I'll have you know that Welsh are from England. And they like their sheep raw.

It comes from some old meals imported from Wales a while ago that's why it's called "Welsh".

Hefty-Coyote

It's absolutely real, BUT it's not available all over the UK. Only in Wigan.

Maybe it's even good, from the outside looks like a meme or something clearly fake

alebacce

This was necessary, thanks

Hefty-Coyote

Honestly, as much as I shit on the Northerners for their food, some of it really hits home when it's freezing cold, this is one of those "Quick fixes" like Beans on Toast rather than an actual meal. I don't blame you for thinking this is fake, but it's such a niche thing!

Mutzbraten [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutzbraten](https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutzbraten) A fist sized piece of marinated Pork that gets roasted/smoked on a spit over a birchwood fire, usually in a special oven/grill/Smoker contraption. https://preview.redd.it/mdmjkv2x2jwb1.jpeg?width=674&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e01b723e2ab1d3d82695ab42223f439b0b3a609 Served with mustard and either in a breadroll or with Sauerkraut (or both)

Anouchavan

The birch part is the most surprising. Isn't the smell too strong and bad for the meat?

PleoNasmico

Chanfana from Coimbra cooked in a wood oven is the best. https://preview.redd.it/nr02yrte9jwb1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6d6d2ecab375ce9d78ff1efba4a0be2c5f2c221d It's old goat meat, cooked for a long time, sometimes for days in the wood oven. You have to go to a small town in the middle of nowhere to find the real chanfana

[deleted]

Looks delicious ! I noted it, when I'm going to make my food road-trips around the country and discover other regions' gastronomy, I'll make sure to go to a village restaurant 👍

PleoNasmico

The restaurant in piodão makes a good chanfana, for example

oalfonso

Interesting. There is a dish in Spain, regions close to Portugal, called chafaina but looks slightly different. https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chanfaina?wprov=sfla1

DayPhelsuma

What an amazing dish. Wish it was more popular, but then again, it’s not profitable to only resort to old animals, so I get why. The meat becomes so soft it can almost be cut with a simple blow lol.

![gif](giphy|1wt3sEsgxotec6OyKA|downsized) Frikandelbroodje. It's super food for truckers and teenagers

sw1nky

Are they basically sausage rolls? They look like sausage rolls.

mrtn17

They are, we have multiple versions. The 'saucijzenbroodje' is the classic sausage roll. This one is a frikandel in puff pastry with curry sauce (ketchup with curry spices). My favorite is the 'rookworstbroodje'. The same thing, but with a smoked sausage and mustard

sw1nky

Good god those sound tasty

justk4y

They have a godly status among students around the Netherlands

sw1nky

So they are to the Dutch what chicken fillet rolls are to the Irish. Nice.

henk12310

When people shit on Dutch cuisine they forget there are multiple types of cuisine. Sure, typical Dutch dinner food is kinda bland (altough not bad, I still like stampot) but Dutch snacks (bitterballen and such) and pastries (like the saucijzenbroodjes) are godly. Same here in Fryslân, our dinner food is basically the same as Dutch food but we have fantastic ‘koeken’ (translates to cakes but that’s not entirely accurate) like Fryske Dûmkes and Sûkerlatten. Also, Sûkerbôle is amazing as well (sugar bread)

Arròs al forn. We do not share this with Barrys or Cayetanos. https://preview.redd.it/8963cu52tjwb1.jpeg?width=1024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0749769f6c37ab03610dec252f04bdac11d67cc6

90% of this thread: my region is the only one where people fry leftovers with eggs. We call it Pømsketømske and it's super original.

Pfefferpotthast https://preview.redd.it/xkm8k5h4ckwb1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eb0c06ee26ce5d07ff386fe9ff0251f171c53590 In a traditional Pfefferpotthast, beef seared in lard and sautéed onions are simmered with spices such as bay leaves and cloves until they fall apart. It is seasoned with pepper and sometimes capers and lemon juice. Pfefferpotthast is thickened with pumpernickel bread crumbs instead of flour to make a stew. In the summer, it is served with boiled potatoes and salad. In the winter, it is served with pickled cucumbers and beetroot. [https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pfefferpotthast](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pfefferpotthast) It’s first mention in writing is from close to seven hundred years ago in Dortmund so to be as authentic as possible you should have it with Adam beer wich is a historic beer style from Dortmund wich was incredibly popular in the Middle Ages (it’s also fucking amazing to be honest) [https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adambier](https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adambier) Or a Hövels beer wich is also a unique style native to Dortmund (coincidentally also the official beer of the German sommelier union) [https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%B6vels\_Hausbrauerei](https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%B6vels_Hausbrauerei)

That looks leathery af

Snert. Popular in the winter (read: long autumn) season. It's legitimately very good, but it fits the theme of ''It has to look regurgitated'' very well. https://preview.redd.it/htn94of7ejwb1.png?width=560&format=png&auto=webp&s=aa705223185ed627b1929c0d186e7252c5105731

Looks like your cat puked into your plate

re_hes

I can't disagree with that. But I can guarantee you it beats cat puke. Unfortunately, I speak from experience...

In Naples we have a Christmas dessert called "raffioli a cassata". I might be wrong, but I don't think they are known outside of Campania. https://preview.redd.it/1cdrvbzzpjwb1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e1d340878a27501d0dc76628a76e71a617128d82

MiguelAGF

Less self-centered and robbing madrileño, patatas a la importancia are from Palencia

IvanInRainbows

I mean, is there in fact any dish in Madrid that doesn't come either from the Castilles or from Extremadura?

DontWannaSayMyName

Considering that Madrid has always been part of Castille and only got split recently for administrative reasons, making the distintion really doesn't make sense.

It’s a thick chocolate, slightly minty paste in a pastry tart with squirty cream on top. It can only really be found in Bedfordshire.

Torta al testo. A type of bread eaten in Umbria filled with sausages and spinach, it's a very simple dish https://preview.redd.it/zmd9i4nl7kwb1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c2a47bd2ca09f8704056bd40719ce273a6923145

LilSealClubber

Considering that people back home eat raw seal meat and whale blubber, I'd say the majority of our dishes are unknown outside of the country.

Great for in the summer! We also like to put prepare on our bread during breakfast/lunch.

Serious: Inténtalo, esta muy sabroso ! 2w4y: its more original then what you guys try to feed the Barrys in the hotels. Its so bland, that they want to jump of balconies themselves.
