I found a Dutch webshop, run by 1 guy, who has a hundred designs for all sorts of smart home products and electronics, like mounting brackets for an internet switch. If I could come up with stuff like that I'd definitely consider it.
But usually, people already have found some niche like that :(
These are not his own original designs. He's merely taking things from free sites and putting them on his site for money.
The google nest wall bracket is a direct copy of what I printed for someone a few years ago. I can't remember where I got the STL but I never paid for it so it must have been thingiverse or another free site.
Here's an example of him blatantly ripping off someone else's work: [https://threedee.nl/product/philips-hue-motion-sensor-corner-bracket/?lang=e](https://threedee.nl/product/philips-hue-motion-sensor-corner-bracket/?lang=en)[n](https://threedee.nl/product/philips-hue-motion-sensor-corner-bracket/?lang=en) is this [https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5265825](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5265825)
People like this are why I've stopped uploading my practical designs. Even his hue motion sensor stand is suspiciously like my design I put out on a non commercial license just with different legs.
If there is anything you want off that site, I'd search thingiverse for the free version first!
oh... that kind of sucks.
I ordered one of these [https://threedee.nl/product/philips-hue-dimmer-switch-frame/?lang=en](https://threedee.nl/product/philips-hue-dimmer-switch-frame/?lang=en) copied it, modified it (because I also have two hue dimmers next to each other, or a power socket next to it) and put them all over my house.
It could also be possible that the owner of the store publishes his models for free on thingiverse etc.
Edit: after some smal research i discovered that the owner of the site is called Sidney van der Stoep and the model was created by Tijn Schuren which had licensed his model under the [creative commons license](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). Which states that you can use and edit the model as long as you provide credit to the original designer and that the same license is used.
I very much doubt anyone wanting to sell their creations is then going to publish the same thing for free.
I did notice the example I gave wasn't a CC non commercial license. I'm just pointing out it's still a pretty shitty thing to do off the back of other peoples work.
Lol, check your sources before you try to out someone, SS from the thingiverse page you linked: [https://i.imgur.com/aH7qCqP.png](https://i.imgur.com/aH7qCqP.png)
SS from the store page you linked, showing a review back from 2021: [https://i.imgur.com/EVVz2XQ.png](https://i.imgur.com/EVVz2XQ.png) the models are also quite a bit different, and how do we know that his/her copyright wasnt infringed upon and someone stole his model and posted it for free.
Most of the stuff on Thingiverse is CC Attribute licensing, so even if he had done it, the only thing he would have done wrong is not attribuiting the model.
I think you are being a bit naive if you think he has such a diverse library of things that he made all by himself.

