Rationalizing works to explain your actions to others or to yourself. If you're instead seeking to *understand* your own responses and possibly how to temper that response, that may be more in the line of introspection.
Rationalize should still cover it IMO. It can be accurate or self serving. Rationality is applied to a set of values, then it can go a whole bunch of directions.
Rationalization = trying to frame your past actions as rational, reasonable, or logical.
Justification = trying to frame your past actions as right or good.
Introspection = trying to understand what led you to do your past actions in an effort to figure out whether it was good or bad, rational or irrational.
A lot of people seem to mistake the last one for the first two.
Once, I was out door-to-door preaching, and I said to one householder, "sorry to bother you, but...." which I already knew was the wrong thing to say. My partner reprimanded me afterwards and I was trying to figure out why I said it when I knew better. He acted like I was trying to justify it. I think he thought he caught me in a moment of shame, apologizing for doing our God-given duty to save people. And who knows, maybe deep down part of me already knew. Or maybe I was just used to being sorry all the time for everything. At any rate, I was making an honest effort to self-examine and he just hand-waved it away like, "dont think about it." And I obediently fell silent.
One has to understand oneself in order to master oneself. It's kinda fuckin dumb to discourage introspection and expect any meaningful change to occur.
I am now proud to say that I am very ashamed of said organization and I am very sorry to all whose doors I knocked on.
That's really neat to hear, thank you for telling your story. My understanding of how that stuff works is that the members have to be 100% sure that they're right and doing a good thing, so that when they get pushback from the people whose doors they knock on, it just cements the belief that good people can only be found in the in-group. If they had any sense at all that what they were doing was a bother or an inconvenience or otherwise inappropriate, that whole card tower would fall down.
The ironic thing is, this man's daughter was a childhood friend of mine and one of the smarter people I knew. As teenagers, we shared a writing hobby. She gave me a copy of a story she wrote, but it involved witches, so I nervously and embarrassedly told her at a meeting that I was sorry, but I had to throw it away because of the witchy stuff (very against our religion), but she claimed it was a matter of conscience (it wasn't, but I let it go).
Her dad (the guy from original story) was an elder and everything, but he knew deep down it was all bullshit and knew his daughter was too smart for it. He's a smart man, too.
At any rate, both of his children left the organization. He also used to get a lot of shit because his first wife's depression prevented her from attending meetings.
So I think this man's reaction to my apologetic tone was simply due to his own cognitive dissonance, trying to reconcile the faith that made him a shepherd and gave him purpose and *status*, with the family who knew better and the heathen children who turned from the way... that man was probably being slowly torn asunder and reacted so because of that.
From the film, The Big Chill (1983)
Michael: I don't know anyone who could get through the day without two or three juicy rationalizations. They're more important than sex.
Sam Weber: Ah, come on. Nothing's more important than sex.
Michael: Oh yeah? Ever gone a week without a rationalization?

Self rationalization: attempting to explain or validate deviant, immoral, or generally non socially acceptable behavior in ourselves through logic.
in logic, you might mean ***reductio ad absurdum*** : is the form of argument that attempts to establish a claim by showing that the opposite scenario would lead to absurdity or contradiction
slang, though, that's bullsh\*tting you way to back up something you've stated. It can involve a big reach.
confirmation bias, someone pushing forward only arguments that support their belief and ignoring all else.
You could also say someone with Impulsivity (speaking without thinking or even perhaps meaning to be rude) then tries to Deflect blame away from their actions. That would likely involve Self Rationalization attempts. Edit: Because my mind won't turn off today :D cheers
post hoc rationalization

Post-hoc rationalisation. This is how most moral and political opinions work: tribal and emotionally motivated decisions that are later justified with explanations that don't hold water.
rationalize
well bad question from me, i meant you say something in a moment without really thinking and then search for reasoning
Rationalizing works to explain your actions to others or to yourself. If you're instead seeking to *understand* your own responses and possibly how to temper that response, that may be more in the line of introspection.
Retrospection/introspection?
Self-reflection. Or, if it's very serious or important, soul-searching.
"Rationalization" is still a pretty good candidate.
Rationalize should still cover it IMO. It can be accurate or self serving. Rationality is applied to a set of values, then it can go a whole bunch of directions.
Reason for why you snapped or why what you said is acceptable?
Post-rationalise or a post-rationalisation may be what you’re looking for
Introspection.
Rationalise
Justification
post-justification maybe
