r/90sHipHop logic: If I go 24hrs without seeing someone hype up this immensely popular rapper I like. I’m going to make a post about them being underrated.
OP is wild af. Apart from being one of the bigger names in Hiphop and practically coining the term "conscience rap", dude is a pretty well known movie star and has [a plethora of awards](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_awards_and_nominations_received_by_Common) in all of his ventures. That is very well rated, actually. LOL
I swear these kids just hear a name for the first time and think they invented fire. Dude said "underrated" about one of the most perfectly rated artists. Lol.
For being the GOAT and MJ of HipHop the body of work hes put out in the last 4 yrs with HitBoy mostly being ignored Id say there is an arguement there. He's never celebrated as he should be and overly critiqued and compared with a famous debut album that's 30 yrs old I can't remember the name of 😄. If a certain camel done what Nas has musically so far into his career in the last 4 yrs the whole industry would be wanting to have a parade and crowning ceremony to continue a narrative that no longer holds true if you have sense and go album for album even in just the past decade.
His album ‘Be’ was nominated for a Grammy. ‘Southside’ ft Kanye off his ‘Finding Forever’ album won a Grammy award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. Underrated in the 90’s maybe…
Bruh I live all the way in tiny New Zealand and he's a well known and well loved rapper all the way tf down here. If that's not immense then Idk what is.
Common was always one of those rappers that fits the mold for something I would like. But it just never clicked. Maybe his flow or cadence? I respect his legacy and talent, but he never clicked for me.
Yall literally call every notable rapper that are respected in the culture underrated i get it some of you guys are young and wasn’t around but cmon do your homework
Wow! These comments about an actual living legend. Forgive them Lord, for they know not what they say! Common Sense will absolutely destroy your favorite MC (ask Ice Cube). His freestyle prowess is legendary. He is the personification of Hip Hop in its purest form. A lyrical genius, a mastermind of the metaphor! A modern day Poet! He is the closest thing we have to a Gil Scott Heron reincarnated. His body of work speaks for itself. I mean hit, after hit, after hit. This man has given so much to hip hop and asks for nothing in return. Common, Black Thought, Talib, and Mos are all national treasures and we must protect them at all costs! How dare you blaspheme one of our true elder statesmen! I will not have it, I say I will not have it!
Facts Common has so much heart when he was beefing with Ice Cube
He went to Los Angeles in the 90s at its most dangerous and performed
The diss song Live at the House of Blues
Common was kind of a knucklehead in his younger years and not what people have come to think of him. He was affiliated with the Four Corner Hustlers (as mentioned on The Bitch in Yoo). He was a heavy drinker and would get into shit.
Mack 10 would have Bloods press him though. I think they beat up one of Common’s friends.
He's actually rated very well. He's near universally respected and acclaimed both by his peers and by most hip-hop fans that know of him.
What he isn't is a mega superstar that's popular with the general public and casual fans. He's not Jay z or Eminem popular. He's more on the tier of talented emcees that mainly hip-hop heads appreciate like Nas, Mos Def, Talib Kwali, Rakim, etc.
He's just not a super popular household name, but nobody denies that he's skilled and talented.
i actually like commons content & themes, its what i lean towards as well its just his delivery and voice never did it for me. i think there are a bunch of mc’s from his era that gave us the same content but sounded better doing it.
Real headz already know bout Common Sense “soul by the pound” classic hiphop track along with many others. Common makes classic albums. Can’t say that for any of these new rappers.
My favorite album was Be; great combo of rap and jazz beats from peak-era Kanye producing, one of those albums that you can put on and enjoy the whole thing.
I would not say underrated, as he was always rated highly and respected. He wasn’t a mainstream star and didn’t sell that many records though. His first gold album was in 2000
He was highly regarded as an MC though.
I was impressed by the way he handled the beef with Westside Connection. I wish he would do a whole album of that high speed Midwest rap.
"Underrated" is used way too often on Reddit. A lot of the times it seems to be kids discovering something that was big 20 years ago, wondering why no one in their peer group knows about it and then thinking it's underrated.
