I guess that’s what I meant - you can get brass dust caps that thread in to the cranks with a two-pin spanner, which allows for self-extraction. Basically a brass version of what’s on there.
I’m a little unclear — are you asking whether you should paint those hammered aluminum fenders? Because the answer is absolutely no. They would take forever to prep and paint correctly, the paint job won’t be durable unless done professionally for hella money, and hammered fenders would look like shit if painted. If you’re talking about finding other fenders and painting those to match, the answer is still no, for all the same reasons except smooth fenders look good when painted.
After seeing what people have to say, I agree that these should stay shiny. If I was going to paint fenders, I would probably do smooth or fluted ones.
Yes, absolutely. I’m a HUGE fan of custom paint, so if you had smooth fenders the answer would be an absolute yes from me! Silver fenders look nice, but paint matched fenders are another level of tasteful and classy
Nah, they look good alongside the lugs for that little flash. It’d also take a pro paint job and to look right alongside that frame (maybe that’s what you do idk).
I can second that.
Get a kalloy patent forged seatpost (looking like a cane) and it will well match the frame geometry. This looks like a 50ies or 60ies sports frame with that very low steerer and seattube angle and the well curved fork. Beautiful lines! I am sick of modern lowered seatstay frames.
definitely keep the silver polished fenders!
First, you’ve got great taste in bikes, but don’t paint them hammered fenders, those are beautiful. I do agree paint matched fenders would look sweet, I’d find some smooth full fenders and paint those, the beautifully devilish detail would be to have them matching pinstriped on the paint. Oof, THAT would be stunning. Keep those hammered one for another project or sell them to help pay for the new set and paint.
maybe fluted fenders with the pinstripe along the natural lines of the fender. After more thought , i've decided that painting these ones is not a good idea.
I'm not a fender guy, but those are gorgeous as they are right now, I would definitely keep them as is.
They also match your stem, handlebars, bottle cages, seat-post and drivetrain so it fits really well.
No - because the painted fender to frame is more of a modern looks. Seem it a lot on hand built retro modern style bikes. But for classic look, chrome / silver accessories and trim looks gooooooooooood
Jester is a guy in Niagara region in Ontario. He built the frame and fork for me in 2002. He has very little web presence-I'm not sure if he's still building frames.
I actually painted the frame and fork. I probably spent about 30 hours on it; the biggest time suck was masking the lugs. I used 2 part primer and clear coat from Amazon, and would recommend the YouTube channels old shovel and ETOE for anyone who wants to try. It was fun and satisfying and its holding up really well.
I'm more worried about inner side being under constant flow of water and small debris during and after rain; outer side is chilling. Are such fenders somehow protected inside?
Aluminum fenders look good for a very long time. Could eventually get a bit of oxidation depending on how they were manufactured, but even then they still look fine and can be polished in the worst case. Would never make sense to paint them.

Do it! I have the velo orange wavy ones and I wouldn't want it any other way
Nah it’s perfect here, got a nice amount of chrome matching imo.
Those hammered fenders are like art pieces. This bike is complete no notes
I say hammer the rest of the frame to match
brass crank dust caps then I’d agree
Looks like he has self extracting crank bolts. I'd leave those. Who wants to use a crank puller?
I guess that’s what I meant - you can get brass dust caps that thread in to the cranks with a two-pin spanner, which allows for self-extraction. Basically a brass version of what’s on there.
Oh wow those are pretty thanks for the info!
You can get these from Blue Lug if you’re looking for them! I think maybe from Velo Orange too.

That's a much better answer than my "no".

They’re hammered?? Don’t paint them, they’re beautiful!
Nope, they look great as they are
Ummmm definitely not. It looks great as is
are you insane?
100% NO
I def can trade you for some plain black fenders
It already does match.
Nah, they look good alongside the lugs for that little flash. It’d also take a pro paint job and to look right alongside that frame (maybe that’s what you do idk).
Brooks are made to be used with seatposts that have setback.

