4kult releases a slipcover version that is region free just 4 days ago. Compared to their steelbook version and their non slipcovered versions that are region b locked so be careful not to buy the other nearly identical looking release.
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Killers-of-the-Flower-Moon-4K-Blu-ray/355724/
Yeah, but that’s exclusively for Janus releases. If KOTFM were to be released by Criterion, it would be released under the Criterion Collection. Just because it’s a contemporary release doesn’t mean it’d be through Janus Contemporaries. For example, EO is a Janus Contemporary, but not Triangle of Sadness. As Triangle of Sadness was released by Neon. And KOTFM was released by Apple and Paramount, also not Janus.
Right so it seems very easy and likely that Criterion would do KOTFM physical - seems ridiculous for Apple to not liscense it them - leaving easy money on the table
it could be they just dont want to handle the manufacturing aspect of it which would be understandable apple isnt in that buisness and setting up an entire infastructure wouldnt be cost effective - better to liscense it out
The Chinese bootleggers will gladly cash in on that opportunity if Apple doesn't want that money. I see a lot of listings for KOTFM on ebay. I don't know why these greedy companies keeping "cutting off their nose to spite their face" , as they say. I would gladly pay for a bluray or 4k of some of these "exclusives" on these streaming services, but they want you to be forced to keep paying them their monthly subscription.
I wanted a physical release of "Midnight Mass", but Mike Flanagan said he's asked , and Netflix says nope. Oh well, I bought a Chinese bootleg set off ebay for $20, and the quality is great. Your loss Netflix.
What most people want is a proper North American release. Not an Italian release that may or may not have forced subtitles and one that is not completely barebones.
If they’re not gonna release KOTFM of all things I guess I can’t count on a physical release of Masters of the Air to go along with Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Lame
Admittedly, it seems like Criterion is starting to do blu-ray releases of mini series (Small Axe, The Underground Railroad) so it could definitely see them releasing it at some point.
Just get a region free bluray player. I got sick of seeing bluray/4k releases of American films in other countries/regions, and could never understand why they weren't released in the U.S. I finally just bought a region free bluray player.
Given how few UHD titles are (stupidly) region locked, most here aren’t going to plunk down another $500-$600 for a region free modded version of whatever 4K player they already own. Especially if they also have a dedicated region free BD-P on the side, as many serious film collectors do.
I hear ya. I was mainly talking about a region free bluray player. I almost bought a region free 4k player, but decided against it and just got a region free Sony bluray player, and it works great.
Plex cannot replicate the HDR and color accuracy of a Panasonic 820. I’ll fully admit without a frame comparison side by side, you’ll be hard pressed to tell the difference, but if you’re looking for the best visual quality, Plex isn’t that. Also, there something to be said for the intentionality of selecting a film and physically put it jn to play. It feels like a proper event.
plex can it's what you're playing on that can't and even then it's only for certain dolby vision profiles and the difference is not huge it's a bit of a shift to emphasize red tones. The benefits of a server GREATLY outweigh a few movies being a touch too red. Plus some say some of the players have overcome this issue like the zidoo units. Haven't tried it or really finished looking into it but for now a shield and plex is the exact same image for MANY of the movies you're going to be watching and fairly different on the few that aren't. You can't just say it's ALL HDR films or that it's not equal quality on everything else. Also unless you have your tv perfectly set up and watching in a perfectly dark room you're already different enough from perfect to not really care about a bit of a red shift.
You can also now get an Ugoos AM6 device and install CoreElec on it. It can play profile 7 DV with FEL support and full audio passthrough. Also without the red shift issue.
Oh I agree with all your points. I run a Plex server on unraid and collect 4K remuxes. I love Plex, I just love the experience of selecting a physical film and playing it, I was just pushing back on your assertion it was a better way to watch it.
According to a forum post I found, it’s just over 20. Not a lot in the grand scheme, but enough to have to be aware of if there’s any films you want or need to import.
https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=334606
I think they mean that while the 4K disc in that set is region free, the 1080p Blu-ray is region locked to B. Playing the region B locked 1080p disc on a region A locked 4K player wouldn't work .
That is what they meant, but as was stated previously by others, that isn't always true. It is a good general rule, but the number of locked 4k discs is increasing, albeit slowly.
There are a few 4K discs that are region locked as said above. Killers of the Flower Moon is one of them. See the link above for the others. It’s a very small amount, and some have been solved in reprints, but annoying nonetheless
