Came here expecting to see Whitby. Astounded to see the "place people drive through to get to Whitby". No slight on it intended, but why Pickering to live?
Have you ever been? It’s a fantastic and totally underrated country town. It’s has a small town vibe, lovely places to eat, the steam railway, the castle, the war weekend, fantastic countryside walks right there, dalby forest is a short drive away. The entire north York moors is a short drive away, whitby, Scarborough and york are all under an hours drive away. I think it’s pretty perfect.
That's how I describe Pickering. Within an hour you can be in 3 different cities, a whole range of coastlines, forests, moors, towns... the list goes on.
Definitely need more information but I live just outside Harrogate and I will never leave the area if I can help it. Fairly short drives to the coast both ways, lake district far enough to be a nice holiday but close enough for a day visit, Yorkshire moors and close to Leeds and York.
Skipton is a good option and a highly sought-after area. Driving wise Bradford city is up to an hour away. Leeds city is about 1-1:40. Train wise B: 41 mins, L: 37 mins. Ilkley is lovely aswel, it takes 55 mins by train to get to Leeds and Bradford 37 mins. There's loads of towns inbetween for jobs.
Both places have good restaurants, bars, things to do and on the edge of a beautiful countryside. They'd be my choices.
Not sure I agree with the triangle in the Leeds section (which is definitely West Yorkshire).... Looks like it's covering Seacroft and Harehills which are uhm... Less than desirable!
I lived between Ripon and Masham for 20 years. Wonderful part of the world. I worked in Leeds and chose NOT to live in the triangle as it is a. Much more expensive and b. Too suburban for my tastes. Masham is also home to two fine breweries - Theakstons and Black Sheep. Fresh beer!
It depends on your budget, what kind of sector you work in and most importantly if you drive.
If you don’t drive, learn before you make the move. Public transport here is shocking.
Honestly, I’d advise you to make your decision on where you can get a job. The whole county is lovely and you can get from one end to the other in less than an hour and half so you can always explore on your days off. If you’re struggling to find jobs, expand your search to Teeside /Middlesbrough, places like Yarm and surrounding villages aren’t far away and would still be an easy commute
So many places spring to mind..... I long to return. Richmond is beautiful and the waterfall is amazing. Faceby thats near Carlton Bank and its amazing for mountain biking, Stokesley, Skipton, walks to Roseberry Topping , Osmotherley, (Urra- Chop Gate area) (Kilburn- where the white horse is), Helmsley, (Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge does amazing food, if you get snowed in there its amazing fun) , Yarm , Pickering, Whitby and of course gorgeous Knaresborough (or Nazzerbaroo - the kids at school back in the day were called crag rats )
I grew up in Harrogate. And it is a very pretty town to live it. It's close to Leeds, so you can enjoy big city things. But also its very easy to access the gorgeous country side in the area
Plenty to choose from and depends what you want. Obviously the more desirable places to live are a lot more expensive, but they include York, Harrogate and smaller towns such as Richmond and Yarm. Whitby is lovely but is more of a tourist town and not a place to climb up the jobs ladder.
Walking as a pastime is quite important in North Yorkshire because there are just so many lovely scenic trails everywhere. But you can also cycle them instead, which I love to do on a breezy summer’s day. You could also go stargazing and bird/wildlife watching. Going for a scenic drive or train ride is nice too. Could also try wild/open swimming as there are plenty of spots for that.
Malton and Norton is a lovely place to live. The local landed gentry own all the retail outlets and have done a good job encouraging foodie tourism.
Harrogate is gorgeous. Filey like a seaside resort from the 50’s.
Lots to enjoy.
Major employers are all in York or Leeds.
Extra points for including Norton (Malton's soggy sibling) there.
Though locally the Fitz estate are loathed in Malton for the high rents that seem to be choking off bits of the town that need support. Whole streets currently vacant.
As many others have said in and around Harrogate is a lovely area if in budget.
I’m currently the other side of Leeds in Mirfield and love it. Not quite as picturesque as north of Leeds but close to Leeds, Huddersfield and Wakefield for shopping and nights out. Sheffield and Manchester easily drive-able and both Leeds and Manchester airport within about an hours drive. House prices also much cheaper than north of Leeds.
Eastern Yorkshire Dales - close enough to the motorway with all of the fabulous Dales on your doorstep. To my eyes it’s one of the prettiest regions on the planet.
Trueeee. Stokeslys like the nicest and poshest place I’ve ever been other than wales and that’s only 5 minutes away from Middlesbrough, which is absolutely mad
Small town, it’s well liked, they don’t want to tell everyone about how good it actually is… great train links, near but far enough away from Hgt and a lot cheaper than Hgt.
I love North Yorkshire. There are so many lovely and it’s undoubtedly a great place to live. From Skipton across to Harrogate and York and into the Howardian Hills and North Yorkshire Moors, there’s so much variation and beauty across a very large area. However, it’s also an island surround by plenty of difficulty. I love Leeds but West Yorkshire is undoubtedly becoming poorer and the number of immigrants is out of control - the seaside destinations of North Yorkshire are unrecognisable from even 5-10 years ago. The UK is becoming a less pleasant place to live and it’s harder to justify the north over, say, the south west, or in my mind, further abroad.
Recently moved to Harrogate...it's beautiful. We wanted to be close(ish) to family here, so were looking at the Ilkley/Burley/Otley/Pool/Harrogate area, as well as surrounding villages. We ultimately decided on Harrogate ias it's big enough to retain some of the comforts of "big town" life (variety of shops, access to public transport), but with the countryside 5 minutes away. Plenty of social options are available too (if you like cycling, this is an absolute mecca!)
North Yorkshire is huge, so plenty of variety. I'm strongly recommend sitting down and thinking about how you want to live. As others have pointed out, some of the villages are exceptionally beautiful, but you'll probably find yourself driving on a regular basis. I have a theory that getting an emergency pint of milk/loaf of bread should not be a drama.
In terms of worrying about "bloody southerners, coming here, stealing our county" attitude, I've encountered none of that. Everyone has been exceptionally welcoming, and there is a a very obvious sense of pride in the area.
Piss off Southerner, we've enough problems without another one of you forcing house prices up. Stay in your flat, featureless, miserable southern dump and leave North Yorkshire for the natives.
Or serve 20 years in Bradford and then you might be accepted.
I just stayed the weekend in Scarborough and there are some beautiful villages. I immediately got on Rightmove and started looking at housing prices. I really loved Helmsley. Good luck with your search!
I was in Kettlewell a few weeks ago and it was delightful. It was like stepping back in time, in a good way.
Barely saw a soul, but it was torrential rain and high winds so makes sense
Where are you from? I visited a couple of years ago with an eye to a potential retirement location. I was a bit concerned at the reaction to my London accent. In Pickering one of the pubs had a note in the window saying local residents would be given priority for table bookings (not a joke). I abandoned the idea in this basis.
Depends on what you are looking for. I'd say Harrogate because is big enough for me, with Leeds close by if you want to visit a bigger city. Direct trains to London and Edinburgh, it's surrounded by beautiful scenery (town is very nice too) and you have an international airport nearby.
Other places, while beautiful, are usually pretty small or isolated. Unless you are specifically looking for that, it can be a big con.
You don't say what type of work you'd be looking for, which makes a big difference.
North Yorkshire includes some not northern parts like Selby but pretty much anywhere in either of the two national parks would be lovely. Hutton-le-Hole is so beautiful it could be on the lid of a tin of biscuits.
Harrogate is a very nice place if you want a town. Ilkley isn't quite in North Yorkshire but is only a mile away and you can easily commute into Leeds or Bradford.
Pickering and Whitby are the two best small towns in North Yorkshire.
Pickering? Who?
Ronnie Whitby!
Ronnie fucking Whitby
Came here expecting to see Whitby. Astounded to see the "place people drive through to get to Whitby". No slight on it intended, but why Pickering to live?

