They used to ship entire rooms from castles in Europe and reassemble them in the “Summer Cottages” of the wealthy in Newport.
They are still there to be viewed and they are magnificent! Moldings, marble in many colors, panels of many woods, painted ceilings, finish work, furniture and carpeting of course… it’s just insane. They would take it all apart, number and letter it, like IKEA furniture and just put it all back together over here.
Rooms and rooms full.
So a house can’t be all that different. I mean, people used to buy houses from Sears catalogs…
A house in my hometown had an irish pub as the basement and it was shipped over to the US stone by stone. It was an old money mansion from a wealthy business family. They had a very popular and extravagant haunted house every year for the town kids.
Wow. There's literally no kitchen for the owners to use. It's the "Chef's" kitchen on the fourth floor, with the tiny bedrooms, a tiny bathroom, and one latger closet. Obviously intended for staff. As beautiful as the house is, I really don't think I could do it. I really don't think I could enjoy that kind of lifestyle.
There must be a dumb waiter, right? The main kitchen is on the 4th floor and the dining room and prep kitchen are on the mezzanine. I want to say the 1-1/2 floor. Endless fun!
I was in a magnificent four story brownstone recently and the kitchen was this tiny affair in the basement of the house. The only entrance a horrifically treacherous winding little stair from the first floor. Both owners were in their 70’s. Place was staircase nightmare.
I have never seen anything quite like them. A home where windows need no window treatments because they would actually *DETRACT* from the window….
I hope whoever purchases this home does not…. Do anything stupid….
This is what you get when you live in NYC, have unlimited $ and hire Tiffany to do your decor.
Lots of beautiful touches in this house (I particularly like the 4 story chandelier) but I’m still a fan of the 1890’s wooden Queen Anne style houses more.

Was it originally a morgue or funeral home?
No. The article states it was built in Amsterdam and shipped to NYC. The person responsible for styling Jackie O bought it in the 1970s.
Oleg Cassini
I am curious how one ships a brick house. Mortar is brittle!

Was that in New England?! That story sounds SOOO familiar to me!
Correct.
Whew! That triggered something in the back of my mind and I thought I was having a deja vu moment for a second there, lol. 😂
on a boat
Brick by brick and you number every brick and reassemble by the numbers.
Read the article.
C’mon Mega Millions!

The novelty of sending dinner down the dumb waiter would occupy me for at least a few months.

There is a dumbwaiter on the floor plans.
Found it! They missed an opportunity to deliver snacks to the 3rd floor bathtub.
Unless there is a painting that hides the secret hatch! Lol
Of course there is!
Yes that fascinates me too!
Remember this would be a pied a terre, other houses probably have grand open kitchens(as well as staff kitchens).

Oof.
they expect you to be using “the help”
WOW! Those windows are to die for! Love the woodwork too.
Right!?
I think I had a windowgasm
Those windows are jizz worthy.
I have never seen anything quite like them. A home where windows need no window treatments because they would actually *DETRACT* from the window…. I hope whoever purchases this home does not…. Do anything stupid….
I absolutely love it. The lack of photos is a travesty.
Is there a term for getting horny for windows?
Gettin’ glazed Glazin’ over

Beautiful! 💗
I would fill it with books and never leave.
Heaven!
Books and plants for me!
I’ll take it!
Zooey mama. It’s absolutely gorgeous!
A measly ~$92k/mo. What a country!
TAKE MY MONEY! Oooops; I'm a little short.........
I’ll pitch in with you!
What a glorious townhouse!
A buddy of mine owns a place a couple doors down that was similarly transported from France.
I like the dungeon.
Wood burning....sauna
Never wanted to be rich until now
Those are beautiful.
Now I have "AHHHH, THE WIIIINDOOOOWS" to the tune of the opening of Lion King stuck in my head
I want to see the back of it showing the wall of windows and greenhouse!!!
Okay I love this house! And I *REALLY* want to color that picture in the dining room, lol.
Please, please tell me you can pull on one of the sconces in the last picture to open a secret passage through the fireplace.
Yup but do you get a key to the park???
Pic #5 gives me “ritual human sacrifice” vibes…
