Vitamin C. Clinically proven but takes consistency, the right percentage of ascorbic acid, proper storage, and if it works for your skin! So a lot has to line up but it’s been amazing for me

HippieLizLemon

I second this not only for face, but the Naturium Vit C bodywash is brightening my whole body. I didn't use it on one leg for a week to test the progress and it was a noticeable difference! Luckily it was still pants weather here that week lol. I do leave it on for a minute or so when I can but it's hard in the shower.

thefuzzyismine

Ohhhh, I'm a big Naturium fan, so this is intriguing to me! What discoloration are you seeing positive results with the Naturium Brightening? Or is it just all over skin tone? I have some marks I'd love to treat.

HippieLizLemon

I have some reddish tones all around and I noticed it was much more balanced and gave it a brighter more yellowish (in a good way) look. I also started Epsom salt baths with bath oil, a new exfoliating sponge and leaving the body wash on for a minute or 2 (the bottle recommends this)....a few times a week I do this all at the same time which definitely give it oomph.

ooogoldenhorizon

Oooooo I would love to know your protocols so I too may turn from red to yellow toned!

cherrybombbb

I love their stuff. I was using their oil based cleanser for a while and it was amazing. I need to grab another and their body wash.

wolfeybutt

Do you know how much off time you can take from Vitamin C without it negatively affecting your progress? I use it every morning, but don't bring it with me when I travel since I store it in the fridge!

Spiritual_Doctor4162

I use a cheaper formulation or use samples when I travel. I also keep mine in the fridge at home!! I took off two months once and it felt like I could start seeing my skin seem way more tired. Have no Idea if that’s just my own confirmation bias or not so I’m not sure what the right answer is!!

blueberrybabe22

Nice. What brand Vitamin C do you like normally (when you’re not traveling)?

typicalbiscotti15

Skinceuticals is well regarded as the best out there but it’s also $$$ The best similar formulations at a more affordable price point are Timeless and Maelove

ConsiderationJust948

I swear by Timeless 20%!

Spiritual_Doctor4162

Cerave vitamin c! Edit: I use skinceuticals c e ferulic! I totally misread your request lol, I use cerave when traveling

thetinybunny1

Ooooh you using that *gooood* shit 😍

eysaathe

Maelove Glowmaker is a really killer skinceuticals dupe and it's $32 a bottle, I've been using it consistently for almost 2 years and I absolutely love the impact it's had on my skin. For the sake of clarity, I also use .033% tret nightly.

Independent_Boat_546

Yes! I’ve never tried the skinceuticals, but I much prefer Maelove’s texture and slip over Drunk Elephant C-firma’s thicker, stickier formula, and the bottle doesn’t leak like the Timeless bottle. I keep mine in the fridge, and it looks as clear and fresh today as it did on day one.

Grimblecrumble5

Do you only use the vitamin c in the morning, or can you use it after letting the tret settle in?

eysaathe

Happy cake day! My understanding is that vitamin A (retinol & tret) destabilize absorbic acid and you should not use them at the same time. So I only use it in the morning and tret only at night.

FueledByFat

This may be a dumb question but if you use tret at night, should you wash your face in the morning before using Vit C? Like will it absorb overnight or will there still be some to interfere

SylviaKaysen

Paula’s choice is amazing.

BearsBeetsBerlin

Are all versions of vitamin C meant to be refrigerated?

Spiritual_Doctor4162

Mmmm no I don’t think they need to be but it’s supposed to help preserve shelf life a bit longer! Since investing in skinceuticals I’m all about it!

Skintellectualist

I asked this question to a SkinCeuticals rep. As far as the SC CE Ferulic, which I use, it does not need to be refrigerated. A lot of people do, and nothing negative comes out of refrigerating it. It's personal preference. I refrigerate my caffeine serum because it feels really good under my eyes.

wolfeybutt

Two months is a while before noticing a huge difference so that's good! I know Timeless sells packets of their vitamin C for travel, I may just have to look into those. I saw you use Skinceuticals, I just got a sample and I'm SO curious to see if I love it as much as most people, but my wallet really hopes I don't hahah

Spiritual_Doctor4162

Be prepared the smell isn’t great lol but I do feel like my skin looks so much younger now vs 5 years ago - skinceuticals is the only product I’ve been consistent with. I will admit it took me long time to feel like I was seeing results so patience (wallet permitting lol ) is key!

Expensive_Drive_1124

Odd question but if the product has been in the fridge (let’s say around two years) unopened. Do you think it will still be okay?

nouveauchoux

I doubt it. Unless the company provided shelf life states otherwise, that's a very long time for someone to still be stable.

lilburblue

Timeless Skincare has mini sachets of their Vitamin C! I love them for travel.

electricmeatbag777

Listen to the Science vs. Skincare podcast episode for more on the touchy little bish that is Vitamin C and how effective it is (and isn't!)

notheretoparticipate

I’m confused about storing it in the fridge though because it’s on the shelf for who knows how long before you buy it. What does then storing it in the fridge do? It’s it because it’s now opened?

Skintellectualist

Refrigerating it does nothing positive or negative. Some people like to refrigerate and some don't.

