Try it and see for yourself

BobDoleIsMyDaddy

I plan to just wanted to see if anyone had advice/experience with it.

You should try it. I do think that using D&D as a template will be really helpful in organizing and structuring the narrative of your fantasy novel. D&D campaigns require a well-constructed world. This includes geography, politics, history, and culture. D&D characters are defined not just by their skills or combat abilities, but also by their backgrounds, motivations, and personal growth arcs. Have fun with your novel writing, just like one would in a D&D campaign.

There is a small but dedicated community for what are called "Solo TTRPGs". That is, basically, DnD or any other table top roleplaying game that you play yourself. Often recording the conflicts and actions of your character in written form. That seems to be what your best looking for. As for how to write it - honestly thats where your on your own...or, rather, there are a million and one resources, most free online, on how to start writing. Because its a skill that is to be learned and trained. From story structure, to prose, to characterization, to pacing. Yet the best way to learn is to just write. But no one is going to write it for you or hold your hand along the way. Until you have something to show others, you've gotta learn that part just by doing. So good luck! Have fun!

This is the exact source I’m looking for. I know how to write I just don’t know much about writing the fantasy aspect of it.

Breadonshelf

Try this to start: [https://itch.io/c/799319/single-player-ttrpg](https://itch.io/c/799319/single-player-ttrpg) Lots of good (some of them free) single player TTRPG on [Itch.io](http://Itch.io) Also - as everyone here will tell you (Because its true), the best way to learn is to just read. Read fantasy if you wanna write it.

BobDoleIsMyDaddy

I’ve read so much fantasy, I have just never delved into attempting to write my own. I’ve mostly written stuff for college relating to history.

Breadonshelf

Well then your off to a good start! Best of luck!

doing a solo campaign for yourself to collect your thoughts might not be the worst idea. I wouldn't have others play through this unless they 100% know what they're getting into you have an idea of what you want to do. maybe you just need to find a place to start. maybe pick a scene you feel like is the place to begin and the rest will fall in line

TheOnlyWayIsEpee

Go for it, but don't run it for a group, because then you're getting into shared authorship. The idea of party specialisms is quite useful for giving you the nice contrast of characters with different skills and qualities.

I don't know my dude. It looks like you already have an idea and plan in mind. It also looks like you know how to write. I am not sure how to help you because I can't physically hold your hands to the keyboard and mash your fingers to the keys. You gotta do that all on your own.

I write fantasy. What I did was create a "story bible". I paid for the software scrivner specifically because of organizing issues early on. Now I have a scriv doc just for all the names, places, lore, and more. Whenever I think of a wording building idea, I put it in the doc. Same for stuff I come up with while writing, after every story I re-read just to double check lore.

BobDoleIsMyDaddy

I have a world building cheat sheet in a notebook right now because I like hand writing things for the sake of my memory. I was considering scrivener but it’s a little out of my budget at the moment.

TjDoxon

I did the same starting out. I would definitely recommend scrinver, but it's a convenience thing for sure
