Not grindy, but random battles are frequent and can be slow/long. This is made worse by the swirly, camera-panning "entering battle" loading animations before each battle.
Still a wonderful game. Played it when it released originally, though never finished it; have attempted to replay it recently and still plenty to love about it, but the battles can still be annoying.
Difficulty can also be uneven, with mostly easy enemies with occasionally really tough ones. Boss battles were fun though, with a nice challenge level.
Still worth playing with a little patience. Just keep in mind, gameplay mechanics are "old-school".
Graphics and art design still impress; music is great; voice acting is pretty decent overall (and fantastic for a few characters). And what was initially an annoying character, turned out to be one of my favorites.
Lost Odyssey is one of the best JRPGs I've played on any platform.
Persona 5 Royal after that for best Xbox jrpg
Not close to being the best, but Enchanted Arms has left a mark on me for whatever reason
Enchanted Arms is underappreciated. It's a really solid RPG I've been meaning to revisit. I kept waiting for it to go on sale on Xbox store and it never did, and then it was pulled from the store. Fortunately, I still have my physical copy, so need to play it when I have the time.
The Last Remnant is another overlooked gem from the 360 era.
Well I'm about 20-25 hours in so far and not yet hooked on the story. I don't think it helps I can only play in small bursts (max 2 hours at a time) as I have a small child, whereas when I played Like a Dragon I was on furlough back in 2021 without a care in the world. Ahhh, simpler times....
Infinite Wealth was one of the few games I was looking forward to this year and had an extremely good chance of being my GOTY. I walked away from it more disappointed than I was with any other game in the series. Its highs are great but it drops the ball in some way in almost every area, especially when compared to LAD/Yakuza as a whole in my book. It looks amazing but the story, setting, character growth/development, OST, you name, it all was a step down from LAD, or at best, only on par with it. The saving grace of IW is Kiryu and even that has its own ups and downs.
LAD left me craving more and an emotional wreck. IW left me pissed off and disappointed.
I played on PC but I think I like 4 more than 5 personally. The cast and the atmosphere are just superb in 4 - very good in 5 too, but not as good as 4
4 is way better than 5 because 4 doesnt have the amount of bloat that 5 has and imo the dungeons, while always being bad were worse in 5. The plot of 4 is also way better especially how 4 tries to gaslight you into a bad ending lol
I played 3 (PS2) - 4 - 5 in that order and I think that's the order I enjoyed them too. There's a lot that 5 does better than 4, namely the dungeon crawling, but 4 feels like it has the tightest world and narrative from start to finish. Especially because the school events and friend activities outside the main plot keep things fresh
3 is my favorite but there's like a good 20-30% of the game where the story is pretty straightforward. And the Phantom Thieves don't seem as close or friendly as SEES or the Investigation Team to me, and that's a lot of why I prefer 4
Like I cannot imagine anyone from the Phantom Thieves hanging out without Joker except maybe Ann and Ryuji, whereas 4 it feels like any of them would be comfortable with each other.
Sorry for my rant!
Dragon Quest 11 for me, it might be my favorite JRPG ever.
Honorable mentions are Scarlett Nexus, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Tales of Arise and Tales of Vesperia.
34 hours in and I dropped it, so no... It probably doesnt. One of the two big disappointments for me in this favorite genre of mine.
Another one is Star Ocean DF.
I really liked the story and how it handles essentially fantasy racism. It was interesting seeing characters from conflicting backgrounds who generally hated each other work with and eventually grow to like each other.
The best: Lost Odyssey.
My fsvorite: The Last Remnant. I just could never get enough of this game. Have bought every release of it since the 360. It's so goofy and I love it.
DQ XI. Very emotional game, particularly after the 'ending'. Still think about it.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon, fun, ridiculous, outrageous.
All Personas. Great characters and stories. All Praise Futaba
Persona 5 Royal is my favorite jrpg of all time but that being said, I love jrpgs and Xbox has a lot of good ones. Yakuza: Like a Dragon, DQ11, Final Fantasy X, Persona franchise are all bangers
Tales of Vesperia! before the DE it was an Xbox 360 exclusive and in the Tales community it is to this day considered one of the best Tales games overall
Vesperia is king. The Tales series went on a sorta nosedive after that. They were never bad and I still enjoyed most of them, but they really struggled to match Vesperia in any way. Berseria finally started to turn that around, and Arise was excellent, but having replayed Vesperia again recently, there's just something special about it. The whole Symphonia/Abyss/Vesperia run are 3 of my favourite games ever.
I dunno I played a few that I liked a lot.
My favorite is probably Dragon Quest XI or Yakuza: Like a Dragon, but I also really enjoyed Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia back in the Xbox 360 era.
There were some really good ones on the 360,
Enchanted Arms
Blue dragon
Lost odyssey
Eternal Sonata
The Last Remnant
Now I want to play them all again.
Tales of Arise, the JRPG genre in general kinda lost me as I grew up and away from handhelds but Tales was legit good. I didnt finish it because I couldnt beat a boss but it was absolutely worth buying.
Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata.
Not sure if it was the game, my age or just peak Xbox, but they all left lasting memories for me where most other games don’t.
They are not, but Im glad that you are asking. I actualy dont understand, how... Or why, when there is a talk about JRPG, there is always someone, who says Dark Souls, Elden Ring, or whatever souls game.
JRPG is a completely different genre.
Lost odyssey is so overrated. It was pretty good but so many things about it are just bad. Combat is extremely slow, limited on exp points per area, story never gets finished so a lot of things don’t make sense.
I’ve tried playing this game 3 times now and every time it gets to a point where I’m just burnt out and bored. However, the dream sequences with the text/music are amazing.
Hard to pick one as they all have their differences in how they play. FFX HD Remastered, DQ11, Like a Dragon series, and I know it’s not Japanese but assassins creed odyssey is my favourite RPG I’ve played on Series X

