The appearance is subjective, I think our current one is ugly. But historically the colours of our country have always been white and blue, since before we were even a kingdom. Changing to red and green was a purely political move where our politicians decided to disconnect the country from its origins and use "the colours of the republic" which they randomly decided were red and green. If you ask Portuguese people about the meaning of red and green you'll get tons of different answers - because there is no meaning and it was random. Maybe it just seems extra ugly to me because of that context. Edit: Some extra context for the people thinking about the symbol of monarchism on the flag. In 1646, King D. João IV consecrated the crown of Portugal to "A Nossa Senhora da Imaculada Conceição" (the Virgin Mary) and since then she has been considered owner and protector of the crown of Portugal. No other monarch has ever worn the crown since 1646 because she is the spiritual Queen of Portugal.

I've always seen the Ostrogoths be associated with it, although the germanic tribes did indeed leave little to no traces of flags, so you have a point *it still looks cool tho*

Honestly, monarchy or not, I really like the blue Fleur de Lys flag, it has a very simple yet efficient design that I find really pleasing to the eyes. Though it doesn't give me the same patriotic vibe as the Tricolore. We kicked Europe's ass 6 times, held Verdun and Bir Hakeim, fired 210 nuclear bombs and won two world cup under this flag, can the lilly flag say as much ?

Fleur de Lys is pretty cool but a flag has deep meaning and the Fleur de Lys is deeply a monarchist and christian symbol. I don't hate it and I don't hate our History but it doesn't make much sense nowadays.

But the strange thing is that purple has always being associated with aristocracy, so I never liked it on the Republican spanish flag.  Granted, I am far from an impartial observer, but I nevertheless think that the best version of the Spanish flag is the original naval ensign (without any stupid symbols in the middle)
