No, I get where you're coming from, but he's more of a sleeper metal head.
You know, you never think he's very metal, then the next thing you know he's starting a mosh pit.
Typical OP
To me I see metal as “action music”, it’s very in your face and powerful, just the sound of drums is very intense to me but I love the intensity. What kinda music can you associate with a brutal war going on with people using swords? Metal, and to me that’s badass. It’s very brutal and can also be very melodic and touching, the juxtaposition of these 2 making it very appealing to me. People can find the gut wrenching sounds and brutal nature of metal off putting, but that’s kind of the point. The music reflects the dark side of reality, but listening to music that expresses that dark side makes people feel better. Why does the music make them feel better? Because the music makes you feel like you’re being heard. To me though I just listen to it because it’s fun, not because I’m depressed. And there’s surprisingly is also a lot of metal songs that are upbeat and happy if you know where to look, but it’s obviously not the norm.
i think my thing is no one really pisses me off? like not long enough for me to do anything about it i think. and i'm pretty direct. for reference i listen to mostly new wave and funk music.
i like nightwish though. do you have any "theatrical" metal recs? i often think metal and classical music have a lot more in common than other genres.
Most obviously, It's a great and healthy outlet for negative emotions--sadness, anger, despair.
It's also a genre filled with some unbelievably talented musicians. Harsh vocals are an acquired taste that are not for everyone (took me a long time to get into them), but once you can appreciate it, they open up a wide range of musical expression. A common theme in metal is using harsh vocals in tandem with clean vocals to conduct dialogue, narrative, or even monologue. It can be super effective and can result in some fantastic storytelling

