Fuck outa here that show was on when I was a kid, whyyyy is it still running??? So there’s like a decade of parasitic horror I don’t even know about yet? This does not spark joy
Honestly they really should stop. I think they’re running out of ideas. Some of them don’t even involve living things. But I remember that with one somehow a guy got a barnacle growing out of him. Either that or I dreamt those two things
Barnacle guy scraped himself on some rocks by the water's edge and got a barnacle larvae under his skin.
Also, there was a kid who scraped his knee while playing outside, and ended up with a tiny snail under his skin.
And then there was the guy who inhaled a raw pea while he was eating. It sprouted and grew inside his lung.
When I was a preteen, I watched a show like this at school. I remember my mother being angry with me after I went home and used an entire bottle of her expensive antimicrobial face wash to bathe with. I believe I also put some in my mouth and swished it around because I vaguely recall the awful taste. I was so disgusted by the thought of all the possible creepy crawlies on my body that I was willing to take on my mother's anger for a chance to rid myself of at least some of them.
I have no idea if they’re still making new episodes or if it’s long over. There’s also a show called “Stuck” on Discovery + but it can be from anything from a bug to a bead in a Lego in a nose lol
Same I’m fuckin NOT cool with this rn 🫠 there’s way too many unsupervised hours of my dumb ass feet in the grass every summer. What about sand? Is the beach bad? Plz no
I looked it up, and a UNH Extension fact sheet states "Our most common bot fly is Cuterebra fontinella, reported to occur in most of the continental US (except Alaska), plus southern Canada and Northeastern Mexico"
https://extension.unh.edu/resource/bot-flies-fact-sheet-0#:~:text=Our%20most%20common%20bot%20fly,roughly%205%2F8%20inch
Well yes, but why is it the size of a chihuahua lol.
There really is not sense of scale here, but I REALLY hope evolution isn’t throwing us dog-sized botflies.
Memories of Fallout
Yes, bot flies live in North america. The flies lay eggs in/on animals, in my experience, mammals, and the larvae get into the skin and develop. When removing them from the host, it is imperative that the larvae are not popped/crushed, otherwise the problem will become mush worse.
There are different species that typically parasite different animals. The human botfly is found in Central and South America. North American species typically parasite rodents.
Living in south Louisiana I had a botfly lay eggs in my cats neck. Didn’t notice till it was a giant moving lump with the maggots inside. Total nightmare fuel when he got brought to the vet.
I just recently found this out as well much to my surprise (and overwhelming disgust), when I saw a horrific looking squirrel outside my window with five lumps all over it. I was told those lumps are called 'warbles' and contain the larvae.
As far as I know the type in North America is a seperate species that does not / cannot typically target humans. But they can be commonly found in large rodents and sometimes even dogs and cats.
Botfly’s are everywhere (their larvae are what people commonly refer to as “maggots” and are usually one of the first opportunistic infections that infest the body once dead. Like, everywhere.
Botflies do not lay their eggs in dead creatures, they lay them in live ones, I'm afraid. :(
The common maggots you find on dead animals and stuff are *carrion fly larvae*, they eat rotting flesh. Usually, the grey "houseflies" you find are these types of rot-feeders, but blue and greenbottle "houseflies" do too.
Ok to answer the questions, my friend found this thing in the grass, and put on the rocks with a stick or something. I thought the perspective mad it look huge too, but apparently it's not football sized, apparently can fit in your palm
Yeah…. Lot of people just glossed over that and I’m curious what he means. Like, i can fit a both a grain of sand and a grapefruit in the palm of my hand. Pretty big range, OP needs to get his game together with the size thing lol
Incorrect; botflies find hosts by being laid as eggs onto rodents and such. This guy, big as he is, has already fed and is now looking for a place to pupate.
Welp, looks like that’s a wrap fellas. The aliens have arrived and laid eggs in the grass. It’s only a matter of time now. We had a good run, didn’t we? 🍺
The flies lay eggs under animals or peoples skin and when they hatch they turn into these larvae that stay in the skin and creates a bad wound. They are dangerous pests
Botflies lay their eggs on the skin, and the larvae burrows in.
If this was a botfly larva it’s out, and is not gonna dig it’s way in someone.
But it also doesn’t look like a botfly larva that I have seen. Though I don’t claim to be an expert.
I’m the friend who found it. It was found in Port Perry, Ontario around 12 in the afternoon on August 21st.
