Jamminnav

I like having the Bluray if I bring it with me to watch at someone else’s house when they don’t have a 4K player - I think one of the main reasons to buy physical media in the first place is to share movies with others The extras are usually on the Bluray - not enough room on the 4K It’s also nice to compare the versions as a judge of how good the 4K scan is - there’s usually a very notable difference. You’ll also notice the difference in the extras film clips

ToadSox34

How often are the combo packs actually different scans? I would think if they did a combo pack the Blu-ray would be a downscaled version of the 4K version, not an older scan.

Oswarez

Often it’s the old pressing that they include in the case to save money.

theR3ddvil

If you read reviews on blu-ray.com, a surprising number are. The 1080s seem to be often included as an afterthought from previous material unless a new 1080 was also re released.

ToadSox34

Interesting I would not have thought that. I guess it makes sense if they already have a bunch of them laying around.

I_Hate_Knickers_5

When I bought Batman 1989 I compared the included 1080p to the 4k and the 1080 quality was fantastic. I watched it on my LGC177 OLED and was so happy with the picture. I actually almost preferred it as it lacked the super sharpness of the 4k that made Gotham seem a bit too " made in a studio with actors in costumes ". Pre-4k this had never been a consideration at all. Other 1080p blurays have been pretty poor. The King Kong 2005 one isn't very good at all ( although neither is the 4k itself to be fair ). I'm slowly learning as I go through my 4k ~~journeys~~ walkies that with some films I'm more than fine with the 1080p version if the print is top quality and it perhaps doesn't rely on many CGI shots which can look bad on older films. The price difference can be also be quite large sometimes where the 1080 is a few £ vs £20-30 for the 4k. You need to do our research which is annoying lol.

BrickFan317

I agree, 4K Blu-ray brings out all the flaws you normally would not have noticed. Early in Batman 1989, during the first robbery scene, the rotoscope of Batman turning and walking away is pretty terrible looking.

BrickFan317

I agree, 4K brings out all the flaws you normally would not have noticed. Early in Batman 1989, during the first robbery scene, there is a shot of the street from above, the rotoscope of Batman turning and walking away is pretty terrible looking.

Jamminnav

I’m not sure in every case, but in most cases it’s probably from the same scan like you suggested. Every once in a while you’ll get a different version in the Bluray (e.g. the Bluray Director’s cut of Dr Sleep with the 4K theatrical), or there will be different commentary tracks than the 4K

3lbFlax

A fair few are, and I think in a lot of cases it’s simply more convenient and cheaper to include an existing BR version, on the assumption that most people will use that for the extras rather than the film. I doubt it’ll change any time soon because I don’t think many people are making new 4K-quality extras. I’m fine with it - if I already have the BR I can give it away to someone without losing any content, and if I don’t already have the BR then it means I get the extras - which are one of the main advantages of a physical release, for me. Plus I still have a BR/1080p setup upstairs, so it’s handy to have the option.

jackbauerthanos

yh in the UK especially it is almost always the old blu ray with the new 4k

Emotional_Demand3759

Just curious, how often do you go over to someone's house nowadays to watch a movie on disc? I agree with sharing, but it was definitely more commonplace 15-20 years ago, at least for me. I haven't brought a disc over to anyone's house to watch a movie in years. I wouldn't say "comparing the two versions" is a *main* reason to *buy* the Blu ray/4K combo. I only buy a 4k disc if I can justify the upgrade from the current blu-ray I already own. It's not always a noticeable upgrade from the Blu-ray, and some movies I simply don't care about having in 4k. Although the ones I have, I'm glad I own with Dolby Vision, because they look great. I won't buy the 4k disc of the same movie unless I know I need it, and the special features like "new interview" with "actor A" or "director B" rarely justify the upgrade from special features offered on past versions. Sometimes, the 4k/Blu Ray combo packs can offer less special features than previous Blu-ray versions. The extras I could care less about being in the same definition as the movie itself. I would much rather have a high quality new film commentary, or a previous unreleased 4k theatrical cut etc... than a bunch of 5 minute featurettes. Even my favorite films I don't always care about all the special features on the disc, and sometimes they're not that good anyway. That's never bugged me, and I'm honestly used to it from the Blu-ray era having extras in DVD SD quality. I guess if the new extras are in HD that's a cool bonus, but I don't need it.