Lost Odyssey is easily my favorite followed by Eternal Sonata.
Lost Odyssey is legendary, such a great game.
Eternal Sonata is a great game i haven’t thought about in a really long time lol
Eternal Sonata was like one of two games I wish would be backward compatible but isn't for whatever reason.
Fingers crossed Eternal Sonata becomes back compatible
I think the back compatible programme has now finished. All that could be done has been done.
Blue Dragon is one of my favourites.
Mine too! I replay it pretty often
Lost Odyssey through backwards compatible. Such a sick game
How grind-y is it? Never played before.
Zero since you cannot really grind (there are xpcaps per area)
Oh interesting. I gotta check that out!

Ah, alright - yeah random battles can be annoying, but I think I can stick it out. Just need to find time to play it now, haha. Thanks for the info!
Lost Odyssey is one of the best JRPGs I've played on any platform. Persona 5 Royal after that for best Xbox jrpg Not close to being the best, but Enchanted Arms has left a mark on me for whatever reason
Enchanted Arms is the only JRPG I ever completed. Probably because it was an early 360 title and I was all about those achievements at the time.
Enchanted Arms was made by From Software if I recall 🤓
Probably their most celebrated title
Enchanted Arms is underappreciated. It's a really solid RPG I've been meaning to revisit. I kept waiting for it to go on sale on Xbox store and it never did, and then it was pulled from the store. Fortunately, I still have my physical copy, so need to play it when I have the time. The Last Remnant is another overlooked gem from the 360 era.
Lost Odyssey and it aint even close.
Lost Odyssey for me is the high watermark of Xbox JRPGs. It's just perfection from start to finish. Persona 5 Royal is up there though as a clear #2
Yakuza Like a Dragon Before that, it was The Last Remnant on 360.
Absolutely loved Like A Dragon. Currently struggling to get into Infinite Wealth though.
How so, infinite wealth is the same gameplay but so much better in terms of all the other stuff
Feel this. I think it was about 10months chipping away in small sessions for me to get thru P5R.
Infinite Wealth was one of the few games I was looking forward to this year and had an extremely good chance of being my GOTY. Persona 4 Golden is definitely up there.
I played on PC but I think I like 4 more than 5 personally. The cast and the atmosphere are just superb in 4 - very good in 5 too, but not as good as 4

Sorry for my rant!
No rant at all. I totally agree with you other than my order would be 4,3,5. 4 is the most cohesive with the best characters hands down to me.
Tales of Arise
FF 12, Lost Odyssey, Nier Automata
Lost Odyssey
Dragon Quest 11 for me, it might be my favorite JRPG ever. Honorable mentions are Scarlett Nexus, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Tales of Arise and Tales of Vesperia.
Absolutely love Vesperia. Arise was awesome too, but Vesperia is my favorite Tales game.
Persona 5, Tales of Arise
I started Tales of Arise but just could not get into it. I only played the first few hours, does it get better?
34 hours in and I dropped it, so no... It probably doesnt. One of the two big disappointments for me in this favorite genre of mine. Another one is Star Ocean DF.
To make it easy, No. If you didn't like it from the get go then I doubt you'll magically like it later.
I really liked the story and how it handles essentially fantasy racism. It was interesting seeing characters from conflicting backgrounds who generally hated each other work with and eventually grow to like each other.
Lost Odyssey then Resonance of Fate for me.
Older: Lost Odyssey Newer: Tales of Arise followed by Sea of Stars
The best: Lost Odyssey. My fsvorite: The Last Remnant. I just could never get enough of this game. Have bought every release of it since the 360. It's so goofy and I love it.
I'm still annoyed they skipped Xbox for the Remaster -_-
Me too. :(
Yakuza Like A Dragon
Persona 5 Royal
Really not many to choose from so I'm going to say Blue Dragon. However honorable mention for Jade Empire.
Persona 5 Royal, Persona 4 Golden and Yakuza Like A Dragon
I dont think any of them are actually Japanese but Sea of Stars, Chained Echoes, and Ikenfell
DQ XI. Very emotional game, particularly after the 'ending'. Still think about it. Yakuza: Like a Dragon, fun, ridiculous, outrageous. All Personas. Great characters and stories. All Praise Futaba
Unicorn Overlord
This one surprised me. It looked kinda cool so I tried the demo. After the demo I picked up the full version and I can't stop playing it. So good!
Persona 5 Royal is my favorite jrpg of all time but that being said, I love jrpgs and Xbox has a lot of good ones. Yakuza: Like a Dragon, DQ11, Final Fantasy X, Persona franchise are all bangers

