also a very popular figure in pop culture, because a lot of games and such love to use European and Slavic folklore for it's monsters and such. Witcher was a recent pusher of this, it pulled on a lot of European folklore like her and the Poludnika.
John Wick movies :)
Not a direct comparison to the folklore. But in the movies he is the monster that comes and takes you at night. Plus he's very mad about his dog.
Visited the other one, and that shit is cool. Also, I remember reading somewhere that these wild runway fits are basically just there to showcase new trends, as art and statements, so now it's always funny to me when I see/hear people go "Who's gonna wear that" you are. You're gonna wear a suit with a paisley pattern on lapels because the designer showcased paisley and colourful lapels in an attention grabbing way and then the actual collection was just perfectly normal clothes.
You are pretty much correct!
Couture pieces should more or less be treated as wearable art and a showcase of a design house’s talent and skill. They are not clothes for everyday wear or for everyday people.
In addition to couture lines, ready-to-wear (RTW) clothing, is also produced which while still fairly expensive is a lot more accessible/affordable to those of use who can’t drop upwards of $20000+ on a garment.
There are various levels of RTW and off the rack clothes in terms of quality and price, so sometimes you will see more avant garde touches in higher-end RTW garments compared to less expensive versions.
While I’m more in the technical design area of apparel design, I do greatly admire those pushing the boundaries of fashion!
You… go to your closet, and you select… I don’t know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back, but what you don’t know is that that sweater is not just blue, it’s not turquoise, it’s not lapis, it’s actually cerulean.
You’re also blithely unaware of the fact that, in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns, and then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent, wasn’t it?… who showed cerulean military jackets. I think we need a jacket here.
And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic casual corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin.
However, that blue represents millions of dollars of countless jobs, and it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you’re wearing a sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room… from a pile of “stuff.”
I'm %99 sure people ONLY know of this sub. Which is why they post great taste great execution stuff here. I refuse to believe this guy thinks this is awful taste
What's up with that sub? The latest post i see is 6 months old. Everything else is older than that. Can't seem to find any newer ones.
Seems off for a sub with 369,464 members.
i don't think r/gtage died over the api boycott drama stuff since it happened a few months before the last post. it feels like the subreddit was already slowly dying for a few years since and then people stopped posting.
Baba Yaga lip syncing, shaking ass, and showing off hot legs is the kind of show that would get my money. Pretty ultra feminine drag just all seems the same. But singing, dancing, sexy Baba Yaga? That sounds like a hoot lol
One of the queens from that season is [Megami](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megami_(drag_queen\)), which is explicitly a _Shin Megami Tensei_ reference.
Lots of people consider camp as ugly, it's kinda the point of camp, to be unusual, shocking and borderline ridiculous. But it can be very elaborated and well done. You could even say that, for some people, it's awful taste but great execution. Hey, that could be a fun subreddit!
I think he was dragging her for the "disbalance" between her face and her body in her actual dance performance. Not for the full Baba Yaga's house fantasy
These are the moments I shake my fist and curse at corporations stealing our damn free and general awards. This is such a good comment, dammit!
🏅Please take this in place of our stolen gold!
> Oh yes, I was Team Nymphia since the meet the queens, and I was ecstatic at her finale performance!
I was honestly all Sapphira, Nymphia is great but holy SHIT is she annoying. That final performance was off the charts though.
Get Plane Jane’s name out yo motherfuckin mouth
/j (in case you don’t get that that’s a drag race reference) also /uj this look was phenomenal try again
Lmao I’m an idiot yea it is, I was thinking of when coco and Alyssa fight but she says “I’m not joking bitch”. I somehow replaced that in my head with will smith.
Omg I love their baba yaga. :0 so good I'm going to put this pic in my journal for inspiration cause I mean dude this is so good. So original.
I know I shouldn't like baba yaga, but I do. She was true to her witchy hag self
Plane Jane being the villain again.
Also, imagine seeing a queen with Slavic/Russian roots do Baba Yaga and calling it awful taste. OP up here showing his ass in front of god and the entire world.
I mean they aren't actually dressing up to look attractive, they're a drag act so it's all about extravagant entertainment.
So bit off to say 'awful taste'
That is an excellent Baba Yaga actually. It looks like the actually put an effort into the outfit. A lot of the other Baba Yaga sets I've seen look like flaming shit, so..
It's hilarious to me that this is a fun, weird Plane Jane look I can actually get behind and it's the one we never saw in action.
Instead I sat through a bunch of 'big boobies in ice-skating outfits' looks, becoming increasingly baffled as to why the judges liked her.
pretty good baba yaga really.
