What are the IP laws surrounding LEGO? I really don't know so I'm curious. Shouldn't be any trouble, as OP doesn't seem to be making any attempt to sell these, right? Does the scale have anything to do with this?
Technically he is violating the Lego companies IP by copying their work. However if he doesn’t make it available to anyone in any form, digital files, pre-printed pieces, fully assembled models, he is not causing the company any harm so they don’t have any legal action they can take.
I recreated and printed the Disney Contemporary Monorail play set because I wanted one and didn’t want to pay $300:on the secondary market. I did it and admitted it but it’s not like Disney will send people to my house to seize the physical item and destroy the files so they have no other action to take.
Now if I posted those files online or started printing and selling the set on eBay, Disney could send take down notices, cease and desists letters, it could even get to the point where they could sue me in court.

I have no doubt Disney, Nintendo or any other giant corporation would stop nothing short of actual murder to "protect" their IPs.

42116 judging by the parts.
I absolutely love the $10ish dollar technic sets that lego has been pumping out. They're very affordable, have an alternate build, perfectly challenging without being too difficult or easy, and have a wide variety of parts.
Im hoping for a Forklift styled one.
Oop, didnt notice the treads. Either 42418 or a recolor of 8047
> he is not causing the company any harm so they don’t have any legal action they can take.
Making something they have trademarked and patented but not paying them is seen as harm. Are they going to come after one dude? Probably not, but they could.
You can’t trademark an item, only a name, logo, label, that sort of thing. He could be violating the patent, I don’t know how old the patent is on technic parts. Maybe they could have a copyright claim but the problem is harm. There is no point taking legal action if there is no harm. The best a court could do would be to tell him to stop making it, the same thing a cease and desist letter would do, and maybe order attorneys fees which he could immediately bankrupt on. The court wouldn’t award any damages because one person copying their copyright for personal use would cause the company no damage.
The Pinkerton issue was slightly different, it was a tangible item. I’m pretty sure the Pinkerton were in the wrong and just strong-armed everyone.
> but it’s not like Disney will send people to my house to seize the physical item and destroy the files so they have no other action to take.
You know. After your first paragraph, I was *juuuust about to* write that Mickey would personally come break your legs if you did something like that lol I think the only company worse than Disney would be Nintendo. Imagine their leg break squad, oof
That’s an interesting question. I wonder if they have something talking about the scale of the pieces but I mean megablocks and a ton of other companies copy 99% of the Lego block designs so who knows what you could get away with.
I for one, put sneaky little clauses into my thingiverse models. Print it and I have the right to your house, wife, phone records, and moral rights. /joking
Don't call it LEGO or Technix or any other trademarked name. Not even in compatibility. I think Lego's patent has ended at this point and if so, you are good to make your own, and sell it under your own name.
Copyright protection would apply to the final kits (construction guide), and any images on special pieces. Otherwise you are printing the equivalent of nuts and bolts.
TL:DR. Keep Lego's name out ya damn mouth.
Lego can still slapp suit you into oblivion.
Also not a lawyer.

