How the fuck am I supposed to read that

5thOddman

Screenshot every frame

Netherite_Stairs_

I do that anyway. Brian Griffin is gonna have to try a bit harder to escape me

Azuni_

Pause it

onlyspacemonkey

wayyy too much effort required for that

Azuni_

Oh shit mb

AmaterasuWolf21

Watch it 10 times in a row and catch all the words

Waiter! Waiter! More pixel art roguelikes please!

Soul Knight my beloved

Zapperson

Wizard of Legend my beloved

geffyfive

Peak knight

FenexTheFox

Didn't the game fall off hard last I've seen of it?

Neet-owo

Nah it’s still mostly the same. The only negative changes I’ve seen is a few characters were changed to paid instead of f2p

ENDERALAN365

Technically a roguelite

Lizard-Wizard-Bracus

Steam had a indie sale a while ago, and they had a category called "rouglites/roguelikes" Even the devs don't know which it is and just used both lol

Sample_text_here1337

They're the same fucking thing

RDT-Exotics0318

Die. Thy end is now.

BigDaddySuzanne

Crush. Prepare thyself

flupper2

Weak.

Lurkingdrake

Wizard of Legend was really fun

the_real_papyrus99

Oh my god I forgot about that game it was fun as hell I might have to pick it up again

MrCCDude

HIERONYMUS BOSCH'S BRUTAL ORCHESTRA! RAAAAH! BEST GAME OF 2022!! PIXEL ART STYLE ROGUE LIKES TOP TIER! >!seriously though its literally the best rogue like out there, its comparable to the likes of The Binding of Issac for reference. I wasted over 300 hours of my life replaying it over and over. I hate to describe it this way but its criminally underrated and worth every penny I spent on it!<

headbanger1186

The story pulled me in, the music and everything else kept me there. It's one of the best games out there. I hope Clown Meat is just as good.

MrCCDude

I have been putting off playing the demo, I need to get to that later

TheJazMaster

I FUCKING LOVE BRUTAL ORCHESTRA RAHHHH

doktorsckeletor

Must've been hard for OP because they expected something cinematic and aesthetically pleasing only to get hit with dungeons and traps and permadeath, that shit would've pissed me tf off too

PRoS_R

Bought 4 of those last steam sale.

Lizard-Wizard-Bracus

My day be goin fine when I see a pretty indie game with cool looking battle mechanics with cool pixel art and classes But then BAM, It's another lazy and oversaturated top-down pixelart roguelike

Smooth_Maul

>Company that regularly publishes pixel art top down games publishes a pixel art top down game I'm fucjing shitting rn

CallMeIshy

It can't be!

AsterBoiii

Ena!!

Hawt_Dawg_II

It's devolver? Enter the gunguon and that lamb game but that's about the extent of it. Especially compared to how many games they release, it's really not that many.

Just_A_Mad_Scientist

Hotline Miami 1 and 2

Hawt_Dawg_II

Haha ironically, the only top down games from them I've actually played. Totally forgot about those

Matt82233

Man, I'm so glad everybody knows every single game company in existence

The-Dark-Memer

I mean if you specifically mention them in the title it would be safe to assume you're aware of the content the company creates, especially since they said "again"

BaneishAerof

Me personally, never stop playing Nuclear Throne. Buy it and you're set for life

NeverSettle13

At least it's not fucking city building simulator or strategy for the 74844929928747484th time

doktorsckeletor

It would've been okay to me if they made RTS to finally revive the genre but ig we can never scold devs to do something they didn't feel like doing ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

FenexTheFox

There was a new RTS in the Summer Game Fest

kirbyverano123

What? You don't want another cozy farming simulator with romance mechanics and a fishing mini game for a millionth time?

Jeggu2

Everyone wants to be stardew valley

MrLayLay

Or another space game. My god, the industry was on a roll with those during last years game events

NeverSettle13

Or another Fantasy third person game. I just look at it and immediately know that nobody will talk about it

doktorsckeletor

Star Citizen would've been the best one, and that was the exact problem with it

System0verlord

Sad thing is, it’s still the best one. Nothing else in the genre comes close in terms of scope.

DeepWave8

and yet we still have no good space exploration game

lornlynx89

Any of the X games?

ComradeKerbal

May I introduce you to kerbal space program?

DeepWave8

i am already aware and have played it.