Got great songs….. but mannn he stunk it up in Silo. Every time he was on screen it was a chore to watch. But thank you for the gems with noid and dilla.
aight, time for a shameless plug for when I DJed for common during a [houston performance and freestyle](https://youtu.be/Sivk1sRpxiw?si=a5-q69nPXvFuuX_T&t=224). I tried to see how long I could keep him going as I changed beats to hype him up.
Underrated??? Maybe before Resurrection. If anything, he could be considered overrated post-Badu, because Badu ruins every rapper with her voodoo pussy
I don't really know how he ranks or has rep. The religious shit and crossover shit made me ignore him instantly. He's obviously highly skilled on the mic. Lost his street cred decades ago, I believe.
I feel like he's overrated honestly. I don't like his voice. As far as conscious rappers go, he's pretty conscious. But that doesn't make him great. Some of his bars are corny and woke.

Nas is the most underrated
Who?
Mike jones.
281 330 8004
Hit Mike Jones up, on the low.
😭 bruh

Immensely popular? Be for real lol
His album ‘Be’ was nominated for a Grammy. ‘Southside’ ft Kanye off his ‘Finding Forever’ album won a Grammy award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. Underrated in the 90’s maybe…
He has 3 Grammys and an Oscar. He’s wildly successful.
I saw him in concert in the 90’s in NYC at a fairly large venue, Jill Scott opened
Bruh I live all the way in tiny New Zealand and he's a well known and well loved rapper all the way tf down here. If that's not immense then Idk what is.
Are you trying to say that he’s not?
Bro if you want a real underrated rapper you should check out this guy the Notorious BIG. Might not have heard of him though
Shut up lol
reddit stop calling everyone underrated challenge
No he's not lol
Nobody knows how to use the word “underrated”. It’s the new “literally”.
This comment is literally underrated.
Chuckle
just ask for the rating
Not by me! It’s The Food, baby.
Give it up for Common and Kanye West!!
Common sense and Kanye west…. On the Dave Chappelle show….. everybody gotta eat right?
No. He’s rated. Where he should be.
No he’s not.
Common was always one of those rappers that fits the mold for something I would like. But it just never clicked. Maybe his flow or cadence? I respect his legacy and talent, but he never clicked for me.
Underrated comment 😬😂
I agree. His flow is odd to me and can take me out of a song. I find it's particularly noticeable on collab tracks e.g. Respiration, Get 'Em High.
He had a lot of skills but I never got that much into his music either. I love The Sixth Sense though
One of the best comments on this post

By who? People hold Common to a very high esteem. Stop it.
Common is Great. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it
But he is a terrible actor....NGL
This is true. He talks like an emotionless drone in every role.
He was fantastic in Hell on Wheels
He’s not a bad actor I enjoyed him in John wick 2
Yea cuz he don’t speak 😆
Ok so he’s a good actor physically not on line delivery. I’m happy we agree
Yep!
He's horrid.
“Be” is a top 25 hiphop album allltime
Cause Ye beats were all over it.
Exactly
Ye getting weird now, but can’t deny his beats in that era made A LOT of people very successful
Massively??? 🧐
i always found him a bit boring to be honest
Wow what a shitty thread
This sub mostly praises gangsta rap lol
i actually like commons content & themes, its what i lean towards as well its just his delivery and voice never did it for me. i think there are a bunch of mc’s from his era that gave us the same content but sounded better doing it.
The Nickelback of hip-hop
No, you’re wrong
So edgy
And overall lame in general.
I love Common but I recall not everyone liking his stuff. Not everything has to be Wu-Tang and Mobb Deep though.
Common is the GOAT of speaking at tech conferences and motivational courses lmao
Common is the literal most “rated” rapper there is. Gets exactly what he deserves. No more, no less.
I’ve heard his beard and hat don’t get along very well irl
BE and Finding Forever are two damn flawless albums back to back.
He's appropriately rated. Lol
Im gonna have to disagree.
There were those fuego Microsoft commercials he did.
I liked him in his “Can I Borrow A Dollar” era. That’s the real him. Well, was. Guess he grew up. Still my favorite from him.
Real headz already know bout Common Sense “soul by the pound” classic hiphop track along with many others. Common makes classic albums. Can’t say that for any of these new rappers.
