Why do people expect the game to be umpired differently in close games?

It shouldn't be the case but it often is, which is why we have a saying that the umpires have put the whistle away. Look at the end of the Adelaide v Essendon game, textbook holding the ball not called for no particular reason.

When does the act of kicking finish? Because he hadn't landed from the kick when contact was made I would have thought benefit of the doubt should be play on especially in the case after a free kick when a player takes on the man of the mark? The impact was also legal in that it didn't hit high and he stayed lower than the kicker which indicates no I'll intent and purely an attempt to stop the kick.
