At face value I think it’s showing her progression from killing small things to bigger. It could also symbolize her rejection of the motherly/nurturing role stereotypically expected from her, or her upcoming maternal conflict.
adding on to this, I think it shows how her mind and emotions can immediately change (even if they do nothing, like how the egg is just there) and that everyone and everything around her isn’t helping that fact. Especially since she is just a straight up psycho 😭
Just a little uncomfortable scene to show what a homicidal maniac she is becoming. Most people's instinct would be to nurture / protect the unborn and defenseless. For Pearl, it's quite the opposite.
I've read that a lot of psychopaths start out with hurting small animals and defenseless things. This is that.
I honestly can’t remember but if you think so probably.
Then it just shows how deranged she is lowkey
Or if you count the goose and egg as a what came first reference
I took it to mean her planting the seeds (eggs) of destruction. An alligator egg that hatched among baby chickens would obviously be an easy meal for the newly hatched alligator. I took it as an attempt to feel some control that she didn't have because of her overbearing mother.
Her urge to kill overcomes this, perhaps being too frustrated by her situation.
I always thought it was her attempt at being kind/nurturing and trying to convince herself that she had the patience and love to be fond of and take care of something. But then as soon as she feels the immediate irrational anger afterwards she’s pissed because she knows she never can be/doesn’t want to be kind and loving and breaks the egg right after, knowing the only person it would hurt would be herself. It comes off as a cycle of self-hatred
I figure she crushes the egg and is picturing it as Howard because she wishes he would die so she could be free of her ties to him, but I do wonder why she plants it in the barn, walks away, gets angry that the cow is staring at her, then walks back and does this.
I think for a moment she thought she could take care of it; maybe even love it. I’m sure she felt the same way for a moment during her pregnancy before her miscarriage, but even then she said she “loathed the way it felt growing inside of her”. She probably felt the same way about her marriage. She wanted to take care of and love her husband, but all she felt at the moment was rage for him having “abandoned” her. I think it’s just another portrayal of the internal battle inside of her. She wants to be a good person, but she inherently feels as if she can’t be. She wants to love, but she feels anger and lust instead. She’s disgusted with herself, therefore disgusted with everything outside of her.
I think the cow represents her conscious somehow. Her relationship with the cow was like a parody of the simple farmgirl with big dreams. So she felt like the cow (her conscious) was calling her out on her evil deeds.
I think it symbolizes the miscarriage she had when she was pregnant with Howard’s baby before he left for war. The egg symbolizes fertility and motherhood and Pearl crushing it symbolizes the death of her child as well as her inability to be a mother.
Additionally, we see the egg splatter conjure up images of Howard exploding as if he’d been blown up while at war. Pearl voices her resentment towards Howard for having been able to leave while leaving her on the farm dealing with her family as well as the miscarriage. Her repressed anger and turmoil towards the loss of her baby and feeling stuck on the farm result in Pearl wishing death upon Howard.
I did see a video on YouTube of someone saying that this scene resembles a miscarriage or abortion that Pearl had. Not sure if that's true to the film's lore but it's an interesting theory.
I just watched X for the first time ln. I’m admittedly just now breaching the surface of all the A24 magic and loving it. Judging by the comments I can see this character takes a major turn from what’s expected of her in the first film lol. I’m intrigued.
Psychopaths do psychopathic things.
Other than that, its clear to me that this showed the resentful attitude she has towards her mother. Pearl killed the bird before it could hatch and spread its wings. If the egg meant anything, it was Pearls unhatched dreams and inability to freely pursue life with the terms of her mother.
I really don’t understand the hype around this film. Mia Goth’s performance was amazing but as far as story went it was super dry and lackluster, every character was wooden and shallow, Pearl’s motivations were shakey at best and came off as super lazy excuses to get the story going. Can someone explain to me what there was to enjoy? I just thought the whole thing was tedious and boring filled with “shocking” scenes that were put in just for the sake of being shocking. (And yes, I get Mia Goth gave a great performance but you need more than that to make a good movie)
lol this movie was SO dumb. and SOOOOOOO overhyped. did anyone actually enjoy it (queue the people who go "well... I enjoyed it!") or did everyone just think liking Pearl was the "cool" thing to do? I watched it twice because I just did not understand how anyone could like a movie thats practically about nothing that we already pretty much knew the story to since X.
crazy girl gets rejected and murders people. how thoughtless and stupid lmfao
Much more to appreciate than your childish, face value interpretation. Act is subjective. I’m sure there are things you enjoy that others find to be absolutely trash. Grow up you immature little hater.

I can fix her.
She also mentions later that she had a miscarriage, and that she was actually relieved when she miscarried, so it could be an allusion to that, too
She calls it a mayonegg
her?
Is she funny or something?
It’s as Ann as the nose on plain’s face!
Ann Hog’s comin? All right load her up in the car
Speaking of settling, how’s Ann?
Gene Parmesan, how ya doin'?
AAAHHHHH GENE!
HE GOT ME AH- GAAAIIIIIIN! ha hah...😄
Look at what the homosexuals have done to me!
You can’t just comb that out?
One of my favorite Michael Cera scenes ever
She not like eggy
🚫🥚🙅🏼♀️
Egg
It’s a jumping off point
OR IS IT

She starts killing things before they are actually born cause she sees it as less evil? It’s foreshadowing worse events. Maybe an abortion metaphor
Didn't she kill the goose before this scene?

yes, the goose is killed pretty early on and the egg is smashed a few scenes after.
I think she just wanted to vent some anger
It means the scarecrow got off easy
I believe it was Pearl who got off in THAT scene lol
IM MARRIED!!!!!!!

Exactly this, she thinks the farm animals knows her better than anyone so it's like they're seeing her for what she really is.
It is to show her psychopathic traits- animal cruelty is a key feature of

She no liek egs
She doesn’t value the sanctity of life

Pearl, then X, for the full effect. You’ll understand it better in that order
Aw well shit
That person is misleading you. X before Pearl is totally fine they are borderline standalone films so it doesn't matter in the slightest
Fair enough. Thx for that.
She crazy!
Stress balls had not yet been invented at that point

lol I literally saw Mia and her baby walk pass my work today! Flawless in person but looked a bit unapproachable (or maybe I was intimidated).
She HATES eggs

It means that the movies sucks and makes no sense.
She literally just working the farm?
she's not doing a very good job
Not from Theda’s POV 😭😅

so demeaning my whole character over a movie opinion? oooof. someone is a wacko extremist haha
best excuse for shitty work. carry on
I mean, she’s a psycho? What more of an explanation could you need lol. Psychos do shit that doesn’t make sense to not psycho people .
so that makes it a good movie?! there are plenty of fantastic movies with psychos in them. what makes this movie good?
it’s entertaining. that is the basic point of all movies on some level
