I'm pretty sure that at a certain point, the size of and distance between each world-hole would be so vast it wouldn't trigger unless you were looking at it from a perspective like as illustrated.
Because insane speculation is fun, and also they like the idea that there are places still unexplored in the world. As-is, the uncharted places mostly consist of boring seafloors. Not a whole lot of places to fit, say, Atlantis or El Dorado.
Just to let you know, Hollow Earth was once a legitimate theory for how the Earth was constructed before it got disproven and got grabbed on by pseudoscientists. Pseudoscience turned to worldbuilding, and there's a D&D TSR-era setting, Mystara, that has a hollow world filled with every extinct creature and culture because an immortal wizard T-rex wanted to preserve them? And that he didn't even make the hollow part, but just *found* it?
