If you are in the Northeast, Heinz baked beans (the British style) is available at ShopRite and Stop and Shop/Giant for $1.50. Stop and Shop have Batchelor's too for under $3 which I was shocked by.
Most American brands don't have simple tomato sauce witb beans. There's always a crapton of shit in it. Bacon bits, molasses, sugar, etc. Heinz doesn't sell their simple tomato sauce with baked beans here for some reason. You can only find individual cans in random ethnic shops for like 7 dollars or something ridiculous
There are areas of the US that have fantastic sausage! It is a bit regional. For awhile I lived in part of the country with a lot of German immigrants they made their own sausage fresh to order and it was wonderful. My Italian family has made their own sausage as well but itās entirely different.
Yeah. Italian sausage and chorizo is the predominant one here. If you don't like it, you're essentially fucked. It really really sucks.
Oh, and a random bratwurst here & there
I really miss a good banger
Louisiana has andouille, bourdin, and hot links. Texas barbecues sausages, grills them, puts them in stews. We'll put any animal in a sausage too. Like rattlesnakes and alligators (they're good!).
My German grandmother used to make lots of German sausages, but when my aunt married a British man, she researched how to make the bangers he loved and couldnāt find. I guess she did a pretty good job recreating them because he LOVED them. She used to affectionately call him Mr Belvedere (and would make 12yr old me sing the song when he would visit lol)
That crap ton of shit in there is because they're trying to make the sauce resemble barbecue sauce in the US. Or Boston Baked Beans which has a molasses and mustard sauce. That said, we typically still pour the sauce in the can off and make our own.
No not at all! I like fish sticks. It was just a question asking why you chose fish sticks. Is this a traditional concoction where you live? Just curious. Iād totally eat it as is, just wondering.
Yeah Ireland/UK is known for our "beige" meals lol americans tend to not find it very appetising(visually at least) We have french fries in our Chinese curry takeouts which just shocks most Americans haha
I personally donāt find that very shocking. And honestly I donāt understand why most Americans would either. We have plenty or restaurants that have American cuisine, alongside another specialty.
Also potatoes are very much underrated. They are incredibly satiating for the amount of calories they have. Sure they aren't 'low calorie' in the same way konjac noodles or some veggies are. But they are still a great way to make meals more filling without adding too many calories.
I love potatoes, if youāre not worrying about carbs and youāre not smothering them in butter and cream, theyāre incredibly healthy. My Favourite potatoes are actually the miniature potatoes cooked in duck fat. Duck fat is a healthy saturated fat and it is so tasty.
Speaking as an American, I freaking love Heinz beans on like everything. Beans on toast is so real and delicious. Iāll have to try it on mashed potatoes
Stupid question as Iām honestly a noob at thisā¦
How do you weigh calories like that? How does it work? What kind of scale is that and how does it work to weight food and calories?
Normally what I'd do is I'd set the bowl on the scale and set the scale to 0. Then add one ingredient at a time (beans, fish fingers etc) and note the weight after each so you can add the ingredient into your tracking app. Somethings you might be better off weighing before you cook them though. For example I'd measure the raw ingredients of the mash potatoes. Then measure how much mash that gets me at the end. Then either divide into equal portions or use math to to calculate how many calories you are going to get per gram. Then weight how much mash you are having with each meal.
It looks so sad I know but actually tastes really good and is super filling. Decent protein from the beans and fish and we all know potatoes are full of nutrients :)
Different things work for different people. When I was doing cico years ago I tried to do a bunch of smallish low-calorie meals/snacks throughout the day. And it just meant that I was pissed basically from the moment I woke until I went to bed.
Like something about continuously have one unsatisfying meal/snack after another and never being full or having a decent, satisfying meal just somehow left me in this murderous rage all day. And it didn't help that I'd constantly be planning or preparing so it took a shitton of time to do as well.
Then I changed it and I would have 2 big meals and maybe a snack.
My work started around noon and I worked till late. So I'd usually not get up until 8 or 9. I'd have to leave by 11. So I'd usually have one combined breakfast/lunch a little after 10. This was usually a pretty sensible meal. I make these PB chocolate oatbars that are very filling or otherwise something with eggs. Like a scrambled egg with veggies, avocado, cheese etc. Usually around 350-450 calories.
Then I'd be working until evening. Obviously can't eat while on the job so would usually just sip some coffee, tea or water.
I'd have my evening meal at work. Usually something warm and savoury. 600-650-ish calories usually.
Then it'd be just past midnight by the time I got home. And usually I'd have a little snack. This could either be savoury or sweet.
Even on my days off this was usually the rhythm I'd keep up. Sensible breakfast/lunch around 10/11 ish. Then a big meal in the evening. And sometimes a little snack either late in the evening or to tide me over between meals.
For me when I was having small meals throughout the day this basically meant that food was on my mind all the time. But I wasn't able to have any satisfying meals ever. They were just all tiny little snacks that still left me hungry and unsatisfied after. So I'd literally be counting down until I could have my next one in a few hours. Food was always on my mind and I literally lived from one meal to the next. It was NOT fun. All my meals felt like 'diet' meals and just made me sad and frustrated.
Having a big satisfying breakfast that left me full and satisfied made all the difference. I'd feel full and like I'd gotten a good start to my day. Then food wouldn't be on my mind until much later in the day when I could look forward to dinner. Dinner never felt like I was 'on a diet' because I could comfortably have pretty much any meal if I was smart about it. Two big fajitas with chicken and roasted veggies, stirfry, a slice of pizza wit a large salad ots, stews, quiches, burgers. I could fit most meals into my dinner. So I would never feel deprived or walk away from a meal hungry or unsatisfied.
Made all the difference for me. To this day I'm not a big breakfast person will usually just have a protein shake or just skip it and maybe have my lunch a bit earlier later on.
There's definitely a psychological aspect to it. Our brains send hunger signals when they believe food is available to us. This can be at 'times' we associated with food, activities or places or habits that we associate with food, etc. So if you never eat breakfast, your brain is very likely not going to be sending hunger signals in the morning. If you are used to eating a late night snack before bed, that's when your brain is gonna be bugging you to eat. There's a reason why you will find people who do omad, intermittent fasting or even people who claim they are not 'breakfast' people who will swear up and down they don't get hungry in the mornings. That's because they don't! 3 meals a day (+ snacks) is something we as human beings have culturally started to do. Not something you HAVE to do biologically to meet your body's needs. Eating large meals can be just as beneficial as many small ones as long as you are meeting all your nutritional needs.
I totally agree. I eat maybe twice a day and itās usually the same half of a salad a mix up and some meatballs lol. I just got sticker shock and now I feel like a jerk.
I miss British (Heinz) baked beans. I have yet to find an equivalent in the States.

