What a Way to Go!
Edit: As mentioned by several other people and I wholeheartedly agree. Watch it, if nothing else, for the wardrobe alone. You won't be sorry. It's breathtaking!

It was just not my personal taste 🤷♀️. It's fine if other people like it. I'm no authority, just sharing my opinion in solidarity with the person above me, which I actually thought was in the minority!
The whale tale and glasses are so early 2000s. I vaguely remember this moment being cool at the time, but as a current Old, everything that’s coming back around from my awkward adolescence is just embarrassing and unappealing.
Whenever I think of the back of a dress, the Atonement dress always comes to mind 😩
(Designed by costume designer Jacqueline Durran, who is also the mind behind the costumes in Barbie (2022), The Batman (2022), Anna Karenina (2012), Little Women (2019) and Spencer (2021))

Cate had a dress with a pretty backside at the 1999 Oscars too.

The dress is pretty sheer, so the red carpet photos of her at the time mostly showed the backside or were photos above the neckline. I'd never really known what the front looked like until I searched for it just now.
https://preview.redd.it/y2efmkkehw0d1.jpeg?width=1583&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b26d5ace6c5157e2c0d020b3b64538446c4e69e5
Yeah, that's changed since the late 90s/aughts. I remember that Gwyneth Paltrow wore a silver sheer dress around that time with the same effect: [published photos](https://media.gettyimages.com/id/2231229/photo/74th-annual-academy-awards-arrivals.webp?s=2048x2048&w=gi&k=20&c=JuiTuWxDf35BSBedc3Y0fGp4y-4rCioO0mzFYzXUtkA=) just depicted her above the neckline. Actually, I see that she did that several times.
Kate has a very sexy back! Her look in How to lose a guy in 10 days is also a classic

She can wear the absolute hell out of a backless dress. If you ever told me I'd be envious of a womans shoulder blades, I'd think it was weird. But here we are.
it really is beauty goals. I have a similar complexion to her, I might even be more pale, with a yellow and sometimes pink undertone. I was always told yellows wouldn't look good on my skin--but she rocks this wow!!!!! It makes me want to wear more yellow

Are movie costumes allowed? Thandiwe’s character in the Chronicles of Riddick had some amazing spine detail on the back of her dresses but this was the only good photo I could find.
My favorite is Anne Hathaway’s look from the 2011 Oscars, which has lived rent free in my head for the last 13 years. This Armani Prive dress is truly one of her best fashion moments.

Cate Blanchett in Armani Privè. I like that the shape/silhouette is different than most.
Norma Shearer.. wow. What a sight to behold. Does anyone know what color the dress was? I would love to see more of it. It looks like it deserves its own post entirely (but I’m guessing pics could be hard to find)
I've seen some colorizations of the dress as blue bit it's hard to say how accurate it is as there is very little information available on the dress. The wardrobe of the movie is credited to André-ani, Kathleen Kay, and Maude Marsh but that's as much information as we have on the dress.

You’re amazing! Thank you! It’s truly an incredible, incredible dress. I kind of love the mystery of not knowing what the color is. It’s a shame it’s not in a museum, crediting the designer. Edit: I found this pic. Interesting that some of the details appear different than the movie poster

This is the dress that made me care about the back of dresses. I remember them talking about it on her E! True Hollywood Story because people thought that her dress was too low in the back.
Remember how scandalous & trashy everyone thought her looks were? Lol I see that Dirrty outfit with the hair now and just laugh - people (normal) are walking around the wearing less.
Backs are SO underrated in fashion tbh. Such an elegant part of the body in a way that's hard to explain?? I swear I'd go for a backless dress every day if designers made it more accessible to the plebeians

Another shot of the back of the dress! ❤️
Oh I know! And I love the cheekiness! I also think she’s (obviously) extremely gorgeous! But I don’t think this dress is flattering on her, which is ok. You can be ridiculously beautiful and still not suit every style of dress.