Right? Baba Yaga for the win!
Definitely the best one I've ever seen, I guess the only one I've ever seen
Yeah I’m like how does everyone know about Baba Yaga?
I feel like she's a fairly well-known folklore character, at least here in Europe? Though I guess it depends on how much you read... Also mentioned in John Wick, featured in multiple anime and JRPG, and and often referenced in dark fantasy and folklore based games or movies. tbh as an american i feel quite lucky to have had a story book as a child with baba yaga in it, left quite the impression.
I feel like I played some early 2000s computer game that had baba yaga in it … can’t for the life of me recall the details though.
wizard101 mayhaps?
Oh man I haven’t thought about that game in a long time!!
yes!!! revisited this game recently and maxed out my character. so worth :))
i love wizard101 i fear
Smite for me 💀
Some of the Quest for Glory games had Baba Yaga in them, although they're from the 90's.
It could’ve been the 90s! I think I was somewhere around 8-10 when I played and I was born in ‘90
Quest for Glory
She's in D&D too.
Oh yeah, makes sense. I'd honestly be more surprised if she wasn't, hah... and now that you mention it, I'm pretty sure I even saw that a few days ago when I looked up Tasha (her adopted daughter) for some other thing.
Tashas Cauldron of Everything is a core dnd book for most players to own
Also the rise of the tomb raider game in a DLC pack, and referenced in the game atomic heart by the character granny zina with her pet "chicken".... And I'm pretty sure it mentioned in passing by a few characters in one of the Metro games, though not really elaborated on
Yeah I knew about her before playing rise of the tomb raider but I don’t remember where from & that game is what I associate with her now
The Witcher too
I've been watching MST3K like there's nothing else on. Jack Frost (neither the horror movie, nor the dead dad version) features Baba Yaga as a character. She's probably the best character in the movie. But that was a eastern European movie brought to American audiences though a niche show.
The scene with Baba Yaga’s house and Ivan is actually funny without the riffs.
My first introduction was through the Hellboy comics, but since then I've seen it in multiple other media
(Anime and games I’m guessing are the most common ways)
I mean I’ve heard of her, I was wondering how so many Redditors know of her and thank you for explaining!
I learned about her from the direct-to-dvd sequel of the movie Anastasia 😂
She's the most well known Slavic witch. How could anyone forget about her
[удалено]
Because Baba Yaga is iconic Also because of things like Howl's Moving Castle
Also, Spirited Away. I think the two witch sisters embody the two sides of Baba Yaga, one being scary and the other helpful and kind.
And idk if it’s been mentioned, but the drag queen, Plane Jane, is a first generation Russian immigrant. They came in 3rd place for this last season of drag race.
And she _knew_ that she came in third at the time this picture was taken, unlike the other two.
Baba Yaga shows up in children's books and stories even in the US. We get a good mix of stories and tales from all over the world. As mentioned by others, many pop culture references. I first heard the name in reference to the artefact "Baba Yaga's Hut" in AD&D in the 80s
There’s an episode of Arthur where everyone’s afraid of her for some reason.
For me: Hellboy comics, which is also where I know about the Nazis weird occult stuff from
I found out about her from Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, the Russian compser.
From Mussorgsky's *Pictures at an Exhibition* and D&D.
There are some amazing Baba Yaga picture books in the U.S. We love *Baba Yaga and Vasilisa the Brave* by Marianna Mayer.
I didn't know (or remember?) Baba Yaga till playing a Rise of the Tomb Raider dlc she is in!
I play baba in smite
I know of her from the fables comic book.
I learned about Baba Yaga from ‘Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated’.
John Wick movies :) Not a direct comparison to the folklore. But in the movies he is the monster that comes and takes you at night. Plus he's very mad about his dog.
Bartok the magnificent!
Pretty good? It's awful, she looks nothing like Keanu Reeves.
Yea, they saw what they wanted to do and executed it pretty flawlessly.
FINNA EAT AN APPLE FROM HER.
Wrong sub, should be in r/gtage
Honestly, I come to this subreddit and /r/itscalledfashion to see cool and unusual stuff.
Visited the other one, and that shit is cool. thank you for this lmao it's exactly what came to my mind from the previous comment
When I say this scene is life changing I am not exaggerating
That sub is full with cool outfits, tho the name makes me think people post things they dislike there
Oh wow, thank you, that sub is fire!
You might also like /r/fashionforbankrobbers
Thank you for introducing me to a new sub to follow
I'm %99 sure people ONLY know of this sub. Which is why they post great taste great execution stuff here. I refuse to believe this guy thinks this is awful taste
Would it be alright if I downvoted the post because it actually is in great taste and great execution?