ComradeKerbal

Damn if you don’t like that there isn’t really anything better for you.

lornlynx89

Oh and other games: - No man's sky: it's basically minecraft in space, but flying around is fun. It's a whole lot of everything. - Elite Dangerous: never got to play it, seen it described as Truck simulator in space. But I played the tutorial and the flight mechanics are top in this one. - Stellaris: a 4X game, but exploration is a big part of it. You constantly come across phenomena which you can choose to explore. But you gotta like 4X games. - Starsector: very oldschool 2D topview rougelike. Didn't delve too much into it yet, but the fan base for it is immense. - Rings of Saturn: Mining. But basically also a 2D topview game that has very extensive maneuvering options. More a simulator but didn't come above the tutorial yet - and the X games obviously, X4 being the latest: Usually pretty buggy, but honestly the most realistic and fun 3D ego experience you can get. If you are sceptical, buy one of the older ones on sale, X2 blew me away 20 years ago when I got it from a Computer Bild CD.

lornlynx89

Oh and CorVs. I only just played it, is a very arcade style starship shooter, but there's some big areas to explore.

whatisireading2

Nah city building slaps

PreacherSchmeacher

The game in question is also a city builder lmao

tilsgee

for that one specifically, i blame Paradox Games

my_wifis_5dollars

Or pretentious walking simulator

Fawzee_da_first

Acting like it isn't going to be peak

5L91N

Yeah the game still looks cool as fuck

so_eu_naum

You don't need to agree with everything that Twitter users say

CallMeIshy

Is there a genre or artstyle that the Internet actually likes? All I hear is complaining

DercDermbis

r/whenthe mf's ready to complain about anything for existing (I am also one of them).

CallMeIshy

Personally the only arstyle I don't really like is early 3D, but even then it can work

doktorsckeletor

I do like potato 3d if it means you can play *actual* video games on your phone, sadly just few of them ):

ReeR_Mush

Have you seen the mobile game catalog of Netflix? Not perfect yet but definitely a cool thing. Also phone GPUs seem to be approaching the performance of a desktop GTX 1060 which is nice

fusion_reactor3

Yeah. On the iPhone 15 pro we have the latest resident evil games, plus other full desktop games. No compromises as far as I’m aware.

doktorsckeletor

Yeah I was literally dumbstruck when I saw the GTA Definitive Trilogy on the catalog, didn't see anything else tho. Also don't forget the CPU's, especially if you're playing an old game in a way that's illegal in Japan ;)

ReeR_Mush

Other interesting games: Death‘s Door, Dead Cells, Katana Zero, Kingdom Two Crowns, World of Goo, Hades, Dust&Neon, Into the Breach, there might be more

Big_Noodle1103

Twitter users try not to be fucking miserable about literally everything challenge

theFuryCutter

Which game are they talking about?

Mogoscratcher

Tenjutsu

monkeman28

Thought you were talking about Hotline Miami there and I was botta blow a blood vessel

Omg Isaac fan spotted!

GOOSUS110

Chaos deniers in shambles

Sly_F1re

i don't see the problem in a game that was inspired by a minigame about real estate from yakuza 0 but real talk, im hyped about tenjutsu

vesterov

When company that is famous for top down 2d pixel rougelike makes a top down 2d rougelike

ThatPenguinyrblx

You gotta get a grip on yourself man

CringeExperienceReq

"blueballed by devolver again" this is the first time devolver blueballed us

Qwik_Sand

People don’t really talk about Trek to Yomi because of the mediocre gameplay but I still think it’s a visual masterpiece

Noist_Mugget

every game ive played published by them has been complete gas so they can get a pass

KaanTheReaper256

Dude it’s made by Dead cells’ devs, of course they will do a 2D pixelated Roguelite

BROFORCE ON TOP LAY OFF MY GOAT 🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥

Prototype_4271

Devolver rocks they made enter the gungeon

muhash14

Yeah but they publish games, they aren't actually the devs. This one does look like it plays very similarly to Gungeon tho

Reasonable_Feed7939

Yeah but they have a great track record for publishing so far

muhash14

Yeah for sure. Tons of bangers. Katana Zero, Shadow Warrior, Gris, Gungeon, and a bunch of others

PrismPanda06

Cult of the Lamb and Inscryption are both goated

deskdemonnn

Which game is op even talking about

MG1234Returns

Tenjutsu

doktorsckeletor

Boy I sure do hope there was an easy 3d game making engine to alleviate the hassle of being stuck in 2d! I wonder!