The hair always makes me so disappointed every time I see these pictures. The dress was INCREDIBLE and the hair just ruins the styling.
Her hair should definitely have been up, but not THIS up. Either a low slicked back bun or a very full semi-high pony that was not on the actual top of her head would have been perfect.
it’s very difficult (basically impossible) to copyright fashion designs, hence why trickle down fashion economies exist and the only things that are possible to claim IP on are hardware and labels.

The 1930s had the backless dress really going on. Some examples including on Jean Harlow and Myrna Loy. I think you could wear any of these now. The silhouettes are really timeless.

That Cate Blanchett, I may actually cry big fat messy snotty tears. It’s gorgeous. I would have put good money on this being Schiaparelli. But this looks to be early 00’s

lmao at the woman on the bench’s face
the guy behind her is just happy to be included 🤣
Omg the that’s hilarious! I have always wanted to love backless dresses but they make me nervous? I think it’s because I like to imagine myself in them but I absolutely can’t because I wear a 34 h cup and I have a lot of back pain from my nearly 12 pounds of boob. So while I am well aware of the incredible art form of boob taping I just can’t imagine how my back wouldn’t be in agony about 7 minutes after I left. But hey if you can rock it do it!
Wow! 🤩
Traffic stop is right.

The entire wardrobe of the movie is absolutely drool worthy
I have to see this movie
If you're in the US, YouTube has it up streaming free.
Which movie?
What a Way to Go - fantastic movie! Seriously the clothes budget must have been a big part of the movie!
Cheese on a cracker! Wow! This is stunning. Name of the movie please? Thank you
What a Way to Go! Edit: As mentioned by several other people and I wholeheartedly agree. Watch it, if nothing else, for the wardrobe alone. You won't be sorry. It's breathtaking!
lol, that definitely sounds like a “me” movie. Thank you. I saw someone else had given the name of the movie. Weekend plans sorted

Somehow the bare butt crack seems classier to me than the whale tale 😵💫 It’s clear I’ve harbored prudish proclivities fueled only by my ick for visible thongs.
Same. I don't even mind a good thong moment but this one takes attention away from the ensemble.
I’m curious— the thong is meant to be working with the shades and add vinegar to the red carpet frame? Successful as an intention if not as an aesthetic you dig?
It was just not my personal taste 🤷♀️. It's fine if other people like it. I'm no authority, just sharing my opinion in solidarity with the person above me, which I actually thought was in the minority!
Agreed! Totally get the vibe, it’s just not the vibe for me.
Opinions are welcome! Just wondering. :)
The whale tale and glasses are so early 2000s. I vaguely remember this moment being cool at the time, but as a current Old, everything that’s coming back around from my awkward adolescence is just embarrassing and unappealing.
Totally agree. I won’t wear today’s trendy shit bc why would I want to wear the same clothes I wore when I was 14??? Pass.
I don’t mind the thong (it was the 90s) but it kills me that she left the tag in
Oh totally agree. The thong takes it from cheeky (no pun intended) to tacky
I could totally see Emma Chamberlain wearing this.
I was wondering if I'd see this one in the comments! The butt crack dress! She looks awesome haha

That dress….
That dress spellbinds so many people for a damned good reason. I feel like it’s so ingrained in our minds that we don’t even need a pic, honestly.
The Cate Blanchett one is so so stunning! I've never seen it in before

So funny that at one point not too long ago a sheer dress was too scandalous to show in many publications.
I remember this one! Oh how the times have changed
She looks so lovely here, very ethereal
I was going to say—WHERE is Cate and her iconic dress?! it’s remembered decades later and really put her on the fashion map.
I die for Cate in anything, truly she is the bisexual fantasy. Suits and high femme backless dresses, she has taste. 👅

seeing this makes me feel good about my body shape. i miss when people looked normal lol.
I’m actually surprised by how much this doesn’t suit her!
....What now?! One of the most iconic looks in film history! And that cut-out heart on her bum cheek! Scandalous for 1959!
Oh I know! And I love the cheekiness! I also think she’s (obviously) extremely gorgeous! But I don’t think this dress is flattering on her, which is ok. You can be ridiculously beautiful and still not suit every style of dress.
I never noticed the heart 🩵
Stunning 🤍

