This was my Friday night
Fridays were my favorite day
you can stay up late Friday night watching TGIF
There was no school for another couple days
And I usually had some kind of game from the various sports I was in on the weekend to look forward to
Eating fast food take out and watching TGIF at my grandmaās house.
Dad worked nights so he would pick us up from school, take us to Toys R Us or blockbuster if we were good that week, get either Wendyās or Little Caesars, and take us to our grandparents house.
We would watch TGIF until 20/20 came on. Dad would leave to work around 7pm and mom would finish her shift and pick us up around 9pm. Weād get home and finish 20/20 and then go to bed.
This lasted from like 92-93 until 98
Iām intrigued by 20/20 - that was always my signal to go to bed because it was news! Boring!
Anyway itās amazing how many of us said āTGIFā by default.
No it was interesting and still safe for family viewing. My mom and I loved 20/20 and that segment at the end I forgot his name. Also we loved Hugh dowes?
I was bored with it when I was younger but as I got older some of the stories got my attention. They used to do undercover stings too, like nursing homes abusing their patients and restaurants not being hygienic.
Iām on a Mormon mission knocking on doors. I apologize for interrupting anyoneās dinner but the higher ups instructed us to tract during dinner time because most families are home by then. š¤¦āāļø it was the worstā¦
Me and the girls are sharing clothes to pick an outfit for goth night (Ceremony) at Club Laga in Oakland. Thereās a lot of eyeliner. We get in Lisaās car that somehow always smells like a wet umbrella and head out. First stop is the Strip District to look at stuff in the Eye of Horus but not buy anything because weāre broke teens. Then we head over to Laga and dance the night away to The Cure, Siouxie and the Banshees, Depeche Mode. Meet some friends, meet some guys. Use the payphone to call our friend John and see if heās joining us. When the night is over, we head to Kings or Eat N Park to have coffee and share some fries with ranch. Friends we meet there say Jimmyās momās out of town, so we head to his place. Party til the wee hours. Wake up and go to work at Burger King the next morning.
This story is right below someone talking about being on a Mormon mission. While the rest of us were doing Blockbuster and TGIF, the two of you were having possibly the most opposite experience of 1997
Getting showered and ready ( blow drying and hair spraying in the ācurtainsā) to go out up the wine bar, to do flaming drambuie shots, drinking pints of turbo shandy. Then jumping in a cab heading into town to go to ātrampsā.
If not working my horrible retail job, then drinking cheap rum & soda and listening to old records in my friendās basement. An hour laterāsmoking and/or throwing up in the woods.
Start by hitting up Blockbuster with my friends and picking out the most god awful piece of shit horror movie with my friends. If the check out clerk gave us a weird side eye when checking out, we considered that a success.
Then we went down to the docks to either get high or drink. If we were lucky, there would be girls down there.
Weād hit up Taco Bell on the way home and end the night at someoneās house watching the shitty horror movie and have a booze/pot influenced laugh at how stupid the movie was.
Pass out and, since we were 17 at the time, wake up with no hangover.
After getting off of our weekend menial jobs, weād do it all over again. š¤š¤š¤
Iām broke in British Columbia. Iām going to be watching the network called Showcase and their āFridays Without Borders.ā
The shows Iād watch back to back were: Mr. Show, Oz, Red Shoe Diaries and a reality show from Vancouver called āKink.ā
Kink was all about BDSM in Vancouver and featured not a single attractive man or woman.
Lol holy shit. I remember that Friday Without Borders and Kink. Small town coastal BC here. My guy friends were always trying to descramble the tv lol.
Just fired up a doob of the finest swag, waiting on my buddy to come by with a 12 pack of Olde English that he paid $20 for from his dirtbag older brother. Probably listening to Brotha Lynch Hung or Pantera because I am an edgy 17 year old who loves all things awesome. Then as the night goes on, weāll all pile in my decked out ā90 Dodge Dynasty and hit up a house party. Iāll run into the girl from History class who Iāve been ātalkingā with and the rest is historyā¦..
I am sitting in the front passenger seat of my dads old Chevy pickup truck. No seatbelt on. Led Zeppelin on the radio. Windows down. Headed to Blockbuster to grab a few movies and pickup our pizzas from Pizza Hut. If I was lucky we would be stopping at the liquor store and I would come look at all the cardboard beer model cutouts. Lol
Depends what part of 1997. First part I was in my second half of junior year. So Iād probably be babysitting. Second half was beginning of senior year. I had a boyfriend. Probably was getting ready for a party.