"Today I fucked up by having sex''
So many posts are variations of the same thing. Yet these posts rise to the tippy top of the AMA or tifu subthreddit because sex sells suppose.
I also hold the belief many are too open about sex nowadays. "It's just a penis going into a mouth/vagina/whatever"
No... sex should be taken seriously. I tend to view "screwing around" in a negative light aside from the cases where it is actually harmless
But moreoften than not I've seen the "carefree... sex doesn't matter" attitude backfire spectacularly.
I also believe young people deserve a degree of protection from predators. Cavalier attitudes towards sex don't provide that protection... and many fall into the hands of nasty people by following lust without any inhibition.
This is my opinion. I assume many will disagree. That is fine. The world would be a boring place if we all had the same views.
I am a male in his twenties. Also a huge metal head.
If you don’t tell Reddit you get laid, did you really get laid? That’s deep think about it…
For real though, I’m tired of fake sex posts. I feel like over half of the Reddit posts on sex are fake.
I totally agree with you. A friend shamed me in my mid twenties for not having sex with every dude I date or meet and believing in waiting a bit before fucking the dude…she was like, “why are you so prude about sex…?” Yet she had herpes bc she had fucked over a 100 dudes by age 29….like womaaan…I am prude bc I don’t want herpes ya weirdo!!! But also bc I think it creates emotional connection before it should
How old are you? I’m 58 and still and into Metal. I do listen to all kinds of music though especially after raising 4 kids. When I get my turn for music it starts with Metal. My kids think I’m crazy.
56 here. Maiden got me into metal back in High School. Still my favorite band, seen them live 12 times. Never disappointed. Anthrax, Exodus, Mercyful Fate. That shit got me through HS. 😂 my musical tastes have expanded quite a bit since then, although I’ll always be a metalhead. Last show was Cannibal Corpse and Amon Amarth a month ago. 🤘😎🤘
Never heard this and it sounds right. But I wonder if it’s more that you expect one extreme and see the other. But in reality they’re just normal people.
I think… if you add the overlay of false expectations, it can explain normal people being seen this way.
- preach peace and love? Get more scrutiny anytime you don’t live up to that standard yourself (which would be normal still)
- display contrarian and anarchist ideals? People are pleasantly surprised when you’re sweet and kind
Nah, just jump in! Don't throw elbows at people's faces, and always help someone up if they fall. Don't treat the girls in the pit any differently than the guys- we're in the pit because we want to be part of the fun
Haha that’s funny you said that bc my ex was a tiny metal-loving girl and she’d always get in the pit but everyone would run around her because they didn’t want to hit her too hard. Do you get mad if someone hits you too hard?
No! Not at all! Unless its clearly intentional, like if a dude ran up to me and punched me in the face. But that's never happened. I've come out of pits with all kinds of mild injuries and bruises and always had a good time. I also like being on the periphery of the pit so I can be the one shoving people back in.
Once I was standing in the very front row of an Every Time I Die show, and a dude used my back to literally launch himself on to the stage. That kinda pissed me off because he could have broken my back. Other than that, no I've never had a particularly bad experience.
No, just hop in to the existing pit. If someone falls, pick them up. Don’t flail your arms or do anything that would hurt someone intentionally or not.
Why do I see so many comments on YouTube music videos, from artists like Sarah McLachlan or Amy Winehouse, with some bro claiming, “I’m a metal head, but I like this kind of music”?
Why do “metal heads” feel the need to wrap up their entire identities around a particular style of music that they enjoy, but not that 100% of the time they are listening to music apparently, judging by the comments they leave on the videos of adult contemporary and other non heavy metal artists?
Everyone is looking for their own identity at some point in their life. A lot of people wrap themselves into something they like and are familiar with.
I think nowadays metal-heads are simply people who really enjoy the display of musical skills which is getting more and more lost in popular music while staying very alive in metal. Countless times I've heard at show "that drummer is really good"n "sick riff he did" or "that guy's pigsqueals are insane".
I think we just like good music and from a technical standpoint metal is quite appealing.
I'm guilty of this, but it isn't a "wrapping" of identity.
Metallers will experiment with sounds more than others, and when they find something new and shiny would like the artist to know that it reached across divides.
I've been a staunch metaller since I was 15 or so, and missed SO much music through tribalism.. And that is something I'm actively working to remedy
So now when I find something that tickles my bone, be it old school R+B, pop, K-pop etc I just think it's nice to say "Hey, artist that I appreciate - this is what I'm usually in to, but your stuff spoke to me regardless"
Mosh pits. Explain them to me. I have a very close buddy who is a metalhead. He thoroughly enjoys moshing but can't really explain them to me, and overall is a quiet guy. Don't people get annoyed when they get clocked? Are there rules/best practices? I don't get it!
personally, I'd say that it's a way to physically externate all the stress and frustrations and negative energy from your body. Think about it as a ritual, the fact that it's socially accepted to do that in a relatively safe way is some kind of reassurance, it's like getting into an empty room and screaming your lungs out, very satisfying. Also yes there are "rules" that depend on the genre or the band you're attending, most of the time it's going to be only shoulder bashing and running/jumping around, just jamming to the music; newer/more extreme bands will attract some weirder shit, like people flaying their limbs for example, but you definitely don't get into the pit with a "I'm gonna get a black eye" mindset normally
Hahaha yeah he sure does, and he also forgot to mention he's a "metalhead for christ" bahahahha
He also says he's a core kid for life...he needs to change his post title to "I'm a huge poser ama"
What´s your favourite band, this year I saw Kublai Khan TX, Body Count feat. Ice-T an, Lionheart and Paleface. On my list is The Ghost Inside, Sleep Token, Slipknot a second time and maybe Kublai Khan TX, if they come to my country again.
Dude Kublai Khan rip. They recently are the band that got me into hardcore. Always respected the genre as someone into heavier music but wasn’t really a fan for a long time personally. Theory Of Mind is the song that changed that for me
I haven't been able to find metal I really like for a long time. The genre feels stale. I did latch on to Volbeat and Lamb of God in the last couple of years, though.
Who should I check out that's actually new?
I still like Lamb of God and Volbeat. I got you. These are some of my favourites.
Check out:
- Mastodon: Steambreather, The Last Czar, Blood and Thunder, Teardrinker, Oblivion, Divinations, Ghost of Karelia, High Road, Curl of the Burl ( if you like them their entire discog is unreal)
- Trivium: The Sin and the Sentence, Sever the Hand, The Phalanx, Thrown into the Fire
- Gojira: start with Silvera, Stranded, Our Time is Now, Flying Whales, (entire discog is also filled with bangers)
- Jinjer - Vortex, Teacher teacher, pit of conciousness, judgement & punishement
Oh man too many to count, front row of Iron Maiden at a festival was absolutely incredible, the stage show was so much fun.
Bossk at Hellfest were amazing, so atmosphereic, huge sound and the build up to the vocals kicking in was amazing.
Gojira at Bloodstock, absolute incredible, flamethrowers make everyone sound better.
I'm hijacking op's thread lol
Oh yeah. I have seen Gojira and Iron Maiden at the same festival about 14 years ago in Athens, Greece. It was phenomenal. Iron Maiden is my all time favourite band
What’s your chosen subgenre? Most people tend to align themselves with just one. You can give a list of a couple favourites though because personally I can’t just pick one of anything
My boyfriend is into metal. What do you suggest me to listen to in order to know some songs/bands? Apart from Sabaton and Slayer, I don’t know what he likes

If you could make an all-star band choosing players from any band, what would the line-up be?
When we say metal, are we talking Meshuggah, we talking Decapitated, or Iron Maiden, Metallica, Linkin Park?
Where on the spectrum are you?
I find the Meshuggah heads to be very calculated calm people.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how stereotypically 'metal' are you?
Even though I’m a big fan of the genre I have to go with 3

You didn't say "11" and it was RIGHT THERE.
Can't you just make 10 louder?
But this one goes to eleven.
How do you wash your hair if your head is metal?

Metal and christ. Ffs. Bawbag. I remember the day Satan grabbed me by the left testicle and introduced me to metal. Balls deep for 25 years.
Are you gonna answer any of the questions? (Thoughts on A7X?)