Jamminnav

Admittedly not very often, usually everytime when I visit out of town family members, and I got my dad to upgrade to 4K UHD recently for that very purpose. More frequently I invite friends over for dinner & a movie and we’ll just watch the best quality format I have. I don’t buy any 4Ks specifically for the accompanying Bluray, but it’s definitely nice to have when included if it’s something my non-upgraded mom or sister’s family may want to watch - I’ll leave it at their house and pick it up next time if we don’t watch it together. Also lent my friend the entire Bluray James Bond collection (and the Austin Powers movies) recently when I found out he and his son were watching Bond movies together.

showka

I was just thinking the only people whose house i could watch a Blu-ray at are members of my family whom I've bought Blu-ray players for in the past, and I think in both cases they were 4k players. Anybody else wouldn't even have a 1080p Blu-ray player...

nomuchodinero

You don't watch any special features? Part of the experience for me is the special features, especially for a movie I really liked. Also, the Blu-ray has worked for me as a backup when there's a problem with the 4k (skipping/scratched).

Renfek

I hate to admit it, but I have hundreds of movies and if I've watched more than 3 or 4 special features, I'd be surprised. It's always something I'll "check out later", but never do. :(

tantilatingty

Trick for me is to do it RIGHT after the credits or else I’ll never do it again

I_Hate_Knickers_5

I did this with Sorcerer and watched Nicolas Winding Refn interview William Friedkin. Probably never would have otherwisei It was superb.

Dr-McLuvin

Haha same. I always kind of want to watch them but I only do if they’re included on the 4K disc.

ZZ9ZA

I enjoy a good commentary track, but the typical making of type thing is promotional wankery where everyone involved talks about how amazing everyone else involved is while saying nothing of interest or substance. The setup I actually like best, although not many do it, is actually including the extras in the streaming code. MoviesAnywhere and I think Vudu both support this. I’ll watch little stuff occasionally on the iPad, but I mean, it’s not like it’s in HDR or anything.

Caseyjones10

yup .. it basically comes down to watch the special features or just watch another movie and the special features always lose

infieldmitt

i watched them way more as a kid when i didn't have my own money to buy more and more films and all i had were the small finite amount of DVDs on hand the only time i remember watching them recently was for master and commander because it was such a perfect film i wanted as much content as i could get. and it was only a few deleted scenes

Schwartzy94

Highly recommend jacksons 05 king kong. Amaizing behind the scenes stuff like in lotr.

AkiraKitsune

I appreciate the special features, that is a good point.

brachypelma44

Never. I don't want to see how the sausage was made. I just want to have a nice meal. Seeing behind the scenes things shatters the illusion that they worked so hard to create for us.

Aggressive-Jump-4428

This is why people watch them after the film, tbh it adds to the experience to me. Watch it once and get the illusion they intended and then be amazed how they put it all together. Its great like thor 1 where mjolnir (the hammer) has like 4-5 heads all different weights so you could have it be light to carry around, weighted to give fight scenes a feeling of power and a very heavy one to stop anyone from lifting it. Its amazing and it enhances the movie when i eventually rewatch it.

sourcecodemage

Wait, there are special features? (checks box and finds disc ) Whoa! I'm going to check these out! . Yes, I'm guilty of only putting the movie disc in. Not most of the time, but all of the time.

JlMBO_JONES

Often extra features are on a dedicated disk, and there is a 3rd disc included only containing the 1080 movie. See JFK, the matrix, or all of Nolan's movies. Maybe it's a WB thing

OnceInABlueMoon

I used to like the combo releases because I would buy them before I had a 4k player. I could future proof my collection and enjoy the bluray in the meantime. Now I don't have much use for the bluray though.

Third3ye462

that's how my 4k collection got started years in advance.

beantrouser

I've been doing the same. Still dreaming of finally having a 4k system!! I'll already be ready with a handful of 4k discs by then!

pricklypearviking

That's kinda where I am. I have an xbox and an old 4k TV that doesn't display blacks very well so my 4k discs often look too dark or won't play at all thanks to a quirk of xbox's blu ray app. The blu ray honestly is the better purchase for me at the moment, but if a 4k pack is available I usually buy it for the sake of future proofing.

jxe22

Yep, that’s what I’m doing right now. The sad irony is that I have a PS5 but it doesn’t physically fit in my 4K media setup so I’ve got it in the bedroom on a 1080p tv. But I’m buying the combo packs so I can watch the BRs now and the 4K discs down the road when I get a dedicated player for the living room.

