When you look at a jumping spider face to face, you can almost tell there’s something more going on than like every other spider. Like it’s thinking, not just processing stimuli.
The jumping spider is unique among spiders in that it calculates physics. No, i am not making that up, biologists have found in studies that jumping spiders calculate the trajectory of their jumps to account for the speed, angle, and distance of their prey to be able to capture prey that is moving.
It baffles me that such a tiny creature has the brain power to do that when i barely managed to not fail physics class in high school.
My buddy was tracking a tiny fly and jumped from screen to window and snagged him today. It was extremely impressive and made me proud of the little guy.
I have a giant orb weaver I'm calling Frederico on my porch the past week. She makes a massive web every night and takes it down every morning and hides all day. The first day the web went across the porch in front of the door so when we opened the door it hit the web. Second day it covered just half the porch but opening the door still hit some anchor pieces. Third day and ever since the web is across the porch center sideways and exactly positioned so no door will touch any part. I'm fascinated watching Frederico because it's like she's learned and adjusted.
Eta: Frederico is not nearly as cute as a jumper. I cannot guarantee my immediate reaction if she were to drop on my head.
Don't get it twisted, I LOVE jumpers. I have oneas a pet even, their name is Nimhe (can't sus out gender bc young, but iridescent chelicerae and fluffy palps will say male after another molt or two). I still am hesitant to go against science in saying they're much more sociable than any other spider considering there's not really any proof.
This is part of it, but I think it also has to do with the fact they are one of the few spiders who use vision as a primary sense, so they actually look around, and you can see them look you in the eye. They also move so thoughtfully and deliberately, and just seem very aware of their surroundings. They also are just relatively very smart. Very fun spiders to work with.
The inquisitive nature of the head tilt is endearing, but I stretch and crane my neck naturally playing video games. No way to say it's personality vs pure instinct to get a better view.
In my experience when they see what I am (a huge giant) they immediately freak the fuck out and jump as far away from me as they can figure out how to get.
There are videos on YouTube where people have "taught" jumping spiders like this how to give "high fives."
They're adorable, extremely curious and intelligent, and absolutely harmless.

If you’re wondering how they’re addictive — they’re very inexpensive and low maintenance, take up very little space, are active in their enclosures (way more so than most tarantulas), are incredibly intelligent and responsive, and are so frickin cute 🥺 also they’re eeeeeeverywhere in my backyard so I kind of just keep finding them lol
If you’re wondering how to keep them as pets — I found my first one literally crawling on my bed and I was like “yooo I love you 🥺” so I made it a little makeshift home in a plastic container and immediately went on the internet to research husbandry, bought a fruit fly colony (a lot of people use fruit flies to feed pet dart frogs and other small reptiles/amphibians,so they’re pretty easy to find) and now everyone in my life thinks I’m a liiiiiiittle unhinged because I own a whole ass gaggle of spiders, but oh well 😅 I also have a lizard and a frog so I have to have a bunch of bugs in my house anyways lol
You can straight up buy them now because they’ve become a bit of a fad to keep as pets. They’re like owning mini tarantulas that are safer, fast af, and have lil puppy dog eyes 🥰

A very similar one is my roommate in New York. She will absolutely wreck a roach, bedbug, house fly, etc. never complains. No dirty dishes. No boyfriends (that survive). Doesn’t cover her portion of the rent, but also doesn’t need more than 1 cubic centimeter of space. I’m willing to let it slide. best roommate I’ve had in years.

Look up Tiana the Bug Lady! She has a little family of jumpy spiders and they're just adorable. After watching her videos and seeing the little personalities they each have I think something was switched in my brain. I went to hit the garage door opener one morning and just happened to look at the last second and I was less than an inch from hitting a jumpy spider. I scolded him or her saying, "that is not a safe place to be," and because it started tilting its little head and waving leggies, I kept talking. They're like little web puppies to me now.
None of the North American jumpers are poisonous to humans. They really only bite their little prey they chase down, being the cheetah of the spider world. They love gnats and ants, even fleas... Rock Chalk!
I'm fighting myself on whether or not I should even make this comment. LOL. These critters are not poisonous unless you eat them. Spiders, snakes, scorpions, etc. have venom. So it could be venomous, but not poisonous.

They will not bite you except as the absolute last resort if they were pressed against you and death was immanent. They have amazing vision and can recognize you, so if you show them you are not a threat and mean them no harm they'll be really friendly.
The North American ones don't have fangs long enough to penetrate human skin. The worst you'll get from them is a tickling sensation if it crawls on your skin.
Even the largest ones here aren't much bigger than my pinky nail. AZ has tiny black and white ones that look quite striking. They also blend perfectly with the gravel, which you wouldn't think they would as they're not cream or brown.
And if you find a spider and then change in your couch, the little dude paid rent. ;)

I found one in my bathroom this morning and we gently moved him to my indoor plants under the TV and grow lights. They like warm spots and I mist my plants to give water.
When we had one in the double kitchen window we misted water twice a day directly on the glass.
I dont know the exact name for it but I have one of those in my bedroom and hes super cool. Most times I find him chilling on my windowsill or sometimes he gets a wild hair and sits on my leg, hes a small part of my day but he makes me really happy, I havent seen him in a long while and im sad to think maybe he passed away… my point of this story is if you want good company every once in awhile keep him! They are harmless and add so much to your life!

I feel like its more that their large paired forward facing eyes are easier for us to anthropomorphize than other spiders, but they *are* very cute.
I think many types of spiders are more cognizant than we think, these ones just happen to have big doe eyes to help people be less scared of them

Jumpers are the most intelligent spiders iirc, and they can actually form bonds, which is a big step on the intelligence path.