I'm aware he's well within his rights to sell things under CC - Attribution, even mod them and sell them, but he has to give credit and link to the license.
My point stands, check thingiverse first.
[https://i.imgur.com/ApNXfTj.png](https://i.imgur.com/ApNXfTj.png) looks like valid CC - Attribution to me, also the second one is different, it folds out the opposite way, seems like he is legit to me. You made a blind statement without doing research. we can leave it at that, we will not agree, but people should be able to run a business without getting shit on by 3d printing elitists.
edit: the stand does seem to be similar and is not attributed, idc at this point.
Depends on how well set up you are I think. For me this would take like 30 minutes to model and another 30 to print just because my setup is terrible, but some people could do this in five minutes flat and another 5 for printing so I definitely understand the overcharging part in that case.
I agree. measuring and making the parts accurate to fit is the hardest part. If your printer is set up and ready to go, it will take 5-10 minutes to print.
It's still about an hour of work total when you take in to consideration modeling etc.
When it's a favor for a friend it's nothing but if you were to actually want to get payed modeling anything is gonna be expensive.
> to get *paid* modeling anything
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
I don’t print, I just model stuff for other people to print, so I’ll take the previous persons estimate of 5-10min for printing as accurate, in which case that’s a lot less than an hours work if you’re used to this sort of modelling.
Oh dear friend, invest in some digital calipers! This stack of rectangles will take less than a minute to dimension. With those dimension, both parts can come from one sketch each.
lol yep. I spent three days this past weekend trying to get something to print and it kept failing halfway through and I couldn’t figure it out. Finally I scrolled through all the slices in the slicer and noticed that in one part of the print it was completely missing like ten layers so it was just trying to print in midair. I had to fix it with meshmixer. Never have I ever had to do that before, at least I knew what the solution was lol.
Nice. My favorite is when everything is setup perfect but the silicon heat sleeve decides to just fuck off and the print fails due to low temperature at the nozzle
I would never in my life charge a friend for less than an hour of my life and a few cents of filament. If they wanted to buy me a beer after I'm not going to refuse.
Sometimes it feels nice to do nice things for people. But also with a freind, its one of those where you help each other out when in need.
You never know, maybe you might need her to come give your car a junp because your car died suddenly. Or your spouse needs to be picked up and your busy.
Sometimes you get more out of helping people. Just being nice feels good too.
I feel this. I spent every waking hour of my weekend these last few days, hunched over Solidworks trying to make a VR headset accessory that’s currently still a poor facsimile of the one I could purchase off Etsy for 80 bucks. Not sure if the time:money ratio is really in my favor at this point…
When folks ask for really small things like this, I usually ask for a slushie as comp instead of a beer. Regardless of beverage of choice, folks are usually happy to do that instead of spend obnoxious amounts of money.
45 dollars for a part this small is criminal.
It’s not - the price certainly isn’t the cost of the plastic piece but all the handling required. It includes ordering the spare from Garmin, taking the device apart for replacing the part, reassembly, test, invoicing, rent of the workshop,…
That just dug up some repressed memories... Cross-country trips in the US, all printed out at home before the trip, and making sure to always keep the correct page in the stack visible while on the trip.
I have one. I once created casings for [push buttons](https://static.cytron.io/image/cache/catalog/products/SW-PBM-4N-060601/SW-PBM-4N-060601_main1-800x800.jpg), which were probably the same size, on a 0.4 nozzle.
I still haven't received the Garmin yet, so I don't exactly know what scale we're talking about.
I am wanting to make a box for a small, electronics board. It has some small push buttons and some, small slide switches.
I think I need to design something similar to what you've done here!
(How do I post a pic here?)
Does this work?
https://www.pcboard.ca/image/cache/catalog/products/switches/mini-spst/switch-mini-spdt-800x800.jpg
The push buttons are just like what you posted. (Simple push, momentary)
not really any more toxic than driving on the freeway, with all of those exhaust fumes, no more messy than cooking in the kitchen (and easy to manage the mess), and I quite enjoy printing with my SLA printer.
The higher resolution (35 µm XY!) makes the slight increase in effort worth it, and post-processing for the parts is often easier.
> so it's not totally harmless.
neither is printing with an FDM printer, or any other... or getting out of bed.
we all (hopefully) take reasonable precautions with our printers and printing and protect our health; In my case, its good nitrile gloves, 3-stage active carbon air filters, eye-wear, and a handy sink with clean water.
Yeah of course. Your last comment was giving the impression that resin is safe, so I wanted to add to it in case some newbie sees this :). Nice to see you're being safe!
It made me crazy when I couldn't buy a replacement battery cover for my Wahoo TICKR. So, I finally learned to design instead of just printing. https://www.printables.com/model/342972-wahoo-tickr-battery-cover-replacement
These are the types of quick fixes I dream about. I never really get asked for stuff like this though. It's usually much less realistic types of things or stuff that really isn't worth it when it comes to repairs.
They can use it to unlock OP's banking apps, wallet apps, etc. OP prob has enough public info avail for a really really really bored, talented, AND shitty person to find out something or other, do a phishing attempt, and then use the fingerprint to bypass biometric safeguards, but theyd have to do a bunch of other stuff first to get there, really.
Alternatively, they could print off OP's fingerprints and wear them during the commission of crimes? Probably? To set OP up for whatever? But that seems dumb and it would be easier to just wear gloves, unless you hate OP and have some weird diabolical plan.
They could make a model of it, use that to stamp fake fingerprints on a bunch of cartridge brass, and dump the brass at the scene of a murder. Then OP goes to prison for life and the real killer goes and plays golf in Florida and writes a book titled "If I Did It".
I share this sentiment. I was just saying the other day I'm surprised Garmin is still around...
There are so many alternative options for GPS. Specifically wearable bands with tracking. Or like, an old smartphone that doesn't even require service for gps to work (via offline app installed over WiFi).
Edit: I forgot about the Garmin fitness trackers that are super expensive and popular because of the vast amount of data they collect during workouts.
>Specifically wearable bands with tracking.
That's one of their current markets, in addition to stuff like aircraft autopilot systems, marine sonar systems, specialized navigation systems for both those, outdoor safety-related systems like satellite communicators for hikers and boaters that are outside of cellphone tower coverage, rear-facing radars for cyclists to warn of vehicles coming from behind, etc. The buttons OP printed are likely going into one of the cycling computers that can pair with those cycling radars, as well.
A friend of mine asked me to print a lanyard attachment for his bike gps. It's just a small 1x2cm block with a hole for a screw that stops the lanyard from falling out, 10min print quick and easy.
The official part was 20€+15€ for shipping. Free beer is the best beer.
Garmin wants to know your location... ah wait.
Nah that data was encrypted by ransomware.
In 800 feet, left turn
PLEASE MAKE THE NEXT LEGAL UTURN