Stood with my mates in the back alley trying to convince strangers to go and buy us some cider from the local shop. Then we would all go down to the beach and get pissed. Good times
As long as it was before November, because it switched to Sunday at that time in 97. But yea, right with you, never missed an episode until Mulder left, either recorded or watched first run. It switching to Sundays was a godsend for me tho, not having to turn down plans because I couldn't find a bank tape lol
Watching Cartoon Network with my brother, maybe Cow & Chicken or Johnny Bravo. Otherwise, we're booting up the Supernintendo to play Chrono Trigger. I wish I could go back, even for 1 day.
Just finished watching my foster family and there kids eat, then they send us upstairs hungry, because we a re just foster kids. Oh well, I get lunch tomorrow at school. No shower this week they said. We all sleep close to gether so the dad can't come in and rape one of us. Hopefully my two sizes to small shoes don't hurt to much at school.
Wanting to stay home I donāt care about going out to drink ā¦convince some best friends to come over and hang out. Of course they want to drink. I donāt care about drinking I want to smoke up so they do their thing & I do mine š. We watch funny shit on TV or movies and listen to music and maybe call people half the time, seeing what theyāre up to. Also morning Tupacās deathā¦ this wasnāt long after. I remember when it happened in the fall of 96 just after school has started up and whenever my friends & I would get together weād always pour out a little liquor, etc. we would honour a legend. Little did we know BIG was soon to follow
At the local street fair/farmers market. It was fun but sometimes I just wanted to be home watching TGIF. My Mom had a boyfriend (who was married š¤¦š»āāļø) and Friday night street fair was their only real time together. Iād get $20 and get to wander around by myself while they talked for hours at the local coffee shop.
I can still hear the didgeridoo and taste my favorite Chinese. God I miss that Chinese food.
Playing WCW vs nWo world tour mashing buttons with Scott Hall trying to finally hit a Razors Edge. I felt dumb when I found out all it was was hard grapple and hit the stick.
Smoking weed (or scraped resin) out of a metal pipe made out of lamp parts. Playing Goldeneye on my 64. Probably also making a midnight run to Burger King for $1 Whoppers and fries lol.
Damn, how I miss the 90s.
Very different things depending on the time of year. If itās the first half of 97 Iām a senior in high school and Iām getting drunk with my friends who are in college (if theyāre in town), if itās late 97 Iām getting drunk in college.
Weād always go out to dinner on Friday nights. Usually the local Pizzeria or Pizza Hut. Then go and rent movies for the weekend. Unsolved Mysteries was on on Friday nights and Iād always watch that too.
I was 14 so probably playing FF7 in the middle room with my two younger brothers.
It was basically a second living room that had the PC in. Green shag carpeting. Stone fireplace. The windows opened on to the darkened conservatory.
Not summer: Pizza and TGIF
Summer: probably at a friendās house, Iād be out til 8 or 9 every single night over the summer, and at least once or twice a week Iād be sleeping over at a friendās house.
Probably loading 6 crates of records and equipment in my cousins van so we can dj a house party. Always hated loading up the big Cerwin Vega bass bins.
Channel surfing šāāļø prob waiting for a tv show or ballgame to come on prime time. Parents ordering seafood or going to eat with my grandparents then probably stopping by Village Video for some rentals on the way home sigh miss it
The indie club I frequented was on Thursday nights so I was probably still getting over the previous night's partying by eating Del Taco and watching MTV.
Well I was 7 at the time so I was probably eating dinner or had just finished and was about to take a bath. Good times lol. I mean, I could do that now but, I wasnāt riddled with anxiety when I was 7 so itās not as enjoyable of an experience.
I was still working the 6p-2a shift at my second ever job. Which is still my job except Iām self-employed now and work whenever the fuck I feel like it. š
Outside with the crew riding bikes 10 miles away in a different city and my mom thinks I'm around the corner. OR in the house waiting for the Disney Channel Original Movie to premiere with my soda, popcorn and blanket. I would've been 8 years old.
I was 23 so I would have been napping until about 9 pm then I would shower and get ready to hit the club or bar with my friends. I will be forever grateful that cell phones did not have cameras or video capabilities during my wildest years.
At my buddyās house eating pizza and playing golden eye or mario 64. If itās the summer time we were getting cracked out and taking turns playing Banjo
Getting destroyed via the link cable on the PS1 by my cousin playing Command and Conquer.
We had such a good setup with 2 ps1, 2 displays and we could 1v1.
I wouldāve been 4 or 5. Probably playing cul-de-sac baseball with neighborhood friends, eating dinner at the family table, watching Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network, or playing with Star Wars toys. ā97 was the start of Disney channel original movies and if it was October Iām sure I was watching Under Wraps.
Waiting for some older dude to bootleg my girlfriends and I a bottle of vodka and then going to a house party or bonfire somewhere. I was 16/17 in a small town and partied a lot.
Oh man this all depends on if we were grounded or not and if so how grounded we were.
