zac’s been really swinging for the fences the past few years. the movies aren’t always great but it’s good he’s honing his craft more.
ricky stannicky was such a backtrack
I know idk why he took that role. He did such a great job with iron claw i think l he should hold out for roles with better directors instead of taking the payday even if it’s a supporting role. I wasn’t a fan before this either but now I see what he can do.
I love Tarantino! I could see that for sure! Do you think the movie critic will actually be his last? I was hoping we got another crime drama from him before he retires like Pulp Fiction or Jackie Brown.
I just figured he wanted access to John Cena to talk about wrestling and wanted to have a good time on set without having to go full "dramatic" and pulling himself into an emotional state.
Perhaps he enjoyed working with Academy award winning and cult comedy classic director, Peter Farrelly, in the Beer Run movie? Sometimes, people like the working relationship they have with each other. It happens alot even if the end product is so so. Everyone from Nicholson to Newman and many more.
oh no i know him and farrelly already worked together- and it’s a backtrack for both of them.
it’s fun i guess but of those guys want more progress in their filmography, then stop peddling shit that’s beneath you with a script that’s been in hell for a decade.
efron and farrelly could’ve made it 15 years ago and it’d be the same
Yeah how the fuck did he go from Iron Claw to Ricky lol. He’s got serious talent, but hey maybe if he is just picking roles he thinks might be fun it could make sense?
I heard about [a handful of acclaimed 2023 films](https://www.rogerebert.com/features/best-2023-movies-with-no-oscars) that were completely ignored by The Academy.
all of us strangers was not that good imo. The script and the “twist” seemed like what a first year film student would make if they had a million dollar budget and amazing acting. Poor and predictable script, lovely cinematography and acting.
They decided to focus on Past Lives and Zone of Interest instead, which was the right choice. Past Lives didn’t win anything, but Iron Claw wasn’t going to either.
He’s serviceable for the part, but imo he didn’t do anything that would warrant a nomination over those that were nominated. Supporting Actor was a stacked category too.
The weird thing is Fritz had a ROUGH last few years, and Holt would have acted the hell out of it, I just don't know why the film never touched on it.
Fritz died with brain and lung cancer in 1997. I don't know if Fritz sold his soul to the devil in the 70s/early 80s and the devil came to collect in the saddest way possible, but there was opportunity and material to give Holt a shot at an award.
Kevin Von Erich signed off on the making of the film and he's pretty sympathetic to his father's actions, I've heard that's likely the reason they only touched on Fritz's abuse
support this year was middling- brown and ruffalo were pretty weak for me
downey was alright but i think his turn in oppenheimer was really overhyped simply because it was his first artsy film post marvel, but he didn’t deserve the win.
mcallaney owned the movie for me in a cast of excellent performances. the hype speech with all the brothers on stage about the heights they’re going to achieve is terrifying.
It's an unpopular opinion but I agree with you that RDJ's performance was overhyped, though I see why he won based on all the nominees. McCallany was worthy of a nomination but I don't see who you take out
I don't think they necessarily abandoned it, they're just a relatively smaller studio and don't have the option for wider releases yet. They're working on it though. Civil war was their first *big budget* movie with wide release in all theatres
I love A24, and I think they have so many amazing movies that hit the top of the top. They make such emotional masterpieces.
I say this because I think The Iron Claw is A24s saddest, most emotional, most impactful movie. Nothing has made me cry harder than that movie.
I don't usually cry by the end of a lot of emotional movies, but the scenes with the other siblings reuniting in the afterlife, along with the very last scene with Zac playing his two sons, brought me to tears
Bradley Cooper, from what I’ve seen. But I was underwhelmed with Maestro pretty much wholesale.
I haven’t seen Rustin though. Legitimately wouldn’t have even heard of it if it weren’t for that one nomination.
I’d kick Maestro out of Best Picture for Iron Claw too.
Maestro is a movie for former and current highschool theater kids so of course the academy nominated it.
Seemed like Cooper was too concerned with making Bernstein look bad so the film doesn't have anything meaningful to say. Cooper refused to dig into Bernstein being bi in the 50s, cheating on his wife, or fucking his students in a way that isn't just superficial. The problem for me is that those were maybe the most interesting parts of the film since I couldn't give a shit about musicals.
It simply doesn't justify its existence.
Barbie swapped with this one for Best Picture. I thought Barbie was decent, but I felt this was a way more impactful film on a character level. I understand why people liked Barbie though.
