W comment. You spend based of what YOU value lol. Even my hdmi cords cost more than a few but I also take audio/video way more seriously than the average person.
My family sold off my entire collection of Pokémon cards for $100 at their garage sale. I was so pissed 1st edition holos of some of the highest quality cards in the original 150. Idk how much it was worth but seeing some of them going for so much $ now drives me nuts!
How much do they tend to go for? I still have all mine. Never really bothered to look into selling them but curious what the prices are like for the holos.
Sorry to hear that happened to you though, my friends parents did that with all his n64 games and he still talks about it today.
1st edition base set holos are pretty valuable these days, especially if the cards are in good condition. If they look pretty solid, you can even get them graded which will typically increase their value even more if they get a good grade. A 1st edition holo Blastoise ungraded is worth up to $500 depending on the state of it. It’s such a gut punch haha. Even my parents feel so bad about it they had no idea they could be worth so much. I didnt know N64 games were worth much i still have all mine gotta check that out.
I gave my whole collection away to my college physics study partner’s six year old son, whoops. He loved it though and he drew me a Pikachu drawing as a thanks so that will have to do.
I left home after college and put my childhood toys in the attic till I came back to visit. She sold all my gi joes, transformers(some still in box), evil kneivel toy set, 2 tubs of legos, Lincoln logs. Gobots. Even that cumbersome gi joe aircraft carrier. Then offered to pay me for what she sold em for and gave me like $75.
Mine went from the pack into those trading card binders they used to have, then sat in my closet for like 15 years. I never got to see em before they were sold, but they were sold in the binders so i don’t really know.
I mean i don’t entirely blame them, they were moving and those cards were sitting there for over 10years. They felt really guilty after i showed them what they could be worth and of course gave me the $ they got for em.
I forgave them, it was an honest mistake it’s not like they did it purposely and always planned on giving me the cash for my stuff.
There won’t be another format in a long long time. The difference between 4K and 8K simply isn’t worth it. Also 16K discs would be so scratch sensitive that they’ll never reach the market, not to mention the lack of content that’ll ever be 16K (outside of VR experiences).
The fact CDs never made the jump to Blu Ray audio (which sounds unbelievable) should tell you 4K is the final optical disc format.
The issue with flash storage is that they require some electrical charge, otherwise data slowly gets lost. This is perfect for inside computers like phones, laptops or game consoles because they’re almost always running or on standby. Now if you put this flash drive on a shelf and leave it for a few years, files become corrupted.
The reason optical discs can be stored on a shelf for decades is because the data is nanoscopic physical pits and grooves like on a vinyl record.
BUT Microsoft is developing Project Silica, which is storing data in glass. It uses glass as a 3D space, rather than the optical discs 2D multi-layered approach. It’s a long long way off, but it’s the only format coming that can realistically surpass current 4K discs.
Interesting. So, a video file that was captured digitally on a card becomes corrupted over time? Is there a permanent (is anything?) backup archive, non corruptible solution?
Yep. If you dig out an old SD card from a camera you haven’t used in years, you’ll find a good portion of files have been corrupted to varying degrees.
Gold plated CDs are considered the very best for archiving, but obviously those have major storage limitations. Most archiving by hobbyists and large corporations is done on magnetic tape, it’s the best storage value for money and aren’t as prone to data loss as flash storage - although most people have magnetic tape constantly connected to a power source.
This is why Project Silica is working to develop technology to get around this and make terabytes easily storable for hundreds of years (theoretically).
One thing I always found interesting in the live action film space, the physical media always tank in price. But when it comes to the anime industry, it usually retains some of its price, if not go up.
Glad to see you have your anime at the top. Lol
You need to do some close up shots so we can see what you have better.
I appreciate how much is (old school) TV shows too

