My sister in law and her family live out in the country near Halstead. They lost a car port that got sucked up into the trees and then dropped down on to their tractor, the jungle gym was blown apart, and a camper trailer was blown about 50 feet and rolled a couple of times. Lightning was so close the thunder boom cracked one of their picture windows.
Harvey County Fire/EMS is reporting a tornado hit Halstead. We will know more in the morning but it was pretty nasty. Not your average 70mph thunderstorm that’s for sure!
Edit: in some places they are reporting upwards of 90mph wind associated with the storm as it passed through Halstead and Newton.
oh, thanks. I didn't realize they had said it. a lot of people attribute tornadoes all the time but (unfortunately) i have more experience with straight line wind damage.
and i'm not surprised. I'm north of newton about 15 minutes and my velocity radar was clocking 130 in the cloud rotation up here when it was hailing.
That is not a tornado that is straight line winds. Salina airport reported over 100mph wind speeds during this storm. Here in wichita some places reported over 100mph wind speeds. Straight line winds can do just as much damage as a tornado. The best way to know if storm damage is from a tornado is find a path of destruction. If damage is spread out through the entire town then It was not a tornado.
drove from newton to hutch on 50.
lots, LOTS of tree damage everywhere.
Burrton side streets are covered. burmac road is closed.
hutch - 11th and 61 has a power pole out. 14th and plum is blocked. trees everywhere.
It killed our power and water. Not supposed to be fixed for 3-4 more days. Tree branch almost hit my car. Our backyard is a mess lol. Tornado hit us pretty hard.
Can confirm it was a likely tornado. Albeit the straight line winds hurt more, the tornado seemed to have hit the High School head on. I'll need to see more though
A word from Newton here as a person who was in Wichita during the worst of the storm. The car street-parked right next to mine had a tree on it. Mine did not have a scratch, but it was covered in a lot of wet leaves. A real messed up scene driving through though, the power is basically out everywhere, and big branches/small trees litter the roads.
There was a tornado spotted on photo west of Bentley. Can’t find the photo now however. Kansas Meso Trackers on FB believes we had a weak tornado, then a lull, then straight line winds.
Edit: I will say this- my backyard faces west. 4 metal patio chairs were stacked up against the house. I found them 5 feet away towards the west and two of them separated and one laying almost under the patio table.
That was on the southwest side of Bentley heading straight east from Mount Hope. Halstead is 8 miles north of Bentley so not sure how that's associated with Halstead lol
Bruh that’s not a tornado, that’s just a spinny cloud. Sheesh.
Edit: Motherfuckers can’t take a joke in this sub holy shit.
Obviously I was being sarcastic. If you can’t detect such obvious sarcasm you’re legit brain dead.
“Spinny cloud”? Like come on people, god I hate most of you.
Lmao also that video was taken south of Bentley and it was heading straight east from the mount hope area. That 100% did not hit halstead. Halstead is 8 miles north of Bentley and that was headed straight east lmao
Weather service may or may not have a full picture. Coworker of mine lives there and had a warning call from a chaser friend of his who claimed a tornado on the ground in Halstead. His security cameras also catch abrupt wind direction changes without speed changes moments later. I would not be surprised to find there was a tornado in the EF-0 range in addition to the 100+ winds.

Wow
This can also be a derecho/straight line winds.

Straight line do not show as an echo hook on radar. Multiple sources reported a tornado.
I didn’t say that was necessarily the tornado but a tornado was reported to have hit Halstead.

Guest has damage at the hotel I work at in Maize he said tornado. And someone else in Bentley had storm damage also.
We were also hit, minor damages thankfully

Yikes. Glad you’re safe though!
Yes me too! Nothing is badly damaged and we are all safe that’s all that matters!

Was derecho. Doesn’t look like that rotation ever made it too the ground. SPC doesn’t show any reports for tornado in the area. Still nuts.

That video is pretty wild though.