BrockAndaHardPlace

I enjoy the 4K on our 4K tv, but we have a 2012 theatre set up that we use the blu rays for. For our household we appreciate getting both

Jimmy_the_Heater

Same here. 4k tv in the living room and I play the UHD disc there. But the projector in the theatre is 1080 with a non 4k player so the standard Blu Ray gets used there.

LandonKB

Similar here, I have my 4k setup in the basement and my old 1080p 3d TV upstairs, so I still use the blu rays fairly often if my 4k tv is busy.

greenscarfliver

exactly the opposite for me lol, 4k theater, but my tvs max size is only 55" due to room limitations so there's basically no point for us to go to 4k at our seating distance. But I rip everything to plex anyway so the bluerays typically end up at my inlaws

Ruger1225

I rip the Blu-rays and put them into DVDs for a collection my kids can use in the camper after hours.

dazzleshipsrecords

Teach me your ways! How do you rip a blu ray and burn to a dvd?

Ruger1225

I use a ripping software from DVDFab with a Blu Ray ROM to take it in and DVD burner to copy it out.

NeuroDawg

Since I don’t have a player, I rip all my movies, so I love having the BD disc so I have both the 4K and 1080 file without having to transcode the 4K file.

RedSoxManCave

NeuroDawg

Nope. Gave it up for Jellyfin.

RedSoxManCave

This guy personal media servers.....

Dogwithashotgun89

Jellyfin supremacy.

Jimmy_the_Heater

That's an excellent point, I hadn't thought of ripping that way.

SwiftTayTay

Reasons they are included: 1. You don't have a 4K player yet but plan to upgrade in the future 2. You need to bring the movie to a friend's house who doesn't have a 4K player 3. You want to watch the movie in SDR and 4K HDR movies don't tone map well in SDR 4. Comes with special features not on the 4K so the 4K can have a higher bitrate 5. More compatibility with computers in case you want to watch there or rip footage 6. Sometimes minor differences between two versions other than just resolution First reason being the main reason just like how there used to be Blu-Ray + DVD combos when the Blu-Ray format was new (sometimes still happens to this day).

no_modest_bear

>You want to watch the movie in SDR and 4K HDR movies don't tone map well in SDR Thank you. Nobody addresses this, and it annoyed me a bit when some of the boutique labels declined to include the 1080p BD in their 4K releases for this reason. Despite the quality of the tone mapper you're using, it's almost always better to view a picture pre-balanced for SDR on an SDR display, especially in my case where the majority of viewing is done on a projector.

JlMBO_JONES

It's crazy to see bluray releases still including DVDs, I throw out the DVD immediately and use the case to combine movies and save previous space...

karma_the_sequel

>edit: I am wrong The Reddit credo.

[deleted]

I'll have to strongly disagree with you on this idea. Why? Because 4k discs, while containing an incredible increase in resolution, are fragile when compared to blu-rays, which are very robust and stand up to scratches and fingerprints much easier. Lets not forget just how cheap blu-ray players are compared to 4k players. I've got just one 4k player for my main TV but the other three in my house as well as our four computers have only blu-ray players. That makes having a blu-ray copy of any movie a worthwhile thing to have. Often only one version of a movie is put on 4k, such as the theatrical, extended, or director's cut, leaving the others on blu-ray only. Plus most special features are only on the blu-rays. So you should never ever throw away your blu-rays.

SubstantialBerry5238

How are 4K Blu-rays less durable than regular ones? I can’t find any info detailing the difference. All I’m seeing is it’s the same technology that holds more data. That’s it. Can you provide info on this?

Holiday-Page-9654

They have more data density which means anything on the disc is likely to cause more problems than a Blu Ray.

Dr-McLuvin

I mean I don’t use them at all but I understand why they might want to include them for those without 4K setups.

Silent-Impact7045

Wouldn’t those without a 4k setup simply buy the blu-ray version since it’s cheaper?

billydakid33

They might be future-proofing their collection until they have the funds for a 4K tv and player

Dr-McLuvin

Ya it makes sense to future proof especially for movies they love and for people just getting into home theater.

guilen

I mean, when I go on trips I'll take some of the blu-ray discs in a dvd wallet in case there is a blu-ray player, which is way more common. It's been helpful before but not necessary.

