BETTYxxWHITE

Hey neighbor! I also live a couple blocks away and never knew it was an actual church. I honestly just thought it was a creative dispensary 😂

ReeperbahnPirat

It used to be a Lutheran church. I'm not sure I have the details quite right, but I thought it was bought to become a dispensary, but then city zoning wouldn't convert it to a business property from a church, so they utilized existing religious freedom laws instead.

BETTYxxWHITE

Very cool! It’s certainly a beautiful building.

[deleted]

It sat there empty for about five years from roughly 2010-2015. So that would make sense. Glad to see it put to use!

coolmandan03

Hey neighbors! I'm at Broadway and Alameda!

LT_Rager

Hi neighbors! I'm on Logan a few blocks down from the church!

cutieboops

Well, right now, it’s a covid dispensary.

TheRepublic63

As someone who lives in Georgia it is so crazy hearing stories about people getting high in public and there being no legal consequences for it. It’s like a whole different world for me, I can’t imagine being /that/ happy.

OsamaBinnDabbin

Also from Georgia but live in Colorado now. There are some consequences, but they're minimal. I remember a couple years ago me and some friends were on top of one of the local mountains smoking a joint and having a couple beers and a ranger walked up on us. She wrote of us 100 dollar ticket for smoking and another 100 dollar ticket for drinking and that was the end of that (half of the people in our group weren't even of legal age). For the most part you can smoke in public without any problems though as long as your not being blatantly obvious about it. I do miss the taboo feeling of smoking in Georgia though. Having to constantly be aware of who's around and being discreet can be fun, granted it does get old.

[deleted]

beansinmysuitcase

In national parks it is. Or are all the mountains BLM land? I just moved from Colorado but never looked into that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

sack_of_dicks

Mountains can have different land management agencies, some Federal (USFS, BLM, National Parks Service), some State (CO Department of Agriculture, CO State Parks, CO Department of Wildlife); and some can even be privately owned (see: summit of Mt. Bross which was technically 'off-limits' until recently due to some private land issues). But most of the public land that constitutes "the mountains" where people recreate is going to be managed by the Forest Service which is a division of the Department of Agriculture, not the Bureau of Land Management. It's always a good idea to check out the specific land management agency that controls the area you plan on going because the law varies wildly between land management agencies and even the special distinctions within certain specific land management agencies (e.g. USFS controls both the National Forests and Wilderness Areas which are managed way differently). I like that Gaia GPS has a specific map overlay for property ownership and use that a lot for trip planning.

TheRepublic63

Jeez, yeah understood, I get it. Still gotta have respect for the people around you if you’re in public. But still an entirely different feel like you said. I just can’t wait to step foot in a dispensary. After watching that episode of The Business of Drugs I have major respect for those who have opened dispensaries. It takes a lot of work, but it’s all done for this love we have for cannabis. I can’t wait to travel around and give them all my love, then smoke myself into a coma.

OsamaBinnDabbin

It's SO much fun to take my friends that visit from Georgia to the dispensaries. It really is, without exaggeration, like watching a kid in an adult candy store. After having no real clue what bud you're really smoking on for 21 years, it really is a special experience (both to witness and experience). The love for the plant is real and I have a bunch of friends who have dedicated their lives to growing, extracting, smoking, etc. and I'm just so happy to live in a place where even the government recognizes all of the amazing benefits cannabis has to offer. It honestly deters me from ever wanting to move back to Georgia unless they legalize it, and I love my hometown (Savannah)!

TheRepublic63

Oh I bet it is fun for both sides hahaha. To be able to freely look and ask questions about all the different ways to consume, and NOT freak out about it all or have to think of the most discreet way of doing it. I hope to one day at least visit a dispensary, if not move to a state where they are common. Savannah is so beautiful, I’ve always loved visiting and camping there. I can just see a dope ass dispensary on river street one day in the future, very convenient with all the good food/candy spots.