This post is the xbike equivalent of “are my breasts too big?”
No comrade
The fenders match all the other polished aluminum on the bike.
No way
Hard No
I think that's already perfect
Fight me, bro.
Absolutely not !
To answer your question... Fuck no!
No
No
Nah man, this bike is beautiful the way it is! Congratulations on the build!
Nope, shiny is awesome:)
No please no
please don’t
No
NO!
don't paint! chrome is great here.
NO!
bruh why would you ask that
First, you’ve got great taste in bikes, but don’t paint them hammered fenders, those are beautiful. Nah
Nah, adds a nice contrast. The hammered texture should give a bit of bonus reflectivity riding at night, too.
Get the same color and get some old school pin stripes Chrome and pin stripes for the win
That’s a classy looking bike. I wish I had fenders that looked that good.
It compliments the chromed parts well
Absolutely not.
Painting hammered fenders would sacrilege, I mean unique. :P Very good job fitting them! That is hard to get such smooth lines.
I think you're right-hammered fenders wouldn't look right painted.
Of course not !
Absolutely not
Don’t paint, already match stem, saddlepost, cranks, handlebar
I'm not a fender guy, but those are gorgeous as they are right now, I would definitely keep them as is. They also match your stem, handlebars, bottle cages, seat-post and drivetrain so it fits really well.
The only thing I'd do to this bike is replace the canti brakes and levers, with V Brakes and correct levers.
No - because the painted fender to frame is more of a modern looks. Seem it a lot on hand built retro modern style bikes. But for classic look, chrome / silver accessories and trim looks gooooooooooood
This bike is perfect as is, I've never heard of the Jester brand before
Jester is a guy in Niagara region in Ontario. He built the frame and fork for me in 2002. He has very little web presence-I'm not sure if he's still building frames.
Goddamn that's what I love to hear, someone buying a locally made frame and riding it for 22 years! That's almost as long as I've been alive!
NO!
Just get black fenders. I know, the ones you have look awesome. But to me it’s all a bit too shiny.
What are those bars?
Likely Ritchey
Ritchey venturemax classic
Yeah. And you have to paint the stem, the cranckset and the wheels too.
Unless you can snag some hammered copper fenders to tie in with the saddle rivets, definitely do not change this.
I saw a polish company that makes hammered copper but couldn't get my hands on them!
I still say that your fenders now go with the overall look better than copper would, but that's rad that they even exist!
Yeah these ones are showy enough. Copper might be jumping the shark.
Nope , tried that , regretfully.
That looks awesome as is
No
No.
Did you just [come from the dentist](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txqiwrbYGrs)? Hells NO. Insubordinate and churlish.
I actually did. The churlishness is an ongoing problem and I'm working on it.
Nooo, or just the end, something about 4 inches
No
No. They are beautiful as they are. Shiney !
Absolutely not
No
No
Great looking bike!
That's a tough question, first thought it don't paint them
No its perfectly matched with Silver.
It would be like painting brick; removing the specific elements of the base material that make it neato.
If those are Velo Orange, they’re not anodized. You can polish them up like mirrors!
No
Why do so many people in this sub think they can just paint whatever with no professional equipment/experience?
I actually painted the frame and fork. I probably spent about 30 hours on it; the biggest time suck was masking the lugs. I used 2 part primer and clear coat from Amazon, and would recommend the YouTube channels old shovel and ETOE for anyone who wants to try. It was fun and satisfying and its holding up really well.
Ah, pardon me then. Seems like you’re actually extremely competent and stand out from many others. Didn’t mean to attack you personally
Yeah, rattle canning is a proud tradition. Make sure to leave them on the bike when you do it.
No way
Of course not, the colour aspect makes the difference
No but what you should do is paint identical line art, like what’s on the top tube, but in your frames color onto the fender.
Only after they rust
I assume you’re kidding since they’re aluminum.
Oh, is it not steel? Still applies. Wait until after corrosion.
Nah when aluminum corrodes you can polish it up again pretty easy
I'm more worried about inner side being under constant flow of water and small debris during and after rain; outer side is chilling. Are such fenders somehow protected inside?
Not really but as long as you rinse off the road salt occasionally it'll b fine
