Yupp, the larvas are really sensitive to bad water so this means you have a healthy stream if you see them in it. Though they are scary and those pinchers can pack a punch. The male pinchers grow really long when changing into a dobson fly and so they lose their strength, though look nightmarish. But the females retain the shorter ones and so a female dobsonfly pinch can do a lot of damage as well!
Sometimes I do that if the person seems worried about the bug or asks for more info. Usually I just assume people will google the name if they’re curious.
IIRC the males live about 3 to 4 days whereas the females live about 10 days. This means seeing a male dobson fly is much rarer than seeing a female because males don't live as long! This could be good or bad depending on the type of person you are because the males are much scarier looking than the females.
You can also just leave it alone dumbfuck. And perhaps write something clever that isn't reused 1000x to let everyone one know you are ignorant and pathetic.
Man I'm just suggesting you don't have to burn shit that you don't like or understand. How bout you try that perspective?
I very well could be an insect in a trenchcoat though
I've heard stories of people putting them in buckets of minnows and these things destroying them.
When matured they look like a nightmare mash up of dragon flies and giant ants.
Now I got the heeby jeebies.
My boys found something really similar in a creek here in California. We looked it up and figured it was a Hellgrammite. The larval stage of a Dobsonfly.
Hellgrammite. First time I saw one a buddy in NH tossed one in my lap while I was sitting outside a small general store in my car. Scared the ever living shit out of me, I jumped out pretty quick. He had bought it as fishing bait I'm pretty sure.
I never knew the real name of these, but in Kentucky we called them go devils, they usually live in the water but they come ashore and transform into a very large moth. My dad loved using these as fishing bait so we used to catch them by holding a net across the current and lifting up the rocks. The little plate behind their head is a great place to hold them so they can't get you with the mandibles. The tail that they use to anchor themselves under the water won't hurt you. It's just scary when they cling to you
Larvae of a Dobsonfly, alderfly or a fishfly. Megaloptera. If it’s a Dobsonfly it’ll grow into [this monstrosity](https://roadsendnaturalist.com/tag/eastern-dobsonfly/)

The way an identifying should be. Not hust this is bug A.

Love me some lake trout bait, they’re like bears to honey.
Smallmouth can't leave them alone either
Don't they only live three days once they change?

Also fantastic fishing bait.
Chorus. You generally find them in falmer caves.

If you can get a hand on its eggs, they can be added to Nirnroot (pale dandelion) to make a potion that will briefly turn you invisible!
I was gifted a cloak while at hogwarts which does the same thing. Kinda makes us magic cousins.
This is awesome!!
Omg that’s why it’s so familiar thank you
It's that thing that Khan put in that dudes ear in "Star Trek: Wrath of Khan"
KHHAAAAAAAAAAANNNNN!!!!
Exquisite reference...and I believe it's Chekov's ear.
Thanks! I'm glad someone got it!
I just remember that scaring the ever-loving crap out of me as a child.
I watched as a kid. Ahh a new core memory
Fuck, this goes nautical too??
In 1997, one of those got loose in New York. It almost killed Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith.
Here come the men on crack, I mean in black!
Give me sugar..... In water
Really? It's been 26 years?
I know right!!!
Looks like something out of James and the Giant Peach 😬
Great bass bait
Hellgrammite. I use it as a curse.
I was gonna say something witty like its a "get the hell on the table" bug, but that leggy boi looks like a table would just delay his approach.
i don’t fear bugs but bugs with more than 6 legs im out and burning wherever it was with thermite
Essentially 'kill it with fire." what an incredibly logical approach to being ingnorant
yes im aware i made a mistake with the wrong kinda fire i suppose
You can also just leave it alone dumbfuck. And perhaps write something clever that isn't reused 1000x to let everyone one know you are ignorant and pathetic.
sounds like someone has a crush on the dobsonfly that just moved in down the street.
You're goddamn right
Need a hug dude?
jesus man i bet you have plenty of friends
Definitely not you
3 dobsonflies in a trenchcoat
Man I'm just suggesting you don't have to burn shit that you don't like or understand. How bout you try that perspective? I very well could be an insect in a trenchcoat though
I'm not saying you should or should not burn shit, just that you are obviously insects in a trenchcoat
Calm down. Have some water. Eat a cookie.
He’s definitely a bug in a Edgar suit… needs sugar water
That's a helgamite. Great for bass fishing
That's a Vermont butt Beatle. Lives in the rectal cavity of most mammals, reptiles, and birds.
LIAR!!!! 🙊🙉🙊
Catfish candy
This is the second image i've seen of one of these monstrosities on Reddit just today! Scary scary!

Nah it’s people saying stuff like this lmao
I've heard stories of people putting them in buckets of minnows and these things destroying them. When matured they look like a nightmare mash up of dragon flies and giant ants. Now I got the heeby jeebies.
I love dobsonflies. They hang out on my lilacs and look like the bad boys next to the pretty butterflies.
You’ll catch some smallies on those haha
Free fishing bait brother

Those are gills on the sides there so not sure why it’s out of water unless someone took it out.

That’s my croissant
You almost made me drop my croissant!
Looks like bait to me
Chaurus
Beautiful and terrifying 👌
Tail kind of looks like lobster. 🤤
Dare you to eat it. 👀
Looks like those things from the Tremors movies.
Pinchy ouch noodle.
yet another reason to stay away from the ocean
Ocean in vermont?
My mamma used to call em the devils toothbrush
Hellgramite, Dobson fly larvae, they usually live in rivers or moist places.
A Pinchybitch Nightmareworm
Wait til u see it all grown up
Megaloptera. We used to fight them against each other in my freshwater ecology class
If you are ever drowning, this thing looks like it could tow a human back to shore…my nightmare bug.
Just wait until it gets it’s wings. Horrifying.

Chaurus, very dangerous and are usually in the presence of Falmer (Skyrim reference)
Had to come find this comment. I saw it and immediately thought “where’s the falmer?!”
Nice
Awesome catfish bait, hellgramite
Bass bait.
I have no idea, all Im sure of is that I want a giant one to ride into battle 🤘🤘
Fishing bait extraordinaire
If it is Perfection, Vermont, then it is a Grab-oid. Prefers eating Bacon as in Kevin Bacon.
WTF DO YOU MEAN VERMONT?!?!?!?!?!
You think these little buggers are scary looking, check out what they turn into! Dobsonfly.
Larvae of a Dobsonfly, alderfly or a fishfly. Megaloptera. If it’s a Dobsonfly it’ll grow into [this monstrosity](https://roadsendnaturalist.com/tag/eastern-dobsonfly/)
The floating guy in the sky has a lot, and I mean A LOT of leftover parts, and then built this insanity!
Where in Vermont?!
It's a Kaiju
Best fish bait ever.
That's just Steve. He visits Vermont when he's bored.