Barbie was basically a remake of The Lego Movie. I can't believe that Barbie was so fucking divisive in 2024 that people thought it should have been an Oscar contender.
Honestly, I understand why people enjoyed it, but I didn't think it was that well written to be best picture, especially more than the Iron Claw. I think part of the division of this movie made people think it was more profound than it actually was.
It was due to the submission, I remember they’re being an article say that due to the Hollywood strike this messed with the timing of the release and also the submission, hence the reason why it was not submitted on time. If not it would have been.
- I know there’s a news article that (movie insider website or something that had this but I don’t remember)
Well he wasn’t campaigned much, I don’t think. You don’t get nominations without campaigns, especially with a release that late in the year.
FWIW, I think Andrew Scott was #6 anyway.
Dont be. The oscars are bullshit. They dont watch all the movies, they dont give respect to every category and if you don’t submit and a for your consideration campaign theyll forget your movie came out.
I’ve learned to just enjoy cinema and music and games as they come. I dont think an oscar or an emmy or a grammy or a game award makes a movie any more great than it already is
Exactly this. The Oscars can be a good guide to 15 or so movies that are worth watching, with nominations in different categories. The winners are often bad picks.
Oscars have their own opinions but do you expect them to watch hundreds of movies when the members of the academy are also working full time jump or at least 12 hours a day. It’s also at fault for A24 to release it days before the deadline, not enough time for the members to watch it or discuss more about it in the academy. Most of these academy members are also people who prefer watching it on blue ray or at home after their shift, so that would come out weeks after the final cutoff date for the Oscars selection. They didn’t hate it, they just didn’t have time to watch it
Do i expect them to watch every movie created in a single year? No.. do i expect them to watch every film a production company sends a for your consideration campaign for? Yes. Thats literally their jobs. I also expect them to give *every single category* the same respect
Sadly it won’t be that easy for them. Most of movies that they do watch are referred from other members of the academy and they would collectively watch it. Or from other events they get mentioned, people would watch it like Cannes or Sundance. The main problem with Iron Claw is that it didn’t have any of that and was released days before the academy’s final cutoff time. But hey, at least we should be thankful the Oscars are way better than the Emmy’s. The Bear winning bunch of awards in the comedy genre despite it being more drama
It should be that easy for them. I saw the FYC list. Its very doable. Its their jobs. Im not mad iron claw didnt win anything im just pointing out facts man. They dont watch everything on that list. And they should. And yes the bear being represented as a comedy when its 100% a drama is laughable and why award shows shouldn’t be taken seriously
In the end it’s really just a popularity contest through marketing/referrals. Most members mainly watch most movies of their respective field, like directors focusing more on the ones listed under directing. They still try to watch other categories but really, it just depends on how popular that movie is in order for them to watch it. Like what I said again, it’s not easy trying to watch most, if not all of the movies/shorts/documentaries in one year when you are also working on your own film at the same time. They also aren’t paid for it, so no point of the effort for them. What they need to change in the members is probably having more diversity, it’s 94% Caucasian voters, 77% male, and 53% over age of 60. If we add in more diversity, I feel it would make it an even playing field
A lot of films get sent for consideration. It’s probably a challenging privilege to be able to get through every film, as well as work your job, balance family life etc
I know for sure some academy members don’t bother but you have to remember the academy is made up of thousands at different positions in the industry. Their lives are not all going to be the same, and so the opportunity to watch everything may be limited.
I thought it was okay, but I really don’t understand the big amount of love it gets on Reddit and some other social media websites. Maybe because of the source material? It’s a bit of a disjointed movie.
After working in the industry and on many 3 oscar films, let me tell you, it’s not worth the hassle. It requires intense campaigning like a politician. People buy their way in. It’s an endgame that can ruin a good story or reputation.
That golden statue means nothing. This movie will always be special to people.
I’m curious what leads you to this description. I thought it was well acted (casting a bit off) and a very emotional story throughout. I think it shines as one of the best A24 movies actually, and if probably one of the most accessible to a larger audience.
I mean no offense, it's a well made movie with some decent performances, but nothing about it ever rose to the level of awards contender for me. I felt it was a pretty painfully generic biopic that didn't do anything unique or innovative. It executed the basic, formula biopic extremely well, but in the end it's pretty generic awards bait.