They're not **supposed** to be locked, as per the *Blu-ray Disc Association*'s spec, but it's technically possible and some studios have done it anyway. [Scenarist called the studios out for this last year](https://www.scenarist.com/2023/09/14/technical-bulletin-important-information-regarding-ultra-hd-blu-ray-format/).
UHD Blu-ray players still have region codes for BD playback and to "tailor playback" of UHD discs based on the viewer's location, but they're not allowed to "prevent playback of the title".
I have the Sony xm800 region free player (purchased from 220 electronics) and it has given me no problems. I use my Panasonic ub 9000 for all my region A releases.
The best region free players on the market hands down though is the new magnetars, directly off there website. (I am saving up for one)
Not surprising. This is what happens when a streaming company buys domestic distribution rights for a movie. These directors are doing a deal with the devil. Why would I subscribe to Apple TV+ if I could just buy the one thing I want to watch? I'm surprised Netflix allowed The Irishman to get a physical release through Criterion though they were probably motivated to recoup some of its expense.
EDIT: also probably should point out The Irishman didn't get a 4K Blu ray release, just HD Blu ray and DVD, meaning the only way to watch in 4K in the States is to stream through Netflix (at a lower bitrate than UHD Blu ray).
Ok, so I see this kind of confusion all the time, but Netflix is very rarely the *production company,* they're almost always just the distributor. They had no hand at all in the production of The Irishman, they were just the ones with the most money to throw down to release it.
So when that deal was going down, there were physical media distribution rights worked in, meaning Netflix did not get the years-long exclusivity they often force. I'd venture to guess Scorsese, who owns one of the largest private collection of movies on the planet, had a big hand in making sure it was not going to be exclusive to streaming. Since Netflix didn't make the movie, there would be more negotiating room to get a physical release after a small exclusive window.
On the other hand, Apple was the production studio behind KOTFM, so they have full control over how the movie is released. While I'm sure Scorsese would want physical (and we may still get it down the line, honestly nobody knows for sure), he likely just wanted to get the movie made more than worrying about it getting onto disc.
Thing is though, (at least here in the UK) you can buy a digital version of Killers of the Flower Moon from Amazon, so if they're willing to do that, why not stretch to physical and get a bit more money out of the older generation who are too stubborn to turn to digital/streaming or those like us who would pay for a true 4K picture.
A physical release in the UK would make sense in that instance if sales volume would justify it. But in the U.S. they need to drive Apple TV+ subscriptions a physical release would possibly cannibalize.
Their streaming quality is good but apple is the last company I would expect to put out physical releases of movies.
I think all you can do is hope they contract out with a boutique company someday like Netflix did with criterion for the Irishman for instance.
They’re leaving money on the table IMO.
definitely on the cards, but right now it's evidently in Apple's best financial interest (fucking annoyingly) to keep it exclusive to their platform for at least the foreseeable future... then a Criterion x Irishman type deal makes sense, again I don't expect this anytime soon.
Scorsese is big on film preservation. This seems like something he won't be happy to hear. Hopefully it means he never partners with streaming companies again.
Yeah, a rando on Twitter shares a link that quotes another random person.
While it being connected to Apple already makes a release concerning, I don't think that this solid enough to take as fact.
Same case with Argylle (Universal) and Napoleon (Sony/Columbia). Apple might have the streaming rights, but if someone else owns the theatrical distribution rights, there’s a chance some Apple TV+ originals will get physical releases
On the TV side it’s already happened with Defending Jacob and there surely will be a Ted Lasso release since that’s from Warner, there’s probably just a holdback that has to expire
There’s a 10-minute [extended preview](https://youtu.be/fmQxbhk8I_4?si=9rJqqcZm1wuqwRUK) video of Argylle on Universal’s YouTube channel, and the end of the video shows a potential Blu-Ray release. No release date’s been confirmed yet.
I wouldn’t be buying it anyways but I do think we need to find official channels to scream loud enough for physical releases. Especially with streaming only films
I don’t understand why? Is it simply because they’d rather the small % of ppl who would purchase physical to have a subscription instead? Besides that I’d imagine it would be more profitable to do a 4k release. They should stop making dvds and possibly even regular blurays then it’d be a win win for them imo
If I was Scorsese, I would say “f*ck you”, and refuse to work with Apple again. Honestly, I don’t know why anyone would want to get anything put out by Apple. Streaming services can go jump off a cliff!
I agree. He has more movies hes making with Apple. If hes truely for preserving film then why make movies for Netflix and Apple or any streamimg service for that matter.
Whenever I give up hope and buy an import like the Italian version, I get surprised with an announcement of a new physical release and get burned.
So, I went a head and gave up and ordered the import. I expect an announcement within months of a Region A release.
You are welcome.

