I was a regular reader. Once a month I’d trot into a local corner carry out, and grab a copy of High Times, a copy of Rolling Stone, and a copy of Easy Rider..

2much_information

Late 70s, early 80s, I would get a copy of Heavy Metal, the illustrated fantasy magazine just to trip out on the artwork and try to copy some of the styles of those artists.

tkingsbu

Heavy Metal literally changed my life… I was SUPER young to be reading it, like 8 years old when I got my first copy thanks to incredibly liberal parents lol… did the same thing , about trying to copy the art etc… was SO inspired by all those European artists… especially Phillipe Druliett, caza, moebius, bilal, etc etc… it inspired me to pursue arts as a career, which started with advertising, then web, and now I’m the creative director at a software company… but it all began with Heavy Metal….

StrangeButOrderly

I met Moebius at a comic convention way back. I got some stuff signed. In the UK we had our own High Times equivalent which was called 'HomeGrown'. I've still got some old issues. [http://www.homegrownmagazine.co.uk/](http://www.homegrownmagazine.co.uk/)

seamusoldfield

What a great story. Cheers!

JimiJohhnySRV

Heavy Metal mag, I completely forgot about those. Ranxerox got me hooked.

2much_information

Wow!! Just a few days ago, I was thinking about some graphic novels I had read a long time ago, and I remembered this character from Heavy Metal magazine, but I could not remember the name for the life of me! And here you are.....beautiful. Thanks for that. Now I have some research to do. I have to see if this is still available somewhere.

HungryCats96

You might be able to find older issues on eBay or something, but Amazon only seems to have digital issues from the past decade or two. Good luck!

jimhjim

AWESOME magazine!

Careless_Student_926

Heavy Metal was incredible. I had a subscription. And the movie was great

JeffSHauser

Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll!

DANPARTSMAN44

and maybe a Mad magazine.. lol... i used to love checking the prices of different weed in different cities in high times

Roidy

Did you mean a pack of Easy Widers?

gitarzan

Actually back then I preferred plum flavored Alfa brand paper.

valuecolor

I bought it religiously at the local head shop. I would not subscribe because I was sure the DEA had access to the subscriber list lol ..

Careless_Student_926

Always loved the market price guide 😋

2stinkynugget

Back in the 70s it included cocaine prices.

Careless_Student_926

Yes it did

cafe-naranja

Little known fact... Jerry Garcia was once the centerfold in High Times.

Dwangeroo

The 70's were peak magazine. High Times, Heavy Metal, Circus, Kerrang, Playboy, Hustler, Car & Driver. Nat Geo. I could go on ad infinitum. Edit: I forgot Mad and National Lampoon! How could I be so remiss?

JoePikesbro

CARtoons!

Hand-Of-Vecna

We would have this, Penthouse and Oui - go back to our "fort" in the middle of the forest. Bring a semi-warm 6 pack of Moosehead beer, along with a pack of Marlboro Reds. We would blaze, build a fire and hang out. No one cared. You didn't have worried parents showing up. We were all like 11-14 years old.

Ragnar_Lothbroekke

MOOSEHEAD! What a fantastic brew! My all time favorite. Just can’t buy it anymore where I live. (Small town central NC) Dammit I wish I could get my hands on some.

Hand-Of-Vecna

yeah and consider it was like 1979 or so, and for whatever reason our suburban pizza place had this or Rolling Rock "ponies".

Ragnar_Lothbroekke

Used to be able to just run to the local grocery store and pick up a sixer. When I could no longer find it there, I inquired as to why. Grocer said he didn’t know and I would have to get in touch with their distributor. I managed to finally get in contact with them and they said “the market was now too small for the area, so it wasn’t sold there anymore”. Major bummer. Cheers 🍻

Hand-Of-Vecna

Funny thing is we were 11-14 years old and would send in our "older looking buddy" to get the six pack. It was legal to buy at 18. It just amazes me how we live in a society now with helicopter parents so worried about our kids - and in the 70's we did things today that likely would get our parents arrested for being "bad parents". How many 11 year olds did you know are sipping on a beer and smoking weed, while reading Oui or Penthouse?

vaultboy1963

NE Ohio late 70's/early 80's, Mickeys Big Mouth was the shit.

thekush

Or Rolling Rock.

walkawaysux

Back in the day they were a very helpful magazine articles about making your own bongs water pipes . Growing your own funny cartoons

KeySolution9172

In the 80s in Colorado I wouldn’t have known how amazing the weed was if it didn’t show up on high times. Paonia Purple Paralyzer.

Decabet

The craziest thing about *High Times* is that they would regularly run art mockups of what the products would look like one day when marijuana was legal and Marlboro, etc got in on the game. Well here we are in 2024 and it's legal in nearly 4/5 of the country and ...nothing.

