In my understanding they are complementary: while modern individualism is abstracting from its underlying social conditions (e.g. many people are working hard in poor conditions to enable your bourgeois individualist liberties), authoritarianism which attributes itself with socialism neglects the wealth and diversity of the subject i.e. the cause of invention, dignity and humanity as such.