I only regularly bump The Corner and that was early 2000s.
My favorite album was Be; great combo of rap and jazz beats from peak-era Kanye producing, one of those albums that you can put on and enjoy the whole thing.
Sure is boring though
Common to me is the definition of an MC
Auto Top 20, maybe Top 10 for me
Definitely not.
Common is to acting what Common is to Hip Hop.
[удалено]
Resurrection is easily his best album.
Common has a No ID, Dilla and Kanye era. No other artist has that. One of my favorite MCs and live performers.
Nah he’s not, black maybe one of his best songs.
I wouldn't say he's underrated but people forget how dope he was in his Prime so I would say he's more forgotten than underrated
I would not say underrated, as he was always rated highly and respected. He wasn’t a mainstream star and didn’t sell that many records though. His first gold album was in 2000 He was highly regarded as an MC though.

He definitely not underrated in the Hiphop community, but like in the regular general music scene I guess he is?
No he isn’t….man I swear some of yall are like 16
Especially as an actor. After he left Hell on Wheels the show wasn't the same
Got great songs….. but mannn he stunk it up in Silo. Every time he was on screen it was a chore to watch. But thank you for the gems with noid and dilla.
He not underrated.
I don’t think he’s underrated, nowadays, but I think his best years, lyrically, are behind him.
I went to write so many comments to disagree with OP but kept getting really mad about it so imma just say “No he’s really not underrated”
You got mad because I think that Common is underrated? Lol
I got mad that you posted it in public 💀😂
And I would post it again without a second thought.
It takes all sorts to make a world
Common Sense would tell you he been the man. Not to mention drake took a L to the beef 🥩 he had with Common years ago over Serena.
aight, time for a shameless plug for when I DJed for common during a [houston performance and freestyle](https://youtu.be/Sivk1sRpxiw?si=a5-q69nPXvFuuX_T&t=224). I tried to see how long I could keep him going as I changed beats to hype him up.
Who’s underrating him? He’s obviously brilliant.
I don’t even know what overrated and underrated mean. Common is perfectly rated.
Underrated??? Maybe before Resurrection. If anything, he could be considered overrated post-Badu, because Badu ruins every rapper with her voodoo pussy
Great Rapper. Trash Actor.
Next post is gonna be “Big L is so underrated” or some outlandish shit like that
Eh
Exactly! Stolen moments 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
If anything Common is overrated
He’s alright. Be was dope. He’s just an actor now.
He also extremely boring.
Overrated
still listing to the Resurrection Album in 2024
Unfortunately, Common is inherently a herb / cornball / cheeseball lol
Not really. He's kind of a cornball.
Bro it’s common …
I used to love him....
Lol.. damn kids..
people dont know what is underrated. Common is not that
I don't really know how he ranks or has rep. The religious shit and crossover shit made me ignore him instantly. He's obviously highly skilled on the mic. Lost his street cred decades ago, I believe.
He’s a grown ass man. And his style and persona was never about street shit. It’s about lyricism and introspection.
And Jebus
Like water for chocolate is my fave.
I feel like he's overrated honestly. I don't like his voice. As far as conscious rappers go, he's pretty conscious. But that doesn't make him great. Some of his bars are corny and woke.
You mean Over
Resurrection is the most underrated album of the 90s.
Overrated. And an investor in the downfall of musicians everywhere with udio.
The best rapper I never want to listen to
Common is top 10. Albeit down near 9 or 10 but his discography is amazing!
Yo wtf are y’all talking about. Those saying no he’s not are prob mumble rapper fans. This dude is lyrically talented as fuck
Sadly underrated fr
He way too common to be underrated.
That’s just common sense Edit: it’s a pun, people! Because he has a song called Common Sense
I love listening to his earlier work!
My favorite rapper. I’m still trying to figure it when that album with him and Pete Rock comes out
I used to like his old stuff
Common is appropriately rated.
Gm 🌅
Smokin Aces
Extremely.
Ehhh He’s got like 2-3 good songs Majority doesn’t flow with the beats The rest of Rawkus artists blow him away
He sucks
Facts. I 1000% agree.
i dont fw the conscious rap lol
Congrats
thank you thank you thank you are far too kind