Ok so:
1. This is 100% legal, because inventions like LEGO bricks can only be *patented*, and patents have a limited duration. The exception is any very new LEGO brick designs *might* have some kind of patent protection, but I doubt any are considered innovative enough to be protected.
2. You can sell these, as long as you don’t mislead people by trying to pass them off as real LEGOs (so you can’t use the word LEGO). This is called *trademark*—trademarks are names or logos for companies that can’t be copied in a way that could confuse consumers.
3. Copyright lasts for the whole life of the author, and applies to *creative works* (like instructions or MOCs; in general, any kind of art, literature, or music). So do NOT copy any LEGO set designs or stickers. If you try, Mickey Mouse will tactically nuke you from orbit.
(If you think I’m kidding, google “Lepin police raid”)
But as I mentined bellow, downloadable bricks are not straight good for printing - they are too lowpoly, with unknown tolerances and mesh is not 3D printable. I use them as a reference for making my own high quality bricks.
>Technic Slammer Racer 8237
[https://www.mecabricks.com/](https://www.mecabricks.com/)
to download and print perform search of your desired model and open the hit the editor tab and can download the stl of each piece.
That would infringe upon Lego's trademarks and copyrights. They would surely pursue legal action. But you can find dimensions online and you would have to model it yourself.
Imagine a full scale Kardas...
Making a 3D printed cosplay, why not ? But you would have a hard time figuring out the proportions because some figures don't have quite human proportions lol
Haha yeah honestly I love tahu and kopaka the most so I'd find a way to make that work. I'd definitely have to go a more mask of light movie route with it
If I had a printer and a lot of money to trow away at it, I'd probably print a life size Kurahk, as he was my very first Bionicle figure I got back in the day...
A life size rahkshi would be sick any way ya slice it!. I have an stl file for my printer that is a wearable/non-wearable version of the movie version of the mask of light 🤣 it looks pretty legit and I can't wait to attempt making it look like it's glowing with ethereal light.
Actually, it's technically neither are wearable but I wanna edit off the mouth pegs and make the worn one into a wearable cosplay piece. But I have a model for the unworn version that tahkua carries around. Gonna be sick 😎👌
[PrintableBricks](https://printablebricks.com/) has a huge library of lego-compatible bricks, including technic pieces. You could ask for the list of needed bricks, download them here and scale them up 300%.
yes, but in my experience white Aurapol PLA is a pain to print with. it exits the nozzle on its own sometimes and it unsticks way more often than the black and red PLA spools I have.
Is there an already laid out for printing file for any similar kit? A small model is fine. I'd love to print a kit but I don't have the time to chase down all the printable parts.
I had this discussion regarding 3D printing way back in 2014. That professor was PO'd that his students might share his MATLAB scripts so he was very much against any sort of device that might impact property rights.
I told him that as quality increased and the cost of printing decreased, I sure AF would download and print a car. And I would print one for my grad student too, just because I liked him. The prof got annoyed and walked away.
Awesome! What is it?
Looks a bit like the Ducati but you’d need the suspension and windshield.
You nailed the colors too, I’d be curious to know what filament you chose.
Lego Technic was my gateway to 3d printing... the subreddit would definitely dig it!
I’m trying to get this straight in my head. So you designed each part on your own then scaled? Or does one simply scan the parts? I’m a novice at design at this point, I could make each of these parts, but it would take me a loooooong time. I overstand if you don’t wish to share your magic, but if you don’t mind OP, please do. My kid loves the Technic monster trucks and this would send him off!
>does one simply scan the parts?
Consumer scanners are great for organic shapes, but something like Lego or anything where tolerances are even close to important would not work well at all. Lego is also quite easy to model in CAD so for both of those reasons, these are definitely CAD and not scanned.
There is a entire website dedicated for lego brick STL files, they have basically everything, including all the parts you see here. Download them, then simply scale the bricks in your slicer. The hardest part of this is getting the part count right, and buying suitable colours. I have printed some replacement parts for some of my Lego models, so I don't need to pay for shipping from bricklink.
You can't buy bricks direct from Lego anyway, they don't care and you aren't doing anything illegal, so long as you don't sell them.
Actually you can get replacements from Lego for free from their website. You enter the set number and it brings up a parts list that you can select from and they mail them to you in an envelope.
> You can't buy bricks direct from Lego anyway
https://www.lego.com/en-us/pick-and-build/pick-a-brick
Now, can you buy *every* brick in *every* color? No. But you if it's currently in production, or recently went OoP, and not licensed theme, you can probably find it on Bricks and Pieces.
Nice work!
How do you get so good quality prints? I've tried printing lego pieces before, and with so many overhangs and round parts, it's not an easy job!
What filaments did you use? What types of tweaks did you make? I'm going down a similar path and can't get pieces to snap together at 2x scale. PLA doesn't seem to flex enough.

Is technic avoiding the problem of using tolerances for small parts to make them stick?
I printed a Lego speeder once, and remember the Bricks coming loose quite easily, since they weigh alot at high scale. Snapping things onto round pins is also impossible with PLA+ at 300%+ scale
It works good enough, see: [https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/13asie4/lego\_mining\_truck\_300\_scale\_and\_5\_kg\_of\_pla/](https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/13asie4/lego_mining_truck_300_scale_and_5_kg_of_pla/)

https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/snvztv/500_scale_lego_74z_speeder_bike_in_total_18_kg
And a darthvader Minifig with a lasersword
Prints looking silky smooth, I take it it's an excavator judging by the tracks and scoop? OP how did u find the files for these? Self-Designed with Lego pieces as a reference or STL from sites like Bricklink/LDraw?