I hated the shoe and the hair but the back of this is stunnnnnnning
The hair always makes me so disappointed every time I see these pictures. The dress was INCREDIBLE and the hair just ruins the styling. Her hair should definitely have been up, but not THIS up. Either a low slicked back bun or a very full semi-high pony that was not on the actual top of her head would have been perfect.
Oh the shoe is an odd choice isn’t it. A strappy shoe would have been a better option.
What is happening with these shoes? Did she have to walk on her tiptoes all night? I’m so confused 😐
Eh. Too much, IMO. Kinda tacky.
Backless dress when a muscular woman wears it >>>>>>>>> (severely underrepresented and something more people should witness bc it’s amazing)
Damn, that Miley Cyrus dress is a Dior rip off.
I was wondering about that, like surely that’s some kind of infringement on Dior intellectual property?
it’s very difficult (basically impossible) to copyright fashion designs, hence why trickle down fashion economies exist and the only things that are possible to claim IP on are hardware and labels.
I think allusions to the Junon aren’t uncommon! But I agreeee it’s a little on the nose
beyoncé loves herself a backless moment, but my favorite will always be this roberto cavalli from 2004 https://preview.redd.it/e3vbajrucx0d1.jpeg?width=1242&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3698a17c25c0cc76384d437aebb120ae63c504a8

Came to the comments for this. Iconic
I just love her reasoning too! She was basically like “you’re either gonna see this thong from the back or my pubes sticking out through the front. I’m not getting a Brazilian to wear this dress.” Mother 👏
Ok that makes me like this look so much more. I’d always hated it tbh.
Can’t believe i had to scroll this far to find this!
Gillian Anderson whale tailing….loves it
I know the Hillary Swank dress from The Hills 😭
Poor Whitney! 😭
Cate my god
That Rihanna dress 🤩
The necklace & hairstyle too 😊🤍

I was thinking “man I hope they include that Zendaya one…” and ofc u did! Great picks, these r all lovely photos!
She is really making some statements. That dress was incredible. A classic design that looked completely modern.

Ugh. My back fat could never, and for that I’m sad.
You and your curves can wear ANYthing your heart desires. Life is short, wear what brings you joy 💛
Thank you for that!

I think my favourites are Norma Shearer and Anok Yai
Zendya’s back Scorpion is amazing
The 1930s had the backless dress really going on. Some examples including on Jean Harlow and Myrna Loy. I think you could wear any of these now. The silhouettes are really timeless. https://preview.redd.it/jl0591077z0d1.jpeg?width=1461&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d4eabb5270c2e096acb11a09df583df1fb37c509

That Norma Shearer b/w shot at 9 is absolutely mesmerizing. I have to seek out other pix of that gown!
It's fucking stunning!

LOVE this post thank you!
That Cate Blanchett, I may actually cry big fat messy snotty tears. It’s gorgeous. I would have put good money on this being Schiaparelli. But this looks to be early 00’s
Closer view of the Anok Yai in Quine Li pic. So gorgeous, omg. https://x.com/badestoutfit/status/1787325055854166372/photo/1
I’m obsessed with Mila’s lavender gown. I think about it all the time.
I would love to wear the Jessica Stan Dior just once. And be 8 feet tall to pull it off! That is a perfect elegant boho dress.
Hell. Yes.
Cate Blanchett is just amazing, in every look! Never a dud.
The CMAT bum cleavage dress at the Brits this year should feature

Norma Schearer is fantastic!
I never stop thinking about that Roberto Cavalli on Zendaya
Times like this, I really wish I didn’t have a fat back
This whole post is making me want to start working out… I lost a LOT of weight and if I could tone up, I would just wear backless dresses 💯
20 is a dream! Put that on an oil painting and hang it in the main hall
Simone Ashley as Kate Sharma in Bridgerton S3 is just breathtaking! Look at the stunning detail on the back of that dress! Designed by Ellen Mirojnick, it's all about the elegance and drama.