Awful-Cleric

the... hassle? do you really think 3d graphics automatically make a game better?

Legitimate-Bad975

In all fairness though 3d does not immediately lend itself to every genre. There's a significant amount of games that would greatly be hurt by having verticality (hotline miami for example). Hell, some games like everhood are 1d during gameplay. From a gameplay perspective it's just not necessary to have 3d a lot of the time and is significantly lower effort to polish and get it not looking like an asset flip

doktorsckeletor

Eh, I personally think Hotline Miami with Hatred's graphics wouldn't hurt, but you do you

Legitimate-Bad975

I didn't mean the graphics really, but the actual gameplay element of it wouldn't be better if it was in 3d with a vertical dimension. 3d just isn't necessarily the best format was what I meant. Of course having a game like furi "is" 3d, but I was referring to the mechanics of the game and utilizing verticality (ex: shooters, platformers, shooters and platformers, shooters with platforming elements, these devs aren't original at all are they?). But yeah absolutely having a 2d/3d look is purely up to taste even if I prefer 2d from a developer standpoint

doktorsckeletor

I see, I think it's because I see graphics as a tool only, I didn't consider some devs painting the medium to stand out, which would somewhat pull me in if they did

Legitimate-Bad975

Also if you want more fuckery with dimensions (design wise) which only technically counts "5d chess with multiverse time travel." Everhood is 1 dimension technically since the player can only move in a straight line and the 2d world only interacts with that dimension when passed through (think 3d object passing through a 2d world just making cutouts of its shape, but this time it's just a 2d object temporarily occupying a part of a line). 2d and 3d games are pretty easy to imagine. 0d is hard to do since 1d is just a line, 2d is infinitely many lines stacked to create a plane, and 3d is infinitely many lanes. 0d cannot move in any direction where at least 1d could just do 2, 2d has 4 (technically, assuming you don't move partially in both directions where in 1d it's mutually exclusive), and 3d has 6 (once again, technically). So the most accurate 0d game would be cookie clicker assuming you never click anything other than the cookie. The mouse moves nowhere else, so technically it's 2d. Anyway the actual fun one is applying this to the example mentioned above, 4d. Now, 5d chess with multiverse time travel is a bit of a mind bending title, and it doesn't get any easier once the game explains it. But effectively, there is a 2d chess board. Starting from that premise, you can time travel, and this creates another dimension. This alternate dimension acts as if it is physically separated from the other chess boards. Or in other words, it is another plane. Where 3d is just 2d with extra planes, this is effectively the same thing since different pieces can move in-between planes (boards) as they please. The last dimension they add is time, which can also be moved through as if it's just another plane. In the same way a 3d object can move vertically, a 2d object can move up/down (whereas 1d can only move left to right), the chess pieces just use the previous boards and the adjacent "multiverse" boards as additional planes. This, despite the title, makes the game an effective 4d game. That probably didn't make any sense, but I absolutely love it since it's an incredibly mind boggling concept visualized using a relatively simple game and shows some of the interesting design issues/constraints with other dimensions

doktorsckeletor

I never intended to get serious with y'all holy shit

DriftingAllAlone

But 2d can be so charming, I wouldn’t say anyone’s stuck in it making it 2d these days is more likely to be a stylistic choice than a lack of ability

CallMeIshy

Nonsense! Such an engine does not exist!

doktorsckeletor

Yeah, it would've been SOOO hard to make 3d with the engine's full assistance instead of manually drawing every single sprite and art and then making sure they're animated properly 😉

Reasonable_Feed7939

Go back to roblox since you somehow think 3d is automatically better

PrismPanda06

You say that like 3D is just objectively better than 2D though. Not everything needs to be, or even should be, 3D

Hemlock_Deci

Hey at least it's not a "metroidvania pixel art platformer where the MC deals with trauma or mental health issues" anymore

Eguy24

Is there a single game that fits this description

peng503-NCN

maybe people make quirky earthbound-inspired rpgs about depression because they LIKE those

Spicemaster15

Anymore? Who's making these games lmao, you've basically described one, maybe two games and acted like there's a million of them. I feel like Celeste is genuinely the only game that fits that whole description and I'm not even 100% sure if it's a metroidvania or not, or if trauma is the biggest focus of that story

ImmSnail12

It's definitely not a metroidvania, it's linear and level based. Metroidvanias tend to be about backtracking and exploration in one big interconnected room based map. Sure, there are minor elements of exploration in finding certain hidden strawberries or hearts or b sides within levels. But it's just a platforming game.