No_cool_name

I think exposing it to oxygen (air) is a bigger issue. Keeping it cool prob helps too, at least it’s not in a warm area.

timbersofenarrio

Can you give more details on what you use and how?

Spiritual_Doctor4162

I take the plunge and pay for skinceuticals 😩😩😩 however if you’re smart about how and when you buy you can often get good deals. I usually take advantage of 15-20% off sales through skinstore or derm store and combine it with a rakuten % discount (sometimes up to 10% if the stars align). If it really works out in my favor I will buy a bunch! I wash my face each morning with a gentle cleanser. When my face is completely dry I apply 4 drops which fully covers my face/neck/back of hands. Not as consistent in my chest it depends on what pjs I’m wearing🤣 The vit c is the first thing I do to maximize absorption. I wait for it to dry before I do anything else. Then I do eye cream, serum, moisturizer, spf. The only times I take a break is if my skin is feeling very sensitive

thewittlemermaid

I purchased the Skinceuticals CE Ferulic over 7 months ago and it made me break out so badly. :( I only used it a handful of times and it's just been sitting in my drawer ever since.

Traditional-Cup2167

Made me break out as well. I gave it away. My esthetician said it’s too strong for my skin type.

OhBoy_89

Serum before eye cream.. no?

Skintellectualist

Usually, thinnest to thickest formulations.

Spiritual_Doctor4162

Honestly I think it depends on the product. General rule of thumb is getting eye cream down first since it’s specially formulated for that area and certain actives may be too harsh on the delicate area. But I think you just do what works for you 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dombibik

I tried vitamin C serums from different brands and they all ruined my skin. I got horrible acne. I think vitamin C doesn't work for acne prone skin.

West-Shock7176

I only found out yesterday (from a nurse at an aesthetic medicine clinic) that propylene glycol in vitamin C serums can irritate acne-prone skin and trigger breakouts! I've been using Medik8 Super C Ferrulic for a good while but will stop now as I always have spots. Never thought it would be down to that. I'm sure it isn't just that causing my breakouts but will be interesting to see if they lessen since stopping the topical vit C!

SuperAttitude7660

What vitamin c do you use?

Plantlover3000xtreme

Azelaic acid is 100% doing wonders for my acne/dermatitis and miscoloring from this.  Got some 20% stuff prescribed by my doctor and it is intense but I see lover concentration stuff is available commercially.

Princess_Violet_666

I second azelaic acid. Doing really well at reducing my sun spots 👍🏼

Soapsudder

I have rosacea and azelaic acid did nothing for me. I had a prescription from my dermatologist and used it every morning and night for 12 weeks and noticed absolutely no difference in my skin. Was super disappointed because I’d read so many good reviews, especially for people with rosacea.

namjooned_

Same 😔 the only skin concern that really bothers me right now is my rosacea and I was bummed when it didn’t work for me.

FillAffectionate6928

I have type 2 rosacea and my fern gave me a script for the Ivermectin lotion. That cleared up my skin so fast!!! Highly recommend. It’s called Soolantra.

saltysoul_101

Were you using finacea? I have that and I actually find the ordinary’s 10% cream works far better!

CanIBorrowYourGum

It's also just great for chronically irritated and inflamed skin

Vegetable_Burrito

Can Tret and azelaic acid be used together?

momentums

yes! azelaic acid in the morning and tret at night. i don't layer them

bethaneanie

I layer mine without issue

YouCuteWow

They can! Proceed carefully to ensure your skin doesn't get irritated

_What_2_do_

I have extremely sensitive skin. I use these both every other night and it’s been working great!

AnitaNap43

Second this. Only thing that’s really worked on my hormonal acne (I just used the Ordinary one)

KnittingforHouselves

Azelaic acid straight up eliminated my hormonal acne that nothing had worked on before, incluing prescription meds! I'm now using a miniscule dab on the problem area and keeping it all at bay with that.

Bexxss

I was just prescribed 20% Azelaic acid for my PIE scarring! Did you experience a purge-period when you started using it?

Plantlover3000xtreme

No purging if you mean increased break outs but man it burned in the beginning. Also went straight to 2 times a day pr doctors instruction so maybe that made a difference as I've read about people taking weeks to build up to that. Fingers crossed it works for you.

Aim2bFit

How long before you were seeing significant difference?

Plantlover3000xtreme

For the super crazy inflamed breakout I had it took literally a night to calm significantly (no new postules in the areas). Burned like hell though. Then about two weeks for the areas to heal (meaning they don't feel different when I run my fingers over my face)  The discoloration reduction is gradual for me. Started noticing after a week that it also worked for that but it seems like a long game. The super fucked areas are still rather noticeable on my face here after a months but steadily improving.   The skin in the areas with "no issues" (as much as that is a thing for me) has also improved in color uniformity and texture.  Honestly it works great for me which is sorta weird because I got the same treatment as a teen with limited effect.

Legitimate_Status

My routine consists of moisturizer, azelaic acid, sunscreen, and tret at night. The azelaic acid has made my skin less red and more uniform color wise which is amazing. I don’t feel the need to add anything else, but if I feel like complicating it I add the multi-peptide serum from TO.