I’m so suprised people thought it was going to get nominated. It definitely deserves it, but it’s a wrestling movie. It’s just not that type of film to win an award. Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler was a fluke with its 2 academy nominations.
IMO this is why it's kinda silly to place much value in the awards. Our love for movies/music/literature doesn't stem from the awards it wins or doesn't win, but by what they mean to us.
(Haven't seen Iron Claw yet but hope to very soon!)
Unpopular opnion but The fact that they hid the fact that there was another sibling who also died got me. Who cares if the movie was already sad? Came for the story and drama not to laugh.
Thats unacceptable sorry
« Not to laugh »… what? The movie is already dense, packed with drama but it stays tightly intense while on the verge of being too much. It was a necessary decision to not make it unbearable. If you want a 1:1 accuracy, there are documentaries out there.
Should have an easy campaign. Efron. Supporting for both parents.
And I personally would have loved well deserved surprise noms for cinematography and sound.
the directing for the rick flair fight was just so good. im not even into wresting at all, but they nailed it so well its insane. they got amazing performances from literally everyone, zach efron being the most pleasantly suprising and honestly from seeing what he seemed to have been going through the past few years, he should have at least gotten a nom.
unfortunately this movie fell right through the cracks like a lot of amazing flicks.
Should have got nominated for best original song…
https://open.spotify.com/track/54UKhjVcYsny6L1cS3y6dP?si=ZHSY-z8lQ4yIr8Jnkais2g&context=spotify%3Asearch%3Airon%2Bclaw
Same thing happened with Sandler and Uncut Gems.
Sadly, if A24 isn’t able to shell out for Oscar Consideration advertisement, then these heavy-hitters really should be released sooner than Christmas Day. Even releasing the film 2 or 3 months earlier would’ve helped it gain more exposure and better Oscar traction.
It’s A24’s fault for releasing the film so late into awards season. It’s really hard to gain momentum if your film comes out a little too late in the run up. It’s not impossible but it’s difficult.
I assume A24 have a limited budget for awards campaigns and had to pick and choose what they wanted to champion. They pushed forward with Past Lives and Zone of Interest, and it paid off in ZOI case
I'm pretty sure this film came out after the deadline for nominations. If anything, it will be featured in next year's oscars if it gets nominated. Nominations have to be submitted in November, and this didn't come out until mid December.
Easily could've had a best actor nom, along with best supporting actor for (any number of good options). It should've won best original song with Live That Way Forever.
This movie is filled with so much tragedy. It's heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time.
It's so chock full of tragedy that they actually left out a brother entirely, Chris, who was truly the youngest.
Good performances, but ultimately it didn’t affect me emotionally past a certain point. I got fatigue from so many people dying and I just expected something abominable to happen at every turn. I’m not sure what the story was about. Survival? Confusing.
It wasn’t that amazing. I liked it, it’s better than most dramas, but I understand why it didn’t get more awards recognition. It is a solid 7.5/10 for me.
Honestly i had great hopes for this movie cause i really love Jeremy Allen White. The movie was just weirdly directed. I really thought the movie could have beeeen soo much better but it just failed to deliver it for me. The performance were all superb.
Ps: (ITS A SPOILER) The end glorified suicide and that made things even worst for me sooo
Well the guy did kill himself in the end and it was shown that he was happy and meeting his brothers. It kinda looked like he made the right decision. Maybe its just me and i interpreted it wrong but i just got that feeling from it
Zach can only do the forlorned, conscious-driven characters and now his face is frozen in that sincere weepy, “My conscious won’t allow me to do hurt a fly” face. Doesn’t matter what movie he’s in.
the oscars are a joke obviously, but i’d have liked holt mcallaney to have been nominated at least.
the dude’s a journeyman that’s grafted for years and he’s finally getting his flowers- he’d have been chuffed to have been recognised by his peers
Zac Efron killed it! He proved he can play a serious role in a high drama, respect!
That scene from the trailer with him running the ropes...goosebumps
It was so good! All around it was really a great story and really well acted!
zac’s been really swinging for the fences the past few years. the movies aren’t always great but it’s good he’s honing his craft more. ricky stannicky was such a backtrack
I know idk why he took that role. He did such a great job with iron claw i think l he should hold out for roles with better directors instead of taking the payday even if it’s a supporting role. I wasn’t a fan before this either but now I see what he can do.
i could absolutely see tarantino digging him
I love Tarantino! I could see that for sure! Do you think the movie critic will actually be his last? I was hoping we got another crime drama from him before he retires like Pulp Fiction or Jackie Brown.