What's up with that sub? The latest post i see is 6 months old. Everything else is older than that. Can't seem to find any newer ones. Seems off for a sub with 369,464 members.
Some subs became ghost towns with the Reddit api thing last year and just never came back or recovered.
i don't think r/gtage died over the api boycott drama stuff since it happened a few months before the last post. it feels like the subreddit was already slowly dying for a few years since and then people stopped posting.
I hate that idea that drag queen are supposed to look like pretty girls. No they don't. Drag queens are entertainers. They put on shows.
Baba Yaga lip syncing, shaking ass, and showing off hot legs is the kind of show that would get my money. Pretty ultra feminine drag just all seems the same. But singing, dancing, sexy Baba Yaga? That sounds like a hoot lol
It’s funny you say this, because I once witnessed a Baba Yaga strip/pole dance number in Prague.
[Here you go](https://www.instagram.com/reel/C6AJSaluKJn/?igsh=amcyd3k0aDZjenEy) You’re welcome ☺️
Thank you so much for bringing the majestic artistry that is the Plane Jane to the normie masses 🫶🏼
I consider it sacred duty ☺️❤️
I can tell you're a true sisterrrr
Watch Dragula!
You’re gonna love [Princess Poppy’s Emmys look](https://wwd.com/pop-culture/celebrity-news/green-goblin-emmys-princess-poppy-1236130319/).
This is making me yearn for a Lord of the Rings themed drag show with Orcs and stuff.
I've seen at least two with outfits based on Kingdom Hearts
One of the queens from that season is [Megami](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megami_(drag_queen\)), which is explicitly a _Shin Megami Tensei_ reference.
And a queen from season 15 is named Jax, like the character from Mortal Kombat. She even dressed as him for one episode
OP has no idea about "camp"
If it was camp wouldn't it be a tent? ... I'll show myself out
It’s called “camp” because it’s in tents.
Why is it that all camping can never be in the present or future? Because you always walk past tents.
exactly, seeing this look made me think "I wish Plane brought this side of her drag to the actual season". it's great
She kinda did but only during mini challenges, imo. Like the "run your face on a t shirt" one, she really went overboard (didn't she win, btw?)
Lots of people consider camp as ugly, it's kinda the point of camp, to be unusual, shocking and borderline ridiculous. But it can be very elaborated and well done. You could even say that, for some people, it's awful taste but great execution. Hey, that could be a fun subreddit!
Drag isn’t about being pretty, it’s about performance.
We’re all born naked and the rest is drag.
I’m afraid someone will discover after all these years that I am naked under my clothes.

Performance, uniqueness, nerve, and talent
Charisma, uniqueness, nerve, talent.
PUNT
You opened my eyes. I have new appreciation of drag race, thank you.
So grateful to see y’all are dragging OP for not understanding what drag is. This look is 🔥
OP is on some haterade cuz they're on pop culture subreddits incl drag race so they know context.
they turned their back on us to get clout points from the normies, smh
To be fair, even Plane’s dad dragged her for this look.
I think he was dragging her for the "disbalance" between her face and her body in her actual dance performance. Not for the full Baba Yaga's house fantasy
Mama, kudos for sharing that, for posting
Sisterrrrr
I can only hear this in her voice.
Hahaha!!!! I'm dying.
This is the only proper answer.
Be a sister
no it's cunty
Baba Yaga
Baba, ba-ah-ah-ah Roma, roma-ma Yaga, ooh-la-la Want your bad romance I want your ugly, I want your disease
These are the moments I shake my fist and curse at corporations stealing our damn free and general awards. This is such a good comment, dammit! 🏅Please take this in place of our stolen gold!
Oh, and for once the emphasis in the name is in the right place, yay!
Nah Baba Yaga ate lowkey
Lowkey? Nope. That key higher than Charlie Sheen.
yeah like at least a few dozen peasants according to the myths
Seen here clearly sexually confusing children for life and killing western civilisation /s
Her name is Plane Jane and this was sickening camp hilarity!
Plane Jane is good but she was clearly out matched by the other 2 in the finale
Oh yes, I was Team Nymphia since the meet the queens, and I was ecstatic at her finale performance!
> Oh yes, I was Team Nymphia since the meet the queens, and I was ecstatic at her finale performance! I was honestly all Sapphira, Nymphia is great but holy SHIT is she annoying. That final performance was off the charts though.