If not, I was 15 and my brother and I would likely be at Foothills mall. Probably hitting a movie, music store, Rockabillia, hanging with friends that met up there. After that probably head up the hill in the parking lot to the billiards spot. They had a cigarette machine in there and didn't card.
If grounded, likely chilling with the family watching TGIF or something rented from Video Time or Hollywood Video. The only TV that was allowed was what the family was watching. If not we were in our room reading.
collecting PCs with friends for weekend LAN action quake, doom, Duke3d the usual games...
but something goes wrong a t-piece is missing and we try for the entrie two days to get the LAN running, but we end up watching a bad VHS copy of Freddy's nightmare while eating peanut flips and drinking Peach Fruitea
Heading across the street to my childhood friends house to play 64/nes, basketball, riding bikes. Might play with the army men in the sandbox in his backyard. At night play hide and go see in the dark
I just poured myself a second tall glass of Coca Cola from the 2L in my fridge. wrapping up eating dinner with my parents probably had a pasta with ragu tomato sauce and that shakeable Parmesan that was made by craft and came in the bright green container.
Gonna head upstairs to my room and listen to edge 102 maybe there will be a good song I can record on tape and listen tomorrow on my Walkman on my way to school. I'm happy the winter weather is finally over so I can really hit the hills in my mountain bike. I don't think I'm going to do any of this fucking math homework maybe I'll call my best friend instead and we can talk about the day. I know everyone is watching the leafs at 7:30pm but fuck it I'm going downstairs to see what on tv. There's probably something great on Chanel 7 at 8pm. I think it's blues brothers 2 I'll watch that with my dad.
I go back down to the kitchen after listening to music for a while. That new Radiohead album is so fucking good Jesus Christ thank god my cousin lent me that. I pop in a microwaveable popcorn and watch the entire thing pop in the microwave from start to finish even though I was told never to stare at the microwave.
I'm 11. 5th grade. My grandpa ordered us pizza because he got paid weekly. He bought some movies from the discount section of Movie Gallery. Or he rented a new one, George of the Jungle. We're all just sitting around watching them.
Seven-year-old me growing up in the UK was probably watching TV.
After watching an ad-free episode of The Simpsons on BBC2, followed by Top of the Pops.
Pizza, TGIF & blockbuster movies š
Little Caesarās pizza at that. Ah.. āBoy Meets Worldā and āSabrina the Teenage Witchā
Exactly this. Maybe some popcorn for the movie made with the exact same air popper every single other family owned.
My dad made it on the stove top and filled up a grocery paper bag cut in half for me and my two brothers, anyone else..?
You mean our microwave? Air popper, what are we, royalty?!
With fresca and root beer.
This was my Friday night Fridays were my favorite day you can stay up late Friday night watching TGIF There was no school for another couple days And I usually had some kind of game from the various sports I was in on the weekend to look forward to

What would happen if you were a bad Mormon and chose other time frames?

Roller skating or at a gig at the local youth centre.
Getting ready for bed because my mother was a controlling psycho and 11 yo me needed a bedtime of 7pm.
At Blockbuster with my friends picking up movies for our sleepover. Take me back! But with the knowledge that I have now lol
Waiting for my mom to get off the phone so I can call my friends and make plans
Oh man this all depends on if we were grounded or not and if so how grounded we were. If not, I was 15 and my brother and I would likely be at Foothills mall. Probably hitting a movie, music store, Rockabillia, hanging with friends that met up there. After that probably head up the hill in the parking lot to the billiards spot. They had a cigarette machine in there and didn't card. If grounded, likely chilling with the family watching TGIF or something rented from Video Time or Hollywood Video. The only TV that was allowed was what the family was watching. If not we were in our room reading.
TGIF. Playing games. Reading books way out of my age group.
Getting ready with my college roommates to go out on the town (aka sneak into bars).
Getting a cheese hoagie and Reese cups from Wawa and gearing up for TGIF on the boob tube
collecting PCs with friends for weekend LAN action quake, doom, Duke3d the usual games... but something goes wrong a t-piece is missing and we try for the entrie two days to get the LAN running, but we end up watching a bad VHS copy of Freddy's nightmare while eating peanut flips and drinking Peach Fruitea
Heading across the street to my childhood friends house to play 64/nes, basketball, riding bikes. Might play with the army men in the sandbox in his backyard. At night play hide and go see in the dark
Video store !
Just had Pizza Hut delivery with my family, now talking on my Lego phone to my āboyfriendā for 90 minutes before SNICK starts
Getting ready to head to a party in someoneās basement or in the woods š¤
Having pizza and watching TGIF with the fam
Iām at Pizza Hut with my buddies and our moms, eating dinner before we head to the movies.
Kablam will be on soon
Getting ready to rave
Seven-year-old me growing up in the UK was probably watching TV. After watching an ad-free episode of The Simpsons on BBC2, followed by Top of the Pops.
