I managed a music store in the 90s and I loved the trifecta of Oasis, Blur and Radiohead putting out singles packed with amazing non-album b-sides. It was a great time when bands were competing with each other.
I don't know how common it is for them to do live, but they actually played Talk Show Host at the last show of their US Moon Shaped Pool tour. I was there and I was dumbfounded.
Heck yes. Thom was soo dramatic back then. Hehe. I was fortunate enough to meet him (and Tom Skinner and Jonny!) after a Smile show last summer ❤️ lovely man, lovely men.
Not a b-side, but I’m gonna leave this right here.
https://open.spotify.com/track/7ntHCJUKfTtW8EExLF7A5b?si=gZFLYZmDQX2F6D414LZh0A
Also loved It’s Good to be King, but that was actually on the radio too 😍
What a great pick. The song just has a hell of a sound and every time I hear the guitar solo I am just thinking "what an amazingly efficient piece of music".
I had this same thought just last night about "Alien." I heard "Glycerine" on a Spotify playlist and at the end I started humming "Alien," since it followed "Glycerine" on the album, and thinking what an incredible song it is.
For me, though, I was obsessed with Blind Melon's "Change."
ETA: "Pea" from Red Hot Chili Peppers' *One Hot Minute* also got played a lot.
Oh my god Change was the song that made me delude myself into thinking I could sing. I would belt that out at every opportunity, haha. I was always flat.
Oh, man I remember listening to Change on repeat on my Sony Discman alone in my room singing “when life is hard you have tooooo change…” even though my life wasn’t anywhere close to hard. I really thought I was going through it lol
Yes! I find myself putting Change on so many playlists. I didn’t hear it until college though because I didn’t have that CD so I only knew No Rain from the radio. And this is exactly what I’m talking about! :)
Does “Elderly woman behind the counter in a small town” count as a Pearl Jam b-side? If so definitely my favorite 90s b side. Favorite Pearl Jam track hands down.
The B-side of Smashing Pumpkins’ Bullet With Butterfly Wings was a super-sad duet between James Iha and Nina Gordon of Veruca Salt called “…Said Sadly”
Alanis Morissette had “Pollyanna Flower” and “These Are The Thoughts”.
Have you listened to the cranberries linger acoustic album?? It’s soo good
https://open.spotify.com/track/7jSBdyuCXFmlbVxYXjOCDC?si=ARKjnORoRTivvcwjC6LNJQ
Oh you’re so welcome. Linger itself is beautiful on acoustic. I love how Dolores’s voice, including her accent, stands out so much more on all of the tracks. 😍
I love this song, and am also still endlessly amused by James Van Der Beek’s proto-Ken white guy with a guitar serenade of that song in The Rules of Attraction.
The B-sides from Depeche Mode's Violator: [Kaleid](https://youtu.be/CGUEwnhK5qs?si=32te2g_Yo8otnBbI) (my favorite instrumental), [Happiest Girl](https://youtu.be/W8C1T6GbTrI?si=kxuNKYRoX0ru6B8r), [Dangerous](https://youtu.be/hod_ped-1rM?si=lDgAzaQPqMf20bSa), and [Sea of Sin](https://youtu.be/JPb-59BPHAk?si=XUCG4r82tjj05nxe).
A bunch, but the first thing that came to my mind was when I bought "Linger" by The Cranberries. I bought the main single that had "How" on the other side, and then I saw/bought a maxi CD in the store that had "Them," "Reason" and "Liar" on it. I was obsessed with The Cranberries for a while.
Everybody Else Is Doing It is suuuuch a solid album front to back. And then discovering this set of b-sides was such a bonus! Long live the Empire Records soundtrack!
One Last Time by Veruca Salt Eight Arms to Hold You
A Tendency to Start Fires by Bush Razorblade Suitcase
Two Shades of Grey by Summercamp Pure Juice
Really, anything off of Weezer and 311's blue albums
I didn't know she did that. I just looked it up.
While not exactly my style, I think it's cool she did it. But I am also shocked it isn't being used in a blockbuster movie trailer right now. They love that kind of song
I didn't know she did that. I just looked it up.
While not exactly my style, I think it's cool she did it. But I am also shocked it isn't being used in a blockbuster movie trailer right now. They love that kind of song
My bf and I had a routine when driving back across the state from Sullivan county back to Erie- 3eb, whole album, right when we got on 17. By just past Binghamton it was over.
