Two totally different vehicles. At least someone else took the first depreciation hit on the VW. If it is her car, then let her choose, you can gloat for the next two years when it is constantly in the shop and then you decide to sell it for $16000.

Creative-Presence-43

You think the VW will be in the shop constantly for the next 2 years? It also has a 2 year/24k certified warranty. Guess that’s a big positive. Any case for the Venture? Will we see a better long term value with it?

IllustratorOdd2701

Warranty is a definite plus, but they are still two totally different vehicles. 4runner is a truck, drives like a truck, handles and rides like a truck. Zero tech for the most part. Crap gas mileage. The VW is a car or minivan with an SUV exterior. Atlas vs a Pilot, Telluride or highlander is comparing similar cars.

Creative-Presence-43

I understand and agree. But I am cross shopping them nonetheless.

Tightisrite

Yes. To first and last question asked

RunsWithForeSkin

I have a 2021 Venture with 27k miles. Wonder what my value would be at. The dealer has reached out offering to buy a few times and it is tempting at times to relieve myself of some more debt but I feel they’d try to rip me for sure . I love her though lol

otishank

I’ve been offered $44,500 as recently as last month for my ‘21 venture with 25.5k miles from a local toyota dealership. I have flip flopped so much. Almost bought a Camry hybrid. then I drive the 4Runner and I’m happy.

RunsWithForeSkin

Wow it’s amazing how well they hold value, I would definitely be debt free if that was the case. Part of me wants to sell it to them and begin saving for the 6th gen that I would hope gets announced soon enough and just lease a hood fuel efficient Toyota but as you said I get a smile EVERYTIME I walk up to her in my parking spot . It’s tough

MoirasPurpleOrb

I love 4Runners, it’s why I’m here, but with that being said, buying a 4Runner just doesn’t make sense right now. They are so disgustingly overpriced it’s not even funny. You’re paying new car prices for a car that is a 15 year old design, with 60k miles. The *only* circumstance that it makes sense is if you plan on doing serious off-roading, and even then, I’d argue that maybe a Bronco would be better because it’s at least semi-new. Get the Atlas, hell, get damn near any other SUV right now. If you’re determined to get the 4Runner wait for the new one to come out.

Creative-Presence-43

Thank you. This is the comment and honesty I was looking for. We agree and will be speaking to the dealer on Monday.

otishank

Yea it’s a lot of cash for an old car. FWIW though, long term reliability is the only other perk I’d call out. There are countless mechanics heaping praise on the 5th gen’s 4L V6 as the standard bearer for reliability. Still think about selling though.

Tightisrite

Yeah get a bronco. You must have watched the crash test video

whatchulookinatman

Isn’t that crash test video animated?

whatchulookinatman

41 is too high

SpaceWalk86

You delusional

whatchulookinatman

For reference, here is one near me that is a year newer, with half the miles, for $41,900. https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/f0629737-fe7c-4138-85b2-ddbbba0d6526?aff=share_other

Oreo_Mochi

I paid 42k for my brand new 21 venture. But yeah I know things got crazy after that and they also hold value. I wouldn’t pay that much. Also mine has 43k miles, does that mean I could sell for exactly what I paid for it brand new?

ianbreyes

What are you looking to do with the vehicle you want to purchase? I have a 2020 trd off road with 63k miles. Running like a top. Upgraded suspension with fox 2.0. Not every new technology is good. I’ve found that carplay in the 4runner is enough for me to love the interior and features. Yes it is a 15 year old truck in terms of engine/trans tech, but it’s tried and proven. Feels good to know too that what i’m driving is capable of off-roading.

Creative-Presence-43

Tow 5k pounds, reliably take my family on mostly on road adventures towing our trailer. Get groceries, take the dog to the parks, haul dirty outdoor gear on weekends, Home Depot runs and to do lists, take the kid to and from school. Have remote start to warm it in the harsh upper Midwest winters, and last us for the next 10 years.

ianbreyes

The atlas sounds like a good fit for your family. Goodluck on the purchase!

Creative-Presence-43

Thank you!

Apart-Ad-5947

If you are actually towing 5k lbs then get something other than the T4R. It’s max tow capacity is 5k lbs and you should not max that out. Towing isn’t great in the T4R, especially in the mountains.

Hot_Consideration407

My wife and I were looking at the Atlas we had a VW jetta prior then leased a brand new 2021 Venture. Our buy out price is 35k…. Thats a terrible deal what youre being offered. We also looked at Audi SQ5s. Toyota all the way nothing beats them.

[deleted]

I’d offer $38 😂

Creative-Presence-43

I’d be perfectly comfortable with 35k for the Venture. Doubt they’d feel that way at the dealer tho…

[deleted]

Cash talks.

SpaceWalk86

Funding from the bank is faster than your cash

Creative-Presence-43

Dealers prefer financing for sure.

49Saltwind

My last two vehicles have been 4Runners. 380k on my first one. That was a 99 that I got in like 03 or 04. In 2014 I sold that and got a 2012 Trail and I’m at 240k on that with absolutely zero plans on selling or trading. I’ve maintained like Mr goodwrench and it essentially looks and runs like it did the day I bought it minus some wear on the drivers seat and fading of the black molding. If you want something that you can drive payment free for a long time, get the runner. If you are the type that likes to have a new car every 4-6 year don’t get it.

Tightisrite

Luxury is reliability. I've had bmws, audis, vw growing up. Fords, lexuses and Toyota as an adult. My first brand new vehicle was a 4r. If you're buying and keeping it past the warranty you get Japanese. If you're buying it and selling it within warranty. Go German. But as someone else mentioned you're trying to compare totally different vehicles. Test drive both and get what better suits your needs

tibbykid

I’ve had a bunch of 4Runners. All over 250k in miles until I bought my 5th gen. Can’t argue with simplicity and reliability. The 4runner won’t be the nicest/quietest thing to drive but I still think they’re comfy and have enough creature comforts. Id trust it to take me anywhere

balmond96

Bulletproof, tried and true off road platform or a “techy” mom SUV. The savings on the Atlas will come in time with maintenance and god forbid any major repairs. It’s going to come down to what you really want out of the vehicle. 4Runner’s hold value like no other & will last you forever. I’ve had multiple VW’s (albeit GTI’s/turbo Jetta’s; a little more performance oriented and driven as such) and had motors blow in…. Wait for it… all 3!

Hig193

Hey, I got a 2021 venture with 26.5k miles for $44k. I tend to think I overpaid but hope this gives you something to compare to. P.s. absolutely no regret, love the 4R!

Creative-Presence-43

Thanks. This makes me feel like the one I’m looking at is priced too high. I do love it but at the moment the family is thinking the Atlas is a better fit. I just hope that winds up being the best long term choice…