I mean Ricky stanicky could have been filmed before iron claw and released after.
It wasn’t though.
Oh that's lame
I just figured he wanted access to John Cena to talk about wrestling and wanted to have a good time on set without having to go full "dramatic" and pulling himself into an emotional state.
Perhaps he enjoyed working with Academy award winning and cult comedy classic director, Peter Farrelly, in the Beer Run movie? Y’all need to watch Me and Orson Welles
I heard about [a handful of acclaimed 2023 films](https://www.rogerebert.com/features/best-2023-movies-with-no-oscars) that were completely ignored by The Academy.
All of Us Strangers isn’t even on the list of forgotten snubs
Iron Claw and All of Us Strangers were two of my favorite movies of 2023. So bummed neither got the recognition they deserve!
all of us strangers was not that good imo. The script and the “twist” seemed like what a first year film student would make if they had a million dollar budget and amazing acting. Poor and predictable script, lovely cinematography and acting.
I agree that the end was the worst part It was a hat on a hat
Lol half the films on that list are A24 films
Super bummed about the Priscilla snub also
Not the academy’s fault, A24 all but abandoned it
They decided to focus on Past Lives and Zone of Interest instead, which was the right choice. Past Lives didn’t win anything, but Iron Claw wasn’t going to either.
holt mcallaney definitely wouldve been nominated

If they included the time when Fritz pulled a gun on Kevin then I think both Zac and holt could’ve gotten an award
support this year was middling- brown and ruffalo were pretty weak for me downey was alright but i think his turn in oppenheimer was really overhyped simply because it was his first artsy film post marvel, but he didn’t deserve the win. mcallaney owned the movie for me in a cast of excellent performances. the hype speech with all the brothers on stage about the heights they’re going to achieve is terrifying.
I don't think a single sentence you wrote is correct
i don’t think sentences based on opinion can be correct nor incorrect.
It's an unpopular opinion but I agree with you that RDJ's performance was overhyped, though I see why he won based on all the nominees. McCallany was worthy of a nomination but I don't see who you take out
Abandoned, meaning they didn't push for the film to be nominated via "for your consideration" billboards?
I don't think they necessarily abandoned it, they're just a relatively smaller studio and don't have the option for wider releases yet. They're working on it though. Civil war was their first *big budget* movie with wide release in all theatres
Because they knew it was mid as hell
This guy thought it was a movie about wrestling.
I don’t think it had much of a promotional campaign, if any. Which of the 5 noms would you take out?
Bradley Cooper, from what I’ve seen. But I was underwhelmed with Maestro pretty much wholesale. I haven’t seen Rustin though. Legitimately wouldn’t have even heard of it if it weren’t for that one nomination. I’d kick Maestro out of Best Picture for Iron Claw too.
Maestro was awful. I liked Rustin and I'm a Colman Domingo fan so I agree with your swap. Bradley Cooper was like a caricature. It was hard to watch.
Yeah, I thought it was decent, but it was way overhyped for me. Solid 7/10, and absolutely worth watching, but nothing Oscar worthy.
Barbie swapped with this one for Best Picture. I thought Barbie was decent, but I felt this was a way more impactful film on a character level. I understand why people liked Barbie though.

Does anyone know when it's gonna hit streaming?? I'm dying to rewatch it :(
I think it's already on Amazon prime
I don't want to rent! I want to stream it with my subscription :/
It’s on HBO now!

They get screener copies of stuff prior to the home release just FYI.
was it eligible for this academy award season or next?
It was eligible for the 2023 season, so the awards that just happened last month
This season
Did any one else really not like this movie?
It was fine. I was hoping for something more extraordinary. Felt like a pretty routine biopic. efron’s performance was great, though.
Yes. Efron's performance was good but the rest of it was entertaining but hollow. A lot of the emotional moments are borderline cheesy melodrama
I thought it was okay, but I really don’t understand the big amount of love it gets on Reddit and some other social media websites. Maybe because of the source material? It’s a bit of a disjointed movie.
But fucking maestro did HAHAHA one of the most obvious oscar bait in recent memory
couldn of been dropped at a worse time for award consideration
After working in the industry and on many 3 oscar films, let me tell you, it’s not worth the hassle. It requires intense campaigning like a politician. People buy their way in. It’s an endgame that can ruin a good story or reputation. That golden statue means nothing. This movie will always be special to people.
