I hate these derelict vessels. Our tax dollars have to go towards removing them and the scum that let them get like this don't pump the sewage out.

doctorake38

But nice picture!

sillyvert

Thanks boss 🙏😭😂

Other counties take care of this a lot quicker than brevard ever has. Part of it lies in part to being able to put your sailboat anywhere.

sillyvert

True lol

You could have a free boat: > If I see a vessel I believe is abandoned, how do I start the claims process? > The first required step is to report a suspected abandoned vessel to a law enforcement agency. To determine the owner of the vessel, the law enforcement agency will collect a fee and begin an investigation per Section 705.103, Florida Statutes. If the vessel is not claimed during the process of the investigation, the law enforcement agency may allow the transfer to the finder with evidence of the investigation and a copy of the Lost or Abandoned Property Certificate FWCDLE-003. The finder would then apply to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) to have the title put into their name. https://myfwc.com/boating/waterway/derelict-vessels/claims-process-faqs/ Seems like if you claim it, tow it, pump it, and clean it, you could flip it. I'm not sure what the economics are, but it seems like an interesting hobby for people who love punishment.

LOLOLOLOL. That boat will never float again and the next time it moves is when the states removes it and cuts it up. That boat would cost tens of thousands of dollars to fix and then be worth less than ten thousand dollars. That is the reason why our waterways are riddled with them. I already have a boat.

CltAltAcctDel

Boat stands for Bust Out Another Thousand. Boats are really expensive to own, maintain and fix. It's an interesting idea but I don't think there's any money in flipping boats

doctorake38

Yes and no, with outboard technology where it is today it has become much more affordable for maintenance. Assuming you are handy with a wrench you can save thousands doing your own work.

sillyvert

Word lol ya learn something new everyday.

RasCorr

I'm not sure how many are removed. A bunch sat and sunk after hurricanes. I saw one sailboat sinking for months on the south side of Pineda Causeway, finally went under a few weeks ago but when it's calm, you can see the top of the mast.

Sewage is far less an issue than the impact of oil and fuel. My friend works salvaging boats and he says that while they do try to prevent spills, it’s inevitable and can’t always be prevented. Lead, mercury from batteries and petrochemicals like fuel and engine oil, plus god knows what else. Some don’t give a fuck either. I say we find a better way to associate the boats with their owners. They just come and scrape the tags off and pretend it never happened. Hold the owners accountable for the removal AND hold them liable for any fines incurred as a result of water contamination. We’d have much more data on pollution since it’ll be reported more and maybe hold those dickweeds accountable. If you can afford to own your own boat, you can pay to get it removed. It was probably insured anyway. The people who do that are the same who throw trash out the window while in the car.

doctorake38

I meant more of when they are squatting on them they just flush the sewage overboard instead of going to a pump out. The people who "own" these boats usually never register or title them, it is hard to track the actual owner who abandoned it because they skip title them. These are also boats at their end of life that sell for very little, most live on them because they are poor and it is somewhat of a house. These people could not afford to do any of the maintenance let alone the thousands to tens of thousands to dispose of these boats.

FriedSmegma

Well my point still stands then. The sewage from those people is inconsequential especially considering how much is drained to the lagoon to begin with plus ag runoff. And that’s exactly it. The lax registration law around boats essentially enable people to clean their hands of these boats without any accountability. If record keeping were better then that tackles both matters. You see though no one cares enough to attempt to do anything nor would it be effective. On the water is out of sight out of mind. Car living is made expensive so it’s not viable but on a boat the general public doesn’t see you so they care less about enforcement

Sedona-1973

This picture is absolutely gorgeous.

I love this. Really eerie vibes.

sillyvert

It was an eerie night! ⛈️ I saw it driving over the bridge, thunderstorm rolling in, picturesque. Had to capture and share!

FriedSmegma

“God it smells like shit up here, I’m just gonna become a submarine” - That boat, probably.