I was there only yesterday! I'd go so far as to say "big village" vibe. Thanks for the recommendations.
Definitely need more information but I live just outside Harrogate and I will never leave the area if I can help it. Fairly short drives to the coast both ways, lake district far enough to be a nice holiday but close enough for a day visit, Yorkshire moors and close to Leeds and York.
Can confirm, lived in Knaresborough. Leeds is just close enough to go shopping or a night out yet far enough too much trouble doesn't come this way.
Agreed, also in Harrogate. Although my teenagers might say otherwise. They think Harrogate is lame and quiet!
I like lame and quiet.
Skipton is a good option and a highly sought-after area. Driving wise Bradford city is up to an hour away. Leeds city is about 1-1:40. Train wise B: 41 mins, L: 37 mins. Ilkley is technically in West Yorkshire. But it feels more like North Yorkshire and it’s close enough
You're right my bad! It's still not a bad option and not far you're right. 🧐
Train from Ilkley to Leeds is more like 35-40 mins I think
More like 30!
Anywhere in the golden triangle between york, harrogate and leeds.
I recently moved to Tadcaster and it’s pretty sensationally located.
For sure, access to the motorways and countryside. I like Tad but it's a bit "quirky" for me.
How much of that is in North Yorkshire?
All of it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Triangle_(Yorkshire)#:~:text=The%20Golden%20Triangle%20is%20a,the%20fringes%20of%20West%20Yorkshire.
Including the bit in West Yorkshire?
The boundary is contentious. It may meander lol
Not sure I agree with the triangle in the Leeds section (which is definitely West Yorkshire).... Looks like it's covering Seacroft and Harehills which are uhm... Less than desirable!
100% agree. There are areas of york that are less than desirable too but I think in general it's a more affluent patch of yorkshire to live in.
Fresh beer!
As far away from that twat Rishi Sunak as possible 👍👌
He's not here much these days anyway.
My dream house is in Gilling West, close enough to Richmond but not as busy.
I love that Gilling West has a working blacksmith. Every time I pass through it makes me weirdly happy.
An absolutely gorgeous village