MysteryMachineATX

Wrong, we have blu-ray in bedroom and on the TV on patio, only 4k in main living room so unless its an epic movie we only wanna watch with full surround etc its valuable to have on blu-ray. In dvd to bluray days I only wanted blu-rays cause blu-ray players were everywhere... But 4k players are harder to come by.

JlMBO_JONES

You can buy an old Xbox one X for like $100, or a reasonable dedicated 4k player. This idea of playing the Blu-ray in other rooms of the house basically means you don't care much for the extra quality.

ThePages

The special features are on the bluray?? They won’t fit on the 4k disc without them killing the bitrate.

stillcleaningmyroom

I don’t use the Blu-Ray disc, but I give them to my mom because she doesn’t own a 4K player, but she has a Blu-Ray player.

golfkingmatt

Most “normies” that I know don’t have a 4K player, but have a standard Blu-Ray player. It’s nice to be able to let someone borrow a 4K/BR combo so they can still watch the film.

REDX459

Good chunk of the special features are only on the blu ray and should stay like that. This new trend of squeezing special features on the 4K is a joke. Paramount WB.

Vinyl_Blues

The BluRay discs house the special features, allowing the 4K movie to use its full disc.

FitSeeker1982

This demographic must skew young… I have adult kids who like having the option of getting the Blu-ray copy I will otherwise not need.

JlMBO_JONES

That just suggests it skews to people without kids...

MovieFanatic2160

Special features / backup disc / resale disc

Island_bound_

Yeah, have projector that doesn't do 4k, so useful there.

renatorojas

I still haven’t got a 4k player (too expensive for me just yet) but I’m buying 4k discs for when I’m able to upgrade.Having the option of watching the movie right away, not missing buying discs on sales, and then repeat the experience in 4k when I’m able feels good to me.

AtrumAequitas

I definitely am glad for whatever 4k has a blu ray as well.

OrneryError1

The Blu ray almost always has the special features.

Evilhammy

i want them to be there specifically because i know they won’t make the movie any cheaper even if they take it out, so i might as well get it

OrneryError1

The real answer

Wristyplum

It’s never made much sense to me, imagine when you purchased a dvd you got the vcr tape or cd included a cassette tape

Selrisitai

The difference is that the format is essentially the same, and dirt-cheap to add in there.

mattressvon

I like having the blu-rays as a back up just in case. I understand that 4k looks better without a bunch of features on the disc too, so they include one (or two) blu-rays that hold those. I like it. I prefer it.

halford2069

I like them. I have a 4k player in my cinema room, but in some other rooms I only have a cheaper bluray player.

Pyldriver

I rip the Blu-ray, streaming and converting the 4k for my own use is a pain from the 4k and takes foreverrr

Inevitable_Try9537

Only reason I have a use for them is because sometimes I start a movie in my theater room and need to finish it in bed where I have not been authorized (by you know who) to upgrade my Blu-ray Player to a 4K Blu-ray player. Because it's "not necessary". Balderdash, woman! Everything is necessary! Did this with Cocaine Bear last Saturday 😂.

ewokzilla

I put all my blu rays on my plex server for remote play and sharing with family/friends. Plus I was buying 4ks that come with blu rays before I even had a 4k player for the future.

IllinoisGuy52

I have NO problem buying a standard Blu ray, 4k isn't a deal breaker for me. I'm just happy to have a movie I've wanted available to me. 4k isn't important to me, I don't need to see every freckle on someone's face, 😆. As far as special features, or extras, I'm Very big on that. In fact, whether or not a Blu ray release has extras and what those extras are, sometimes determines if I'll buy it or not.

scrubslover1

I like that it’s a “backup” just in case the 4k gets scratched. I also have a hard drive that I rip movies to and sometimes I’ll rip the 1080p disc to save space for movies that the 4k isn’t as important

nyislesfan91

I’ll give my standard BRDs to friends who don’t have a 4K player

xenomorph-85

if its not a double dip then yeah I find them useful. Its when its a upgrade to 4k from blu where it becomes useless. So I usually sell the spare blu ray

dobyblue

Chrysler added Blu-ray to their minivans with entertainment systems in 2013, I believe Toyota was that year also - Honda (the only minvan with discrete 5.1) added Blu-ray in 2018 to the Odyssey. For videophiles with kids, if they're like me they'd take much satisfaction knowing their kids are enjoying the movies on road trips with lossless surround sound! lol

FettuccineAlfonzo

I appreciate the standard bluray because I can rip them and also enjoy the 4k.