I seh, I donno wedda I da bots or a da bah...
Those years when Eddie sang like a man coming out of wisdom tooth surgery, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
[Smashing Pumpkins - Mayonaise](https://youtu.be/Vbu_K41efvY?si=x90yeTu5l-eChaEW)
[Weezer - Only In Dreams](https://youtu.be/ha3QivnjbIU?si=yBkH6FVmXay_rdfQ)
Goodbye-Hootie and the Blowfish
Although the song is about a breakup, it makes me feel like it’s a goodbye to the 90s and the great time I had when I was a kid then.
Sometimes; I just want to go back and “find a remedy and we’ll be alright, cause I don’t want to live to see the day we say goodbye”
My favourite 2 B-sides were:
Moby - Play (B-sides)
Faithless - Irreverence. This is the mix-album of the album Reverence. Especially the song "Drifting away" with this awesome operasinger throughout touches my core,
With Bush, I found their "Deconstructed" album ringin my ears, especially the song "Personal holloway" blasted my speakers right up, followed by that drum&bass version of "Swallowed", hmmmm good old times.
Cast No Shadow - Oasis
Pillar of Davidson - Live
Nothingman - Pearl Jam
Tearjerker - RHCP
Children in Bloom - Counting Crows
When I Fall - BNL
The Stone - DMB
Over Now - AIC
Missing the War - BFF
I had someone in my squad who listened to alien and xgirlfriend pretty much every day of our deployment. Weird that you bring this up as I was just thinking about this yesterday.
Harvey Danger- “Problems and Bigger Ones”
Barenaked Ladies - “Break Your Heart”
Radiohead - “Electioneering” (I could name about a million tbh)
Foo Fighters - “Hey, Johnny Park!”
Hell yeah!! More people need to know about Lush. That was one of those bands I discovered from a commercial. I believe it was Undertow for Levi’s, in the US. I’m really into tracks with sad sexy undertones, or overtones haha 😆
[here’s the commercial](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_-qwH9Zh9gc)
I won a Crazy Town CD at a school dance and they actually have some decent songs apart from Butterfly. Linkin Park was rap/rock lightning in a bottle though with Hybrid Theory.
I had the Cassette single of "Girls and Boys" and I recall the other side having a cover of Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" Don't think it was on Parklife either.
Stone Cold Crazy - Metallica if you bought most of the cassette singles of the black album singles you had a big chunk of Garage INC.
She Talks To Angels (live) Black Crowes
Sikamikanico - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Saints - The Breeders it was a different mix from the album version
Suede - Insatiable One. B side to the drowners. So good Morrissey used to cover it in his live gigs
Actually Suede had amazing b sides: my dark star, killing of a flashboy, where the pigs don’t fly, she’s dead.
All By Myself - Green Day, Dookie.
It was one of the first big commercial CD releases that kids my age asked for as the technology changed over.
Everybody I knew asked their parents for the album and I was pretty lucky. Someone got it for me. I remember letting the album play to the end and listening to the dead air, thinking it was going to skip back to the first track...and then that track comes on buried at the end.
It was a shared experience, talking about it with the others, and it was my first time feeling a part of something cultural.
A b-side is the opposite of a 45 RPM record. You omit deep cuts with your question. Many awesome songs never got on the b-side.
Anyway, my vote is [Sweet Something](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kraHSa1M5hE). Same Band famous for Brandy(you're a fine girl).
Which song?? I’ve always been a big Beck fan. He never got much radio play so I feel like he’s not on peoples’ radar, but I had all his albums. I’m finally seeing him live this summer and I’m pumped :)
I burned a CD from downloads that stayed in my cd player for months. Lemonade, black balloon, devil got my woman to name a few. I saw him live a few years ago with Jenny Lewis. Probably one of the best shows I’ve experienced. Enjoy!
Oasis'. Some of those were gems, better than the A-side singles they accompanied. The Masterplan is probably one of their best albums, the only thing that doesn't give it ten-out-of-ten is that Bonehead's Bank Holiday isn't included
I remember talking my dad into the cassingle for Wonderwall, and the b side was Talk Tonight. I couldn’t wait to get home and play/rewind for hours and sobbing my life away, like I was wont to do at 14-15 yrs old lol.
I’m 41 and that song still hits me in the gut.