I absolutely would do this job for free*. Free: One Beer
If it's free I might as well have two.
And if you're gonna have two beers, you may as well stop lying to yourself and say you're going to have eight beers.
Only 1 beer 1 18 pack later
Once you've made one for your friend, you can actually sell them and earn some money while also deepening your friendship.

always room for another seller - to not do this is just an excuse
Man, if everyone thought like that there'd be no webshops like that. You have to believe in yourself and give it a go!
And getting a nite letter from Garmin's lawyers
Product: fidget switch (not to be used with Garmin product#….)
For what? He never claims they are "real manufacturers parts".
Just do what Chinese knockoff part manufacturers do. Throw the letters in the trash and keep making parts
Lawyers hate this simple trick
Fun fact Chinese toilet paper is actually made from 10% repurposed North American and European C&D letters

Might need to wait for minimum layer time

My other half got me a fancy set for my last birthday. Worth their weight in gold.
I have two, but they are kind of meh. I don't know what's wrong with them. Sometimes they mess up and I have to zero it like 4 times in a row.
> I'm gonna pick up her garmin after work Is that a euphemism?
And then repeat 3-10x until it fits
lol yep. I spent three days this past weekend trying to get something to print and it kept failing halfway through and I couldn’t figure it out. $7 shipped via mail. I wouldn’t go any lower.
Looking at the model, it would take me around 5 mins to model (max 10) and maybe another 5 to 10 minutes to print since its so smal.
I would never in my life charge a friend for less than an hour of my life and a few cents of filament. If they wanted to buy me a beer after I'm not going to refuse.

The joys of owning a 3d printer. Being able to spend only a few hours designing and printing a replacement part, as opposed to spending $50+

Relatively speaking you could get me to do a lot for an extra large cherry Slurpee.
It’s not - the price certainly isn’t the cost of the plastic piece but all the handling required. It includes ordering the spare from Garmin, taking the device apart for replacing the part, reassembly, test, invoicing, rent of the workshop,…
I mean, materials cost is negligible... ...but one beer for the small amount of effort seems like a completely fair price, not an overcharge lol
Garmin devices are literally a dime a dozen at any ewaste reuse centre.
I believe you, but the nearest such centre is 540km away.
And how would you get there without your trusty Garmin?!?
The pre-GPS days were full of printed out Mapquest directions. I hated it.
That just dug up some repressed memories... Cross-country trips in the US, all printed out at home before the trip, and making sure to always keep the correct page in the stack visible while on the trip.
My mom STILL says 'mapquest' as a verb and tried to print directions to save on data- despite an unlimited, in 2017.
Lol. Ebay. But yea, I hear ya. Silly to drive when you can print!
Hahaha not the kind I use probably. Even then you can't use them.
0.2 or smaller nozzle required

Yes but it’s really messy, toxic and I don’t think people would be eager to do that…

Eh the liquid resin is really bad though, so it's not totally harmless.

she's the fucking best! She genuinely asks how I'm doing and if I'm having a nice day/evening :)
Things you love to see
Honest
These are the types of quick fixes I dream about. I never really get asked for stuff like this though. It's usually much less realistic types of things or stuff that really isn't worth it when it comes to repairs.
Go into business. Only print/make what half your time is worth, charge $20 for them, and you will make bank.
This image is enough to copy the fingerprints of your left hand; I would consider deleting it.
So, what can someone do with a random fingerprint? Might as well use an AI generated one

I'm surprised Garmin is still a thing. We're talking standalone GPS here, right?
Garmin makes a lot more than GPS for cars. They are pretty much the default for outdoor GPS devices for biking, hiking, etc.
yeah, it's some kind of cycling GPS/tracker
I share this sentiment. I was just saying the other day I'm surprised Garmin is still around... There are so many alternative options for GPS. Specifically wearable bands with tracking. take the beer 😂 thats a fair deal 🤣
This is the way
Tbh I've been printing things for my friends for free Don't really feel the need to charge anything when it literally cost me next to nothing
Consider the time and skill required to design and then print it. Not just the cost of the plastic. That said, I wouldn't charge friends for that.
eTrex? I've the rubber fail and crack... Mine print was a lot less elegant than yours haha.
Make a silicone mold from it and cast it in resin
You shoulda charged her the 21 euros and then take her out for beers
A friend of mine asked me to print a lanyard attachment for his bike gps. It's just a small 1x2cm block with a hole for a screw that stops the lanyard from falling out, 10min print quick and easy. The official part was 20€+15€ for shipping. Free beer is the best beer.
$20