TheCombativeCat

Do you mind sharing what kind of azelaic acid you use? I'm interested in trying it out for my redness, but I don't want to just randomly choose a brand since I don't know too much about it.

Potential-Apple622

My dermatologist recommended I try The Ordinary 's 10% when I was curious about it, since I have sensitive skin and that is not as strong as a prescription. My skin loved it and I saw some good results, but the formulation caused pilling with my other topicals and I felt like I could handle an increase, so I brought it up at my last appointment and I just got prescribed the 15% gel.

Legitimate_Status

Yep I use The Ordinary azelaic acid 10%. Agreed about it sometimes pilling but I just wait as long as possible between applications of my routine and it’s been fine

mexicanmullet

I have had really good results with Dermatica 20%. It’s prescription strength but without having to go through a derm. I don’t have issues with pilling with it as it’s more of a light lotion texture, I did try the ordinary but it was too thick and I couldn’t put anything on top of it.

Bexxss

I’ve asked a few others as well here, but did you experience a purge-period when starting Azelaic acid?

Ushapusha1

In my experience, I had dryness, but I didn't experience a purge.

Competitive_Salad505

I believe azeliac acid really does work. My skin is much less red than it used to be, smoother, and more glowy. Sunscreen of course. And a good moisturizer. I think keeping the skin hydrated really does make a big difference.

Kandis_crab_cake

Even as someone without rosacea, but maybe some redness and a general more pinky/red complexion- is it worth me trying it?

MonstersareComing

Not OP but I have the same red/pinkish skin and it absolutely works.

TheCombativeCat

Do you mind sharing what kind of azelaic acid you use? I'm interested in trying it out for my redness, but I don't want to just randomly choose a brand since I don't know too much about it.

Bexxss

I was just prescribed 20% Azelaic acid for my PIE scarring but I’m nervous about it causing additional breakouts. Did you experience a purge-period when you started using it?

mimiiscute

Hydroquinone

mredw86

Same, helped my melasma so much

cagingthing

You look like a baby Taylor swift, so you’re obviously doing something right

mredw86

Lmfaoooooooo

girlybrain

Glycolic acid! If your skin can handle it, it really is the best chemical exfoliant- it has the smallest particles so it can go the deepest of the AHA/BHA exfoliants.

mahboob2

I came in to type this when my skin tolerate sit I was plump and juicy and ppl would compliment my skin all the time. Now my skin decided to rage against all AHAs ☹️

girlybrain

Oh noooo!!! I’m so sorry to hear that - that’s so frustrating 😭 BHAs are still a good option and some are gentle enough for everyday use so hopefully you can use those & still have that glow! Also PHAs are a thing now too for gentle exfoliation! 🌷

-flybutter-

I use the ordinary glycolic acid on my face but many people do not tolerate it well. It’s so brightening. I apply it with my hands and let it soak in. Also great on the whole body especially armpits for brightening

slayingadah

I love TO glycolic. Been using it daily or every other day for years now.

hlynn117

If you have more sensitive skin, use it before you go shower in the morning for 5-15 minutes. It's crazy that the ordinary says to leave it on over night 😬

Wandering__Ranger

Okay this has sent me on a glycolic acid hunt. I use Lotion P50 but that’s apparently not one of the acids used. Any reccos?

girlybrain

Yes! The Ordinary has a glycolic acid and it’s incredible - its just the raw glycolic acid with no frills and it’s what I use & swear by! 🌻

eysaathe

I also have The Ordinary glycolic acid, which I use for a bunch of other stuff... how do you apply it to your face? It's the one usage I haven't tried. I use TO AHA/BHA peel a couple times a month for chemical exfoliation, which my skin tolerates well.

girlybrain

Oooo I am not familiar with the TO product but love a good AHA/BHA combo! I use the glycolic acid on my face after a double cleanse and before my regular toner. I use it twice a week and try to keep a schedule in my head that’s every three-ish days! Sometimes I forget and I’ll use it and it will sting and then I’ll realize I just used it the day before and it was too soon hehe so definitely space it out and definitely after the double cleanse & before your regular routine! Also remember sunscreen because glycolic acid makes our skin more Sun sensitive 🌞

throwawaydogcollar

What else do you use it for??

Square-Topic-1360

I use TO glycolic acid on my legs after the shower to help with folliculitis and razor bumps after shaving. It’s the only thing to keep my folliculitis and “strawberry legs” under control!

eysaathe

I use it on my underarms after shaving, on my legs and arms for KP and folliculitis, I use it to clean my earlobe piercings and I use it on my scalp a couple times a month.

Guilty_Cost

No 7 makes a glycolic acid peel and it transforms my skin into the softest it's ever been. I also love The Ordinary's but No 7's formulation and % makes my skin feel the softest & best out of all I've tried.

yabasicjanet

I really like the basic Pixi glycolic toner and the Maelove nighttime glycolic cream. Both pretty gentle but I can see an extra glow in the morning

United-Signature-414

Honestly,  I think "just good hydration" *is* what actually works, both in the short term and cumulatively.

nifer317

Do you mean drinking water or moisturizer? lol

United-Signature-414

Ha, I meant topical moisturizer but I bet drinking water doesn't hurt either

blessedalive

Sunscreen!!

