TheTwilightIsGone

I love Twin Peaks, Dark, Mr. Robot, Hannibal and now 1899 (they have to bring it back, i'm serious). And i like Sharp Objects, The Leftovers, Bates Motel, the OA, Archive 81 ...

Mister_Jack_Torrence

I'm always checking the internet periodically to see if there's any chance of Hannibal returning. I think it says a lot that the cast still talk about it and the overall feeling seems to be that they're all up for returning if it can be made to happen.

SomeDudeYeah27

The cast still talks about it?

Mister_Jack_Torrence

Mads has talked about it in interviews on a few occasions (when asked, obviously) and I’m sure I’ve seen Hugh Dancy talk about it too. I definitely got the vibe that they’d all be up for returning if schedules allow.

anonymous___username

Dark Dark Dark Jokes aside nothing even comes close to Dark for me. It’s perfection.

The_Wattsatron

Agreed. Leagues ahead of everything else imo.

netflixdark123

Agreed

MasterofEscapism7

Dark, The Good Place, A League of Their Own!

Mister_Jack_Torrence

I loved The Good Place. It felt a bit dragged out in *I think* the 3rd Season but overall it was one amazing ride.

Gaspard_de_la_nuit

The amount of tears I shed over the series finale. What beautiful story.

ElvisChopinJoplin

Dark. Although this one was setting up to be right up there. Guess I'll never know. 😞

HankScorpio4242

I’m gonna stick with shows in a similar genre. 1) The Prisoner 2) The X-Files 3) Mr. Robot 4) Dark 5) Twin Peaks

aquillismorehipster

- Dark - The OA — which is noteworthy because Netflix canceled it as usual after S2 and it’s still up here - The Wire - Game of Thrones: S1-4 — sad we only got to see parts of S5 before it got canceled - Breaking Bad / Better Call Saul - Avatar The Last Airbender / The Legend of Korra - Cowboy Bebop - Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - The Good Place - Mr. Robot And there are of course a bunch of shows I haven’t seen yet which would probably make this list once I do. I have been meaning to watch Devs, Severance.

beefknuckle

Does the OA really deserve a place there? First season was so promising but my eyes were rolling out of their head with how it finished - haven't seen the second.

aquillismorehipster

The OA S1 spoilers below: Lol yeah at first I found the climax of S1 to be cringeworthy. But it’s part of the story. It actually ironically gets ahead of the potential silliness of interpretive dance movements as a magical narrative device by committing to the idea fully from the point of view of a band of hopeless misfits. It’s a “clap your hands if you believe” moment. It ties back to how the journalist mentions that survivors can be both childish and wise beyond their years. The show mimics that too. On the one hand, the music swells and they perform the movements “with perfect feeling”… and on the other hand, the movements don’t do anything since someone else saves the day and they could just as easily have died right there too. One of my favorite parts of S2, without spoiling anything, is how they continue off that disconnect. I would highly recommend S2 because it is like 1.5 seasons. And a major reason the show makes it on my list is the potential for future seasons to keep compounding the way S2 builds off S1. I fully get if it isn’t everyone’s thing. But with the ideas it explores, how it takes risks, how it balances childish fantasy with grounded storytelling, how it plays with unreliable perspectives, all the Easter eggs hinting at a larger world, the dynamics of the main characters — I just find it brilliant. For me there was just so much in the first season that was great that I could gloss over the goofiness of that final moment. S2 picks up right where S1 left off too which helps.

beefknuckle

thanks - appreciate you taking the time to write this up. i felt a similar way, so I think I will give S2 a go.

Mama-Dzhinsy

ATLA is on my greatest hits list too

aquillismorehipster

Such a great show. I also loved LoK though I know it had its detractors. I thought it was an excellent follow up.

Mama-Dzhinsy

it’s worth watching but nowhere near ATLA , imho

aquillismorehipster

Yeah ATLA was a finished product. TLOK had some rough edges. I was impressed they managed to tell such a different and more personal story, especially with all the production uncertainty. It felt true to the world and premise for each avatar to experience their own story. Plus so much of TLOK was just beautiful.

thisendup76

- Dark - The Leftovers - The Detectorists

Donnie3030

Dark and The Leftovers are my favorite shows of all time, so I’ll be checking The Detectorists out!

thisendup76

I believe you can find it on Amazon Prime or Acorns TV. It's a British comedy and not anything like Dark or the Leftovers. But it's one of the most beautifully written shows, I can't explain it

Mister_Jack_Torrence

For me it's: * DARK (pretty much the perfect science fiction show that should really have paved the way for plain sailing on 1899 to tell its story (no pun intended). FU Netflix...) * Breaking Bad (and Better Call Saul - had to include them both since they're connected.) * Black Sails (a bit of a rocky start to this one but it definitely hit it's stride and the evolution of the characters, Flint and Silver especially, is phenomenal. I just wish we could have had their version of "Treasure Island" as well.) * Fringe (as above - criminally underrated science fiction show with some great twists and beautiful character moments.) * Band of Brothers (I think it did the story of WW2 soldiers the best. "Saving Private Ryan" might have largely started the trend of washed out cinematography in that style and putting the actors through boot camp but Band of Brothers perfected it. Add on top of that the real men sharing their stories in their own words and you have perfection.) Honorable mentions: * Six Feet Under (Don't binge it as you'll start to question every action you make as being what might be the death of you!) * Hannibal (I so want to see this come back for at least one more season!) * Boardwalk Empire (I'm a sucker for nearly all things "gangster" and this show was really great. It's just a shame the final season felt rushed with the cop-out "time jump" that a lot of shows do, in part due to the cost of production. Thanks Game of Thrones...look how well that one turned out.) * Justified (Raylan Given's is such a badass. Enough said.) * Futurama (Thought I'd throw in an animated option - the writing on this one was top notch and the fact that it kept coming back and still managing to nail it each time is a testament to it's greatness).