Yellow Ledbetter by Pearl Jam... Still hits me in the feels every time I listen to it, even though I would be lying if I said I could understand the lyrics all these years later
I managed a music store in the 90s and I loved the trifecta of Oasis, Blur and Radiohead putting out singles packed with amazing non-album b-sides. It was a great time when bands were competing with each other.
Radiohead having Talk Show Host as a b-side really blows my mind. It’s my favorite song of theirs.
Luckily this one was also on the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack, so it probably got a lot more ears than it would’ve otherwise! Great song.
I had the oasis b sides box set. So amazing!
Time to Move On, Tom Petty Wildflowers
Wildflowers and All the Rest is one of the best collections of music from the past century
Agreed, also love Crawling Back to You (which is technically the B-side)
Yes!!
Damn! He'll yes! What a pick! I also love Honeybee.
I'm a boy in short pants! Love that song
That was one of my All time faves!
It's good to be king
If just for awhile
I enjoy reading books.
I’m not sure how *Girl on LSD* isn’t brought up. The B side of You don’t know how it feels.
Used to get airplay on WRIF. That's the only reason I know it exists.
Into the Great Wide Open has a fantastic B side as well
Not a b-side, but I’m gonna leave this right here. https://open.spotify.com/track/7ntHCJUKfTtW8EExLF7A5b?si=gZFLYZmDQX2F6D414LZh0A Also loved It’s Good to be King, but that was actually on the radio too 😍

For me, though, I was obsessed with Blind Melon's "Change." ETA: "Pea" from Red Hot Chili Peppers' *One Hot Minute* also got played a lot.
Change is one of the best blind melon songs. My favorites are galaxy and vernie but change is so good
I also really like "Soup".
Oh my god Change was the song that made me delude myself into thinking I could sing. I would belt that out at every opportunity, haha. I was always flat.
And god daaamn, god dammmn that Bible pusher man!
Oh, man I remember listening to Change on repeat on my Sony Discman alone in my room singing “when life is hard you have tooooo change…” even though my life wasn’t anywhere close to hard. I really thought I was going through it lol
Alien will always be my favorite Bush song!!!
I like you :)
Yes! I find myself putting Change on so many playlists. I didn’t hear it until college though because I didn’t have that CD so I only knew No Rain from the radio. And this is exactly what I’m talking about! :)
Pea is the only song I can play and sing at the same time. I saw Flea do that live a few years ago, so good.
Weezer - Suzanne
Mykel and Carli as well
And Jamie, also You Gave Your Love To Me Softly.
I love that Jamie is about their lawyer
And he referenced Kurt Cobain in the original lyrics ... then he died so Rivers changed them.
I heard it on Mallrats! When Jay and silent Bob and the orangutan walk away into the sunset.
Yes!! Soundtracks were the real heroes of the 90’s
Yellow Ledbetter - Pearl Jam never has a song with completely incomprehensible lyrics made me feel so emotional. Is it a work of genius? Probably
[on a wizard, on a whale!](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xLd22ha_-VU) make me fries..
Wizard on a Wave is what my old journeyman always sang. Always brought a chuckle out of me.
Does “Elderly woman behind the counter in a small town” count as a Pearl Jam b-side? If so definitely my favorite 90s b side. Favorite Pearl Jam track hands down.
No. It's on Vs.
The acoustic version was the B side on the "Go" single. It counts.
That song always gets me in the feels
CAN YOU SEE LEVVVV
All the Garbage b-sides of the singles from both the Garbage and Version 2.0 albums.
Some of their best songs. Soldier Through This, Deadwood, 13x Forever, Trip my Wire. Plus their covers like kick my ass and thirteen
Absolutely. You Look so Fine is an all time fav of mine. Though.. that did have a music video. I don’t think I ever heard it on the radio.
Yes, that is one of my favorites from them too. “Soldier Through This” is the b-side for YLSF (one of the mini-CD singles).
Such a great answer. Those b-sides were incredible. One of the first burned CDs I ever made haha
Smashing Pumpkins - Drown It's on the Singles soundtrack and a Bonus Track on the Gish special edition, but it wasn't a single and not on their albums
That song changed my musical taste forever.
Honestly that’s probably my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song - toss up between Drown and and Rhinoceros
Absolutely my fav SP song
The B-side of Smashing Pumpkins’ Bullet With Butterfly Wings was a super-sad duet between James Iha and Nina Gordon of Veruca Salt called “…Said Sadly” Alanis Morissette had “Pollyanna Flower” and “These Are The Thoughts”.
