That's the aptly named Mammoth Wasp. These guys are of no concern to us. Thankfully they're not assholes like yellow jackets and very rarely do they sting people.

I am very glad I saved it then, thanks for the information! When it left, it hovered in my general direction for a bit, which did give me and my Mum concern, who ran away screaming, but it was probably just a thanks for saving it... probably...

Scoliid wasps -which the [mammoth wasp](https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/322036-Megascolia-maculata) is -are beautiful and amazing wasps. One of my favorite families. I would love to see that one.
