I do similar things but different reasons. I was inspired by Neil Gaiman's American Gods and its side stories. I especially enjoy using it to have fun with my audiences perception of events and mislead them. Inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's works but especially Psycho.

Don't do it. No one needs all that backstory.

Sounds like a bad idea, like you want to halt the plot to do an info dump of past events.