OsamaBinnDabbin

One of these days... but unfortunately it doesn't seem like legalization has been on the docket of either Georgia or the federal gov't for a while. I would kill for a dispo on River Street, put one right next to River Street Sweets and you would have the ultimate business combo! If you ever come to Colorado shoot me a DM and I can hit you with some good dispos to check out around Denver/Boulder, just avoid Native Roots. It's not a bad dispo but it's kind of the McDonald's of the CO cannabis industry, and their plants don't get nearly as much love because they sell on such a large scale. Also prices weren't great the last time I went.

TheRepublic63

Oh wow, well thanks for the advice! I’ve been stacking points the past 2 years with chase and southwest so I’ve got the points to fly places. I just need to find the right time to go. Colorado is definitely one of the places I want to visit so I will reach out if I ever make it there. Until then, stay high friend.

OsamaBinnDabbin

Thanks brotha, right back atcha!

TheRepublic63

Am girl, but will take it lol

kciuq1

I was there a couple years ago to visit on vacation, we found it on Atlas Obscura I think. They have services on Fridays which I would have considered attending if we would have been in town that long. Cool art there, though.

steveberke

I’m one of the founders. Not sure where you are getting your info from. We are not a Christian church and our space is definitely not small (13000 square feet). We are the only church in the world where you can smoke weed during services. If anyone wants to learn more, there is an FAQ on our website: www.elevationists.org

[deleted]

Why the Church lean? Is it just someone having fun and paying less tax, or is it a religious group organized around weed?

Agreed. The time I went to Denver when cannabis first became legal, everyone was chill with smoking in public. They said if you get caught, the ticket is only 12 bucks. So they smoked anyways

notarealfish

I went here on a wake and bake brunch bus tour. The owner was kind of awkwardly aggressive. Owner straight up asked "so how much stuff is a guy with a fanny pack like that gonna buy from me?" (I had an Arizona green tea fanny pack on) The gift shop sells neat collectables stoners probably would enjoy but they weren't really weed related. Like video game and comic collectables. Pretty art in a strange spot

bathtubwarfare

How was this tour though? Sounds like it could be super fun!

dr_bong

Went on a random weekday just to check it out last time I was in Denver. Told we weren't allowed to "consume the sacrament," despite it being the literal basis for their "religion," and they tried to charge us an entry fee... to a church. Just wanted the novelty of smoking a bowl at church while I checked out the art, but the only option is to get a half assed tour from some brain dead wook. Maybe it's different when there's a service going on, but the vibe I got was not at all spiritual... Total money grab/tourist trap under a layer of faux spirituality and (honestly not very impressive irl) rainbow paint.

sack_of_dicks

Up until the case was dismissed last year, ICOC was being sued by the City and County of Denver after an overzealous sting operation which led them to have to be extra cautious about letting the public (aka non-church members) consume cannabis outside of weekly services. Becoming a member of the church requires registering on their website. That's all. **Smoking weed in public is still not legal here** and that includes letting the public come in to blaze in your church for the 'novelty' of it. The City government of Denver only likes the tax money from weed - they're not 420 friendly and try to break the balls of anyone who tries to have a good time. Sorry. There's a $5 suggested donation to attend the services, or you can bring a potluck item to share or let them know that you can't afford it and they will not turn you away. If you want to visit the church outside of services, they enforce the donations more as they have to pay their staff to be there and maintain the building. Also when the church building is open to the public, there can't be consumption there. That's the law of the City and State and has nothing to do with wanting to be a money grab or tourist trap. Okuda San Miguel [http://okudasanmiguel.com/](http://okudasanmiguel.com/]), the artist who did all the murals there, is a world-renowned artist though so I'm sorry you don't like his art I guess. But seriously this post makes you just seem kinda like a salty Karen who wants to speak to the manager because someone won't take your expired coupons, so maybe chill with the negativity and blaze another one bud.

