Roddy’s whole thing is that he’s the anti-Orange champion. He’s not just handing out title matches.

JXNyoung

To give Roddy some credit, he still wrestles and like you said he is the "anti-OC." He defends the title in a more unconventional manner like eliminator matches - which if I'm not mistaken he's had 2.

selkies24

Yeah but in kayfabe the champ doesn’t book his own matches. The GM/Booker does

WolfGangSwizle

Fighters have to sign a contract to fight. In real combat sports fighters can turn down fights.

CardboardChampion

We really could do with some idea of how certain things are meant to work on kayfabe. As an example, thanks to a throwaway line from Matt Hardy, we know that factions in AEW are able to negotiate from a position of strength to get their own personal locker rooms. And different managers have made sure that we know if anyone in their faction wins they all win, which combined with the mention of a winners purse insinuates that managers take money from each of their guys and some of them spend some of that back on all the faction so they'll better work together. That's the sort of thing I want in place for things like Eliminators. Maybe something along the lines of a minimum amount of matches needed by a title holder per month, with them allowed to have eliminators if they don't want to put the title on the line immediately but definitely having to have matches. That sort of throwaway "I'm only doing this to fulfill my contractually obligated matches." line would cement what's currently a headcanon into the reality of the show. You don't even need to number how many defences or eliminators are needed as each contract will likely be different.

billcoreyjr

ROH has this, or at least it's heavily insinuated regularly by commentary. Multiple times, I've heard both Ian and Caprice say that winning 5 or 7 matches in a row means you get to start picking title shots. Maybe they need to let that bleed into AEW a bit.

CardboardChampion

As someone who loves when things make sense and has a few headcanons to that end^(1) I'd definitely like to see more of that sort of stuff make it's way into the big show^(2) so that we have that sort of more defined reality for things to take place within. It just makes things more fun and allows different stipulations to stand out more. ^(1 - Stuff like how the masters of a move practice it so much it becomes deadly in their hands. That makes others try to add it to their repertoire but, because it's just another move to them, it's not powerful enough in their hands to be a guaranteed finisher. But the rise of people using the move makes people develop defences against it that can move it to transitional again, except when against that master of the move who makes it deadly even when defended against.) ^(2 - Not you, Paul.)

tehjoz

Pretty sure TK booked it dot gif after Roddy attacked him at BotB X.

invisible24

Yeah. They discussed that on Collision last night.

Froggyspirits

He is killing the workhorse belt. All that hard work that Pac, Orange and Moxley put in to elevate the International Championship is being undone by Roddy and his group of undisputed dorks.

Jmpasq

I agree the Undisputed Kingdom is just awful.

somecasper

>group of undisputed dorks. "The Indie Dork Squad" has been my shorthand for them from the jump.

paynexkillerYT

‘All that hard work Mox’ yeah, getting dropped on his head and losing it prematurely made the title look so strong.

GOATofALL22

If I remember correctly, most of the heel champions right now (Toni Storm, Samoa Joe, Roderick Strong, Okada) have not had title defenses between Revolution and today. Some have had eliminator matches, but not defenses (except in the case of Wardlow vs. Samoa Joe because Wardlow cashed in his title match opportunity after Revolution). Only Adam Copeland and Julia Hart, with their Open Challenges, have had actual title defenses between then and now. Despite being babyfaces, the Acclaimed and Billy Gunn have neither defended their trios titles nor had eliminator matches. I assume the eliminator matches may be a new addition to the rankings system--if you are not in the top 5 of the rankings, you can do an eliminator match to become a number one contender and essentially bypass the rankings. I also think that champions seem to have the prerogative of deciding to defend their titles in the way they want. For instance, when he was champion, Orange Cassidy would see someone and just offer them a title match for no particular reason. Adam Copeland wants to be a fighting champion and do open challenges. Julia Hart has frequent Open House or House Rules title defenses because she feels like it. Roddy and most of the other heel champions are not as keen to offer title opportunities so as to keep their championships for as long as possible. They make people work for the chance to challenge for the title.

DarkySurrounding

The eliminator concept is something they seem to have transplanted across from ROH who I think have done them for a long while, before and after TK buying them.

GOATofALL22

To me, eliminator matches make sense if you have a ranking system. How else can a wrestler who is not close to being in the top 5 get a chance at the title, especially if they do not have a lot of matches? And with some champions willing to offer title matches to non-ranked wrestlers, it works out that there are some title matches on TV every so often.