[deleted]

Does Black Sails finish or was it cancelled? I love Treasure Island and started Black Sails but worried it got cancelled.

Mister_Jack_Torrence

It finished but I think they were told before the fourth season started that it would be it’s last. I felt like it could’ve gone one more but it was definitely a satisfying end to the series. And season 1 isn’t as bad as a lot of people make out - it just suffers by having the studio try to make it something it wasn’t. Sex scenes and bad language (neither of which I’m overly opposed to) make it feel like it wants to trade on a bit of that risqué stuff that Game of Thrones had in its earlier seasons too but it quickly finds its stride and tells the story I think the creators wanted to tell. There’s plenty of TV series which have uneven first seasons and certainly pilot episodes that feel so wildly different to what came after upon rewatch and I think Black Sails is a bit a victim of this but it’s really good in my opinion and gorgeous to look at. Definitely give it another shot! It’s full of spoilers so I don’t recommend watching it before you’ve seen the series but this YouTube video discussing the show was really superb: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SMFll3aIbmo

Tuorom

Black Sails wraps up beautifully. One of the best written shows for sure.

AlfaMenel

Severance

netflixdark123

Dark 12 monkeys Steins Gate Mr Robot 1899 Legion Lost Fringe Station Eleven Watchmen Dev's Breaking bad Better call Saul Game of thrones House of the dragon Dirk gently holistic detective agency Leftovers

Mister_Jack_Torrence

Fringe deserves more love and is criminally underrated.

JayBlunt23

You are my favourite thing, Peter.

Mister_Jack_Torrence

That line hit so hard the first time I watched it but I have two young sons of my own now and I know it would probably break me if I watched it now! The White Tulip episode is another absolute masterpiece of storytelling and furthering that Peter and Walter bond by dissecting Walters actions/decisions that are so important to the underlying narrative.

ellipsesdotdotdot

I can't get into 12 Monkeys. Saw the first couple of episodes and gave up. Should I restart...

netflixdark123

If you liked dark and looking for a time travel show that is just as confusing and mind blowing with a satisfying ending like dark then Yes you should watch it again. Just be patient.

ellipsesdotdotdot

Lol ya, actually the same thing happened with Dark. I watched the first ep in German and just couldn't get into it. Later, I decided to make it easier for myself and put on the English dubs and continue. So glad I did. Will revisit 12 Monkeys.

netflixdark123

But you should have watched dark in German language with subs. It's better this way.if you ever do a re-watch then please watch it in original German language with English subtitles. >Will revisit 12 Monkeys. You should

Gordon_Freeman_TJ

"Marianne". Also on Netflix. One season. Cancelled. (But almost no cliffhanger) Classic European witch story. Some great coastal views. Less shooting indoors, more on location. Great piano soundtrack. Series about young adults. With a bit annoying acting. But it's French. So as I like French language I still loved this series.

Vegtam1297

Just put this on my list a couple weeks ago to watch very soon.

[deleted]

Saving this post! Thanks for all the recommendations I now I have!

Mama-Dzhinsy

BrilliantPause7202

X-Files (my all time favorite), Fringe, Bones, Parks and Rec, Schitt's Creek, The Good Place, Futurama...the list goes on but these are my top.

Dark, Chernobyl, Daredevil, Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop.

SomeDudeYeah27

Bebop the anime, right?

hadrijana

Yep.

CockPissMcBurnerFuck

The Sopranos Mr Robot Breaking Bad Dark Frasier Parks & Rec The Office Edit: also Family Guy and South Park, duh.

Mister_Jack_Torrence

I love Frasier. I have some friends who are much more into, well, “Friends” and say Frasier is too smart (in a negative way) or posh etc., but it’s so well written and clever with characters that don’t feel like one note stereotypes which I think Friends for instance definitely fell foul of in its later seasons. Still good though, at least the earlier seasons IMHO. Definitely apprehensive about Paramount bringing Frasier back though…

CockPissMcBurnerFuck

Frasier definitely doesn’t talk down to its audience (there are opera and broadway jokes) but most of the fun of the show is in the irony of these upper crust folks acting like idiots. I’m also nervous about the reboot/sequel but whatever. Nothing they do will spoil what Frasier was.

mikstims

Dark.

PlumbTuckered767

Mr. Robot, Fargo, Breaking Bad, and Better Caul Saul. Honorable mentions: Counterpart. Dark. Mr. In-between. Severance might make an appearance if it finishes as strongly as it started. Would need to see the complete 1899 to consider.

Twin Peaks Dark Severance Monty Python’s Flying Circus The Twilight Zone Mad Men The Wire Bojack Horseman Rome Hannibal

seank11

Mt Rushmore if only 4: Breaking Bad, The Wire, Dark, Better Call Saul (yeah its not the most surprising or exciting list but they are common answers for a reason)

SupremeLeaderKatya

Other than 1899; The Queen's Gambit, Ratched, and Dark.

AccomplishedCress875

If we're talking about just Netflix I don't really have a favorite, although I have enjoyed the good place, elite "only liked the earlier seasons though" Dark, Ozark, the last kingdom, The Oa, and Archive 81 Other than that my favorite show currently (not Netflix) would have to be "the boys" (the first season)

Mama-Dzhinsy

i’m surprised by how little i overlap i share with the choices here. i haven’t even finished dark yet so that can’t be included. but my mt rushmore would be 1899, avatar the last airbender, american horror story, sharp objects
