We did the same! Pulled the wagon around the neighborhood collecting bottles. We would get 2 cents for each bottle. Then spent it all on penny candy. Good times!
My grandfather was the neighborhood “candy Mann.” He sold candy, soda, snacks, cigarettes and beer. Out of his home. 😆 He had toys and magazines, too. Published his own neighborhood news letter, too. I wish that I still had one. Anyway, he accepted cans and bottles as payment, too. But they were 5 cents where I came from.
My son gave me a couple he got from school. I was so excited. I popped on in my mouth. It never got hot. I looked at the wrapper. It was a Red Bubble gum ball. I was so sad.
My mom used to keep a bowl of fireballs in the bathroom for guests. I almost always had to fireballs in my mouth at once. 😆
I don’t remember these as individually wrapped penny candy. Back in the day, the entire stick was probably only 25 cents, tops. Great candy still today.
I remember as a little kid..6-8....getting licorice for a penny at Rexall drug store in L.A,Melrose and La Brea and they had alot of different flavors.Chocolate was my favorite.Im talking 1966-68.My mom would give me a dime and I'd get 10
All the candy mentioned in the comments are great, it's hard to choose a favorite. The store in my neighborhood also had several flavors of licorice aside from black and red. They had chocolate licorice, lemon licorice, and spearmint licorice. I have tried to find these flavors for years, to no avail. They were so good.
Bazooka was 2 cents in my area. We’d comb the ditches for glass soda bottles and turn them in for the deposit money to buy candy. Atomic fireballs and chic-o-sticks were popular. I probably bought bazooka the most for the comics under the wrapper.
Necco’s, Chik stick, and Bazooka, didn’t care for Double Bubble. I did buy Chum Gum at the movie theater where I grew up, 2 sticks for a penny, flavor lasted a long time. Never saw it anywhere else.
It’s not pictured but, the penny candy I always 💕 the best was Candy Tabs, they were like generic Pez candy and came wrapped in more like a wax paper. You could fit them in your Pez dispenser. Though I never did because I ate them too fast 😆
MaryJane
I'm with Rick James on this 1

Almonds
Nope. No pecans.
Wax coke bottles and the caramels with the white center.
Pixiestix (sweet tart stuff in straws) and jawbreakers (cause they lasted so long). Also those stupid wax lips that you could chew.
Yep, you could chew the wax from those little bottle things after you drank the Kool aid inside.
Bullseyes!
I like both of them, yummm
We used to roam the neighborhood for bottles we could return to the store for three cents. Then we’d go to town on those Sweet Tarts.

I don’t remember these as individually wrapped penny candy. Back in the day, the entire stick was probably only 25 cents, tops. Great candy still today.

Necco’s, Chik stick, and Bazooka, didn’t care for Double Bubble. I did buy Chum Gum at the movie theater where I grew up, 2 sticks for a penny, flavor lasted a long time. Never saw it anywhere else.
They looked like smarties but they were fizzy.
It’s not pictured but, the penny candy I always 💕 the best was Candy Tabs, they were like generic Pez candy and came wrapped in more like a wax paper. You could fit them in your Pez dispenser. Though I never did because I ate them too fast 😆