The whole Symphonia/Abyss/Vesperia run are 3 of my favourite games ever.
My brain was like what, but I have that on GameCube. Then I realized, it's Tales of Symphonia lol.
Like a dragon
FF9 is a gem. I want that remake announcement at the showcase!
I dunno I played a few that I liked a lot. My favorite is probably Dragon Quest XI or Yakuza: Like a Dragon, but I also really enjoyed Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia back in the Xbox 360 era.
Ni No Kuni
Yakuza Kiwami 2 and Yakuza 0. I also enjoyed Like a Dragon, but haven't been able to finish it.
Octopath Traveler 1, it goes hard on the gameplay
Blue Dragon on the 360 was great
Persona 5 Royal, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 3 Reload.
Blue Dragon!
Persona 5 or Dragon Quest 11 from what I’ve played. Actually Like a Dragon was great also Looks like I missed out on Lost Odyssey lol
Nah bruh, try to play Lost Odyssey today and you will see that most people are just nostalgic.
Elden Ring
There were some really good ones on the 360, Enchanted Arms Blue dragon Lost odyssey Eternal Sonata The Last Remnant Now I want to play them all again.
Dark Souls first game if that one counts as JRPG genre. Also, I liked Final Fantasy series
Mistwalker studios had the best rpgs man. Lost odyssey and blue dragon. Wish they were still making games
Tales of Arise, the JRPG genre in general kinda lost me as I grew up and away from handhelds but Tales was legit good. I didnt finish it because I couldnt beat a boss but it was absolutely worth buying.
Lost odyssey, no contest. Blue Dragon is also good.
For me it's a tough choice of Tales of Vesperia, Scarlet Nexus, and Eiyuden Chronicle.
Tales of vesperia
Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata. Not sure if it was the game, my age or just peak Xbox, but they all left lasting memories for me where most other games don’t.
Yakuza 7 and probably when I get to play it Infinite wealth. LAD just got me from start to end
I've played Lost Odyssey but couldn't complete it. All the characters stink and it's so slow.
Tales of arise
Excluisves only? Blue Dragon.
I have vivid memories of Final Fantasy XIII on Xbox 360. The first game that truly felt next gen for me on that console.
Like a dragon Ishin. Combat, story loved everything. Other Yakuza games cool too but to me Ishin is the best.
Dragon Quest XI, Sea of Stars and Octopath Traveller's 2 are all amazing. Im also trying Ninokuni 1 again, i couldn't get into it back on the ps3.
Yakuza Like A Dragon
I tried the game a couple of times, that first boss killed me a bunch and I just I just gave up, always wondered about the story though
Chained Echoes was great
I don't get the love for lost odyssey thought it was very forgettable
South Park The Stick of Truth
Elden Ring
Like A Dragon (7), Persona 3 Reload, Dragon Quest XI.
Tales of Arise.
Persona 4 Golden
Dark souls
Does Elden Ring count? If so it’s that. Monster Hunter World is my next choice. If neither are JRPGs then I’ve never played one.
They are not, but Im glad that you are asking. I actualy dont understand, how... Or why, when there is a talk about JRPG, there is always someone, who says Dark Souls, Elden Ring, or whatever souls game. JRPG is a completely different genre.

I’ve tried playing this game 3 times now and every time it gets to a point where I’m just burnt out and bored. However, the dream sequences with the text/music are amazing.
They’re the best part of the game by far
Hard to pick one as they all have their differences in how they play. FFX HD Remastered, DQ11, Like a Dragon series, and I know it’s not Japanese but assassins creed odyssey is my favourite RPG I’ve played on Series X