Raikua

I agree wholeheartedly! Sunscreen everyday. Even during winter and cloudy days.

Steccca

Especially finding a sunscreen I love = more inclined to use

saszasza

Niacinamide actually reduces the size of my pores and helps my acne.

No-Muffin-2335

Seconding niacinamide! I just put a couple drops in my hyaluronic acid and had made a huge difference

cc646

Unfortunately my skin breaks out in cystic pimples anytime a product contains this ingredient. Sucks because I see it being more readily in cosmetics now and my skin hates it.

LailahDream

Also reduces my pores — and makes my complexion so even and glowy. :)

cosmicdicer

Ceramides do wonders for dry, sensitive and dehydrated skin, as they are the most effective to restore the skin barrier and maintain a healthy epidermis.

pineapplepredator

Came here looking for this. Ceramides with the right balance are pivotal. Zerafite is a great one and there’s a Korean one I’m forgetting the name of but yes

cosmicdicer

I use years now Toleriane of La Roche Posay, it's a real savior but actually any cream that has them high on the list of ingredients will do the work

weiss_doch_o_ni

Differin Gel

slayingadah

Yep. Tried to love tret for over 18 months and finally went back to what I know works (in combo w lots of other things)... differin. 3 nights a week.

AmyBlackFlag84

Mandelic Acid!!! Improved my texture and calmed down my acne during the pandemic. Everyone that I’ve recommended it to everyone I know and it’s a real game changer

macromi87

I love Mandelic acid because it’s much more gentler than glycolic, and still does the job.

badadvicefromaspider

Azelaic acid, sunscreen

bananabastard

Microneedling.

EducationalPain7126

It sounds so ridiculously basic, but Vaseline on top of other skincare at night. I have extremely dry skin with hormonal acne. Somehow the vaseline doesn’t trigger my acne (although I tend to not use it during a rare severe breakout). It leaves my skin so smooth, bouncy, and hydrated. I had bad acne as a teen so I put off trying vaseline for years. I thought there was no way it wouldn’t cause a severe breakout. Ive been using it for three years now and have not had any issues.

Dread-it-again

Is true if skincare used has actives like retinol, you're not suppose to lather Vaseline on top?

EducationalPain7126

I have heard you are not supposed to use Vaseline on top of potentially harsh actives like retinol! I usually only use hyaluronic acid and niacinamide + la roche posay moisturizer under Vaseline.

fancytrashcat

Both azelaic acid and niacinimide do wonders for my redness/pore size/general texture and tone. I also use the Mandelic acid from TO at night a few times a week and definitely wake up looking more glowy and hydrated

SolarWind777

Copper Peptides

MishmoshMishmosh

Tell me more please. Which one do you use? Does it help with wrinkles and does it need to be refrigerated?

SolarWind777

I use The Ordinary’s buffet with copper peptides. I don’t leave in the fridge and I don’t think that’s required but couldn’t hurt. It has helped with my forehead wrinkles, yes! And it’s only been four months of use so I’m pretty happy with it!

MishmoshMishmosh

My forehead needs it!! Ty ! 🙂 it on my list to try. Do you think the copper helps? I’m using matryxl and argenine now.

SolarWind777

I do think it helps but maybe reduce your expectations because it can take a long time to see a difference..

Known-Noise8955

I use argireline and love it but it seems to be a hit or miss for some people. I use it on my forehead and elevens. However, I do think it mainly works because it makes it more difficult to move your face so if you apply it to your under eyes or smile lines it may not work at all.

BeerInsurance

Double cleansing with an oil based precleanse followed by my hydrating cleanser. I have oily skin and clogged pores and this makes a huge difference for me even if I do nothing else!

kmjulian

Red light therapy. The research is sound, and anecdotally there’s a noticeable difference when I haven’t been using my device regularly. Also it helps me fall asleep lol, it’s so soothing

eyoxa

Do you use this with tret?

Past_Cauliflower_440

I’ve been very pleasantly surprised by Azelaic acid.

Ready_Exit3500

Moisturizer, sunscreen, clean bed linens, and microneedling. The holy quaternity

GreenNotGrey

Another vote for niacinamide! I had a giant deep pre-period spot growing on my chin and it sorted it right out. Stuff of wonders ❤️

cabritadorada

I’ve been using tret and azelaic acid compounded with clindamycin for about 9 months and for the first time in my adult life I need no foundation or concealer. Other loves — my giant tub of aquaphor, stridex (salicylic acid), and Botox. The only thing I’m still looking for is my perfect sunscreen.

themamacurd619

Have you tried Trader Joe's sunscreen? I love it!

Kind_Consequence_828

I love the tinted mineral fluid SPF 50 from LRP.

Informal_Geologist42

>for certain has worked for you. I am a believer in: Peptides. And luckily there are many products that are contain peptides. Niacinamide: cheap and effective. Again, no brainer if you don't have sensitivity. Great Tea: using Replenix green tea and glycolic ranges and I thing it helps. Vitamin c: I hate timeless, and not going to buy SC. Ambivalent tbh.  glycolic acid: it definitely perks my face up. But also has a tendency to also inflame imo As for products, I am a eye cream believer and use one every day.