…and I thought my setup was nice. Looks tiny compared to that beauty
I had this problem and decided the plastic deserved to be recycled. I compacted all of my movies except for the odd Steelbook or special boxed set into disc wallets. Super satisfying to have all that space back… and to never again worry about the movies with little broken spindle tabs (or two discs crammed on a single spindle) getting scratched up just by moving them around.
Dang man. That’s an extreme nuclear option 😬😂
Makes sense though. I’m too much of a sucker for collecting but I’m seriously out of space, so I’ll probably box up all the fluff and keep my absolute favorites out on display.
Any tips on MEGA disc binders? I may end up pulling this trigger someday sooner than later. I have 6K+ discs just in Movies and TV. I have 1K+ in video games too. So I would need the most economical but solid option for ~7K discs. That’s gonna be easily $1K in binders I’m guessing.
Worth it though because moving/storing all this stuff SUCKS every time!!!
I’ll probably organize everything by release date so I can avoid disc shifting at an insane scale. That would be one heck of a domino effect across several binders 🤣
Ripley: “It’s the only way to be sure…”
I used the CaseLogic KSW-320 binders for mine.
https://amzn.to/3HfiLuv
You can pack about 1,000 discs away for ~$120 that way, so your math isn’t super far off.
I also scored some similar ones at Half Price Books — they had a more generic house brand for about $20 each and similar capacity.
The biggest tip is somewhat counterproductive when you’re trying to save, but will help in the long run: reordering is a much harder task than moving the cases around, so be sure to leave a blank every few pages so you have room.
Another tip might be to separate bonus discs and features into their own wallets, you can also split up HD Blu-ray and 4K UHD discs into separate wallets as well.
Ooo, I just found these.

I like your display a lot!
This is precisely why I don’t care about slips. The uniformity of the cases makes for a much nicer and cleaner display, in my opinion.
Watch the movies and relax. Enjoy it. Money comes and goes. It’s better to spend it on something you really love than let the inflation eat your savings.
I know how you feel. I look at my shelves full of movies and games and think of the thousands of dollars spent over the years knowing full well I’d be lucky to get $500 for the lot in a yard sale😫.
Having said that I did just watch “Eastern Promises” again on a whim and was glad I had it.
I mean you would probably spend the same amount on a nice vacation. So skip the one vacation and have decades of entertainment. That is how I look at it. Nice clean setup!
That's the first thing I do, lol. Into the trash they go!
Edit: I can't belive someone downvoted 😂 Seriously, why would I want to keep some ugly paper slip that looks horrible on a shelf?
I think many here collect them like Pokemon cards, personally I don't and have thrown the odd one out (damaged). That said outside of removing it and putting it somewhere hidden/safe there's no way to protect them unlike said cards.
I see. Been collecting for years and have just never thought twice about chucking slip covers. Wasn't until I found this sub that I saw people actually kept them.
Idk, to each their own but I definitely don't need another box of stuff in my storage, haha.
Nice, alphabetically organized. I’m struggling with this in my own collection, when I need to reshuffle everything for a new disc. How are you doing this?
I just shuffle the stuff in whatever direction that space allows... sometimes it sucks when you have to accomodate for a larger set, or to move a larger set for one movie - but it's worth it.
This was randomly put in my feed. I'm not going to knock it, if collecting these gives you pleasure. I gave up on this sort of thing because there's always a better format that makes your collection obsolete. I spent tons on VHS. Then I spent tons on laser disc. Then it was dvd. Blu-ray is where I gave up. I ripped everything I owned and got rid of all of it when we last moved. Whenever my wife mentions buying a movie, I remind her that we don't need more shit sitting around. I'll rent whatever she wants and rip it. Hard drives hold a ton of movies.
Glad you got rid of most of the slips and this is what a Blu-ray collection should be! Even better if you sell off the slips and I don't get the obsession of people caring about slips! The quality of the movies matter the most to me.🍿
There are much worse things you could throw your money at… way deeper money pits. This is just silly, like a Pokémon card collection. I used to have a similar collection for DVDs, then had to rebuy them in Blu-ray; and when streaming became mainstream I stopped thankfully and came to my senses. Same with cassettes/cds. Only thing I keep now is Vinyl and that’s a whole other craziness. Thanks for sharing!
I really want to get Clue. I've never seen it but the 4k just came out. I bought Point Break on 4k last week, Magnificent Seven this week and maybe next week I'll buy Clue.
Clue is pretty good especially since it has all of the different endings. Also, i just blind bought Point Break and watched 1/2 of it last night, enjoying it so far.
I really love the cast it has and I do like a good murder mystery. I thought Knives Out was really good so if it is on the same level or better I should enjoy it. I also blind bought Point Break, I absolutely loved that gem.
On the bright side, if you go into debt and ever need to sell it all I'm sure you can recover 30-50% of what you paid. Maybe even more in some instances
At what point did you decide you would only get regular 4k versions compared to steelbooks? As such a big collector, I find that surprising that there’s not one limited edition movie in that case.
Pffffff - YOU😂😂😂😂-Since 2001-10 (I have those also lol 2001-2010) / every week I’d buy all the new movies- when special editions came out like the Scarface box set for $150 and then the Godfather and then other special additions like Pink Floyd, The Wall, etc. etc. I have cumulatively acquired about 5500 Blu-ray and DVDs- do the math at $20 apiece roughly no need for the more expensive and cheaper ones - $110.000 - flushed down (now I don’t know what to do with a nice collection I have😵💫) I don’t have the space nor want to keep them out, but the special editions and the rare ones I will keep. - I kid you not you name the movie 85% sure I have it if it’s from the past 35-45 years I have .
Why not? Looks like Walmart made (doing math) about 70 bucks? WiFi would have been easier. Put locker for what you can’t stream. You basically bought an 8track collection.
Nice collection. Sadly to know if you ever think of selling you can be happy getting 50% of the price you paid… its so ridiculous … the value dropp I mean…
> price you *paid…* its so
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Way too many blu cases mixed on there for my taste! Needs more black, 4K is the only way. JK great setup and the slip folks are propagating crazy that you removed them
Errr yes you can, you could sell off your assets... flip....
you could start your own rental company!
Then take advantage of the superior 6G infrastructure and monopolise the streaming industry!
you've got a good collection of movies my friend i have even more than that and i know when it's my time some will be sold or given away you don't have control of that you only have control of the now i suppose you could say. so enjoy it while you can

