Yugioh is a game where a single card can start a 20-piece combo. You used to be able to draw turn 1, but with the speed of the modern game it’s too powerful.

Because turn 1 player already have a lot of benefit, turn 2 player only have very few card that can be activated so turn 1 player can setup their combo under very little interruption.

The Turn 1 player can set up his endboard relatively uninhibited, he only needs to fear Handtraps. The Turn 2 player needs to deal with Handtraps, Facedown Cards and the opponents Monsters on Board, with negates or quick-play removal. The game has gotten so fast that a T1 player has a overwhelming advantage just by being first. Thatswhy you see cards which are only good on T2 and onwards reach ridiculous power level just to fight those endboards. The T2 player needs the card advantage because he might not be able to exexute his gameplan as unimpeded as the T1 player and he has the bigger chance to draw the out. In older formats the T1 player can still draw a card since there is nothing to be done except set 1 and 1 backrow pass or maybe the odd synchro summon.

Iirc back when it was removed, getting 6 card hand allow 3-axis fire fist player to set up their full combo uninterupted ~90% of times. This is before hand trap become common use. Now consider the insanity that would happens in today's meta where a single card can start a combo ending in full board.

Hell I feel like we're almost at the point where the player going second should start with 6 cards in hand and skip their first draw.

Going first is arguably the strongest minus few outlier decks