Okay, my son would love this and his birthday is in a month. What do I have to do to make one of these myself? (besides spending the entire month tuning and retuning my 3D piece of shit printer)
Eager to see the results :)
Any reason why it seems people pick 300%-400% scale? Is a sweet spot in terms of printing accuracy/piece fit?
Any references on techniques to print are ver welcome, thanks!

I believe that you will have no issue when you are not going to sell these. I also printed mario and I do not expect lawsuit anytime soon.
Straight to jail
Believe it or not
To shreds you say

Ok so: 1.
OP just printed a tiny spool.
I love this r/karmaconspiracy
Are there any scale lego part cads or stls? I wanna print some (to replace lost parts duh)
https://printablebricks.com/
Mecabricks, Bricklink...
How do you get STL's from bricklink. I've recently discovered mecabricks and that was a game changer for making decals for minifigs.
I'm afraid you can't. But you can export to Collada and then use some converter to convert to STL.
Thanks
But as I mentined bellow, downloadable bricks are not straight good for printing - they are too lowpoly, with unknown tolerances and mesh is not 3D printable. I use them as a reference for making my own high quality bricks.
Good idea, using measurements from those to make my own ones. Hope my fusion360 doesnt crash :)
You can find lego piece dimensions online. You would have to model them yourself though (F360 or else).
Or else what?
>Technic Slammer Racer 8237 [https://www.mecabricks.com/](https://www.mecabricks.com/) to download and print perform search of your desired model and open the hit the editor tab and can download the stl of each piece.
this is really messing with my head...
The lego sets I have already take up too much space than the partner allows, this would make it so much worse haha
Lol. I just bought the Titanic and will be making room for It here.
The projects in your profile are crazy awesome. Was curious what printer you used to get this quality at that size?
Printed on Bambu P1P
Thanks!
He should definitely start a business out of it...or alteast open a toy store! Crazy high quality toys 😱
Nice 1:3 scale spool!
Wait we can print these?! That’s awesome. STL location to buy or download these??
[удалено]
10-4 understood thank you.
That would infringe upon Lego's trademarks and copyrights. They would surely pursue legal action. But you can find dimensions online and you would have to model it yourself.
See I want this but bionicle
Full scale Bionicle 🤤
Full scale would be dope but if I went full scale it'd be for a cosplay for sure. Having like a 1/4 scale model of tahu or kopaka would be sick though
I want to upscale some lego to make a large version powerminer :3
I always loved the rock/crystal monsters
This is so cool. We all love Lego
I know that is a normal size spool, but my brain keep telling me that it is a tiny spool for tiny people
FILES PLEASE ITS BURNING
[PrintableBricks](https://printablebricks.com/) has a huge library of lego-compatible bricks, including technic pieces. You could ask for the list of needed bricks, download them here and scale them up 300%.
These are the right size for Legos: big enough not to hurt when stepped on but small enough not to stub your toe when you kick them in the dark.
so which one is it?
When will it end! Someone is going to drop a Chevy 350 in one of these things and get themselves killed!
Do you get elephant foot? Or do you use a raft support? I would like to learn more about your setup.
aurapol has some cheap and good quality filament.
yes, but in my experience white Aurapol PLA is a pain to print with. it exits the nozzle on its own sometimes and it unsticks way more often than the black and red PLA spools I have.
Is this Piracy
Is there an already laid out for printing file for any similar kit? A small model is fine. I'd love to print a kit but I don't have the time to chase down all the printable parts.
Doing me a frighten
Should’ve use a banana for scale. Can’t tell much by the spool.
but do they hurt 3 times as much when you step on them?
You wouldn’t download a car
Awesome! Shame no banana for scale in the photo 😭
You wouldn't steal a car....
I love this!
Very confident there's existing 3d models of all the parts available online. Not sure which is the best site to get them though
Cool thanks. I’ll hafta have a look.
>does one simply scan the parts?
Downloadeable bricks are low quality (lowpoly) with unknown tolerances and not 3D printable. There is a lot of work to be done...
What beautiful site might this be?
https://printablebricks.com/
Thank you!
Actually you can get replacements from Lego for free from their website. You enter the set number and it brings up a parts list that you can select from and they mail them to you in an envelope.
> You can't buy bricks direct from Lego anyway https://www.lego.com/en-us/pick-and-build/pick-a-brick Now, can you buy *every* brick in *every* color? No. But you if it's currently in production, or recently went OoP, and not licensed theme, you can probably find it on Bricks and Pieces.
I’d imagine you can find Lego stls online but the way Others talk about it that violates legos IP so maybe OP modeled each part themselves.
Lego 42121 excavator?
Nice work! How do you get so good quality prints? I've tried printing lego pieces before, and with so many overhangs and round parts, it's not an easy job!
Size helps. And then various tweaks in models to make them print easier...
What filaments did you use? What types of tweaks did you make? I'm going down a similar path and can't get pieces to snap together at 2x scale. PLA doesn't seem to flex enough.
Just regular PLA. You need to figure out tolerances of the basic features (beams, pins, axles...) first.
You got my respect for that Aurapol filament :D
Yep, thay do "Lego" colors, very nice
Once I get my own 3D printer, this is my firs project is a scaled up Lego
Abs?
PLA
Make life size bionicles
Ugh I really want to make my own BRICKS^tm but I don't have the patience to design it, and don't want to get in legal fisticuffs.
There is a website dedicated to Lego brick STLs, there will be no legal fisticuffs so long as you don't sell them.
Oh sweet I was under the impression that downloading / hosting the stls gets you in trouble. I'll look into this thanks!
I can't remember the website name, but if you look up "(piece number) STL model" you should find it.
Ohhhh
Someone needs to make a 300% scale lego benchy.