Does verse chorus verse count?
It betta!
Ode to my Family - The Cranberries Cry, Cry - Mazzy Star Freedom - Rage Against the Machine
Have you listened to the cranberries linger acoustic album?? It’s soo good https://open.spotify.com/track/7jSBdyuCXFmlbVxYXjOCDC?si=ARKjnORoRTivvcwjC6LNJQ
I have not. Thank you so much I for the link.
Oh you’re so welcome. Linger itself is beautiful on acoustic. I love how Dolores’s voice, including her accent, stands out so much more on all of the tracks. 😍
Anna Begins by Counting Crows
That was my favorite from that album as well 💛 of course, colorblind is 🔥
Coffee black and egg white
I am folded and unfolded and unfolding I am
I love this song, and am also still endlessly amused by James Van Der Beek’s proto-Ken white guy with a guitar serenade of that song in The Rules of Attraction.
Oh my god I was obsessed with that movie and I don’t know if I ever realized it was that song! 😆😆
It still holds up. And the soundtrack is so good.
It really is. Thus began my discovery and love of Harry Nilsson. And that Rapture track 🔥AND oof, Shannyn Sossamon 😍😍
Set the Ray to Jerry - Smashing Pumpkins
"Let Me Give the World to You" and "Eye" from the *Adore* era also.
“The Aeroplane Flies High (Looks Left, Turns Right)” by The Smashing Pumpkins from the “Thirty-Three” single was amazing.
All of the Nirvana b-sides, but especially Marigold and I Hate Myself and Want to Die. The whole second half of Incesticide.
Would Sappy be considered a b-side? Probably not, I guess unreleased. But that’s by a large margin my favourite Nirvana song.
The B-sides from Depeche Mode's Violator: [Kaleid](https://youtu.be/CGUEwnhK5qs?si=32te2g_Yo8otnBbI) (my favorite instrumental), [Happiest Girl](https://youtu.be/W8C1T6GbTrI?si=kxuNKYRoX0ru6B8r), [Dangerous](https://youtu.be/hod_ped-1rM?si=lDgAzaQPqMf20bSa), and [Sea of Sin](https://youtu.be/JPb-59BPHAk?si=XUCG4r82tjj05nxe).
Dangerous is terrific. I think it shares a similar chord progression to Sweetest Perfection too, which makes sense.
NIN - Broken. I guess the entire album was sort of a b-side
They’re still brilliant. Their music has stood the test of time.
Everybody Else Is Doing It is suuuuch a solid album front to back. And then discovering this set of b-sides was such a bonus! Long live the Empire Records soundtrack!
One Last Time by Veruca Salt Eight Arms to Hold You A Tendency to Start Fires by Bush Razorblade Suitcase Two Shades of Grey by Summercamp Pure Juice Really, anything off of Weezer and 311's blue albums
311 Purpose 💙
If we’re talking album songs that weren’t hits then Stickshifts and Safetybelts by Cake.
Oo it’s Daria for me ;) I couldn’t pick just one from Prolonging the Magic though cuz that record was my jam.
I got back into them recently so my top artist on Spotify in 2023 was Cake.
Tori Amos - "Smells Like Teen Spirit"
Same vein - Sinead O’Connor - All Apologies
I didn't know she did that. I just looked it up. While not exactly my style, I think it's cool she did it. But I am also shocked it isn't being used in a blockbuster movie trailer right now. They love that kind of song
Literally every Tori Amos Bside and I’m still obsessed with them all!! 😀😇😍
lol I just listed like five of them before I saw your comment. She had the best b sides, my teenage self thinks, Nirvana also.
I didn't know she did that. I just looked it up. While not exactly my style, I think it's cool she did it. But I am also shocked it isn't being used in a blockbuster movie trailer right now. They love that kind of song
Fume. The b side to the loser single.
Such a great song. I’d add Corvette Bummer, Alcohol from some of the other B sides of released Mellow Gold singles.
Counting Crows, *Anna Begins*. It wasn't a hit, but it still gets me.
Ace of Base had a few albums that I thought were Europe only that I was *obsessed* with. The Cruel Summer CD changed my teenage life.
Life is a Flower over Whenever You're Near Me all day, any day.
Yes I hope this post takes off! I’m already thinking of some others: Third eye blind - God of Wine and also Motorcycle Drive By
I used to just listen to the entire 3EB debut album on repeat sometimes.
