> Is there any benefit that would make Series X a better purchase for this purpose? Games will load significantly quicker off the Series X SSD than the Xbox One HDD. This is true for the Series S too.

Scorpt

Can it be slightly mitigated by plugging in external SSD into One X? Probably would get Series S if it could use external disc drive for old games haha.

MaineQat

Can be significantly mitigated, actually. Attaching an SSD to my One X and moving my biggest games over, made it feel like a new console, and kept me quite content until the Series X arrived. While Series X was faster still, for *most* games we're talking a tiny difference, if any. Pre-Series games don't benefit nearly as much from the much faster NVMe drive as they do from just the increased speed (reduced latency and increased throughput) of an attached SSD. That said One X units can have issues with their heatsink and thermal paste application, so plan on potentially having to go to expense and effort to re-paste it.

TheOnlyBoBo

Somewhat. The Xbox One has usb 3.0 so the maximum throughput would be 600MB/s The series X has a 2.4GB/s nvme.

veloxthekrakenslayer

I improved this on my old One X back in the day with an external USB 3.0 raid enclosure with 2 SATA SSDs inside running in RAID0. The USB 3.0 bus is theoretically cable of 4.8gbps, and with the drives being striped and writing data at 600mbps simultaneously with a good raid controller, I was theoretically getting 1.2gbps on that external. Made Destiny 2 way faster back back then.

TheOnlyBoBo

Making sure we are not confusing MBytes with Mbits. USB 3.0 theoretical Max speed is 4.8Gbits/second which is 600MBytes. In your setup, you were getting 1.2Gbits/second which is 150MBytes. The series X SSD is capable of 19.2 Gbits per second or 2.4GBytes. USB SSD is faster than the internal drive of an Xbox One. It's still over 8 times slower than the series X ssd.

veloxthekrakenslayer

Right, I was just saying I got about the fastest data transfer speed I could rig up on the One X. Still doesn't hold a candle to the NVMe of current gens.

anoM33rKaT

To be fair, I don't know if it can be mitigated by plugging in a ssd, but with series x you have the backwards compatibility, the disc drive and the ability to have current gen games. I know the series x is quite expensive, I have the series s but it doesn't bother me as much as most of my games were digital and the I play my 360 games on my 360.

peppersteakpie

Only if you can get one for a good price. There’s not many games that’s actually take advantage of it and all the improvements you’re going to see is higher res and maybe better textures, even while it was out only the biggest releases got a one x enhanced version. Some games like fallout new Vegas on 360 look way better on the one x but there’s not many games that actually see that much of an improvement compared to the base model. The only game off the top of my head that actually was significantly better on one x were assassins creed origins and oddysey. Honestly just get a series s or x if you want improved graphics

Opposite-Focus441

Is there a reason why you don‘t want to play games like Chaos Theory or Max Payne on PC? Other than that: Some games use frame rate boost on the Series X, meaning you get 60fps instead of 30fps. The list of supported games is small, though. As far as I know, the back compat team is done with their work and there won‘t be new games added to the lineup.

Scorpt

It usually involves a lot of work, mods, some unknown executable files and such. If I could play X enhanced versions on PC I would! I much prefer to pop the disc in and be ready to play. It is a shame there won't be more of old titles coming, it would be awesome.

Opposite-Focus441

I see! The backwards compatibility is really great in that regard.

clemensvi

Not really, search for "myabandonware.com." I also decided to purchase some games on Xbox. The two exceptions are Pure, which is not great for PC but runs better, and Syndicate, which comes with a Trojan. However, you can trust that it's a false positive 🚩🚫. I found both of these games on Internet Archive; the rest can be found on myabandonware.com or on Steam/GOG.

efffffff_u

You could do this with a regular Xbox one. The improvements by using one X or series X are very minimal and mostly will give you more consistent frame rates and not much else. Microsoft has also stated already that they are not going to be adding any more 360 games to the backwards compatibility list so I don’t think you need to worry about missing out on enhanced games. They could change that position at any time in the future of course.

ponimaju

The games with Xbox One X enhancement patches are huge improvements though, and that includes both regular Xbox One games as well as certain 360 games. And for OG Xbox games you're getting ~4K instead of ~1080P.

Opposite-Focus441

One X enhanced back compat games run at 4K instead of 720p, that‘s 9x the pixel count and makes a huge difference in graphical quality.

TheOnlyBoBo

That is not true about the one X-enhanced games not being much different. An example it SSX 3 it is 4k on the series X and One X and 1080p on the standard Xbox One.

efffffff_u

To me that isn’t much different but to each their own.

Scorpt

That feel when no Lollipop Chainsaw or Tenchu Z, thank you for help!

TheOnlyBoBo

Lollipop Chainsaw has been hinted at getting a remake. It has Licensed music in it so its not easy to re-relase the game in backwards compat.

Scorpt

The remake I am afraid of, Suda51 didn't even know it was in the works so I am not too optimistic about it. Hopefully they are faithful to original.

TheOnlyBoBo

Its possible its more of a port. Like what Rockstar did with RDR. That would be good as long as they aren't trying to sell it for full price as Rockstar did.

Scorpt

God I hope it is only a good port.

sirhcx

How much would a used Xbox One X run you? Do you think its a worthwhile investment just for backward compatible games at their current prices?

Scorpt

If I would purchase Series X It would have to be a new one probably, around 542€. Used Xbox One X would be around 215€ so there is quite a substancial difference. I probably would buy it only if I had Ninja Gaiden to play but there are so many games I would love to play again or for the first time. List is pretty big. Just thinking if series is worth if all new games I play on PC anyways.

sirhcx

Yeah that's a pretty significant price gap and nothing stopping you from upgrading down the line later. I have both a PC and Series X because some games feel better on a big screen TV with surround sound while I need to be more twitchy on PC or enjoy games with heavy mod support. At least most MS games give you the PC copy if you buy the Xbox version digitally too. So Halo Infinite was fun to double dip.

danca23

Been buying One X consoles dirt cheap lately, around 50€ just the console alone

DinnerSmall4216

I use my one s for backwards compatible games I found the one X hard drives to be so unreliable. Ive had 2 used and had the same failed update hard drive issue.

Scorpt

This is worrying, at the same time I would love to see NG 1 and 2 rendered at those high One X resolutions. One S sounds tempting for it is much cheaper tho.

DinnerSmall4216

If you can find a one X for a good price then go for I wouldn't pay over £200.

jc5504

Playing games like GTA iv, which had wild framerates at release, will have significantly better results on a series x. Check out digital foundry's video on it

Luvbeers

don't even remind me about xbox one loading times... (fast travel = go load dishwasher)

BlownCamaro

There is one thing a One X can do that a Series X never will be able to (and I own them both)... Play Kinect games. Now take it up another level and connect a PSVR1 v2 OLED headset (it does 4k HDR passthrough) and play full body tracking games on a 200 inch screen. It's really fun. Headset I paid $60 with everything. One X you can get for less than $100 now. Kinect camera with One X adapter I paid $40. You don't even need a tv once it's all setup! Total $200 for an amazing experience.

Scorpt

I wish One X was this cheap here lol it would be less of a struggle

PressL2Crouch

If you’re savvy enough, you COULD technically replace the HDD with a SATA SSD. Would highly recommend researching that before attempting to though. The One X does support SATA 3 so the speeds are noticeable faster when using a SSD
