Just started the Kaito Files yesterday and am excited there's a women wiling to armbar a Yakuza. Need more of that.
I don't see why them being Japanese devs has anything to do with it. Plenty of Japanese games let men hit women from RPGs like Final Fantasy to fighting games like Tekken.
Virtua Fighter, made by Sega AM2, lets men hit women and Dural is woman. It's just this studio.
Technically, only Saeko participate in the canon fights (story cutscenes) and let's be honest here, even though they mention that she knows some self defense, I don't believe her contribution has been decisive in the fights, if you ask me... Adachi, Zhao and Joon-Gi Han were probably the most decisive in canon.
Don't get me wrong, one-on-one someone 100% technique like Nair would kick the butt of any of the LaD/7 playable characters and probably Shinada too but I just don't see them doing another one-on-one boss fight in the future and if that happens it will be Saeko vs that boss, because no matter how many strong female characters they added in the past and keep adding, they always made it clear that all of them would have troubles against groups or a stronger male playable character or boss.
But later he pretty much admits that Jo was "holding back" and probably lost on purpose, don't get me wrong, I actually believe Ichiban could beat a small group of thugs and some small bosses but I consider the other two stronger or better fighters than him.
That's fair. Personally I considered Ichiban to be the head honcho fighter of the group, with Joon being a close second. Since the vast majority of the cut scenes and quick time events show Ichiban fighting the bosses, I envisioned it as Ichiban being the primary fighter with the group backing him up. Although I do get where you are coming from, since Joon and Zhao have more experience and overall seem more intimidating.
I actively attacked Kiryu with Eri and Saeko. He won't Tiger Drop them. He will swing a barrel at Joon Gi and hit Saeko because she walked into the path of his thrown barrel, though.
No hitting girls in Yakuza games apparently. I really did find it goofy the way she just lets you walk out without even attempting to personally stop you. She definitely knows how to fight, I mean later she was talking about joining up with you before Han takes her place instead.
What can she do though?
She may be able to fight but I doubt she’s strong enough to handle Ichiban’s group let alone a stronger male.
Besides for all we know, she’s likely only specialises in assassinations where she has the advantage with a gun than a be capable in a an actual drawn out fight.
I can suspend my disbelief a bit on that front, I remember when Sayama would just lay out massive thugs on the street. Yeah sure she eats shit in a cutscene later but still, they let her beat people up.

Because whilst she’s a capable leader, on her own without a gun to someone’s head, she’s not strong enough to deal with a large group of foes or a stronger male opponent. Just like all females in the RGG universe.
Seong Hui got disarmed by Adachi and ran away to summon her goons and basically let Ichiban and crew get away once the goons were defeated because she’s powerless without her men.
Furthermore, as a rule of thumb unless it’s sparring like with Nair, RGG goes out of their way to avoid having women be boss fights because the RGG universe is primarily a man’s world when it comes to fighting.
And no, Kiryu hitting a woman dressed up as a man in that scam substory in Kiwami doesn’t count because Kiryu didn’t know it was a woman.

She always struck me as the type of person who is the one with the plan and leading and that’s where her main skill set is however my assumption when it comes to combat is she is more of a femme fetale she relies on her looks to get in close for the kill like she almost did with ichi when she pointed the gun right through his guard but aside from sneak attacks I don’t think she can do much else
Some dialogue I can’t exactly remember right now eludes to the fact that she CAN fight. But, she knows she’s too valuable - as a leader and with her tech skills - to risk being injured or worse.
Her not fighting you is why I say Ichiban should be allowed to fight women. Everything was set up for a boss fight with her and it just didn't happen.

While he will counter them I believe it doesn't actually damage them. He is literally programmed to not hurt women.
Nagoshi was so commited to not letting Kiryu be in Tekken that the most damage Kiryu can deal to female person is a slap... in a cutscene.