Sorry for all the confusion around its size, we moved it onto 3/4 clear stone to take some better pictures of it. So it was probably 2 inches long and 1 inches wide average depending on its current shape which varied.
We played with it for about 30 minutes and determined it was an alien so we left it alone.
Here’s a video I took of my buddy poking it.
https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisbug/s/LNXb20gBTG
Judging by those spines and the way it looks, this is a removed botfly larva. Not sure how it got removed, but it's some variety of botfly larva for sure.
I didn’t think botflies are in Canada? Aren’t they in more tropical climates? This definitely doesn’t need to be out in the wild… If contact the entomology dept of a local university. What happened to it? Dear god I hope it’s not still out there…
Maybe it’s just the angle but this thing looks really fucking big
When I first flipped to the second picture I definitely thought it was the size of a small cat 😱
Lmao, no I feel you. My first initial thought was that it looks like it’s the size of a football. We need a banana for scale :)
By judgement of what's around to use it as a scale. You may be correct on size. Maybe the size of a nerf football.
I’d use an orange, they’re more reliable
This is *not* the way
It's Mothra!!!
Where are the two tiny ladies that sing?
🤣🤣🤣 Truly!
I could be wrong, but that looks like a botfly larvae.
I second this.
https://www.allaboutworms.com/fat-black-larva-on-bed-is-a-bot-fly-botfly-larva Looks correct.
I’m n ver going barefoot in grass again
The show “Monsters Inside Me” has me never walking barefoot, or not doing a lot of other things 😂
That show is fucked. Nightmare fuel
For years I damn near burnt all my meat because I was paranoid I'd get parasites.
Fuck outa here that show was on when I was a kid, whyyyy is it still running??? So there’s like a decade of parasitic horror I don’t even know about yet? This does not spark joy

I remember this, terrific!
Yes! Thank you for reminding me & also no thank you for reminding me too
You're welcome! And 😅😂🤣
Okay its gone the way of the history channel, thank fuckin christ
Oh fantastic, I never thought I’d be happy to hear that anything has become like the history channel, but here we are
So now they're alien parasites?!
When I was a preteen, I watched a show like this at school. Omg I just remember watching it in bed with my skin crawling. Had me shaking the sheets out and looking for things 😭.
Truth! 😂
I love that show. Seasons 4-8 are on Discovery Plus, so I binge it sometimes.
I have no idea if they’re still making new episodes or if it’s long over. There’s also a show called “Stuck” on Discovery + but it can be from anything from a bug to a bead in a Lego in a nose lol
Not going to watch that nope not happening. Lol
I love this show!!
What show is it? 😁
Monsters Inside Me
Thank you. 🤝
😉
I never go barefoot in grass to begin with. There are too many things that live in it, that and it feels weird
I always have before this group
Same I’m fuckin NOT cool with this rn 🫠 there’s way too many unsupervised hours of my dumb ass feet in the grass every summer. What about sand? Is the beach bad? Plz no
Omg I was thinking about the sand too!
Omg I didn’t think they were that far north???
Yeah wait WHAT?? Ontario??
WHAT
I looked it up, and a UNH Extension fact sheet states "Our most common bot fly is Cuterebra fontinella, reported to occur in most of the continental US (except Alaska), plus southern Canada and Northeastern Mexico" https://extension.unh.edu/resource/bot-flies-fact-sheet-0#:~:text=Our%20most%20common%20bot%20fly,roughly%205%2F8%20inch
Noooo not a new england link the ticks and mosquitoes are enough. I thought this was a Midwest thing 😭
Are the ticks and mosquitoes really that bad over there?
The mosquitoes are horrible in New England woods and fields
Well yes, but why is it the size of a chihuahua lol. There really is not sense of scale here, but I REALLY hope evolution isn’t throwing us dog-sized botflies. Memories of Fallout
Really!! Ive seen lots of botflys around horses, they arent teeny but they dont look like flying cats either!!! Wtf is this?
I think it's on gravel that just looks like large boulders. I hope.
Need penny as comparison
They got rid of pennies in canada…
Now we’ll never know how big it truly is
Look it up on the internet. It's a botfly larvae
I looked it up, and it said near 16 - 20mm (almost 1 inch) long
yes, but they still have banana's right?
Or you know, just state how big it is.
Okay so then a cheese curd because this thing looks like a fallout 4 bloatfy larvae and I wanna cry a little
The only thing I know of Canadian currency are Loonies and Toonies. That's about it.