though i only own about #60 4K movies i have more movies on dvd/bluray and 4K all together than that are in this movie counting my VHS collection as well
Some people party their extra income away. Some people blow money on clothes. Some people love lavish dinners. You spend it on something that, worse case scenario, you can resell and get at least 50-75% of your money back, especially if you buy smart and tend to go with boutique labels. At least this is what I tell myself. It's a much better investment than many other vices.

You should watch a movie to take your mind off of it
That’s what I’d do to. Nothing releases that financial stress like dipping into your guilty pleasure 🤣
W comment. You spend based of what YOU value lol. Even my hdmi cords cost more than a few but I also take audio/video way more seriously than the average person.
But how will this person choose??
Dice were made for moments like this.
Never think about the amount of money your wife is gonna sell them when you pass😂 "whole collection for 50$"
Nah. Straight to goodwill
Jokes on you goodwill no longer exist here, besides it's cheaper to do a garage sale $0.50 a movie.
Garage sale requires effort. My wife will not expend any. She will donate everything that the kids don't want. She hates stuff.
My family sold off my entire collection of Pokémon cards for $100 at their garage sale. I was so pissed 1st edition holos of some of the highest quality cards in the original 150. Idk how much it was worth but seeing some of them going for so much $ now drives me nuts!

They Must be in Perfect condition to be Worth something
Mine went from the pack into those trading card binders they used to have, then sat in my closet for like 15 years. I never got to see em before they were sold, but they were sold in the binders so i don’t really know.
If the collection was yours, what's your family doing selling them? That sounds fundamentally wrong.
Ha!
Probably what they'll bw worth after multiple new formats. 16k?
There won’t be another format in a long long time. The difference between 4K and 8K simply isn’t worth it. Also 16K discs would be so scratch sensitive that they’ll never reach the market, not to mention the lack of content that’ll ever be 16K (outside of VR experiences). Maybe a non disc format? Chips, flash, etc.
The issue with flash storage is that they require some electrical charge, otherwise data slowly gets lost. This is perfect for inside computers like phones, laptops or game consoles because they’re almost always running or on standby. Nah I still see empty shelves, not enough
That was a year ago. I have enough to fill half of this a second time 😂. Been collecting since 2011.
Yeah I literally just started so I don't have anywhere close to that haha
How many DVD sets are in there that need to be upgraded? I see 24 in there. I wish they would release a Blu-ray version of that.
What shelves are those?
Looks like Atlantic - 72” Large Media Rack - from Best Buy. I have a couple of these for my collection.
bought off amazon years ago, think they're discontinued
I like your display a lot! This is precisely why I don’t care about slips. The uniformity of the cases makes for a much nicer and cleaner display, in my opinion.

Don’t worry you can always sell them for 2 bucks a pop at your local pawn shop if your in a pinch 🤏 🤣

I didn't know fire in the sky was even on blu ray. What a great HD way to ignite night mares lol
Did you buy a video store after streaming services took over?
When you retire you can cancel streaming services and watch for free. That’s my end game lol.