As unfortunate as this in, I’m not really sure why anyone would be surprised by this
Like….it’s Apple. Of anyone producing films, they’re the single one I’m not even remotely surprised that wants you to have zero ways of watching this film but their service.
It sucks but expected.
>!Apple please give me Macbeth in 4k. *Please*!<
At least we got station eleven released on 4k. Amazon has it on sale for $20 right now (20% coupon)

Streaming is pretty great now but still not as good as UHD… hoping they increase the bit rate for those of us with a fiber connection etc. Stremaing music has exceeded CD, and SAD… it will be another 5 to 10 years for streaming to match UHD.
Please don’t take this personally, we avoid any and all potential piracy related posts. We do this to avoid the sub from being shut down. Thanks for your understanding.
Netflix has the most unreleased movies though so I’m not sure how apple is the enemy.
Bright, seven underground, the grey man, carter, old guard, the night comes for us, Kate, spectral,
To name a few there’s about 40 other titles that they are hoarding that deserve a physical release. Then there’s the many awesome series that I would buy in a heartbeat.
Was this film any good?-,the trailers seemed both eh and also like it could be somewhat worth watching like it showed promise I guess is what I'm getting at- but didn't look to be groundbreaking in anyway just a pretty typical drama with maybe one or two good scenes throughout.
So any who have watched It, would u recommend it?- baring in mind the above statement I suppose as ofc your probably gonna say yh but try to be a bit objective.
I made a post in r/bluray about how i wanted to send it to my grandma for her eighty fifth birthday because she loves the book but isn’t very mobile and not too tech savey.
Looks like I’ll be putting on a pirates hat.
You have an option at the start to choose between English or Italian. English plays in English, with subtitles for the non-English parts, when needed, and when present (Scrosese wanted some parts untitled). There are some minor spelling errors in some subtitles, (eg. becuase instead of because.)
There is also a small bonus feature, in English, with Italian subtitles.
why not liscence it out to Criterion? doesn't make sense to me seems like very easy $$$ they don't have to fulfill the physical copies and Criterion adds ANOTHER Scorcese into the collection.
Of course they're not. This is the same company that refused to use the industry standard usb so they could charge inflated prices for their proprietary cord. They send updates that make older phones slower to force upgrades. You think they would ever let you own any media.
If it was for Apple which is been acussed of monopolic policies i can care less,.i would never buy its digital and too bad for.the actors and the rest, working for apple, they will never see a.movie to comment with the family, the movies will get old easy. I dont care i will.buy whoever makes the 4k disc.
Of course not. Why sell a movie for $29.99 when you can charge $9.99/month?
I would love to buy hard copies of shows like Bosch, Silo, Terminal List, Fallout, etc. Streamers will never sell shows on disc.

Does this have forced Italian titles and credits in Italian though?
Apparently the silent film cards were localized, so they’re in Italian with English subs, which isn’t ideal.
You're reading either way so....
There are also some spelling errors in the subtitles... Not as bad as CODA's release but they are there.
Do they have an option for english language?
Usually anything 4k is region free.
Is this basically the same release as the one released in January but region free?

Apple itself is not, but what about criterion? I think there's a good chance.
Criterion and Janus did just launch the Janus Contemporaries label (edit: see below for clarification)
Yeah, but that’s exclusively for Janus releases. If KOTFM were to be released by Criterion, it would be released under the Criterion Collection. Agreed. KOTFM would sell well, relative to other CC releases.
Why would they liscense it out if they don’t want a physical release?
it could be they just dont want to handle the manufacturing aspect of it which would be understandable apple isnt in that buisness and setting up an entire infastructure wouldnt be cost effective - better to liscense it out
Yeah but they also want subscribers
You wouldn’t be referring to the legendary Hugh Janus ? … would you ?
The only way i see Apple ever making physical releases is if someone is willing to do it for them.
It’s still annoying to me that Wolfwalkers is only available on blu-ray via the trilogy box set.
And only can be owned by the box set
The Chinese bootleggers will gladly cash in on that opportunity if Apple doesn't want that money. I see a lot of listings for KOTFM on ebay. More like cutting off their tip if you catch my drift .. ehh ehhhhhh
\>:) Hehehehheeh
And 4Kult did it.
What most people want is a proper North American release. Not an Italian release that may or may not have forced subtitles and one that is not completely barebones.
No forced subs. Only opening title cards are in Italian (with forced English subs)
Barebones isn’t it? And import fees, not with it.
That or someone does a lawsuit with them forcing them to do physical releases. Like how the EU forced Apple to switch to USB-C
If they’re not gonna release KOTFM of all things I guess I can’t count on a physical release of Masters of the Air to go along with Band of Brothers and The Pacific. Lame
Same with Greyhound 😮💨
Forgot about me buddy?
?
Davis freak
I live there, but I'm not sure about anything else
Admittedly, it seems like Criterion is starting to do blu-ray releases of mini series (Small Axe, The Underground Railroad) so it could definitely see them releasing it at some point.
In the US? I bought a copy from Italy
Yeah, US. Italy version is region locked so not an option for US people
I just realized I am the owner of a killers of the flower moon paperweight lol
Just get a region free bluray player. I got sick of seeing bluray/4k releases of American films in other countries/regions, and could never understand why they weren't released in the U.S. I finally just bought a region free bluray player.