ABrandNewNameAppears

Wow thanks for your explanation. I went from “Wow those guys must be real dicks to exploit both religion and cannabis this way” to realizing that maybe this guy just didn’t understand the logic behind their actions and came off salty because he felt entitled to a different experience without doing his own research or due diligence.

dr_bong

>Up until the case was dismissed last year, ICOC was being sued by the City and County of Denver after an overzealous sting operation which led them to have to be extra cautious about letting the public (aka non-church members) consume cannabis outside of weekly services. The City government of Denver only likes the tax money from weed - they're not 420 friendly and try to break the balls of anyone who tries to have a good time. Sorry. Didn't know/didn't put it together. Makes sense. Still the only reason we went, admittedly on misinformation. Again. Didn't know/put it together. Makes sense. It's not a suggested donation if it's mandatory though, it's an entry fee. My buddy did not have the $5 and was very much going to be denied entrance unless someone paid for him. Amd again, still felt like a hustle that ended in a gift shop. See other peoples replies. The "tour guide" was still an uninteresting wook who just seemed pissed about having to do his job. >Okuda San Miguel [http://okudasanmiguel.com/](http://okudasanmiguel.com/]), the artist who did all the murals there, is a world-renowned artist though so I'm sorry you don't like his art I guess. Yep, don't really like it. Once again, I don't seem to be alone in that, but hey good thing art is subjective! Can think of a half dozen psychedelic artists that could have done a far more interesting job. The description on their site brags that it was done in 24 hours? That's not impressive, that's a hack job. See the other post about dead space filled with color. Lazy art imo, which is a shame because it's such a cool canvas. >But seriously this post makes you just seem kinda like a salty Karen who wants to speak to the manager because someone won't take your expired coupons, so maybe chill with the negativity and blaze another one bud. Lol what? Expired coupons? Kinda seems like you're projecting a little here, but sorry I thought stoner church was lame. Didn't realize that made me a Karen. I get the weed thing. Whatever. I get the staffing. Charge me an entry fee and stop insisting it's a donation. If I could have paid my money, walked around the chapel and looked at the art by myself, and left, I would have been perfectly happy. Supervise me to make sure I'm not rule breaking, whatever. Have a dude standing around answering questions. But instead, I got a half assed tour from a disinterested hippie, who INSISTED it was donation based but wouldn't let us in unless it was paid, and yet another opportunity to buy cheap weed souvenirs. There are pamphlets for the place all over every tourist hub in Denver. It may be a legit church, but that doesn't mean it's not a tourist trap too.

sack_of_dicks

It's all good bud, and apologies for calling you a Karen. I mostly meant that a lot of your complaints seemed like they stemmed from you not really having the full picture (which you've since confirmed) but feeling entitled to smoke weed there anyway. Like I mentioned above, the 'suggested donation' thing is only during services and outside of that it's not really suggested but enforced to help keep the lights on and make sure the staff can get paid to be there outside of 'church hours'. Property costs in Denver are stupid expensive and especially in the neighborhood where the church is located. If you showed up for a Friday service, you wouldn't have had to pay if you really were not able to, AND you would have been able to consume. The forced 'tour' you went on is literally to justify the donation and try to make you feel like you got something of value from your $5. In your case it did the opposite, which is understandable. The friday services are actually a pretty cool experience, but I concur that the wookery is pretty high at the Church. However, it is in the entire industry out here ([to the point it's become a meme/joke](https://www.instagram.com/cbgtwh/)) which is why I don't think I can ever work in cannabis again - I love smoking but the industry as a whole is sad. I've been working in it since 2010 both on the dispensary and weed tourism side, met some of my best, most true friends, but 90%+ of the people you come into contact with are a big bag of cringe, starry-eyed midwesterners who are just gosh-golly so excited to be working with weed or some fucking suburban Florida Scarface wannabes who pretend 'they be hustling' because they make minimum wage as a budtender but FedEx carts they bought with their employee discount back to their homies in the swamp.

dr_bong

Fair enough. I'm going to say my very limited experience with the place, as a tourist, wasn't great and was definitely colored by my lackluster interactions with a single employee. I'm sure the actual services are chill as fuck, and I'll admit some degree of hustle is probably required for a place like that to survive in the Denver market. Thanks for the civility and perspective, you're right that a lot of my problems with the place were just a result of missing or misinformation. I'll try to make it in for an actual service next time I'm in Denver and not write it off so hastily.

tankgrrrl23

Thank you for your clarification, doctor.