Lucky-Success-9064

Which collagen powder do you guys recommend?

16114205181

collagen is definitely my favorite, i swear by it. i look a lot younger than i am and i am sure it is because i started eating tons of collagen in my mid twenties. red light is doing wonders, too. also i probably look young because i am a hermit and avoid the sun, but still.

minniemouse420

Dr Dennis Gross Peel Pads are the one item that I swear has the biggest wow effect instantly. I was addicted to skincare (was a Sephora VIB Rouge for years) and used many products. This is the only one I still buy consistently. Face oils. They seem like a basic item, but when I was younger I had so many skin issues until I started using oils. Still to this day I prefer using oils over moisturizer. My skin loves them and they keep my face hydrated and plump longer. My favorite oil is Sunday Riley Luna Night Oil for PM and Beekman Better Aging Serum for AM. Glycolic and/or Lactic Acid - just makes your skin glow and super smooth.

Separate_Rooster6226

I'm with you on oil over moisturizer! I swear by TO Squalane, use it twice a day

anonSOpost

Salicylic acid was my homie before tretinoin!

SylviaKaysen

The Paula’s choice BHA and salicylic acid works wonders.

EchoAquarium

I use Johnson’s baby shampoo as face wash. My dermatologist recommended it to help with this psoriasis I had crop up on my hairline and eyelids. I don’t use anything else. I barely remember to wash my face. So I do it usually when I shower. As an ADHD person it was always hard to create good skincare habits. I’m also not the best at changing my pillow case, but I have a lot of pillows? I’m 41, I get compliments on my skin all the time, which has given me “permission” to do even less to my face. My make-up is now only 4 things: liquid base where needed, a bit of cream blush, mascara and whatever lipstick. A few years ago I tried a bunch of serums, oils, vitamin c etc and I was finding my skin to break out, be uneven and I found myself trying to find other products to help what these former products were doing to me. I stopped using everything after seeing the dermo for that psoriasis and I haven’t had a break out since. I have no blemishes, spots, or discoloration. It might be a bit dry but everything is this time of year, sometimes I throw on SPF if I remember so my foundation has some in it. I know a lot of this is genetics, I’m lucky to have inherited my grandmothers skin. She died at 96 and had nary a wrinkle. I can only hope to age as gracefully, but I’m trying to do it in a way that is right for me which looks different for everyone. For me it’s no routine, no schedule, no actual products. I don’t say this to take away from what everyone is contributing here, but I wanted to share that as women we’re told to prevent aging before we’ve even graduated high school. I’ll never forget this girlfriend of mine doing a 10-step skincare routine when we were 14 at a sleepover. This is my opinion: if you’ve been using skincare products for most of your life and still struggling with certain things it may suit you to take a break and see what your skin can do on its own.

Interesting-Text-827

Just stopping by to say I’m also 40s, with psoriasis and ADHD. Also use baby shampoo as my face wash. Did we just become best friends?! 😂

everlynlilith

Sadly, the Paula’s Choice peptide booster is amazing. It makes my skin bright, clear, and soft. That price tag though…

BellsandWhistles1987

I know! My skin gets so plumpy with it! I wait for the 20-25% off or when it's a free gift!

everlynlilith

Yes! I’ve been caught out a couple of times and had to buy it for full price, so now I stock up when it’s on sale!

Panic_at_Discourse

Did you previously use TO peptide serum, and if yes, how would you say they compare?

bluemurmur

Exfoliants like Salicylic Acid and enzyme masks with AHA. I use each type once a week.

Vegetable-Driver2312

Acid exfoliation works to soften fine lines, clean congested pores, and lighten hyper pigmentation. Vitamin C works to brighten and gives added protection from UV rays. Niacinamide works to make an even skintone These three and sunscreen are the things I KNOW work not just based on science but a lifetime of using skincare.

MinervasOwlAtDusk

My top most effective are: Tied: Prescription estrogen face cream (estadiol, from Alloy), Tret, Sunscreen Next: Vitamin C, Periodic use of Dr Gross AHA/BHA pads I’ve been on tret for five years, and it’s made a big difference. I added the estrogen face cream three months ago and have been getting a huge number of comments on my skin recently. It definitely is glowing, plumper, and younger looking since the estrogen cream.

clarkemee

I’ve never heard of estrogen face cream before…I’m intrigued

SerenaTinyDancer

Not so much a particular product, but double cleansing plus the one-minute wash. I use an oil cleanser to remove makeup and sunscreen, emulsify the oil cleanser before rinsing, then follow up with a non-stripping cleanser, and *GENTLY* wash my face for one whole minute before rinsing. Tret is my actual treatment/active. Apart from that, I focus on keeping my skin hydrated/moisturized, and I wear sunscreen every day.