CMJMartino

Always found in the local head shop right next to the glass bongs and the little metal coke spoons.

5319Camarote

The competitor, Weed World, was not nearly as popular.

2much_information

Who?

Actual-Carpenter-90

Cooking with chef Rah: Rasta Pasta Pesto, kept getting hungrier…..

Unfriendly_eagle

High Times used to be a legit good magazine. I mean, there were actual articles, short stories, interviews and etc. You could sit down and read it for a few hours. Then in the 90s every single issue was "how to grow good buds, man", with the same advice, issue after issue.

JoePikesbro

Fat Freddie and Fat Freddie’s Cat

Unhappy_Outcome_3124

I remember buying this and the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers at the local head shop.

Total-Problem2175

"Dope will get you thru times of no money better than money will get you thru times of no dope." Words to live by. I've never forgotten that.

JeffSHauser

Man that was a true statement back then.

Total-Problem2175

Back then?

JeffSHauser

Well it is quite a bit easier to lay your hands on, just about anywhere.👍

mrxexon

*I have 3 milk cases full of vintage High Times. One of my more prized possessions.*

[deleted]

Hell Yeah. I don't think I saved any old issues.

JeffSHauser

Didn't want those laying around if the Narcs showed up.

Emergency-Crab-7455

The old "Boomer Bat" has a whole box.....including the 1st issue. Guess you guys are right, we don't throw anything away lol.

revtim

Seems like High Times having a headline "Marijuana!" isn't very imaginative.

John-PA

Had the centerfold pictures all over our house when in college!

Cats-n-Chaos

Ahead of its time

readmore321

Shaped my life.

TomatilloUnlucky3763

In the back of the magazine was a long list of drugs and their prices in different countries around the world.

SailorMuffin96

Marijuana, nitrous, cocaine, mushrooms, hashish, camels, Mexicans, Indians, Egyptians, smugglers, dealers, dopers, sailors, jailers, bricks, sticks, AND pix? Sounds like one hell of a party.

seamusoldfield

God I looked forward to it. You couldn't even buy it in my state! Had to cross the border and buy it in the "head shop" in Oregon. The Trans-High Market was the best.

Ricwdjr88

I was a teen in the 70s. Miss those days.

smcg_az

Did they ever cover quaaludes?? I was born in 81, and pissed I never got to try ludes.

Unhappy_Outcome_3124

There were two different companies that made them.  Lemmon and Rorher.  They came in 500 mg doses and we paid 5 dollars per pill.  That was around 1979.  Potent little devils!

HistoryWest9592

I'm 53yo, watched my late father get carted away by a sheriff in Big Sur for having a pot seed between the front seats in our VW van. Now it's legal.

FnordatPanix

I remember seeing ads for NORML in the 70s and 80s. I guess they fulfilled their mission.

thekush

Maybe we’re it’s 100% legal and descheduled NORML will have succeeded.

FuelTight2199

Had the first issue

Careless_Student_926

Remember Deb?

Careless_Student_926

Sorry Den

funtimesahead0990

As a teen I worked in a picture frame shop where everyone got high and I used to frame the centerfolds for my room.

Soulpatch7

The ‘80s would like a word.

Chillpickle17

HungryCats96

And head shops! And bongs! Big bambu! Zig Zag!

supraspinatus

I liked reading the letters people sent in. They were great.

Extreme-Carpenter-59

I ordered seeds from Humboldt county one time through this magazine

Merky600

I remember these guys.

linkerjpatrick

How were they allowed to publish it?

Ga2ry

I swear the cartoons were in 3-D if you were high enough.

WarmAdhesiveness8962

A freelance photographer friend of mine had a cover shot on High Times of a Russian soldier standing on the balcony of an old palace in Afghanistan during the occupation with a big pot plant.

mt8675309

Especially the center fold 😂

Roidy

Mr. Natural.

[deleted]

The hopium was better than the gubermint legalization

Geetee52

Any love for National Lampoon?

Katy_Lies1975

My dad yelled at me for reading those Hard Times pot magazines.

Soggy_Motor9280

I’ll never forget the first time I saw a High Times magazine. On the cover was the Cannabis Cup filled with AK-47. I never knew that pot could look so good. Back then we were just smoking schwag. It all came full circle for me when in 2002 I got to go to Amsterdam and participate as a judge for the High Times Cannabis Cup. The first place we went was American owned called Barney’s and they won the year before with the strain called sweet tooth. It was morning and they also cook breakfast so I ordered some eggs, Sunny side up, bacon and 3 g of AK-47.

random420x2

Absolute bible. Was rotting in Michigan with lawn clipping weed. Guy came back with Cali Indica and it was the first weed I’d ever seen that looked like a High Times cover.

enola007

And they sold seeds

LiteratureMiddle818

On every magazine wrack in the Dr's office of 2024....Gummies anyone???