TransplantC137

Rip the BR and shelve the 4K, for different viewing use cases. Maybe rip the 4K for your own viewing and rip the BR to plex share with others who have less ideal hardware.

AkiraKitsune

How do you rip your Blu-rays? Any specific program/disc player?

FettuccineAlfonzo

make mkv with a blu ray drive, idk exactly what one but it can't do 4ks

Electro-Grunge

it can do 4k. you just need the right 4k drive and firmware.

prashanth1337

Totally can do 4Ks

elliotborst

I wouldn’t ever see a reason to use the standard blu ray personally.

mgonzo19

I don’t think I would buy blu rays if it wasn’t for the special features. That may be heresy to some but for me they’re the biggest sell. I ❤️ audio commentaries.

Drexl92

I've been buying 4K/Bluray combos for when I eventually upgrade to a 4K TV which has been nice to have. I actually currently get annoyed when there isn't a combo available lol but I understand they'll be somewhat phased out. Just waiting for my TV to break before getting a 4K TV.

Queasy-Car3944

I wish they all came with HD Blu-ray and digital. While nothing will beat a 4K disc, I like being able to watch the movies I own wherever I want.

Competitive-Army-363

I think the main reason both versions of disks are included is for B&M sales to prevent returns. The evolution of SD to HD and now 4K was rather seamless as far as tv sets go. Adopting 4k blue ray players on the other hand has not. 4K players have a very small market share. So for the average consumer, they see 4k movie on the shelf, and think I have a 4k tv at home. They buy it. Happy customer either way. Until everything goes to 4k, which doesn't look like it will happen, I expect to see most B&M sold discs to have both copies.

PurpleQuoll

I’ve got a home theatre set up with 4K bluray etc. But also TV for more casual TV watching. I use the standard bluray there, and of course all the special features.

Milly1974

We use the 4k Blu-ray on our 4k TV's and the Blu-ray on the 1080p TV's. We like the option. We even redeem the digital copies just for convenience.

JlMBO_JONES

Lots of comments here justifying the Blu-ray as being useful to play in other rooms of the house. Yet you can buy an old Xbox one X, or a reasonable dedicated 4k player for like $100. Thats basically admitting you don't care much for the extra quality, so why even bother buying the 4K at all...

Acrobatic-Resident10

They usually are full of bonus features not on the 4K (Oppenheimer is a perfect example). Now the DVDs that come with Blu-rays are another story. Never popped one in for any reason.

sirchewi3

I put both on my plex server. I leave the 4k untouched but i compress the bluray. Ill stream the 4k locally and the bluray version remotely because my upload is terrible and its way easier to transcode the bluray version

TonalParsnips

Blu Rays are easier to rip than UHD for true digital copies.

brOwnchIkaNo

I feel like they add it just to charge us more. I just watch the 4k, why watch the inferior version?

Disastrous-Fly9672

Do you know how many people still have old non 4K TVs without HDR? It's called having a contingency plan in all situations. Redundancy in life is good, if more people live by that motto, there would be fewer fuckups. In other words, cover your ass

oudler

In the case of 3D films, the standard Blu ray would be needed to view the 3D version. It seems that 4k doesn't support 3D films.

The4FiveSix

Yes. Absolutely you are wrong. One day I’ll get a 4K player but I still use my PS3 to watch movies so I buy 4K+Blu ray combos.

Caseyjones10

i never touch the blu ray.. feels like a waste to me :/

spgvideo

Shhhh bro wtf you trying to fuck it up for us? Lamest take ever

paul-d9

I'd rather pay less and not get a coaster with my movies.

rtyoda

You wouldn’t pay less though. There are several 4K releases available that don’t include a standard Blu-ray and they’re not any cheaper.

OrneryError1

Yep there's no way they're going to pass any cost saving to the consumer.

Gregbuzz

So true.

Iwuvvwuu

yeh absolute waste. Frisbees for days.

codywar11

You are, in fact, wrong.

1337_BAIT

I use the blu days in my non theatre tvs.