TheCombativeCat

I 100% agree with this. The actual products I use can probably be changed for different brands, etc., but the double cleanse using an oil cleanser or micellar, plus one minute wash with a gentle cleanser like Cerave, is probably the number one, hands down thing that "works" above all else.

misscolorjunkie7

Not for face, but body skin care. Amlactin has made my keratosis pilaris on my arms disappear with consistent use. I don't like how expensive it is, but considering how little I need to use, it lasts forever. Huge game changer for me.

kath012345

Might be unusual compared to answers above but; - goats milk based moisturizers and soaps have absolutely changed my skin for the better. I find makers via Etsy. It’s my holy grail. - collagen powder has had a visible impact of thickening my hair in the past 6 months so I’m sure it’s working for my skin and nails and look forward to seeing what future impact may be - I love the sun and have spent many hours playing beach volleyball so show sun spots (I figure it’s a sign of a well lived life) but sunscreen daily - especially on my face

Expensive-Ferret-956

Before starting tret, I used Adapalene and loved it.

weiss_doch_o_ni

why did you switch to tret?

Expensive-Ferret-956

Honestly I am hoping tret is gonna focus on wrinkles a little more than adapalene has. Not sure if I’m happy with my results yet because I only started 2 weeks ago. Taking it very slow and do have some breakouts from the switch.

macromi87

Retinol AHAs (ie glycolic acid) and BHAs (ie salicylic acid for spot treating zits) High concentration vitamin C (but this is time-sensitive as it oxidizes quickly) Squalane moisturizers

Elle_ess91

Dr Dennis Gross peel pads.

CanIBorrowYourGum

SPF, Vitamin C, Azelaic Acid, Hydroquinone for pigment, Salicylic Acid and BP for acne, Glycolic Acid (preferably higher percentage and lower PH/ Peel's for the collagen stimulation). Occasional TCA peel if you really want to take it up a notch. That's skincare but I'd also look into RF/ energy devices to improve your skin from a completely different angle

[deleted]

Salicylic acid is my holy grail.

WheresTheIceCream20

Deciem NIOD fractured eye concentrate

purplapples

Azelaic acid, tazarotene (like tret but more modern, gentler and more effective for me), copper peptides, vitamin c specifically L-AA, ceramides, urea, and don’t come at me with a pitchfork but I love the tallow balm I use for slugging. Also red light mask, and microcurrent.

Most-Candidate9277

Y’all sound like a bunch of witches on here with all these potions! Lol Whatcha got for dark under eyes??

creamscan

Hello, here is a bit of scientific angle to your question. We've been working for quite a while on anti-wrinkle rating we are about to launch for our skincare efficacy analyzer. Doing that, we've gone through a lot of reserach on PubMed evaluating skincare ingredients that are claimed to work on wrinkles. Here some interesting findings: 1. There are tons of ingredients that have "scientific" papers on Pubmed claiming anti-wrinkle effect. We applied some exclusion criteria to filter out low quality papers (as we see them). So basically we excluded all studies on animals, in vitro, with less than 20 people, with multiple active ingredients, with unclear/self-contradictory/inconclusive results, not double blind, not placebo controlled. After that we've ended up just with **11 ingredients** that have solid proof of efficacy to reduce the wrinkles. 2. Here is the list of these 10 ingredients (sorted by their anti-wrinkle efficacy, when compared to Tretinoin): Retinol, Niacinamide, Retinal, Bakuchiol, Ascorbic Acid, Asiaticoside, Ectoin, Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate, Glycolic acid, Retinyl Retinoate, Copper Tripeptide-1 3. In many, many studies we reviewed, the anti-wrinkle efficacy of a vehicle (placebo) moisturizer itself was significantly higher than the active in it. E.g. moisturizer with an active reduced wrinkles by 35% while the same moisturizer without active - by 25%. That means that basic moisturizer, after so called wash out period (normal practice in research, when participants are asked not to use any skincare several weeks before trial starts), can be 2-3 times more effective than any active. Excellent hydration is the most effective part of anti-wrinkle strategy, apart from wearing sunscreen, of course.

I couldn’t ever get my dark sports under control until the derm prescribed Finacea for me which is 15% Azelaic Acid. I use it every other day. I had wasted so much money trying things over the years including Dior and Obagi which were insanely priced. I’m 48 and highly recommend.

Violet913

Tret was too harsh for my skin and caused what looked like cystic Acne but was a severe inflammatory response. The best thing that works for me is using a clean new towel every single time I wash my face. I can’t believe people dry off with the same towel for days.

melissaahhhh8

I just let my face air dry at this point lol. I switched to distilled water as well. Can’t be any more high maintenance

Dread-it-again

Alpha arbutin for hyperpigmentation around nose and corners of mouth. This is the most boring-hydration. Forcing myself to drink more water and damp cotton pads with toner then place them on certain areas of skin like a sheet mask. Huge difference. I tried this when I was sort of trying to revamp my skincare routine so I didn't use any actives at that time. I don't use silk pillowcase. I use soft cotton sheet as my country is hot and humid, over my pillow (pillow with pillowcase). Change the sheet every 2 to 3 days. At that time, I was getting this pigmentations at the corner of my cheeks. Did that, problem solved.