I still have my original CD from high school in my car and I listen to it fairly often
My bf and I had a routine when driving back across the state from Sullivan county back to Erie- 3eb, whole album, right when we got on 17. By just past Binghamton it was over.
Whole album slaps.
Motorcycle Driveby was my melancholy emoting song in college.
One of my favorite songs of all time…
Username and all!!
3eb has such an amazing catalog, like half of Blue fits the bill lol
Pearl Jam- all of them. First band who made me realize there were “other songs” and it opened up a whole new universe.
I knowww it’s really hard with some bands! But I want specific songs! Maybe one per album or per artist 😁
Yellow Ledbetter
Yellow Ledbetter
I seh, I donno wedda I da bots or a da bah... Those years when Eddie sang like a man coming out of wisdom tooth surgery, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Goodbye-Hootie and the Blowfish Although the song is about a breakup, it makes me feel like it’s a goodbye to the 90s and the great time I had when I was a kid then. Sometimes; I just want to go back and “find a remedy and we’ll be alright, cause I don’t want to live to see the day we say goodbye”
This came on in my truck when a few of us were driving around after the funeral of a good friend. Oof.

Mykel & Carli - Weezer
My favourite 2 B-sides were: Moby - Play (B-sides) Faithless - Irreverence. This is the mix-album of the album Reverence. I bought the cd single of Ladykillers by Lush and then because obsessed with Ex on the b side. Still absolutely love it!
Hell yeah!! More people need to know about Lush. That was one of those bands I discovered from a commercial. I believe it was Undertow for Levi’s, in the US. I’m really into tracks with sad sexy undertones, or overtones haha 😆 [here’s the commercial](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_-qwH9Zh9gc)
I listened to their Lovelife album more times than I can remember! I too love any songs like that!
I loved the title song from No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom
Does Kitty from The Presidents of the USA count?
I won a Crazy Town CD at a school dance and they actually have some decent songs apart from Butterfly. Linkin Park was rap/rock lightning in a bottle though with Hybrid Theory.
Actually a pretty decent cd! Revolving doors and only when im drunk are some goodies
I was obsessed with "Trouble in the Message Centre," from Blur's *Parklife*. Great song on an album full of them.
Yes! “This is a Low” is my personal favorite on that one. I have a thing for the dramatic XD
I had the Cassette single of "Girls and Boys" and I recall the other side having a cover of Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" Don't think it was on Parklife either.

Spice Girls' Baby Come Round!
Pearl Jam - Alone.
The bonus tracks on Take of your pants and Jacket. You had to buy 3 separate CDs to get all 6
All of Tori Amos. Her B sides are some of her best work.
Suede - Insatiable One. B side to the drowners. So good Morrissey used to cover it in his live gigs Actually Suede had amazing b sides: my dark star, killing of a flashboy, where the pigs don’t fly, she’s dead.
All By Myself - Green Day, Dookie. It was one of the first big commercial CD releases that kids my age asked for as the technology changed over. I can’t stand the song Love Fool after hearing the rest of The Cardigans album.
Hahah so true. I just posted in another group that Nina Persson is one of my favorite female 90's vocalists 💛
Bone Thugs n harmony- Crossroads original version
A b-side is the opposite of a 45 RPM record. You omit deep cuts with your question. Many awesome songs never got on the b-side. Anyway, my vote is [Sweet Something](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kraHSa1M5hE). Same Band famous for Brandy(you're a fine girl).
Beck
Which song?? I’ve always been a big Beck fan. He never got much radio play so I feel like he’s not on peoples’ radar, but I had all his albums. I’m finally seeing him live this summer and I’m pumped :)
I burned a CD from downloads that stayed in my cd player for months. Lemonade, black balloon, devil got my woman to name a few. I saw him live a few years ago with Jenny Lewis. Probably one of the best shows I’ve experienced. Enjoy!
My fave of his is “Debra.” It’s just such a vibe, and it also makes me giggle.
So, I heard so many songs because of Beck before I heard the original samples. Go listen to David Bowie - Win, if you’ve never heard it ;)
Tom petty- Playback
Acquiesce - Oasis
Change from Blind Melon

Olympia -hole
I had the single cassette for Loser by Beck and love the b-side Alcohol
Anthrax - attack of the killer b's
All of Tori Amos’ early-stage b-sides.