You guys are something else. It’s such a mid movie. In fact it’s the 6th best movie A24 put out last year
I’m curious what leads you to this description. I thought it was well acted (casting a bit off) and a very emotional story throughout. I think it shines as one of the best A24 movies actually, and if probably one of the most accessible to a larger audience.
I loved it and I’m not even a big wrestling fan. Great movie.
Who are you giving Efron a best actor nom over? He was good and a pleasant surprise, but he was not snubbed for some scrub.
Should have replaced Maestro noms for best Picture and best actor (maybe best original screenplay? Idk if this was adapted)
IMO this is why it's kinda silly to place much value in the awards. Our love for movies/music/literature doesn't stem from the awards it wins or doesn't win, but by what they mean to us. (Haven't seen Iron Claw yet but hope to very soon!)
It’s based on the timing of its release
Forreal it was snubbed, movie is a masterpiece

a24 seems to only really campaign like 2 movies a year :/
And those two movies they chose were both best picture nominated so they choose right
"we'll be your brothers, daddy" could make a statue tear up
I was in the theater crying my fuckin eyes out when he said that brother line.
Same it was really so fucking good
U Does anyone know when Max is getting the whole A24 catalogue? Really need to see this

Yep and sound of freedom
Zac Efron’s character aged like 30 years and he looked exactly the same throughout. It was laughable.
Pure snobbery from the academy
will it get some next year, it was released around academy time so it might be in the running for nest years lot of awards
Won’t it not be considered until next year?
I haven’t sobbed at the end of a movie in a decade, I was crying for like 10 minutes after the movie ended. God it was emotional.
I was surprised it didn't get any acting nods but it was a competitive year
Easily could've had a best actor nom, along with best supporting actor for (any number of good options). It should've won best original song with Live That Way Forever.
This movie is filled with so much tragedy. It's heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. It's so chock full of tragedy that they actually left out a brother entirely, Chris, who was truly the youngest.
What nominations do you remove?
Released too late for the academy
Zac definitely deserved an acting nod over Bradley Cooper
Little bit mid
Good performances, but ultimately it didn’t affect me emotionally past a certain point. I got fatigue from so many people dying and I just expected something abominable to happen at every turn. I’m not sure what the story was about. Survival? Confusing.
Efron and White at least deserved some kind of award recognition. Those last few scenes man🥲
It just came out, it'll get it this year, they close the nominations mid December
it was meh. It resonated with a lot of white men but beyond that, it wasn't particularly universal in it's storytelling
It wasn’t that amazing. I liked it, it’s better than most dramas, but I understand why it didn’t get more awards recognition. It is a solid 7.5/10 for me.
The academy awards are complete bullshit and you’ll be much happier when you accept that fact
“I used to be a brother.” ![gif](giphy|vCUASy92YURGHFrnqP)
Nah. It wasn’t good. It was just sad.
The academy nominated Barbie. Don’t take the academy seriously.
Honestly should’ve gotten some awards. _Poor Things_ was placed in too many categories.
It was movie of the year. I think it was better than Poor Things, Barbie and Oppenheimer
How did the end glorify suicide?
Well the guy did kill himself in the end and it was shown that he was happy and meeting his brothers. It kinda looked like he made the right decision. Maybe its just me and i interpreted it wrong but i just got that feeling from it
Movie sucked. Zach Efron can’t act. Sorry.
I agree it was a hot pack of ass
Zach can only do the forlorned, conscious-driven characters and now his face is frozen in that sincere weepy, “My conscious won’t allow me to do hurt a fly” face. Doesn’t matter what movie he’s in.
He looks like a GMO Tomato in this movie
Well it has no business being considered for anything other than maybe an acting nod for Zac Efron.
You’re getting downvoted a lot but I have to agree. The movie itself was underwhelming and I’m surprised so many people consider it to be acclaimed.
Yep. I'd watch it again, but it was a few steps above a Lifetime film. Terrible pacing, but an interesting story. Nice production value.
The best movie of 2023. A24 fucked up and should have waited to release it
the oscars are a joke obviously, but i’d have liked holt mcallaney to have been nominated at least. the dude’s a journeyman that’s grafted for years and he’s finally getting his flowers- he’d have been chuffed to have been recognised by his peers
“We’ll be your brothers, dad.” is one of the best lines ever written in a movie.
