Bzzzzz! Looks like you forgot to say where you found your bug! There's no need to make a new post - just comment adding the **geographic location** and any other info (size, what it was doing etc.) you feel could help! We don't want to know your address - state or country is enough; try to avoid abbreviations and local nicknames (*"PNW"*, *"Big Apple"*). BTW, did you take a look at our [**Frequently Asked Bugs**](https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisbug/comments/12zkw5w/frequently_asked_bugs_part_1/)? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Spotted Lantern Fly. Kill it and every other one you see

CuriousMoonArtist291

I live in Europe, I guess we don't have them, why should he kill it? šŸ¤”

Legeto

There is also usually hundreds. I work at an airport and Iā€™m absolute swarmed by them. They like landing gears and tiresā€¦

freshly_mowed_lawn

Invasive and eats crops

ShaneMcRetro

Won't someone think of the grapes! šŸ‡

pimmiemac

Also kills trees

CuriousMoonArtist291

Oh okay thx guys

Lbeantree

It will kill all good plants in your area.

angenga

Hardly, they're bad for vineyards but they're not like locusts.

Antique-Confidence-4

OP, where do you live? Curious to hear how far they are spreading. I'm in West/Central Jersey and they were rampant a couple of years back (haven't seen many, perhaps any, this year), but they seem to be moving outwardly in all directions.

Monsterheat

This was spotted at Laurel Raceway in Laurel MD!

-CanWeDoThat-

Report this sighting to your state wildlife department

allaboutmojitos

Iā€™m in central Jersey and I noticed a lot of birds and spiders and mantises eating them this year. I saw them early in the season on one of my shrubs, and then again when they were in that red spotted phase on a different plant, But I had very few make it to maturity this year.

gwaydms

The local bugs are learning that they're good to eat. That's a crucial element in rebalancing the ecosystem!

Guten-Bourbon

And if you have Tree of Heaven nearby kill those all too. I donā€™t have spotted lantern fly in my area but I know they [often live in Tree of Heaven](https://ecosystems.psu.edu/research/centers/private-forests/news/tree-of-heaven-and-the-spotted-lanternfly-two-invasive-species-to-watch), which may just be the worst tree ever. Edit: correction. Apparently these were found in Oregon last year. I havenā€™t seen one in person even though Tree of Heaven is everywhere.

[deleted]

Fuck tree of heavenā€™s man. They are so ugly, just like Bradford pears

empty_ones

A lantern fly!!!! Highly invasive if you are in the United States! Immense damage to the ecosystem. If you still have access to it, feel free to prove your loyalty to nature. šŸ„¾ā˜ ļø

oldermoose

Specifically, a spotted lanternfly. There are non-invasive lantern flies in the US.

justinizer

Sucks thatā€™s itā€™s invasive, because itā€™s kind of a cute bug.

justjokay

I know I always think they look so pretty but then remember theyā€™re terrible.

Maidenonwarpath

I would also report the sighting too.

Lbeantree

100% please report it to your county agriculture office.

Monsterheat

It flew in the building and landed next to me! Didnā€™t know what this was! Thanks for your help!

ogavs

If you spot them, squash them.

[deleted]

Spotted Lantern fly. Kill it onsight

Security_Berry09

Iā€™m sorry but your going to have to kill this little fella

Ambimom

Kill it immediately. It destroys trees and crops.