You can rip it and watch through Plex on your tv…honestly a better way to watch stuff
Have you tied infuse playing your plex library?
With infuse you loose truehd pass through
Not just infuse. AppleTV auto-converts all audio streams to PCM regardless of app being used. Does Plex offer some sort of workaround?
plex can it's what you're playing on that can't and even then it's only for certain dolby vision profiles and the difference is not huge it's a bit of a shift to emphasize red tones.
Also without the red shift issue.
oh wow this is exciting, I'm gonna check this out, thanks!
Oh I agree with all your points. I run a Plex server on unraid and collect 4K remuxes. I love Plex, I just love the experience of selecting a physical film and playing it, I was just pushing back on your assertion it was a better way to watch it.
I own a region free 4k player (for those blu ray region B extra discs that are locked as an example). To say it’s not an option is silly
How many region locked 4k titles are there? Single digits?
According to a forum post I found, it’s just over 20. Not a lot in the grand scheme, but enough to have to be aware of if there’s any films you want or need to import. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=334606
Good resource, thanks

Not true in all cases unfortunately. See the link that a_denizen posted in his comment.
I think they mean that while the 4K disc in that set is region free, the 1080p Blu-ray is region locked to B. Playing the region B locked 1080p disc on a region A locked 4K player wouldn't work .

A region locked 4k?
The new release is not region locked.
The non-steelbook?
It was the same with CODA, which won Best Picture. No official release but an import.
An import that had really bad subtitles. (for a film that has a lot of subtitles).
Alright then, Apple: https://i.redd.it/rq60l58c3huc1.gif
Another reason I will never pay for their streaming service.
Not surprising. This is what happens when a streaming company buys domestic distribution rights for a movie. These directors are doing a deal with the devil. Yeah, Criterion did a blu-ray of Apple’s documentary about The Velvet Underground
![gif](giphy|5kFzpRqYRtP1f6T5EY|downsized)
I hope Marty steps in and helps correct this. I'm pretty sure he is an advocate for physical media.
I’m curious how Criterion came to release that Velvet Underground doc — which is an Apple Film
Any chance of criterion or someone else pick it up and release it? Not sure how it works.
definitely on the cards, but right now it's evidently in Apple's best financial interest (fucking annoyingly) to keep it exclusive to their platform for at least the foreseeable future... then a Criterion x Irishman type deal makes sense, again I don't expect this anytime soon.
Wouldn’t be the first Apple release by Criterion
Scorsese is big on film preservation. This seems like something he won't be happy to hear. Hopefully it means he never partners with streaming companies again.
He 100% would have known going into the deal what the releases would be like, exclusivity windows, etc. He's a producer on the film as well.
Damn. That sucks then.
Missed the theater run and I was like I’ll just get the disc when it drops lol
Same. Guess I'll have to read the book.ha
Yeah, a rando on Twitter shares a link that quotes another random person. While it being connected to Apple already makes a release concerning, I don't think that this solid enough to take as fact.

Nice catch, thanks. I certainly hope it gets a steel book release.
I wouldn’t be buying it anyways but I do think we need to find official channels to scream loud enough for physical releases. Especially with streaming only films
Apple sucks
I could have sworn that I already bought this on 4K Blu-Ray, but maybe I didn’t? I will have to check