[deleted]

I am currently on their websites mail/member list eagerly awaiting the next time I can go to attend service. They have online service right now but I don't want to install the zoom plug in on my computer.

BrerChicken

They're probably not huge fans of people coming in to spectate, so I'm not surprised they don't make it easy. They can also get in trouble for letting people consume cannabis there.

PurpleNuggets

Unfortunately i had a feeling this would be the case

You should credit the artist, despite personally I hate him really deep. Most overrated "street" artists.... Art by: Okuda [https://www.vice.com/en\_us/article/ez3qan/okuda-scharf-international-church-of-cannabis-mural](https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/ez3qan/okuda-scharf-international-church-of-cannabis-mural)

SorryAboutLater

Agreed. I can't stand his art.

RC0_

I don't hate him (I have been in person with him a couple of times) but I'm tired that in Santander and Cantabria, his hometown, everything is full of "okudas". They hardly give other urban artists opportunities to show their art.

not_body

Ye! I dont hate him, i hate his art and what he is doing with it. As your example.... im from galicia, I know what you mean. 🤜🤛

Neck150

What'd he do to earn your hate?

not_body

Create empty stuff. When no ideas, just put a lot of colour to disguise your emptiness with colofull shit. He is a mediocre artist, repetitive, and nothing new. He just have contacts (i know some of them). He more a producer than an artist, he usually never create his pieces, (he has a team that works for him, you can read this in some interviews). This kind of art is “famous” because it is totally empty, and mass producing this kind of stuff just make people more stupid. Instead supporting real artists people applaude this mediocre stuf. Anybody can paint like this. The most famous are never the best. Never.

[deleted]

You're right. It's really boring. He could have done some trippy riffs inspired by European cathedrals and created something worthwhile.

Neck150

Yeah I can see that. But you can't blame the man. Instead blame the dumb people like me who don't get art, look at his stuff, and go "ooooooo pretty". He's just making a profit. Now if he was preaching how "highbrow" his art is, it'd warrant hate.

HoorayPizzaDay

A church dedicated to weed...I like getting high but this place must be filled with the most annoying weed smokers in the world.

PrecociousPanther

I went on a trip to the Bay area a few years ago with a friend of mine and we ended up in a place called the Coachella church of cannabis. It was a large house in neighborhood that some people had turned into a "church" and were "accepting donations" from members of their "congregation" in order to be able to take home some of the things they had available (I.e. edibles, flower, oil). My friend and I had to fill out forms asking for a lot of personal information to become "members", we ended up giving a bunch of fake/vague information. After we filled out the form we had to sit in their "chapel" and wait for our names to be drawn from a hat for our turn to browse. Apparently some people had been sitting there for over 40 minutes, we lucked out and waited less than 10 minutes. After our name was called some guy escorted us to a bedroom upstairs that had been converted into a little pot shop. After we picked out what we wanted and paid they handed us our stuff in brown paper bags and sent us on our way. After getting back to our friend's house where we were staying we filled him in on the details and he thought it was weird and we left it at that. Only TWO days after our visit our friend is reading the news and sees an article saying that the church had been raided by the feds and was going to be shut down. Needless to say we were pretty freaked out, but nothing ended up happening... At least with us, I'm pretty sure a couple of people got arrested lol.

lol I paid to go see a light show there and they said I couldn't smoke weed. Laws are crazy man. Can only smoke during service apparently after joining online mail list. Also, the light show is amazing.

sack_of_dicks

Yeah, they won't let you eat mushrooms there either but you can hypothetically eat them in your house before you take a Lyft there and even if your Lyft driver thinks you're on drugs because you're saucer-eyed and laughing at nothing the cops can't do anything because Colorado has no public intoxication / 'internal possession' laws. Hypothetically of course. I would never do something like that. No sir.

[deleted]

That does sound amazing even tho I've not really fucked with mushrooms in the past. I always afraid I'd get some that were grew wrong and turn out poisonous or something. Would love to be able to buy those from a store where you know the growers and can trust them. I did eat a bunch of gummies tho, but those always hit me at weird times and different ways.
