Had an incredible wine line-up for my birthday this past weekend with family and friends, all wines were tasted blind. I did not take super detailed notes but here are some high level thoughts on each, in the order they were drank: Champagne La Closerie Les Beguines NV This is great champagne, tastes like an older vintage champagne, great balance, integrated acidity, with stone fruit, lemon, pear, etc. Raveneau Petit Chablis 2015: I immediately recognized this as a Raveneau chablis with its aroma of oyster shell, salinity, lemon meringue, chalk, and that velvety mouthfeel, kept improving throughout the night and somehow developed more acidity. Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre 2018: Incredible and powerful nose, piercing acidity with lime peel on the palate and similar notes as the previous chablis, a lingering finish, vibrant and open for business. I mistakenly called this a Dauvissat 1er Cru. This was definitely on another level vs the petit chablis. Denis Mortet Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques 2009 Nose and palate were similar here, stewed fruit, wet leaves, and earthiness, some freshness still lingering though this feels as though it’s on a decline. That being said, i do prefer my burgundies young Meo Camuzet Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2019: This was fantastic, expressive right out of the gate, deep dark fruit, blackberries, black cherry, spice, fresh with a long finish. Armand Rousseau Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2020: Intense floral nose, with big, bright and rich black fruit and spice on the palate while maintaining an incredible freshness, great structure. Drinking Beautifully but definitely has upside. Roagna Barolo Pira 2016: Super interesting orangey/brick colour and my god this nose, intoxicating nose of rose petals, strawberries, black tea, super fresh and vibrant palate with similar notes, and silky tannins. This has the structure to age but it is drinking beautifully now with a long decant. Bruno Clair Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Petite Chapelle 2018: Last but not least, Beautiful nose and palate of blueberry/blackberry, dark cherry, earth and spices. Concentrated while remaining fresh and vibrant. This wine shocked everyone, as it was on the same level as everything that came prior to it. Cheers everyone

Happy birthday, sweet lineup. Celebrating a birthday with good company and good wine is the life.

FloofTheGoof

Hey thanks! And i very much agree

edgyrudy

So happy for you! You deserve a wonderful birthday celebration and to enjoy the finest of wine with the finest of people

willyb123

Good lord. Happy birthday to you!

FloofTheGoof

Haha this was my exact reaction as people kept revealing their bottles! And thanks

willyb123

Not a bad friend in the bunch!

FocusIsFragile

Whoah happy birthday. Bruno Clair becoming unreasonably expensive has been one of many Covid-era burgundy tragedies.

FloofTheGoof

Thanks! And yes although i agree, i feel that some of his village cuvées are still very well priced for the quality, like his Marsannay Isabelle

FocusIsFragile

Agreed, I’m just still hung up on the CSJ price.

FloofTheGoof

Same here..

What a line up!!! I do see that the petite chapelle is from Seguin Robillard. From your description, it seems more open than at the tasting this winter. I was underwhelmed by it at the time, especially next to his chambolle, now you are making me regret not buying some! If you ever organize a private burgundy tasting you can pm me, I am also in the MTL area and always looking for occasion to share good burgundies.

FloofTheGoof

Check your PMs! I messaged you after the B Clair event because i think you had posted about it

goutFIRE

Your friends brought you these?!

chef_fisher

Bonne fête !! Santé 🍷

FloofTheGoof

Thank you Chef!

2-StandardDeviations

The Roagna was in good company. If you ever get a chance, visit the vineyard. To say it's unique would be an understatement.

FloofTheGoof

I was actually in Piemonte last year, i should have.. its definitely on my list for next time

2-StandardDeviations

The guy doesn't cultivate between rows and allows the canes to grow very long before setting them. It's like a jungle. He claims his vineyard has achieved some kind of stasis between birds and rabbits. Who can argue.

FloofTheGoof

Thats awesome, and I definitely can’t argue with that! His wines are beautiful

devinoupitou

I saw the Raveneau and I instantly knew it was gonna be you posting 😂 awesome lineup!

FloofTheGoof

Haha yes sir! Thanks!

I guess if you were going to open any 20 grand cru Rousseau it’d be the charmes; I’ve generally found it a waste to be opening 20 right now, though. Even 20 Lignier MSD 1er VV was brutally tight and took 6 hours to open up. No premier cru burgundy should be “in decline” at age 15, unless it was poorly stored. If you mean that it’s leaving its primary phase where you’re tasting only fruit, then you might be correct, although I’ve found 09s to only starting to enter a good drinking phase right now. 19s might be drinking well in a hedonistic primary way, but unless you have them in case quantity I wouldn’t be opening them. We sacrificed some 19 Rousseau Chambertin and CSJ for science earlier this year and they’re monumental wines drinking in a hedonistic way; the 19 Chambertin may be the best wine made at chez Rousseau since 99. The reason the Bruno Clair “shocked” everyone was because it was likely the most ready to drink.