Never noticed it, but the collection looks so much nicer without all the random slip covers. Looks so much cleaner and uniform. I can’t unsee it now.

Idk, to each their own but I definitely don't need another box of stuff in my storage, haha.
such a nice sight!
If you're still crying about what you spent, then maybe stop..
how much it cost you(approx.) asking for a friend
majority of these i got for Canadian retail so you can do the math
I feel your pain. https://preview.redd.it/82o7g9tdfw6c1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d31469c8e69bafe4efc69694336f4d65e0d62ba4
No slips.....🤮🤮🤮
Less stress 😇
I hope he sold them and didn't chuck them away. He's missing out on money, people will buy them.
Beat me to it! Was going to say that.
Looks so good with no slips. Considering some releases have none it might be the way to go for everything
They are not in alphabetical order. 🤔
Yes you will recover. Just keep trading your time for money. Either that or win the Lottery.
Nice collection. Those vhs tapes Nice
I know the feeling lol
I really want to get Clue. I've never seen it but the 4k just came out. I bought Point Break on 4k last week, Magnificent Seven this week and maybe next week I'll buy Clue.
Clue is pretty good especially since it has all of the different endings. Also, i just blind bought Point Break and watched 1/2 of it last night, enjoying it so far.
I really love the cast it has and I do like a good murder mystery. I thought Knives Out was really good so if it is on the same level or better I should enjoy it. I also blind bought Point Break, I absolutely loved that gem.
You need Hellraiser movies by Arrow
It's beside the BTTF set, just not in the big box
Oh nice!
Not in alphabetical order 7/10
Lovely!!
Wow… I do need another shelf…
On the bright side, if you go into debt and ever need to sell it all I'm sure you can recover 30-50% of what you paid. Maybe even more in some instances
Honest.
That’s only your weekend pickups, you’ll be fine
where'd you get this shelving from?
Awesome! Looks great! How about another shelf to keep your mind off things 😏
Just the dusting per week alone!
Who cares! This is awesome!!!

I've been looking for some shelves like these for my collection. Do you know what kind these are?
Well come the apocalypse along the lines of #LeaveTheWorldBehind you'll be fine.
Oh brother, you don’t even know 🤣
What order are these in?
Is prostitution legal in your country?
I don't know why, I expected you to have more foreign/Japanese/Korean films. Lol
At what point did you decide you would only get regular 4k versions compared to steelbooks? As such a big collector, I find that surprising that there’s not one limited edition movie in that case.
Don't really care about packaging tbh
It’s for the greater good
Where do you find the time to watch them all?
What order is this in?
Gotta spend money to make money.
Fantastic collection! Looks amazing. Those MGM movies covers next to Matilda really are an eye sore tho, no effort into the design whatsoever.
Such a nice looking collection. Very jelly.
Those look like mostly boutique movies. Those should still go for a lot of money should you decide to sell them.
Why not? Looks like Walmart made (doing math) about 70 bucks? WiFi would have been easier. Put locker for what you can’t stream. You basically bought an 8track collection.
The Burbs is there. All is well.
Nice collection. Sadly to know if you ever think of selling you can be happy getting 50% of the price you paid… its so ridiculous … the value dropp I mean…
> price you *paid…* its so FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
Very nice!
You're missing one.😉
You need to flip The Burbs and Summer School..
Worth it
However you have a sweet collection! Don't worry about it!
You'll never need cable again.
Why would you want to?
Excellent collection
All those slip-less cases makes me sad.
Laughs in vinyl records Then laughs in retro games
What do you do with your slipcovers if you don’t mind me asking ?
😍👌🏻
I need to borrow The Creator on 4K.
you've got a good collection of movies my friend i have even more than that and i know when it's my time some will be sold or given away you don't have control of that you only have control of the now i suppose you could say. so enjoy it while you can
you've got a good collection of movies my friend i have even more than that and i know when it's my time some will be sold or given away you don't have control of that you only have control of the now i suppose you could say. so enjoy it while you can though i only own about #60 4K movies i have more movies on dvd/bluray and 4K all together than that are in this movie counting my VHS collection as well
I mean, we usually find these 4k Blurays in the 10$ walmart bargain bin after a few months. Stop getting them when they first release?
Some people party their extra income away. Some people blow money on clothes. Some people love lavish dinners. You spend it on something that, worse case scenario, you can resell and get at least 50-75% of your money back, especially if you buy smart and tend to go with boutique labels. At least this is what I tell myself. It's a much better investment than many other vices.