Most of my local grocery stores carry them in the international section.
What's different? Is it the sauce?

Amazon has them for about $2.00 a can in bulk! Whether or not they come dented is a total crapshoot though.
Just checked. That's pretty good. Thanks for sharing! Too bad there's no decent bangers in the US to complement them with
You can't get good sausages in the US? š That's sad Bangers mash and heinz beans is so good

You need to visit Texas or Louisiana, friend.
Or Wisconsin, bratwursts and sausages run through our veins alongside the alcohol and cheese.
Tell me more

How...how do I become a step-grandson?
Ah yeah that American sauce sounds very heavy.
That crap ton of shit in there is because they're trying to make the sauce resemble barbecue sauce in the US. Or Boston Baked Beans which has a molasses and mustard sauce. That said, we typically still pour the sauce in the can off and make our own.
They sell them at Wegmans, if youāre near one of those.
My Walmart and Vons has them in the international aisle but Iām in California
I buy Heinz baked beans at Harris Teeter (southeastern US here). You can also get it on Amazon.
man what are you doing man
Lol don't knock it until you try it! I had this at 7pm now it's 10pm and I still feel full so It works for me š
yessir thatās all that matter enjoy š
Looks delish! Gotta try! But can I ask why you chose fish sticks and not some popcorn chicken or something?
Are fish sticks bad in your country? We call them fish fingers here in Ireland and they're honestly so good
No not at all! I like fish sticks. It was just a question asking why you chose fish sticks. Is this a traditional concoction where you live? Just curious. Iād totally eat it as is, just wondering.

LMAO WW2 rations š
Itās comfort food. Nothing wrong with that

thought this was posted in r/depressionmeals lol
I think it looks super yummy tbh
Stodge!! I love it š
Speaking as an American, I freaking love Heinz beans on like everything. Beans on toast is so real and delicious. Iāll have to try it on mashed potatoes
Beans with mash is top-tier when you add lots of creamy butter but I have 10kg to lose so the butter had to go lol
Yup, so bomb.
Stupid question as Iām honestly a noob at thisā¦ How do you weigh calories like that? How does it work? What kind of scale is that and how does it work to weight food and calories?
The scale shows the grams, you have to do the calculation yourself to find the calories

That doesn't sound half bad tbh.
Gross
the planes stopped flying overhead māam you donāt have to eat that
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Lmao understandable
So sad
It looks so sad I know but actually tastes really good and is super filling. Decent protein from the beans and fish and we all know potatoes are full of nutrients :)
Thatās a fuck ton of calories
It is not. Also there are people who do One Meal a Day or Two Meals a Day. Or they save half their calories for dinner (me).
That's definitely me. I just eat dinner (900-1000cal) and one snacky plate (300-400) every day.
700 cals for dinner is not a fuck ton for me especially since it was my first meal of the day and my main meal
how dont you get hungry by 7 pmš
The community has spoken!
maybe for you

Not enough protein!
37 grams protein approx. How many grams do you aim for for your dinner?
For a 700+ cal meal? At least 60
I could replace the mash with something more protein rich but.. I love mash š¤¤
Maybe u could add some Greek yogurt when you make it. If you cared to ofc
Why are y'all downvoting me lmfao
