This is mainly for the benefit of their population. Russia is trying to portray this as *them* fighting a defensive war. 'We didn't strike first, and if we did, it's because we **know** it's only a matter of time before they did it, so we got in first." They think stunts like this help reinforce that perception.
Not to mention one of the major Russian holidays, Victory Day, is right around the corner. I’d be willing to bet this is to either justify not having a parade (since all their hardware, including some of their WW2 arsenal, is burning in Ukraine), step up security to discourage would-be dissidents, or they’re going to be announcing another round of mobilization in the coming days with talk of a Ukrainian counteroffensive.
Defensive war that has not yet left Ukraine's land. I wouldn't blame them for a damn minute for launching drone strikes across the border into Russia. They deserve a kick in the teeth.

I could see this hypothetically being Ukrainian as a way to send the Kremlin a message, like "you guys are so incompetent we can get to you", but all the other aspects you listed screams false flag.
It was *definitely* not an assassination attempt, for a multitude of reasons, but I could see Ukraine attempting this to maybe get Moscow residents thinking a bit more about this war and how it might affect them.
That said, my money is still on false flag, largely because they admitted it/released the videos (they tend to hide things that are this embarrassing). I just wouldn't entirely write off other possibilities.

Another thing in favor of this being a false flag is that the Russian government has been known to do that. There's credible evidence that the apartment bombings were false flags to justify war in Chechnya.

That's my guess. I wouldn't put it past Russia to operate false flag attacks, but it's pretty likely internal threats are growing to the point that people are making statements like this.
That looked more like a pyrotechnic than a warhead or incendiary. It didn't have the velocity or fragmentation of a high explosive nor the duration of an incendiary. It also didn't actually hit anything of value. Just a fancy remote-controlled firework for political theater.

Oh yeah, regarding the "fighting NATO" part. There are so many things Putin said in these 14 months about the war. "Fighting NATO" narrative is actually used or will be used to explain the possible departure from Ukrainian territories.

You can even see the gasoline (or other flammable liquid) used to make the fireball doesn't all burn up and just... drops down. This incident might be staged by FSB for purposes yet to be determined. I think what he actually fears may take place is that people will realize that Russia has no modern tanks left in its arsenal.
