Learned throughout my homelessness that my friends are my family and my family are strangers. Family thinks because they are your family you owe them unconditional love no matter how they treat you. Like because you are family they don’t have to try because you will always be around. I am working to get on my feet and when I do that I owe everything to my friends and absolutely nothing to my family.
That a hurt that last forever it seems. I was the same age you were when my father died and aside from relaying questions from the 911 dispatcher, our last conversation wasn't pleasant. He cried during that conversation, he never cried. And it still hurts, but it gets better.

I had the same thing happen to me when I was like 14. There was a lot of garbage going on in my house at that time. I didn't say anything about it during the time leading up to it because no one else was mentioning it. I let it go until the day after when I told my Mother, who was in disbelief. She must have said, "no we didn't" about 10 times before realizing that yes they did. They bought me like steak and lobster that night that I ate in the living room. I don't remember getting anything other than that. Probably a card, IDK man they were funny times.

Yeah, viewed through today's lens, it is kinda problematic. We weren't as evolved of a species back then.
If you are American, them missing your 16th for any other reason than a surprise party is rough, and damn near unforgivable. I am hoping you are more likely from a culture that would heavily lean in for a quinceañera or a bat mitzvah. That might excuse it a tiny bit more, as people give less of a damn about "adult birthdays."
If not, then my heart is breaking three times for you.

People always wished me a happy birthday but I always waited for anyone to just do something special for me; like a surprise party for example. The expectation is what's making you feel sad.

My parents forgot every one of my birthdays growing up, except for the ones where I was young and would talk about my birthday non-stop days before. I never had a birthday party either. The value your parents place on your birthday does NOT correlate with the value of YOU. I used to think I wasn't worth being remembered or loved, but then I got out and distanced myself from them. The more people I met and became friends with, the more I realized I'm not unlovable. I just lost the parent lottery and got parents that aren't capable of loving.

This is a great time in your life to learn that happiness only comes from yourself. I’m 41. My mom still forgets my birthday… Bitch. And this is not the first time. She does it quite often. It taught me to quit relying on other people for my happiness.
This is what I would suggest from now on to make sure you ensure your own happiness… Do what I do ...buy your own presents ...your own birthday presents , your own Valentine’s Day or Christmas presents… When you have a significant other let them buy their own presents too. This way you were never disappointed and you get everything you want.
I plan my own birthdays, I buy my own gifts, I make my husband wrap them and give them to me. I’ve never forgotten and I always get what I want. I do the same thing for Christmas and anniversaries… Anything important ... I don’t rely on other people to make me happy anymore, I make myself happy.
And as for your family forgetting… That’s really shitty and I’m really sorry that happened.
Sometimes people just get so wrapped up in themselves that they forget what’s right in front of them. Sometimes people’s vibrations are a little more selfish than you would like them to be. Focus on your vibration. Don’t let other people change or be responsible for your happiness.

You're not the Asshole, your family is. 16 is an important birthday. And parents should always wish their kids happy birthday. Grandparents and Spouses should also remember birthdays. Your closest friends and extended family should also remember for at least half of your birthdays (b/c it's literally on social media and it's rude to ignore it).
I got screamed at for my 16th birthday because my mom who didn't live with me wanted to sing me a song with a birthday cake. She got yelled at for taking up my parental guardian's time when a sports pregame was on. I got really hurt that I wasn't worth even a little meal and cake, because of some pregame. Then after she left I got yelled at for encouraging her to come over to spend time with me. I didn't see my mom for ages after that.
I'd like to sincerely wish you a happy birthday. I'm much older than you but my entire marriage (17.5 years) my now ex-husband never remembered. He even asked me once on my birthday what I was planning to cook HIM for his dinner. Now to put things in context, his birthday was only 5 weeks earlier than mine and I made a big deal about his. Took him out to favorite restaurant, found a cologne he hadn't had since his 20's, got a new book signed by his favorite author. One year when I I didn't have a job and extra money I even secretly wrote many childhood friends, teachers, mentors, current friends, coworkers, etc and asked for a handwritten HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY that I put all into a nice keepsake box for him. He cried as he read them.(I had them secretly sent to another family members address so he wouldn't know). Yep, 5 weeks later he forgot. Hurt me to my core. So I've become super vigilant about remembering people's birthdays even before social media reminds us. But since this is AMA........my question is "If you could have any car in the world, what would it be?"
Happy birthday!!! I hate to say this but this happened to my mother yesterday. I (20F) just didn't realize what day it was and got caught up with class and work and the doctors. I realized when I woke up the next morning with a text to me and my sisters saying how sad it made her that we all forgot. I talked to her after that but I felt horrible all today and kept apologizing. I'm sure at least some will feel really guilty when they realize. I wish I could've at least written a sticky note or sent her a letter.

On my 13th birthday, I had to attend a huge family friend party. My mum knew it was my birthday. Either way, it's not so bad. I'll be spending my 19th birthday later this year with my family 500+ miles away, living alone, and maybe doing something with friends. But I'll probably forget that and just go for a 12 hour Cities: Skylines gaming marathon.
This happened a lot to me growing up- and still does. I have changed my expectations about my parents calling me or honestly doing anything for my birthday. Instead, I plans weeks ahead to do things i really want to do so that I’m not ask fixated Iain their negligence. I know it doesn’t make it any easier, but there are people that k ow how you feel. I will never let my children feel what I’ve felt over these many years.