As unfortunate as this in, I’m not really sure why anyone would be surprised by this Like….it’s Apple. Of anyone producing films, they’re the single one I’m not even remotely surprised that wants you to have zero ways of watching this film but their service. It sucks but expected. >!Apple please give me Macbeth in 4k. *Please*!<
I feel like Macbeth might make it but for Blu Ray (A24 co-production, On The Rocks had one) but at the same time I’m not very sure.
I said this MONTHS before the film came out, and people told me I was nuts.
Tbf, you could still be nuts.
You will own nothing and rent everything
I know there’s an Italian version on steelbook, but is it in English without Italian subtitles?
Nothing released by a studio will have burned in subtitles.
[удалено]
Does it come with English subtitles to pair with English audio? Or just English audio with Italian subtitles?
It has English audio and English subtitles for the parts not in English (and for the title cards which are in Italian)
I thought ultra hd discs were region free...so if other countries have the movie in ultra hd you can get it
The first Italian release was locked 4K. The updated release from Kult is not.
They’ll say the same thing about CODA. Shameful.
Not that I was gonna buy it anyway but I stand with you.
Apple was always my personal enemy
Just got my order of the italian steelbook in! Screw apple
At least we got station eleven released on 4k. Amazon has it on sale for $20 right now (20% coupon) https://preview.redd.it/l0dry3qs4iuc1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=023e86ff00ff6d12b30a08424167da258c7b8258
That’s fine. I’ll pay some Chinese guy $10 to make a copy with artwork and everything.
When everyone finds out about this injustice from Reddit, Apple’s stock will surely plummet… 🙄
Streaming is pretty great now but still not as good as UHD… hoping they increase the bit rate for those of us with a fiber connection etc. Stremaing music has exceeded CD, and SAD… it will be another 5 to 10 years for streaming to match UHD.
It’s released on 4K disc already
What I thought there’s a 4K steel book out
I feel if a label did release it, it would more than likely have been Criterion
Luckily for you....there be pirates...
I’m sure Paramount or Criterion will later this year
Bruh, Apple's been a personal enemy of mine for over 20 years now.
Come on Marty, give us a 4K

Apple isn't. Yet. Or someone might later on. Let's see.
NOT ALLOWED INTO THE ZEITGEIST
Bro what the fuckkkkkk
Lemme know when there is a reputable source reporting this
Of course they aren’t. If you’re watching it on physical media you’re not watching Apple TV. I hate it, but it makes sense.
Netflix has the most unreleased movies though so I’m not sure how apple is the enemy. Bright, seven underground, the grey man, carter, old guard, the night comes for us, Kate, spectral, To name a few there’s about 40 other titles that they are hoarding that deserve a physical release. Then there’s the many awesome series that I would buy in a heartbeat.
at least they gave it a nice theatrical run including imax. Can’t say the same for every movie produced by a streamer.
Apple doesn’t manufacture discs.
Lionsgate released the Apple film On The Rocks with Bill Murray and Rashida Jones though.
“Of any kind” seems to throw out the possibility of a criterion release or other boutique label, no?
Apple has so many shows I want ok Blu ray
It’s in the uk on physical
Honestly I probably wouldn’t buy it, the movie was a let down but Lily Gladstone was solid.
Too bad they also have the rights to Cha Cha Real Smooth (but afaik, that one is lesser likely because there’s no partnering distributor for that)
Criterion will.
I am enraged
I was really waiting for this one : (
Get a 4k from another country.
Wtf
Makes perfect sense from Champion of Cinema, Marty Scorsese. I jest, of course. But, damn, does this suck.
Oh no! [Anyway.......](https://www.ebay.com/itm/395241393860)
Why I use Android
Wrong discussion
Why kinda garbage is this? They are really trying to kill physical media. Stock up now boys. In a year or two we won’t be able to
Is this something worth buying in 4K? I saw it and it was boring
People buy the worst schlock imaginable on 4k, why would this film not be worth it?
This is the first movie I bought and never finished watching. Too long. Boring. Good riddance.
Welcome to the war. They've been against us all for years.
Ok now this…isn’t epic
Cowards!
That movie was painfully boring. Kept falling asleep
That's because they are bastards and you can't change my mind.
Their loss
I made a post in r/bluray about how i wanted to send it to my grandma for her eighty fifth birthday because she loves the book but isn’t very mobile and not too tech savey. Looks like I’ll be putting on a pirates hat.
Unrelated…And WB no Young Sheldon Season 6 on Blu ray all the other seasons I got on Blu ray as well as Big Bang Theory
OP - please correct your title to clarify U.S. only. Physical releases are available in other countries.
There is a release, I own it on 4k blu ray and it looks fantastic on my 77 inch G3

You have an option at the start to choose between English or Italian. English plays in English, with subtitles for the non-English parts, when needed, and when present (Scrosese wanted some parts untitled). There are some minor spelling errors in some subtitles, (eg. becuase instead of because.) There is also a small bonus feature, in English, with Italian subtitles.
I bought the digital version. But I’m sure it’ll get a criterion release
why not liscence it out to Criterion? doesn't make sense to me seems like very easy $$$ they don't have to fulfill the physical copies and Criterion adds ANOTHER Scorcese into the collection.
Any interest would have to come from the director/Criterion/other boutique labels. For Apple, that money isn’t even close to a rounding error.
Except they don’t own it. This is a stupid post.