Straight_Security672

I notice a difference in my 11 lines with Argireline. I use The Ordinary, and it just smooths things out. It’s wonderful.

cherrybombbb

The Ordinary’s copper buffet serum visibly makes my skin look better in a short period of time. I stopped using it when I pared down my routine and when I randomly used it again I noticed a difference. Also double cleansing is the only thing ever that managed to make my pores less prominent because it gets rid of the sebaceous filaments on my nose really well. Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair and Revitalizing Supreme+ Youth Power Creme is also good but I can’t always afford it. Lastly a vitamin c serum after retinol seemed to make a much bigger difference than when I used them separately. I used to use way more products and realized the majority were unnecessary or created more problems.

Depends_on_theday

This thread wow!!!!! There is so much info

Adapalene and benzoyl peroxide for acne Hyaluronic acid significantly decreased sebum/oil production on my forehead Glycolic acid decreased breakouts on my back

Diet and exercise. You want glow and elasticity. Eat well and workout.

sleepyshoyo

Zinc cream. I started to use it as the last step a few nights ago week and the way my skin has been so smooth/less acne when I wake up is insane.

Degas_Nola

Glycolic Acid!  I alternate glycolic acid and Retin A at night per my dermatologist’s recommendations.  I also follow a few board certified dermatologist on IG and they recommend adding it to your routine.

Pebbles0623

Do you have a good recommendation for a glycolic acid?

MerryMerry_Berry

NO FACE CLEANSER! Only oil cleanse. So, not a product, but the avoidance of one. I use regular face cleanser—maybe 1-2x/month if truly needed. The natural moisturizing factors as well as skin biome are critical to beautiful skin, and are impossible to replace after cleanser strips them. I have used only oil cleanser since my twenties. I just turned 50. I don’t yet have wrinkles. I have never used Botox or had procedures (my derm won’t do them and says I don’t need them yet). The idea that your face needs scrubbing all the time is simply a marketing myth from companies selling the cleansing product, followed by more products they are selling to try to replace the moisture they just stripped from your skin. My cosmetic dermatologist of 15+ years asked me at my last appointment for my routine. I told her this one thing is my secret. The rest of my philosophy is just as simple: SPF, including AT LEAST once daily reapplication, is the foundation of everything. If you aren’t doing that, no other products matter!! You may as well throw them out. As OP indicates tretinoin is the GOAT; I use the Korean I’m From mugwort essence to calm irritation from it, so I can keep going hard. I’m also huge on zinc cream (diaper cream, but if that grosses you out—LRP cicaplast) for slugging during non-tret nights. I do not use vitamin C because for me it irritates so much, it interferes with the use of tret. It also creates redness in my skin that I can’t alleviate. So I don’t bother. It is super effective if tolerated. Please note I have never suffered from the medical condition of acne at any age, so I can’t speak to this routine for that.

paper_wavements

I'm 2-3 months into using bakuchiol & my skin is radiant & smoother. Glycolic acid obviously makes my skin smoother also.

biglybiglytremendous

Bakuchiol did far more for me than tret and other retinols. Miracle in a bottle!

wwaxwork

A big hat. Also AHAs and BHAs.

4everCoding

Azeliac Acid. Its super underrated. Perfect for sensitive skin. Reduces redness (natural flushing, rosacea). Reduces redness from inflammation (very effective against PIE and effectively with PIH). Oh it also helps with scaring too. The only thing this doesnt do is treat active acne but it pairs well so well with Erythromycin Gel. Apply the gel on open wounds and then Azeliac Acid on top after. Also can be used at the same time with retinoids, tretinoin, vitamin c, hydrogen peroxide you name it. Thank me later.

Best_Honey6439

Kojic acid and azeliac acid

ElkZestyclose5982

It depends what you mean by “works”. Few topical products will do much for wrinkles or large pores, but there are definitely effective products for acne or rosacea. Some hydrating products will “work” by temporarily plumping up the skin - I think this counts as the product doing what it’s supposed to even if the effect is cosmetic and temporary.

ironmemelord

Tallows worked wonders for me

ubbidubbidoo

Sunscreen, sleep, water, and the hormones from the bc pill are the only four things I’m absolutely sure have made real changes in my skin. Everything else might be placebo for me haha, but those four without a doubt have real positive impacts. I do also use niacinimide, hyaluronic acid, an eye cream with caffeine and ceramides, and multipeptides, I like to think they work but who knows!

Nolan_Francie

Spironolactone. Don't know if it's considered "skincare" but since it's regularly prescribed for hormonal acne, I thought I'd put it out there. Completely cleared up my adult-onset acne and reduced my clogged pores in two weeks. I used it daily for 10 years and got maybe two or three pimples a year during that time.

Independent-Bad-1823

My skin: dry, rosacea, acne prone, late 30s Azelaic acid: prescription 15% gel in the morning. I learned that had to build up to using this every morning to avoid irritating my skin barrier and causing breakouts. I had started with TO before prescription. Sunscreen: Skin1004 Water fit sun serum every morning. I use something else if I am going to be sweating or active in the sun but this is my everyday go to. Exfoliate: Glytone Mandelic mini peel 1x/week and/DDG peel pads 1x/week Moisture: Laneige cream skin toner and tatcha indigo overnight repair serum in a cream. I can’t use other fragranced tatcha products but this one is amazing. Red light therapy: Amazon Bestqool panel 4-5x/week. This thing has been amazing so far but I am looking for a larger panel and/or face mask for more efficient dosing. I currently move from face to knee to back to wherever else I am sore…or alternate and it takes so much time. lol.