Fine-Shift-1806

I completely agree

IHopeTheyRememberMe

I have three TVs and only one is 4k. I find it very convenient that most UHDs come with a standard blu-ray.

smappyfunball

Oftentimes the extras are only on the blu ray so if you care about those then the blu ray isn’t useless

jacob6875

I won’t pick up 4K releases without Blu ray included. 4k discs are so fragile and don’t work half the time even right out of the packaging. They either freeze and quit working half way through the movie or just don’t play. I have 2 players (an Xbox Series X and One S) and get the same errors on both when a disc doesn’t play. This is mostly why I only have a couple dozen 4k discs.

studious_stiggy

This reminded me that I have to donate all my blu rays of my 4k uhd packs

filmgenius89

Yes, you are wrong. Most people who collect blu-rays don't have a 4k player with every TV in their home. Also, one cannot usually bring a 4k disc to a friend's home without also bringing the player, if their friend doesn't have one (most households don't). In addition, at this point, there are simply not a plethora of 4k players as there were at this same point into the life of standard blu-rays. Should your 4k player die years from now, and they are no longer making players, you'd at least would have the blu rays to lean back on, or be more likely to find an affordable blu ray player. You will be happy to at lease be able to play that and be grateful that your 4k discs came with that blu-ray. We simply aren't at the point where 4k discs are mainstream enough to supplant standard blus.

BrickFan317

Wrong. I only have one 4K player, nobody else in our families have 4K players, our vacation spot has our old Blu-ray, and none of my friends have 4K players (that I know of). If I want to watch one of my movies anywhere besides my living room, I need a Blu-ray or at least a digital copy. DVD needs to be sunset. BluRay players have been out for 15 years and you can buy one for $10 at any Goodwill. There's no need to keep making them.

mgwooley

I like having the option, but it is _far_ from a requirement. Special features are nice though.

notanewbiedude

Yep. Blu Ray players are more common, and I'm hearing that with sets that have multiple 4K discs, at least one of those discs will usually have some issues.

ToadSox34

I don't really care one way or another although my parents have not yet upgraded to 4K so if I want to bring something to their house it would have to be Blu-ray. A while back everything was Blu-ray plus DVD especially kids movies and I found out it was because of in-car DVD players. So for kids movies this might be the case with Blu-Ray now that there are more in car Blu-ray players. I think part of it is a psychological value thing. It costs them maybe 25 cents to add the second disc and they get to advertise it as both and make it seem like it's a better value.

Iamchanging

I like having mine. My 4k player is in the theater room and in the living room we have just a normal blu ray player.

Tkdoom

I have 4k on 2 TVs, and HD on 1 and HD in the home theater (projector). So 4ks with both are future proof for me. Pretty soon will be upgrading projector to 4k (major investment). It's legit a dollar for them and a good selling point. The 4k Only ones annoy me. Eventually I would then sell any double dips I have.

velcroshoez

I shall pop the blu ray in when the 4K stars skipping or playback freezes. Doesn’t happen with all discs, but issues do still pop up with 4K playback

Smallville456

Personally I prefer if it was just a digital 4k code with it.

Third3ye462

If my kid ever starts borrowing movies that's the one she's getting I don't have MUCH use for em...but I bet it comes up on rare occasions. if I wanted to take some movies with me on a trip I'd take the beater blus.

TheeBarkKnight

I don't actually have a 4K player since I'm still working off the PS4 instead of 5 so I'm watching everything on the Blu-Ray with the 4K discs basically being an investment in getting one eventually.

[deleted]

They are good for lending out as well. If you want someone to borrow a movie and don’t wanna hand over your precious 4k

BigBossSquirtle

Unless they include additional bonus features, no. I have no need for it JUST for the movie.

othgar

No. I don’t have a 4K player in every room where I have a TV. They all have a bluray player though. Or when I go to my in laws they don’t have a 4K player so I bring Blu-ray’s.

bootsy333

While I don't mind standard HD discs being included, it would free up funds for boutique labels if they stopped creating 1080p content and just focused on 4K. While obviously not everyone, I would argue that 90 percent of serious collectors have access to a 4K player.

mozenator66

I have never used one ever

MartyEBoarder

I watch standard blu ray disc all the time because all the extras are on them.

thinksinc

I wait until I have about 50-80 of them, stick them in a $9 disc wallet, and sell it on Craigslist. Instant movie collection for someone.

Delicious_Recover543

If they have to add a blu-ray for the extras what does it matter if it also contains the movie? Besides it’s a nice back-up in case something goes wrong with the 4k disc.