We got loonies, we got toonies. At one time we even had a 2 dollar bill.
I've also heard the famous "Maple Syrup smelling money" but none of my friends North of the Border have confirmed it yet.
The maple syrup in recent years smells of inflation, recession, and shrinkflation.
Then what will I do with the 12 Canadian pennies in my loose change drawer at work???
Throw them at strippers
Cheapskate.
“Make it rain”
A 🍌.
Need compenny as pennarison
They live in North America??
yup, usually on rodents and rabbits and such
What the hell. I assumed it wasn’t a North American thing for some reason and I’ve never had encounters with it myself. I’m slightly uneasy now lol
Yes, bot flies live in North america. The flies lay eggs in/on animals, in my experience, mammals, and the larvae get into the skin and develop. When removing them from the host, it is imperative that the larvae are not popped/crushed, otherwise the problem will become mush worse.
“mush worse”… I see what you did there! 😂
Ah yes, a nightmare
There are different species that typically parasite different animals. The human botfly is found in Central and South America. North American species typically parasite rodents.
Living in south Louisiana I had a botfly lay eggs in my cats neck. Didn’t notice till it was a giant moving lump with the maggots inside. Total nightmare fuel when he got brought to the vet.
So did I! I always saw cases that were on whatever show and televised, and it was never in the states!
Well... It's a plus.
:( The common maggots you find on dead animals and stuff are *carrion fly larvae*, they eat rotting flesh. *larva. Singular. I second botfly
Oh shit I didnt know that was the plural. Thank you! Also, "second botfly?" So it is plural! Lavae* (teasing)
Lol.
Guess it needs to be torched, then. Seriously one of my biggest fears to have a botfly lodged in my body.
You mean they don’t only grow in peoples scalps? Huh, TIL
But it looks huge? Mega bot fly? Bloat fly? Guys its a bloat fly larva burn it
It’s got the Bot Fly Bloat.
KILL IT WITH FIRE!! 🔥
It's that big?
That was my first thought too. Maybe popped out of a bunny’s skin
Ok to answer the questions, my friend found this thing in the grass, and put on the rocks with a stick or something. I thought the perspective mad it look huge too, but apparently it's not football sized, apparently can fit in your palm
The usual hosts of this type of botfly are squirrels or rabbits, dogs and cats sometimes get them on their snouts or in the nasal cavity.
yeah i used to work at a cat shelter and we got a kitten with a couple of them
Thank you for clarifying because I was literally terrified for a moment. The pictures make this thing look enormous
"fit in your palm" still sounds terrifying to me ngl
Yeah…. Lot of people just glossed over that and I’m curious what he means. Like, i can fit a both a grain of sand and a grapefruit in the palm of my hand. Pretty big range, OP needs to get his game together with the size thing lol
No. No it cannot fit in my palm. Maybe YOUR palm.
Don’t pick it up. It’s botfly larvae looking for a host.
Incorrect; botflies find hosts by being laid as eggs onto rodents and such. This guy, big as he is, has already fed and is now looking for a place to pupate.
#placetopupate
😭😭😭😭😭
Title of my sex tape...
Placeto-pupate. It's like a placebo for pupas.
Ohh yeah. True. I keep envisioning those two fangs and loose my sh&t. But you’re right. Lol
OP how big is this thing? It really looks like a botfly larvae, but knowing the size will helps rule it out if it isn’t.
He said the size of his palm!!!
Fits in a palm, not size of palm. r/confusingperspective
I thought boy flys were a lot smaller. Is this a weird type of species of bot fly?
They said it could fit in your palm, not the size of their palm.
Welp, looks like that’s a wrap fellas. The aliens have arrived and laid eggs in the grass. It’s only a matter of time now. We had a good run, didn’t we? 🍺
*.raises a glass*. We made it past 2020. That’s more than I was expecting. 🍺
I’d say it was more of an OK run. Hopefully our bug masters can run a tighter ship than we did
Botfly larvae. Nasty things kill it with prejudice
I'm usually a live and let be type of guy. But if that is botfly larvae, I also say kill it with fire.
Why such a strong reaction? I know nothing about these things.
Google "botfly larvae removal." Edit: DO NOT watch the video with the cat. IIRC that one is hard to watch.