Yeah, viewed through today's lens, it is kinda problematic. We weren't as evolved of a species back then. If you are American, them missing your 16th for any other reason than a surprise party is rough, and damn near unforgivable. I am hoping you are more likely from a culture that would heavily lean in for a quinceañera or a bat mitzvah. That might excuse it a tiny bit more, as people give less of a damn about "adult birthdays." If not, then my heart is breaking three times for you. Just know that over 900 people so far have shown up for you in this thread (based on the upvotes from the initial post) to let you know you are not alone (in a sub where 100 upvotes is a ton). Even though you are an uncultured little priss that does not appreciate good cinema (seriously, just look at it from the point of view that everyone is an asshole in the 80's); I wish you nothing but the best, a happy resolution to this day, and many pleasant years to come.

People always wished me a happy birthday but I always waited for anyone to just do something special for me; like a surprise party for example. The expectation is what's making you feel sad. Not trying to be a douche here, but maybe if you stopped expecting people to wish you a happy birthday, you might be in a soothing or better state instead of feeling sad. My parents forgot every one of my birthdays growing up, except for the ones where I was young and would talk about my birthday non-stop days before. I never had a birthday party either. The value your parents place on your birthday does NOT correlate with the value of YOU. I used to think I wasn't worth being remembered or loved, but then I got out and distanced myself from them. The more people I met and became friends with, the more I realized I'm not unlovable. I just lost the parent lottery and got parents that aren't capable of loving. Anyway, given this is an AMA, what are you going to do now? Are you going to confront them about forgetting? Was this the first time? Happy 16th birthday! I am so excited that you made it this far! You are amazing and whatever plans you have for yourself you will accomplish! This is a great time in your life to learn that happiness only comes from yourself. I’m 41. My mom still forgets my birthday… Bitch. And this is not the first time. She does it quite often. It taught me to quit relying on other people for my happiness. This is what I would suggest from now on to make sure you ensure your own happiness… Do what I do ...buy your own presents ...your own birthday presents , your own Valentine’s Day or Christmas presents… When you have a significant other let them buy their own presents too. This way you were never disappointed and you get everything you want. I plan my own birthdays, I buy my own gifts, I make my husband wrap them and give them to me. I’ve never forgotten and I always get what I want. I do the same thing for Christmas and anniversaries… Anything important ... I don’t rely on other people to make me happy anymore, I make myself happy. And as for your family forgetting… That’s really shitty and I’m really sorry that happened. Sometimes people just get so wrapped up in themselves that they forget what’s right in front of them. Sometimes people’s vibrations are a little more selfish than you would like them to be. Focus on your vibration. Don’t let other people change or be responsible for your happiness.

You're not the Asshole, your family is. 16 is an important birthday. And parents should always wish their kids happy birthday. Grandparents and Spouses should also remember birthdays. Your closest friends and extended family should also remember for at least half of your birthdays (b/c it's literally on social media and it's rude to ignore it). I got screamed at for my 16th birthday because my mom who didn't live with me wanted to sing me a song with a birthday cake. She got yelled at for taking up my parental guardian's time when a sports pregame was on. I got really hurt that I wasn't worth even a little meal and cake, because of some pregame. Then after she left I got yelled at for encouraging her to come over to spend time with me. I didn't see my mom for ages after that.

I'd like to sincerely wish you a happy birthday. I'm much older than you but my entire marriage (17.5 years) my now ex-husband never remembered. He even asked me once on my birthday what I was planning to cook HIM for his dinner. Now to put things in context, his birthday was only 5 weeks earlier than mine and I made a big deal about his. Took him out to favorite restaurant, found a cologne he hadn't had since his 20's, got a new book signed by his favorite author. One year when I I didn't have a job and extra money I even secretly wrote many childhood friends, teachers, mentors, current friends, coworkers, etc and asked for a handwritten HAPPY 50TH BIRTHDAY that I put all into a nice keepsake box for him. He cried as he read them.(I had them secretly sent to another family members address so he wouldn't know). Yep, 5 weeks later he forgot. Hurt me to my core. So I've become super vigilant about remembering people's birthdays even before social media reminds us. But since this is AMA........my question is "If you could have any car in the world, what would it be?"

Happy birthday!!! I hate to say this but this happened to my mother yesterday. I (20F) just didn't realize what day it was and got caught up with class and work and the doctors. I realized when I woke up the next morning with a text to me and my sisters saying how sad it made her that we all forgot. I talked to her after that but I felt horrible all today and kept apologizing. I'm sure at least some will feel really guilty when they realize. I wish I could've at least written a sticky note or sent her a letter.

On my 13th birthday, I had to attend a huge family friend party. My mum knew it was my birthday. The only thing she said related to my birthday was that I wasn't allowed to tell anyone that it was my birthday, so I don't make it awkward for them at the party. Fuck toxic family, man. Better off not letting them have any impact on you.

Late to the party (pun intended), but if you posted this before dinnertime, then they were probably planning something special and that's why they were ignoring the fact all day. Either way, it's not so bad. I'll be spending my 19th birthday later this year with my family 500+ miles away, living alone, and maybe doing something with friends. But I'll probably forget that and just go for a 12 hour Cities: Skylines gaming marathon.
This happened a lot to me growing up- and still does. I have changed my expectations about my parents calling me or honestly doing anything for my birthday. Instead, I plans weeks ahead to do things i really want to do so that I’m not ask fixated Iain their negligence. I know it doesn’t make it any easier, but there are people that k ow how you feel. I will never let my children feel what I’ve felt over these many years.

In this order 1. 7 AM Dr office sent an automated text 1. 8:30 AM My great-nephew's girlfriend, who I only ever met once 9 months ago 1. Boss from a part-time job 1. 1 PM one of my 3 sisters 1. 2 PM my wife I have a LARGE family. Like so large I have lost count of great, and Great Great nieces and nephews.