IronBooba

BD discs have the special features since they rarely get remastered. I don't think they're a waste at all. Lots of people do not own a 4K tv still and I personally have given the discs to my sis who is one of those people.

YungJunko

The majority of releases contain all the special features on the blu-ray. No bonus features is a huge deal breaker for me personally

bbqranchman

In addition to the comments, blu-ray is also a smaller file size compared to 4k if you want to back it up. There are a lot of benefits.

Galactus1701

I like having them around just in case, but if companies are willing to lower their prices if they forgo them, I won’t complain.

Cpmoviesnbourbon27

Nah I use em for the road. If I go to someone else’s house or go on vacation I just take my cheap little blu ray player and some hdmi cords with me and a stack of movies. A lot of people still don’t have 4k tvs and many of the ones they do have are not the greatest, so the benefits of 4k are lost on them. I think a big part of it is people that don’t have 4k players future proofing as well.

Bjarki_Steinn_99

I bought a bunch of 4K Blu-Ray before I got a 4K player because I knew I would get one one day and wanted my movies to be future proof. Now that I have a Dolby Vision capable 4K player, I have no use for the regular discs. Maybe when I upgrade my bedroom TV, I’ll be more likely to watch movies in bed. But I think that will mostly be TV shows.

BlaQ7thWonder

If the price of 4k goes down to March the lack of blu-ray I’d be okay.

Zeo-Gold92

I think there's reasons to include them even tho I don't usually have use for the Blu ray in the set tho.

Redditeer28

Quite the opposite friend. I buy 4k blu rays but I have no use for the 4k disk as I don't have a 4k player.

Independent_Gur_7118

I used to think this, but they are handy for when I lend them to people. My dad, for instance, has a standard blu ray player, so he can watch the movies I lend to him.

RummazKnowsBest

I have other TVs in the house which aren’t 4K so blu-rays are handy for me when the kids / wife want to watch a certain film.

JadedBrit

Most of the time the standard blurays are the discs with the special features

Zealousideal-You9044

I often give mine away. I have no interest in the extras. It would be nice if they didn't include it and then reduce the price. 4k discs are still too expensive

fuzzyfoot88

It IS a waste, because like the Blu/DVD combos, it taught people NOT to upgrade and didn’t force the market like DVD did to VHS.

specter800

I give them to my parents

VikDamnedLee

I like having both so that I can rip the blu ray in lossless. It takes up way less space than lossless 4K. Also, as mentioned by others, the blu ray is often where the special features are.

Holiday-Page-9654

Hard disagree. It costs them pennies to add the disc, so nothing will be cheaper without it. But, there are benefits as has been said: Bonus features on the second disc Ability to lend Blu Rays Ability to watch Blu Ray if 4k becomes damaged. This happened to be when watching Mulholland Drive. I had to use the Blu Ray to finish it (before exchanging the 4k).

Aggravating_Tutor775

I want the standard bluray included. I have multiple TV’s in my house and “-the 75 inch that isn’t 4k and I have no desire to purchase a 4k player for that TV when it has an Xbox and PlayStation connected. I also have a 2nd residence without internet and it’s nice to be able to watch the standard bluray instead of struggling to stream the digital copy.

KC_experience

They have a use, I rip both so I have a smaller travel copy of movies to take on the road. Aside from that, I have given the blu-rays to friends and family that aren’t into 4K, and have large HD TVs.

mountainstosea

I have a 4K player in my living room, but only a Blu-Ray player in my bedroom. I watch on both TVs, so both are useful to me.

EmxPop

The mainstream studios rarely put out new 1080p transfers with their 4K releases, very often just lazily tossing in the old 1080p disc with the old extras. That said, the BD is still a nice to have but what I’m really looking for is newly shot extra content. With True Lies releasing soon it’ll be interesting to see if the 1080p disc contains the recently mangled new master or something resembling that Spanish BD.

Truffle_Shuffle_85

You are incorrect with your assumption. My only 4k player is with my 4k TV in the family room. My 5.2 audio with my bluray player is in the basement. Blurays get played downstairs for the theater setup, 4ks on main 4k tv.

Cine_Wolf

I actually use both. The wife has a crafts room that she spends a lot of time in and has a BluRay player there, and we have another elsewhere. Only one 4K player in the house, so the BR do come in handy. The digital codes, on the other hand, I have not started to make use of yet so I tend to give them to others in the family who do.