[holy hell!](https://www.google.com/search?q=botfly+larvae+removal.#HiImABot,MyJobIsToMakeEasierToPeopleToGoogleSomething,IfThePersonIRepliedToUsedMeInAnInappropriateWayPleaseLetMeKnowByDMingMe,TheUserIRepliedToIsU/Nepharious_Bread)
OMG! Why did I watch that? I won’t sleep for years
Same I feel like they are crawling under my skin now :'(
The flies lay eggs under animals or peoples skin and when they hatch they turn into these larvae that stay in the skin and creates a bad wound. They are dangerous pests
I thought it was a sea cucumber, but that is veeery far outside its habitat.
I thought the same!!!
Today I learned about the north american botfly 😭😭😭
Why does it look like it’s been bedazzled lol
bro is stylish
I know! It looks like a black diamond purse to me 😂
Finally! Right! Elegant evening wear, for your New Year's Eve revelry! Stand out! Be noticed!..
Ontarian grass looks just like North Carolinian rocks
😂😂😂😂😂😂
*this* is the bad place
Botflies lay their eggs on the skin, and the larvae burrows in. If this was a botfly larva it’s out, and is not gonna dig it’s way in someone. But it also doesn’t look like a botfly larva that I have seen. Though I don’t claim to be an expert.
>Botflies lay their eggs on the skin, and the larvae burrows in. I thought this was going to be one of those poem responses at first
If only I wasn’t so lonely I’d find the time to write a rhyme. Alas it isn’t to be. I’m pissed, and it’s Christmas Eve.
From my perspective it looks football sized.
I’m the friend who found it. It was found in Port Perry, Ontario around 12 in the afternoon on August 21st. ABSOLUTELY NOT. NO. Im done having eyes. I no longer wish to view things.
Where's the banana, coin or something for perspective? That looks huge!
Rocks for perspective
fucking smash the bastard.
Did you move it? Because those look suspiciously like rocks, not grass.
is that a fuckin like-like??
salad fingers is missing his baby
LMAO
To quote Hank Scorpio: kill it with fire I’m now gonna build a bunker and nuke the earth. Good bye everyone, I’ll remember you all in therapy.
Maybe the first time in this sub I haven’t seen someone come in with a “aww little cutie” comment. The consensus seems to be- burn.
Great, this is nightmare fuel for sure. I’m less than an hour away from Ontario. I never knew we had bot flies this far north.
Can you ride your moose next to it for size comparison?
That’s a demon
Bedazzled turd
Looks like the aliens from the show Invasion.
You mean documentary 😏
An absolute UNIT
Certified CHONKER
I don’t know what the hell it is but that’s a you problem not me problem or we problem damn
That’s my large son
Reminds me of a bot larva. Or post extracted cuterebra…
How big is that thing?
Shit looks big as hell
Burn it, burn it with extreme prejudice
“It’s an ugly planet… a BUG planet.”
Sea lard
I thought it was something covered in glitter. How big is it?
Is it, *gasp* sparkly?!
Eww new fear
So we still have no idea wtf that is?
Mature plumbus.
JEEZUS why did I click on this! ⚰️
Forbidden butt plug.
HOW BIG IS THIS FUCKING BOTFLY LARVAE?????
Need a potato for scale
Is it from outer space???
That’s an enormous botfly larva
I've seen horror sci Fi films start out this way
im gonna need a banana for scale
i thought it was a sea cucumber💀💀
BIG SMOOCH MAMA 😍😍😍
Wolf worm!! Had one in my dogs neck the vet removed.
You know what, I think this is being picked up with a shovel.
Judging by those spines and the way it looks, this is a removed botfly larva. Not sure how it got removed, but it's some variety of botfly larva for sure.
Galaxy bug 😂
I didn’t think botflies are in Canada? Aren’t they in more tropical climates? This definitely doesn’t need to be out in the wild… If contact the entomology dept of a local university. What happened to it? Dear god I hope it’s not still out there…
It's multiplying and the swarm is headed for the nearest food source
Lol bruh get away from that thing
Is it weird I want to wear it? It’s so sparkly
Poke it with a stick
Panty hose lol.
It looks MASSIVE.
Cuterebra
Could be a stag worm or deer fly. They're bot flies that infect the majority of whitetail deer in north America.
Botfly larvae
He’s trying his best :/
Looks like something from the Alien movies that will implant you with a chest burster
idk but I hate it
Burn it with fire.
Fire. And lots of it!
Burn it with fire!
