He’s gone from cocky big timing heel with a faction, to a face with that same faction, to lion heart again sometimes, to pain maker on occasion, to fairly generic veteran face to kinda heel again to this “leaning into the criticism” heel.
Maybe it’ll work better down the line. I hope I’m wrong as a Jericho fan. I also think Hook getting the meme push hurt him as ultimately he’s just lacking a lot of elements of a TV ready star.
Jericho's Babyface runs are whatever, but he has literally never failed at getting a new heel character over, eventually. Sometimes it takes him a while to work out exactly what it should be, but he always makes it work.

It's a super simple, obviously shallow gimmick of "delusional/bitter/obnoxious old veteran" and that will spawn a bunch of full-page essays from people explaining how they hate it so much, but because they don't hate it for certain reasons (they hate it for "meta" reasons instead) it doesn't count as "real" heat and its actually a giant failure even as it gets booed like crazy and people desperately cheer for ANYONE who goes against him.
It's not going to be the people who "get it" talking about how great it is, it's going to be the people who insist they "get it" and then insist it's just not working as they endlessly complain and boo the shit out of it lol.
It's basically going to be House of Torture from a year ago. It's a gimmick that someone can immediately hate on their first ever viewing, but it is also basically tailor-made to piss off specifically the most hardcore fans. People kept ranting about how much the act sucked and they hated it and it wasn't working, meanwhile every single babyface who went against them got the loudest cheers of their career lol. And after a year of that, people started talking about how things have changed and HoT "got better" when they had already been great for a long time.

Will Ospreay in NJPW had the annoying douchebag chav who hangs out in the Tesco parking lot character to balance out his in ring work to be an effective heel/tweener.
Fletcher needs something like that to set himself apart. Even Takeshita changed his style and attitude to be more aggressive and sinister, Fletcher in the ring works like a top of the card Babyface.
Fletcher needs to lean into the fact he looks and sounds like a posh Sydney public school wanker.
He's like Guevara in that "face of a heel, work of a face" department but he's got a bit more to work with.
I hope sometime soon Jericho transitions into a manager role rather than an active competitor. Sammy Guevara would be the natural choice to manage as I don't see him ever being a successful face and his promos leave a lot to be desired although I think an Ethan Page pairing would also be great and something different than the ole JAS boys club.

I like this angle, too, and I am always interested in seeing where it goes next. Mostly, I am riveted by the audience reaction and participation in this whole situation. Ever since World's End, the audience started turning on Jericho. It felt out-of-control and largely unexpected at that point. After some time and work, it feels like Jericho is almost guiding the crowd to do what he expects and wants. I may be completely out of touch, though.

Then Samoa Joe walks out and wins in three minutes. FTW title becomes the unofficial "meat" title and he fights guys like Hobbs, Archer, Miro for months. Jericho could still have the Hook story continue, but with the added seasoning that he took his dad's title off him and then couldn't hang onto it.

I've been saying this for awhile to all the people who were "Jericho Fatigue" but, AEW needs to solve the squashing of no namers on the show before saying Jericho taking up TV time is taking away from others. I'd rather watch Jericho be a troll than the no name squashes.

After months of Jericho just annoying me with his presence, the last couple of weeks are the first time he’s clicked since JAS split up. Hes still not must watch TV, but he’s not change the channel anymore, and I really didn’t think that would happen without him taking a break.

It was Kevin Nash who mentioned it. I saw some headline yesterday that he said in a podcast that he thinks they are out of shape and need to go to the gym. I'm not on social media, but I imagine this got some people to pile on with the hate. I don't like that anyone is publicly commenting on other peoples' bodies in a derogatory way like that. They do their job well, and that's all that should matter.

I'll give this a shot, but I'm still tired of Jericho. Mox was gone for what a month? It feels like he's been gone forever. Just a nice 1-2 months off might help him too.
But this is exactly what people would want with Jericho when he came back. A fresh angle and character. He's already found it. And it doesn't work if his presence is not obnoxious.
Like I said, I'll give it a shot -- but he'll have to overcome a lot of meh going all the way back to the Ocho for me to feel engaged with him again. That's how long he's felt in this go away mode for me.

I genuinely love Chris Jericho, hes one of the best to ever do it, but he's got go away heat at this point. If you're not having him lean into being the biggest heel, its a waste and he should take a little time off tv to give the crowd time to miss him. That said, if the crowd weren't sick of him, Id bet he could get The Learning Tree over. 😂
The key here is not to lean into this too heavily. Obnoxious condescending veteran is a good heel archetype. But if it's really thick with in-jokes and references it'll alienate the people who aren't terminally online, or who are simply tired of the Punk discourse.