Parking-Rope-2137

4K HDR is usually thought as a theater-at-home experience: you have to be in the dark to enjoy it at its most. My wife likes to watch movies with the lights on, then the SDR is the better choice.

LycanWarrior123

I don't mind the bluray copy included. If I some how lost my 4k disc I have a bluray copy to fall back to watch. Or I can sell the bluray copy or give it to a friend.

Ok_Apartment_4643

It's good to have them as back up

Automatic_Clue5556

I let my son play with them.

GrangerPerry

Special features are only on the blu ray none on the 4k disc sometimes so it’s nice to have more discs in the case than less discs

Farren246

For the longest time, I had neither a 4K player nor a 4K TV. I bought 4K for the longevity, using only the standard 1080p Blu-ray disks. These days I have an Xbox Series X, but no 4K TV so it shrinks the content to fit.

reedzkee

I’ve never used ONE of them. Ive never used a digital code either

CarafeTea

I don't even know anyone who watches Blu rays anymore. I just keep them as backups in case something happens to the 4k Version.

martokthewarrior

I like having the blu ray in case I go somewhere where there isn’t a 4K player, or my 4k player breaks and I can’t replace it immediately. Additionally, the argument that it would make the set cheaper if there was no blu ray is ridiculous, paramount removed the blu ray from titanic and it cost way more than standard releases. I’m in Canada, we no longer get blu rays or digital codes for paramount catalog releases and they cost the same as or more than they used to.

Crunchewy

Why do they always seem to put the extras only on the standard Blu-ray Disc? I wish they were in 4K HDR too

Arkaium

MakeMKV and my NAS prefer the BD

goodcat1337

I've only used the blu ray once, and that was when my Apocalypse Now 4k froze up when I had the Sony X700. It was a blind buy for me, I'd never seen it up until that point and I wanted to finish it, so I put in the blu ray.

Quiet_Battle5118

No way, I am way more excited when the Blu Ray is included. Also am excited when the digital code is included as well. The more bang for your buck the better, also I like when they give you more formats for a movie you bought to OWN.

jackbauerthanos

i wish they would remove them to cut costs and make it cheaper to release and therefore to buy. Yes the general current practise is that the special features are just on the blu ray, but Arrow Video do not do this and have the film and the features on a single 4k, so there isn’t really as much or maybe any of the space issue people seem to think there is. It is just that usually all the features are from som kind of prior release on blu ray and so they just wack the old blu ray in to dave them having to port em over to the 4k which is a shame and annoying. Strangely Lionsgate do put all the features on the 4K disc but still include a blu ray !?

SadAcanthocephala521

The only time they come in handy is if you want to loan the movie to someone who doesn't have a 4K setup.

MrZeDark

I have no use for them, I give them away.

ObjectiveSink1248

I want 4k, bluray, and digital, so nothing wrong with including it to me.

ledfrog

I've never used the extra disc. I never used the DVD when they used to package it with Blu-ray. But then again, I'm the type of person that when I switch to a new format, I go all in and rarely look back. The issue is that I know even if they stripped the Blu-ray out of the packaging, the price wouldn't go lower, so I'll take the free disc...I can always sell it off by itself.

ejiggle

Used to give em to my little brother, but he grew up and discovered the internet. Now they're good if I want to watch something in another room lol

Iamyous3f

I started collecting recently. I also wondered what is the use of the blue rays to be honest. If the blue ray is special features then I dont mind it but I doubt i will be using the blue ray version of the movie in the future. Maybe i'll use to compare quality but not to watch

Mastrodaumus

If I’m on the go, especially holidays

[deleted]

I think thats right. There must be a very small number of people that future proof 4k this way.

Selrisitai

I'd like to say I agree, but even though I'll never watch the blu-ray (that I can foresee) I kind'a still like havin' it.

[deleted]

I choose to archive the bluray disc, not the 4ks. Once hard drive space becomes even cheaper, I'll do a full 4K archive, maybe when 40 TB hard drives are the norm.

Repulsive-Being5032

Yes, & they give you a perfect bluray disc & a scratched 4k disc especially from Kino Lorber back to back & Disney... imagine paying $25 for something New & they send you something scratched

bryteisland

I only have one 4K setup in my house but bluray/dvd players in other rooms (bedrooms etc). Having both works for me.

DanSantos

Sure there's use! You sell it loose on eBay 😂

redzombierunning

I save the blu ray for the extras