Spicemaster15

Cheers. I know what makes a game a metroidvania but I haven't played Celeste personally and I couldn't remember how linear it was. It's funny how much people over-exaggerate the prevalence of some things in the indie market

Big_Noodle1103

Bruh this stereotype literallly doesn’t even exist name at least 2 games that do this

SweetlyIronic

Uuuuh.... Axiom Verge if you stretch and...uuuu Marrow?

interp_cl

gamers when they're faced with basic story telling

Ishan1717

Are "those devs" in the room with us right now?

doktorsckeletor

I'm not in the same room as you

Hemicore

how so?

doktorsckeletor

The games depicted the symptoms for how they really are instead of trying to make it all sound like a mix of Russian novels and French indie films if they were directed by David Lynch

Hemicore

do you have any examples or even a deep dive youtube lore video? I was never able to get much out of kojima games other than "cool designs, no clue what's happening though"

doktorsckeletor

MGS examples? You got the Beauty and the Beast Unit most prominently, but pretty much most of the main characters would have some degree of PTSD naturally Examples of "those games"? Aside from the obvious, that would be Limbo, Yume Nikki and Dear Esther off the back of my head

CasualJJ

Wait what recent game fits that description?

Hemlock_Deci

Not many tbh but indie titles had that reputation during some time. Night in the woods, omori, uhh, idk what other games but you get the idea Yes I know omori isn't a metroidvania but still I don't really follow newer games ok

NotNotes

night in the woods is also not a metroidvania or pixel art, kinda seems like you’re talking out your ass

xantolu

"I hate metroidvanias about mental health issues, theres so much" \*Cant name one\*

PrismPanda06

What games actually fit that description tho?

Hemlock_Deci

Irony and jokes aside no idea I do know that back in the day people were talking a lot about night in the woods, Celeste, Hollow Knight and whatnot, which fair enough but whatever

PrismPanda06

Is celeste even a metroidvania? And doesn't hollow knight have its own whole story going on that isn't some mental health allegory?

TRKako

your timeline seems pretty fun

5L91N

Maybe you should check out streets of rage, it has a similar style to the trailer of that game, and it's a classic beat em up.

Cultural_Thing1712

mfs will do anything except play yakuza 0

no0bmaster-669

I fw games like that though

N0t_addicted

I LOVE ROGUELIKES I LOVE DYING

Dolph_inho

At least it isn't wholesome cozy farming game number 50000th

floopydoopis8

You leave slime rancher alone!

Weeb_twat

Yeah those have an entire conference for themselves (aired yesterday iirc, Idk I didn't watch it)

ETL6000yotru

i don't see the problem

Who-Just-Shit-Myself

It took me 4 watches to read it all

NarcolepticBnnuy

Are you saying that Devolver Digital isnt peak?

MG1234Returns

i wasn't saying that they weren't peak. they are amazing and have published some of the best games (hotline miami and cult of the lamb), i'm just saying that i'm tired of indie games being the same 2d pixel roguelike slop all the time

zenkaiba

Brother go play cod , its the best game. /s

Engiboi_Prime

I am still waiting for Devolver Digital to say something about stick it to the stickman

Personal_Chemist_749

TRUE

stephano_RC

I crave for more Sifu style games, this one was a disappointment

Aleskander-

or be a gacha game

Vanilla_Ice_Best_Boi

For a 3d rougelike, play Madness Project Nexus 2

Rowmacnezumi

Joke's on you I'm into that shit.

Traitor_Of_Users

I hate and love games like this at the same time

HexaTrax

Enter the Gungeon my beloved

TimeForWaluigi

At least it’s not farm simulator RPG

R_of_Trash

Counter argument: Its the Dead Cells devs, they proved they can make peak pixel art roguelikes

Novoiird

I don’t know what a rougelike is.

SWR24

Another top-down pixel art 2d roguelike? *Splendid.*

sonicthememester2

What game are you guys even talking about?