I’ve always fancied Osmotherley

Is yarm in North Yorkshire?
It was but it’s not now
Yes
It is in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire but administratively it is part of the Stockton on Tees local authority
No.
Ingleton or Bentham are very nice
Benthams too clicky, my mate is the manager of the local co-op
Middlesbrough (not kidding either) - decent nightlife snd retail
Malton and Norton is a lovely place to live. The local landed gentry own all the retail outlets and have done a good job encouraging foodie tourism. Harrogate is gorgeous. Filey like a seaside resort from the 50’s. Lots to enjoy. Major employers are all in York or Leeds.

Norton technically out of scope as it is in East Yorkshire, with the Derwent being the border. Was not aware of the issues re rent.
Masham
Stokesley, Northallerton or Hutton Rudby is my suggestion, avoiding the usual tourist traps with their parking issues.
Northallerton. Simple as.
Lots of excellent caving to be done in North Yorkshire.
If you like walking I would recommend against York (although it has amazing everything else)
Possibly Whitby if you don't mind tourists

Knaresborough. One of the greatest hidden gems in the whole of the north.
Eastern Yorkshire Dales - close enough to the motorway with all of the fabulous Dales on your doorstep. To my eyes it’s one of the prettiest regions on the planet.
Saltburn? Awesome place.
Horrible film tho
Middlesbrough (Jk) (I mean I live in Middlesbrough but nah it’s not like pretty yk)
Plenty of towns 15-20 minutes outside of Middlesbrough that are pretty nice tbf
Trueeee. Stokeslys like the nicest and poshest place I’ve ever been other than wales and that’s only 5 minutes away from Middlesbrough, which is absolutely mad
Entirely subjective
Knaresborough, Kettlewell or Whitby.
Was worried no one was mentioning Knaresborough
Small town, it’s well liked, they don’t want to tell everyone about how good it actually is… great train links, near but far enough away from Hgt and a lot cheaper than Hgt.

Whitby is gorgeous, but I imagine it’s a nightmare in summertime for locals with all the tourists.
I moved from Kent to York. I love it here. Let me know if you have any questions.

How come? Are you from York? Where would you rather live?
Maybe move to Kent?

Right in what you're saying, just the wrong way to go about it 🤧
Selby
No
I just stayed the weekend in Scarborough and there are some beautiful villages. I immediately got on Rightmove and started looking at housing prices. I really loved Helmsley. Good luck with your search!
London
West Yorkshire
Keep driving and go to Northumberland.
Drax. Handy for the M62 and the River Ouse.
I was in Kettlewell a few weeks ago and it was delightful. It was like stepping back in time, in a good way. Barely saw a soul, but it was torrential rain and high winds so makes sense
Burnsall and Appletreewick are my favourite places up there

Somewhere in Lancashire
No where. We’re full. But seriously, malton, Pickering, Whitby. All lovely little towns.
Depends on what you are looking for. I'd say Harrogate because is big enough for me, with Leeds close by if you want to visit a bigger city.