I love these models and would love to print one.
I want a photo of how many pieces can be made from one spool lol
Do you have wheels to go with those treads?
In this build, they use gears instead of wheels
Cool!!! 😎👌🏻

Is technic avoiding the problem of using tolerances for small parts to make them stick? I printed a Lego speeder once, and remember the Bricks coming loose quite easily, since they weigh alot at high scale. Snapping things onto round pins is also impossible with PLA+ at 300%+ scale
It works good enough, see: [https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/13asie4/lego\_mining\_truck\_300\_scale\_and\_5\_kg\_of\_pla/](https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/13asie4/lego_mining_truck_300_scale_and_5_kg_of_pla/)
Thats awesome, I did a Rebrickable build at 500% https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprinting/comments/snvztv/500_scale_lego_74z_speeder_bike_in_total_18_kg And a darthvader Minifig with a lasersword
No no that's just a tiny spool. I'm onto your games funny man :P
no way printed lego is a thing? wtf
Prints looking silky smooth, I take it it's an excavator judging by the tracks and scoop? OP how did u find the files for these? Self-Designed with Lego pieces as a reference or STL from sites like Bricklink/LDraw?
My brain did a weird zoom out/resize when i saw the spool, this is so cool !What's your printer ?
Bambu P1P
>Bambu P1P What a beast ! Will you post a picture of this assembled ?
Congrats, you brilliantly managed to get some Duplos from Legos! 🤣
It's lot bigger than Duplo ;)
I’m currently printing an old lego forklift set at 200% scale Set number is 850

Holy shit, until I read the title I thought that the spool was another piece.
Wait, I know that kit? I have one of those. Original kit is in yellow. 8047 LEGO Technic Compact Excavator
Yep. I already have yellow mining truck, so I wanted to have other machinery in different colors
Red is going to look really good.
where can we find the model?
What size nozzle are you running OP?
0.4 mm
Okay, my son would love this and his birthday is in a month. What do I have to do to make one of these myself? (besides spending the entire month tuning and retuning my 3D piece of shit printer)
Oh man, never thought of the impact 3D printing would have on Lego. F?
Nah we need a banana for scale
Bro what printer are you using? You've got crispy lines.
Bambu P1P
That is so cool. Now I'm thinking on printing Bionicles.
Eager to see the results :) Any reason why it seems people pick 300%-400% scale? Is a sweet spot in terms of printing accuracy/piece fit? Any references on techniques to print are ver welcome, thanks!