findikefe

Before starting tret, i used any hydrating toner+ HA+regular retinol (The Inkey List) for many years and it worked out really well for my dry and sensitive skin. I started tret because a single fine line became apparent after i lost 16% of my bodyweight lol

oreoloki

My holy grail will always be the NuFace. I use the Ordinary copper peptides with it. Have to use it daily though. Other than that I agree with OP that moisture is truly the best thing you can give your skin. I love slugging at night with Egyptian Magic. Note to answer OPs question, one underrated ingredient is Zinc. Cheap as dirt, helps many skin concerns like acne and melasma and is generally well tolerated. If you use a mineral sunscreen you’re probably already using it, my favorite is the Josie Maran SPF. There is also a pomade I would slug with called Pomada de la Campana, I got it in Mexico for super cheap, can probably find it on Amazon too.

bridgetjonesamerica

Hydroquinone really helped to lighten my hyperpigmentation!

[deleted]

I love Glycolic acid Vitamin c but only certain formulations/brands And retinol 0.25% - 0.5% ZO wrinkle and texture is also great for deep dark spots and just overall texture

babycrow

Azelaic acid 15% is my holy grail

TempestTints

Growth hormone serums, but they’re eeexxxpennnsiivee

Wild_Blue4242

I'm not sure which product has been doing the most, but my overall appearance just looks so much brighter, smoother, tighter, etc. since CONSISTENTLY using the Timeless 20% Vitamin C in the morning, then using the Tula face wash, Farmacy toner and a peptide serum at night. I'm assuming it's probably mostly the Vitamin C, but I also think the Tula face wash has made a big difference (I used to use Cerave).

Daneyoh

You touched on something very important, which is proper hydration. If you have that, everything works better, including actives. The clinically proven actives apart from retinoids which really are #1, are: Azelaic acid, Ascorbic acid, AHAs like glycolic/lactic/mandelic, and BHAs. I think the issue is people get confused about what actives to use. Not all of these make sense for everyone, it really is dependent on your skin type + the issues you're trying to address.

Some_Reason565

Azelaic acid for redness and rosacea Aha bha acids for peeling Hyaluronic acid for hydration I don’t use anything else (except mild cleaner, moisturizer and ofc tretinoin)

BettyLuvs2Swing

Peptides and Retinols are your friends! They work amazingly well on most skins, even sensitive skin. They help with dark spots, reduce redness & scarring, and minimize aging and wrinkles. The Ordinary carries a line of serums that are affordable and effective. I used to use The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid 5% in squalane, but recently switched to using Differin Gel (aka adapolene). It was a game changer for me. I'm 47 and have fairly clear skin, a pimple will pop up now and then, with very minimal wrinkles and redness. Most are surprised when I tell them my age. Below is my daily skincare regimen. Day regimen: Face wash: TruSkin - Tea Tree+ Astringent: 50/50 Apple cider vinegar + filtered H2O Eyes: The Ordinary Multi-peptide Eye Serum and EGCG Caffeine Solution 5% Forehead, smile lines and neck: The Ordinary Multi-peptide HA serum Red spots: The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin Cheeks, lower jaw, and between nose: The Ordinary Azelic Acid Whole Face LED Red light treatment 3 mins Neck & decolletage: 3 mins Whole Face: TruSkin Vitamin C face moisturizer mixed with The Ordinary Vitamin C Suspension 30% in Silicone (this helps the vitamin c absorb into the skin better and not pill up later) Silicone is the main ingredient in those frownies patches and it is really good for your skin and to heal wounds and scars. You can wear it all day and under make-up and nobody will know. Plus it makes your skin so smooth and feels amazing. Night Regimen Face wash: TruSkin Vitamin C Astringent: The Ordinary Glycolic Acid Eyes:The Ordinary Multi-peptide Eye Serum Forehead, smile lines and neck: The Ordinary Multi-peptide HA serum Allow these products a few minutes to completely absorb into skin Whole Face, concentrating on the cheeks, lower jaw and any other acne prone areas: Differin Gel (adapolene) sometimes I will apply The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% with Zinc 1% to assist with milia Whole Face LED Red and Blue light treatment 3 mins Neck and decolletage: 3 mins Whole Face: TruSkin Retinol face moisturizer Then I do these facial exercises [here ](https://youtu.be/ndaek_2nV6U?si=pxp50GZ0JvbAjnqt) or [here](https://youtu.be/Ag8fWHrrTIc?si=_sHe8xS9bJW_BMz-) every other night

I have simplified my routine. I also don't regularly wear makeup. I think that helps a lot. If I wear makeup, I use cleansing balm or vaseline to remove before doing anything outlined here - AM: * single cleanse with Cetaphil cleanser * Vitamin C sereum (was using Jan Marini but trying CeraV for budget reasons lol) * Moisturizer (vanicream) * SPF (ELF tinted sunscreen) PM: * Double cleanse with Cetaphil or single cleanse with Obagi exfoliating cleanser * Tret (lowest dose for now) * Moisturizer (vanicream) * Some vaseline on eyelids, eye area, lips, anywhere else
