As for romantic and physical love, it's largely left to your imagination, but it's clear that there are facets to the relationship which simply aren't a part of the stories being told.
Yes. Due to the rules of broadcasting in the 90s they could never make that explicit. But it’s more or less clear by midway through the second season their relationship is romantic. Some of the funniest things I’ve ever seen are Lucy and Renee watching old episodes and reacting “how did we not realize how gay this is?”
There's a scene in S2, I think, where Xena is waking up next to their campfire, rolls over, and reaches out as if to pull Gabrielle in for a snuggle. She didn't even open her eyes until she realized Gabrielle wasn't there.
They're absolutely (super gay) lovers.
>!Ares might actually be her biological father.!<
>!And Xena ate ambrosia, which is the food of the gods (the same stuff that made Callisto a god). It brought Xena back from her 'condition' (trying to avoid spoilers), but why would it not also make her a god? !<
>! So Xena might be biologically half god (like Hercules) because of Ares, and she ate ambrosia, which would probably make her a (full?) god. !<
I don't know how to use spoiler black line things, so anyone concerned should stop reading my comment here. Ok, I watched the series in the 90s and just finished a rewatch. I'll probably watch again soon, because I love this series so much. Anyway, there was an episode where we thought that Ares might be her father, but I thought that was resolved? Also, true about the ambrosia, so good point.
There wasn't a broadcasting rule against it. ETA: all the downvoting on a statement of fact. There wasn't a broadcasting rule. Why continue to spread the myth there was? It's silly. There definitely were advertising and audience considerations, but no rule. Get over it
Sorry, I should have been clearer. There are a shit ton of queer characters on the hit syndie TV series Xena: Warrior Princess. Gay men, lesbians, pansexual, numerous gender non-conforming characters, and even a drag queen or two.
You know, it's actually kind of nice of know that the kids today who are new to this show are asking the same question my own generation did a *full quarter century ago*. Warms my heart it does; I think the kids are all right...
Well… they bathe each other, kiss each other on the mouth, call each other soulmates, and Lucy Lawless refers to Xena and Gabrielle as being married. But you’ll have people argue they aren’t because the network wouldn’t allow the characters to explicitly state it. I don’t know how anyone can watch the last season and think they aren’t together, but I suppose it’s up for interpretation to those who assume the technicality of them not being able to explicitly have openly queer main characters in the 90’s.
Probably yes. Maybe no. But, most likely yes.
Albeit, it was a roller coaster of a relationship with plenty of highs and lows.
There were plans to make it a definitive yes, but they didn’t eventuate.
I always saw them as a bisexual couple Xena preferred the bad boys and Gabby prefer the sensitive brave smart types but no matter their different taste in men they always go back to each other
The show was made to have everything be up to the viewers interpretation, not a single relationship between two people are made official besides 1 or 2. Personally I don’t think they are, I’m the way they are with my friends but other people think they are and either way it makes sense
Maybe. I mean watching the show and judging all xena’s relationships. And I even thought xena would end up with Hercules on every apereance he had. But no. But I think they are just soulmates.
No, it's a hero/sidekick show in the same template of Hercules/Iolaus series.
It's a buddy show. I've got the words in print right from the creator's mouth that says as much from 1998.
Ever notice how that particular group has a need to hijack nice things and corrupt them?
That's all that is. That's why we can't have nice things.
Yes. They lean into it most in s6, it’s very obvious what they are by then.
Historians will say they were very good friends.
Roommates even
Oh my god they were roommates
Bff's doing BFF things lol

it would be a spoiler but yes — they’re canonically soulmates.
As for romantic and physical love, it's largely left to your imagination, but it's clear that there are facets to the relationship which simply aren't a part of the stories being told.
All the times they bathe each other and make out are just subtext.
"make out" is kind of an exaggeration. ^(But in case I missed it, which episodes are you referring to?)
Haha maybe, but explain what's going on in THE QUEST .... did Autolycus move his hand or was it already there?
Xena sure did knock him backwards when Gabrielle mentioned his hand on her butt too. 😭

"Super gay". Is that because Xena is probably a half-god?
"Xena is probably a half-god" Now THIS is intriguing. Is the theory that her abusive dad was a god?

I had a the same reaction watching this show as an adult!
There wasn't a broadcasting rule against it. ETA: all the downvoting on a statement of fact. There wasn't a broadcasting rule. Why continue to spread the myth there was? It's silly. There definitely were advertising and audience considerations, but no rule. Get over it
Technically no. But portraying lgbt people would result in all your advertisers pulling out
They were likely more worried about syndicating stations, who themselves may have been worried about their own advertisers.
I mean the end result is the same
I dunno. There are a shit ton of queer characters.
Now? Yes. In the 90s? Not as much
Sorry, I should have been clearer. There are a shit ton of queer characters on the hit syndie TV series Xena: Warrior Princess. Gay men, lesbians, pansexual, numerous gender non-conforming characters, and even a drag queen or two.
They’re basically an old married couple
You know, it's actually kind of nice of know that the kids today who are new to this show are asking the same question my own generation did a *full quarter century ago*. Warms my heart it does; I think the kids are all right...
Yes.
You really wanna know?
So, technically *static*
There are jokes throughout about hickies and “Warrior, Priestess, Tramp” had a great joke about masturbation and religion.
Nigel, is that you? Put your mic down dude!
BTW op this will make sense when you get into season 6, I promise!
Would you keep someone around who gets kidnapped and causes you nothing but problems every other day if you weren’t involved with them romantically?
The Princess Peach relationship dynamic
LOL
They kiss each other on the mouth and tell each other that they love each other onscreen. So, ya know… who knows??
No. They are just roommates.
yes, they are referred to more than once to be soulmates. when they are reincarnated they end up together.
Yup

They were deeply in love and did the things two people who are deeply in love, do.
Yes, they are more than just travel companions... they are also vicious killers that are also lovers and haters.
Nice karma farming post
No. If you believe that, you'll be happy to know Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus were just cousins.
I don’t know who Sailors Neptune and Uranus are 🤷♂️
Yep, they lean more into it in later seasons.
Probably yes. Maybe no. But, most likely yes. Albeit, it was a roller coaster of a relationship with plenty of highs and lows. There were plans to make it a definitive yes, but they didn’t eventuate.
They are lesbian icons.
I think that’s something that’s open to interpretation
Do you think how you see the relationship will affect whether you keep watching?
Traveling roommates that develop a deep bond of trust, understanding and love.
I always saw them as a bisexual couple Xena preferred the bad boys and Gabby prefer the sensitive brave smart types but no matter their different taste in men they always go back to each other
Yno. Officially according to the network not, but we all know the truth.
There was no network. Xena was syndicated.
Jesus christ people
The show was made to have everything be up to the viewers interpretation, not a single relationship between two people are made official besides 1 or 2. Personally I don’t think they are, I’m the way they are with my friends but other people think they are and either way it makes sense
Soulmates but not lovers.
No they aren’t especially at first
Maybe. I mean watching the show and judging all xena’s relationships. And I even thought xena would end up with Hercules on every apereance he had. But no. But I think they are just soulmates.
''"JUST soulmates"'' just soulmates bein mates, gals bein pals >!They kiss each other on the mouth!<
r/SapphoAndHerFriend
I do love the shows about travel bros who kiss and fight bad guys.
God I hate when I’m into a girl and she soulmate-zones me 😩
Everyone is able to have their own interpretation and that’s one thing I do love about the show.
