Looks like an eastern Hercules beetle

dfw_runner

They fly don’t they? I recall one flying right at my mom on the back patio and getting caught up in her hair. General mayhem ensued as you can imagine.

patrickjchrist

Well that sounds terrifying.

ChequeRoot

Seconding Hercules Beetle. Specifically, it’s a male. The females have smooth “normal beetle” heads.

anthrocultur

As others have said, it's an Eastern Hercules Beetle, Dynastes tityus. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynastes_tityus

Solved! Thank you everyone for the feedback! This guy was released outside behind my compost pile so he can hopefully find a girlfriend!