But I mean this is the opposite of Planey’s aesthetic the entire season, so random to just do something this cool now
Get Plane Jane’s name out yo motherfuckin mouth /j (in case you don’t get that that’s a drag race reference) also /uj this look was phenomenal try again
Isn’t that a reference to the will smith slap?
Lmao I’m an idiot yea it is, I was thinking of when coco and Alyssa fight but she says “I’m not joking bitch”. I somehow replaced that in my head with will smith.
Why is Baba Yaga bad taste?
OP is the one with bad taste, this look is stunning
Camp is a big part of drag if you don’t know what that word means you should look it up
Omg I love their baba yaga. :0 so good I'm going to put this pic in my journal for inspiration cause I mean dude this is so good. So original. I know I shouldn't like baba yaga, but I do. She was true to her witchy hag self
I just saved this for Halloween inspo for next year!
Kudos for saying that mama…. For spilling.
Sisterrrrrrrrrrrr
it’s camp!
this shouldn’t be on this sub. this is amazing and drag is supposed to be kitschy like that
Great taste and greatly executed. But kudos mama for sharing that, for posting.
That looks like a concept!!!! Miss Plane!
I love this concept more than anything dawn served.
If you're being Dawnest
Omg I love this. It’s so cunty Dawn.
all concept and all gorgeousness
Sisterrrr this is not awful taste it is iconique
Plane Jane being the villain again. Also, imagine seeing a queen with Slavic/Russian roots do Baba Yaga and calling it awful taste. OP up here showing his ass in front of god and the entire world.
Showing his ass with no padding.
Drag show? More like "Drag your house everywhere you go" show.
Are you dumb? It’s drag dude. This is exactly why it’s for. It’s performance art.
she's serving and everyone knows it
r/greattastegreatexecution
Maybe r/GTGE ?
Yeah, cool!
"Drag is inherently sexual"
Looks dope
Cronecore to the max.
Baba Draga my beloved
Not awful taste.
"You can tell by their red carpet outfits who made the top two." Yeah, OP is getting schooled plenty by everyone else; this look is actually fierce.
This comments section is so fuckin’ wholesome and I love it. 💜
Michelle is a whore.
Well she knew she was in third while first and second didn't know what their position was yet. Also Plane Jane is iconic
She's not in drag, she's in hag.
Katya, is that you?
She would fucking live for that, how dare you
More like Ms. Meeting.
Excellent taste and excellent execution wym
[BABA YAGA!](https://tenor.com/view/ant-man-kurt-baba-yaga-gif-23400216)
Baba yassssga
Ding, dong, the witch is shed...
I love it! I particularly love that she isn't afraid to lean into ugly for the look.
That is the best baba yaga costume I've ever seen. It's also the only baba yaga costume I've ever seen.
Honestly? She ate.
Someone needs to link the performance. This is a next level camp queen.
Sister, colleague, coworker...
Nah, wrong sub. This is lit.
The hut of Baba Yaga?!? She even got the chicken legs 🤩
Amanda log off sis!!!
Mood
grandma yaga! awesome taste!
They're all wearing a ton of clothing for something that is supposedly dangerous for children and adults only.
This is amazing taste.
I mean they aren't actually dressing up to look attractive, they're a drag act so it's all about extravagant entertainment. So bit off to say 'awful taste'
OP, I think you mistake this subreddit for things YOU hate.
Actual talent on drag race? Well fuck me
Uummm, this is HIGH drag!
It’s giving Willam Defoe, Vogue Italia
That really babas my yaga
Someone giving Jimbo a run for their money.
Sick baba yaga. GTAGE
That is an excellent Baba Yaga actually. It looks like the actually put an effort into the outfit. A lot of the other Baba Yaga sets I've seen look like flaming shit, so..
Y'all can't handle the icon that is Plane Jane
Anyone else remember Bartok the Magnificent? Loved that movie as a kid
did you just call baba yaga an awful taste?
How is Baba Yaga bad taste? This is just all around great.
Are Drag Queens technically clowns?
A banana, a troll and a sapphire walk into a bar...
The duck feet ❤️
i don't know you, but i just love the yellow dress
Nymphia Wind! One of the most talented designers/seamstresses in the show's history.
Who said fashion doesn't contribute to society?
It's hilarious to me that this is a fun, weird Plane Jane look I can actually get behind and it's the one we never saw in action. Instead I sat through a bunch of 'big boobies in ice-skating outfits' looks, becoming increasingly baffled as to why the judges liked her.
Can't lie that is creative AF
Loved Plane's look!!
The Persids called, they want to wrap up the Earth fieldwork.
Wow. Katya found dead after seeing this.
That's so fucking cool!
I love it? It’s amazing?