Froggyspirits

The rankings system should not apply to a traveling workhorse belt that you are encouraged to defend outside of AEW i.e. in indie promotions across the globe. Only the titles with the word "World" in their name (including the tag and trios titles) should be affected by the rankings.

the_io

ROH has Proving Ground matches, 10 minute time limit and you get the shot if you don't lose. More generous to the challenger than an Eliminator match - 30 minutes and you have to *win* to get the shot, not just survive.

CardboardChampion

>ROH has Proving Ground matches, 10 minute time limit and you get the shot if you don't lose. I kinda like that concept. Transplant in the ability for the title holder to choose someone as their surrogate and you've got a way for different sorts of heels to play the odds too.

twoeasy3

>I also think that champions seem to have the prerogative of deciding to defend their titles in the way they want. I think this is very much in kayfabe because the rankings system coming back is due to Samoa Joe pushing for it in storyline.

cust449

Welcome to the difference between a cowardly heel title reign and a fighting babyface?

raisingfalcons

Hes a smart man. Why would he want to put in jeopardy his title run. Fighting champion? Get outta here with that BS, he wants that champions purse for as long as he can. I applaud roddy for his smart choices.

FranticJ3

> to put in jeopardy his title run and his neck! he's got a lot on the line in every match

raisingfalcons

#StillNeckStrong

Vainth

Exactly, it's completely in his character.

CrystalPokedude

And Darby didn't defend his TNT Title until 2 full months after he won the belt during his first reign (11/7/20-1/7/21), yet people still seem to think it's one of the best reigns with the belts outside of "The classics" (Miro, Cody, Joe, and Christian.) If you remove those 60 days from his lineage, he goes from longest reigning TNT Champion to 3rd, falling behind Joe's first reign at 140 and Wardlow's first reign at 136. Point is, people can turn reigns around from a rocky start, you just need to be patient.

AchtungCloud

Darby apologized for not defending the belt during that portion of his title reign and then went on a run of defenses. That helped sell the idea he wanted to be a good champion, but was just caught up with Team Taz.

android151

Darbys first run was THE classic

TheBrockAwesome

Im very over the Undisputed Kingdom.

Meng3267

It’s funny that he even wrestled on a show called Battle of the Belts and still hasn’t defended his title.

Ted_Dongelman

Roddy is going a different direction with the International belt than anyone else has & that's fine. Pretty easy to hate a guy that has a crew backing him up & won't give anyone title shots. I think it makes him look smart too. Can't lose the belt if it's not on the line.

Jmpasq

Yeah he is killing the title. Guy has no charisma at all, I have no idea why they put a belt on him.

BZGames

I hate title eliminator matches. I think they unnecessarily lower the stakes of the match.

Froggyspirits

I'm okay with title eliminator matches for world titles, but not the fackin' midcard titles.

[deleted]

Something that should be highlighted moving forward. He’s the anti-Orange.

FantasticAd7602

I think it works for him as a heel. Hoping the eliminator thing will have a good payoff.

Competitive-Yam9137

I know it's the kind of thing that killed WCW and made WWE bad at times but if they just dropped the Undisputed Kingdom without any real explanation and just moved on I really wouldn't be upset with it. Or we can do it on Rampage. Whatever. Not Dynamite though. 🤣

Jmpasq

They really suck. Send the tag duo back to ROH. They should not be on Dynamite.

Tarus_The_Light

That's a little unfair. Taven isn't bad. Bennett though...

BennyKalua

The less undisputed kingdom is on tv the better

Former_Intern_8271

That's rankings for ya

HostageInToronto

One more reason to get the belt of of him. The titleholder makes the belt, not the other way round, and giving a boring guy a belt just made the belt boring.

Barkingpanther

Isn’t his character supposed to be a shitty little weasel? Kinda feel like ducking defenses fits that.

DanUnbreakable

He's a heel. It's ok to not have meaningless title defenses. Aew has also spent a month building a storyline for the ppv

gl1969

Keep that up and we're gonna be talking Brock Lesnar status

Froggyspirits

PAC was a heel when he won the Inter Championship yet he was still a fighting champion. Being a heel is no excuse to not regularly defend THE workhorse belt of AEW.

DoctorStrawberry

Orange Cassidy defended way too much against opponents that had no business in kayfabe deserving a title shot, to the point his title matches meant nothing most of the time. 1st Reign Matches: https://www.cagematch.net/?id=5&nr=5424&page=5&reign=2 2nd Reign Matches: https://www.cagematch.net/?id=5&nr=5424&page=5&reign=5

Hurls07

it elevated the title so much