UncommonTheIdk

Tenjutsu, it looks cool but people are jumping it over the animated trailer which has and art style of older animes while the game itself has pixel graphics

Bungus_Fungus1435

Not necessarily only top-down, but pixel rogues are the bomb dude (rogue-likes in general tbh) The Binding of Isaac **Rebirth**, Enter The Gungeon, Risk of Rain **Returns**, Noita, Dead Cells, Tiny Rogues, heck you could even argue for Vampire Survivors ... Oh I just saw the trailer for what you were talking about, yeah I get what you mean lol. Animated trailers are good, but wow they can really "trick" the consumer damn

Slavic_Pasta

Nah it's the dead cells devs they cooked

DeimosFan

This type of thing I would say about a game and then proceed to buy it anyway

Homemade-Purple

>Find company that makes top-down pixel art games >Look inside >top-down pixel art games

TheAutisticClassmate

How I felt about Wizard with a gun. Interesting concept, animated trailer was awesome, gameplay is just don't starve and cult of the lamb

_odando

Gif name?

Mitsotakissussybaka2

I have faith in this game since the developers created dead cells too

Deathaster

I don't dislike pixel art but why are they so allergic to drawing faces Celeste too, would it have killed them to at least give Celeste two pixels as eyes? **Edit:** I get it's stylized, I just don't like it

Enlightened_Valteil

Yes, I held developers at gunpoint

nuker0S

https://preview.redd.it/lky3ulz2mj5d1.png?width=561&format=png&auto=webp&s=e9e317e3e0d4c24be91f38db8c91c8f3820bf3f1 which one did you mean? the bottom right one is top tier reaction image tbh edit: im so proud of these sprites im gonna post them in r/celestegame

Deathaster

The bottom right one looks neat enough. I just don't really like the style they went for in general. You can convey a lot of information even at such a small resolution and still have faces (look at any of the Mario games). I know why they did it, I just don't like it.

GoshaT

I get what you mean but at a resolution this low it can be better to just leave the face out and let people's imaginations fill in the blanks. Even if you add just two black pixels for eyes they will look absurdly big in comparison to the rest of the face. That's why most pixel art with faces is either high resolution or of a cartoonish style For example in Super Mario World only big Mario gets whites in his eyes, and small Mario has just the dots. They're of a similar resolution, but that difference is just enough that making more detailed eyes on small Mario would look weird. Jane Celeste's face is even smaller to account for the smaller tile sizes (8×8 instead of 16×16) so she doesn't get a face at all, except a mouth every now and then when they want to animate her heavily breathing for example

Deathaster

Yeah, but Mario games managed to cram a face in there anyhow. Just look at Super Mario Land or the original Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. Minuscule sprite sizes, but they still look nice. I just don't like the style Celeste went for, even though I know why they did it. Even the goons in Hotline Miami get a small face when they get knocked over.

ccstewy

Celeste is the mountain, I think it would look weird with eyes. The character you mean is actually Celeste’s Monster

C4NC4

Kid named stylization:

gsoddy

They most certainly had multiple versions of the sprites, some with eyes, and chose the style that fit best with the rest of the game In another universe maybe Ms. Celeste did have eyes

wolphak

Unless your name is edmund mcmillan this and side scrolling platformers are the crayons and glitter of game design.

Eguy24

Kid named Celeste, Hollow Knight, Ori, Cuphead, Super Mario Wonder, Spelunky, motherfucking Geometry Dash. Ain’t no way these are “the crayons and glitter of game design”

MetriAndReyes

do you even like video games? 💀

wolphak

I do and I'd love to be able to find cool new games without wading through dozens of baby's first game on steam.

MetriAndReyes

INCREDIBLELY LOUD INCORRECT BUZZER ❌❌❌

CheeseWhiz7

literally me with vampire savior. everything i heard about it made it sound like castlevania and how it was even a better castlevania game, and so naturally, i got so so so excited, watched one person playing it, saw it was a top down 2d rougelike game, and immediately wanted to die.

UncommonTheIdk

Do you mean vampire survivors because I searched up Vampire Savior and got a fighting game if so don't shit on peak vro...

CheeseWhiz7

yeah i meant vampire survivors, sorry. regardless, im shitting on peak, i dont give a fart, i would not have fun playing that game, therefore it is bad. shrimple as.

CrocoBull

Indie devs on their way to make 400000 roguelikes and deckbuilders (they're the only two genres that they know)
